Using Literature in Health Care: Reflections on “The Yellow Wallpaper”

OBJECTIVE: To discuss how literature can be used to educate healthcare practitioners and students about the patient's physical and emotional response to treatment. DATA SOURCES: A MEDLINE search (January 1975-November 1997) of English-language literature pertinent to using literature in health care was performed. Additional literature was obtained from a search of the New York University Web site on medicine and humanities, biographies of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and a search of the MLA and INFOTRAC database. SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION: All articles and literature were considered for possible inclusion in this article. Pertinent information, as judged by the author, was selected for discussion. SUMMARY: Literature can pose a wealth of information to the healthcare professional. The short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” is analyzed in this article as one example of how literature portrays the patient's emotional response to disease. This short story describes a 19th-century woman's “descent into madness” and the ineffective treatment attempted by her well-meaning physician husband. The author, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, loosely based the story on her own experience with the respected physician, S Weir Mitchell and his famous rest cure. Some biographical information about Mitchell and Perkins is included, as well as a commentary on the treatment of depression in the 19th century. CONCLUSIONS: Short stories such as “The Yellow Wallpaper,” novels, and other short stories can help to remind the healthcare professional of the subjective nature of even our most proven therapies. As we strive to teach and deliver pharmaceutical care, we can use literature to help us understand the emotional impact of our drug therapies.

This paper deploys the methodology of textual analysis to re-read and undertake an exegesis of the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “Bliss” penned by modernist writer Katherine Mansfield. The exploration of the symbols and imagery that abound in the texts reveal and underscore the thematic framework of the short stories. While the colour, animal and food imagery add richness to the story of Bertha Mason in “Bliss”, the multifarious symbols are symptomatic of the protagonist’s mental make-up and the descent into madness of her creative propensity in “The Yellow Wallpaper”.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the problems around the imprisonment of the female protagonist in Chalotte Perkins Gilman’s short story entiled The Yellow Wallpaper. The focus of the analysis is on the actors and factors causing imprisonment, types dan impacts of imprisonment, efforts to overcome the imprisonment, and the end of the imprisonment experienced by the female protagonist. To analyse this problems, feminist literary criticism is used supported by the stereotypes of the nineteenth century women, the medical opinion at that time and the feminist perspective concerning the mental disorder experienced by women, and the concept of oppression in the imprisonment as well. The result shows that a woman who experiences the physical and psychological imprisonment in the patriarchal household area tends to have mental disorder as an alternative to gain freedom. The conclusion that can be drawn is that in the patriarchal environment women’s movement area and psychological, emotional, intellectual actualization  tend to be limited in which the women who fight against those linitations will get the stigma of suffering from mental illness.

ABSTRAK Tulisan ini mengkaji cerpen “The Yellow Wallpaper” karya Charlotte Perkins Gilman dengan menggunakan pendekatan feminis psikoanalisis Karen Horney. Pendekatan teori ini digunakan untuk menganalisis bahwa bentuk perlawanan perempuan yang tecermin dalam cerpen ini antara lain perlawanan mendekati orang lain, perlawanan melawan orang lain, dan perlawanan menjauhi orang lain. Bentuk perlawanan mendekati orang lain adalah dengan aktivitas memunculkan teman khayalan yang dianggap nyata; Perlawanan melawan orang lain ditunjukkan dengan kembalinya aktivitas menulis dan aktivas yang menunjukkan gangguan jiwa; Perlawanan menjauhi orang lain adalah dengan aktivitas mengunci pintu kamar dan tidak ingin bertemu dengan orang lain. Bentuk perlawanan yang paling kuat adalah ketika tokoh perempuan dianggap mengidap gangguan jiwa. Perlawanan-perlawanan perempuan tersebut disebabkan oleh dominasi atau belenggu patriarki dalam masyarakat. Belenggu-belenggu patriarki yang tecermin dalam cerpen ini antara lain subordinasi peran perempuan, alienasi/pengasingan perempuan dari masyarakat, dan perempuan dianggap sebagai liyan.Kata kunci: feminis psikoanalisis, perlawanan, gangguan jiwa ABSTRACTThis paper examines the short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman using the feminist approach of Karen Horney's psychoanalysis. This theoretical approach is used to analyze that the forms of women's resistance reflected in this short story include resistance to approaching others, resistance against other people, and resistance to staying away from others. The form of resistance to approaching others is through the activity of bringing up imaginary friends who are considered real; Resistance against others is shown by the return to writing and activities that indicate mental disorders; The resistance to staying away from others is by locking the bedroom door and not wanting to meet other people. The strongest form of resistance is when the female character is considered to have mental disorders. The women's resistance was caused by the dominance or the shackles of patriarchy in society. The patriarchal shackles that are reflected in this short story include the subordination of the role of women, alienation / alienation of women from society, and women being considered as others.  Jonas Biliūnas’ “Mountain of Happiness” The oeuvre of Jonas Biliūnas 1879–1907 marks the birth of Lithuanian lyrical psychological prose, which was influenced by the modernist ideas of relativism. His works brought into the Lithuanian canon of realist story the motifs of transitoriness of human existence, fragility of life, sadness. Biliūnas was the first Lithuanian writer who was professionally prepared for his trade. He studied literature and related disciplines at universities in Switzerland, which gradually became a centre of Lithuanian intelligentsia already in the 19th century. The short stories written at that time indicated the writer’s maturing talent. The Alps played asignificant role in Biliūnas’ life; this is where in 1904–1907 he wrote his best works, three of which are thematically associated with the mountains: the literary sketch Fine Weather on the Uetliberg Ant Uetlibergo giedra!, the short story Snowstorm in the Mountains Pūga kalnuose and the allegorical tale The Beacon of Happiness Laimės žiburys — one of the most important works written in Zurich. A serious illness prevented the writer from fully developing his talent. On 8 December 1907 he died at the age of 28 in his wife’s arms in asanatorium in Zakopane. He was buried in Pęksowy Brzysk. Thanks to the efforts of the Lithuanian writer Antanas Vienuolis Biliūnas’ remains were brought back to Lithuania, where he was laid to rest on ahill in Liudiškiai, near Anykščiai. In 1958 a monument called “Beacon of happiness” was erected on Biliūnas’ grave. The hill with the mo­nument became asymbol the meaning of which is expressed in the tale The Beacon of Happiness. Today some people climb the hill to honour the writer’s memory, while others — believing in its sacred nature — hope that it will bring them happiness.

Abstract: This study aims to look at narrative patterns in the collection of short stories "Karaban Snow Dance" (TSK). From the fifteen short stories, the researchers took five main stories, namely the Karaban Snow Dance (Tarian Salju Karaban), The Fall of a Leaf (Gugurnya Sehelai Daun),  Canting Kinanti Song (Tembang Canting Kinanti), Jagoan Men Arrived (Lelaki Jagoan Tiba), and Origami Pigeon (Merpati Origami). Of the five short stories, environmental themes and honesty appear most often. The place setting depicted shows the environment that is close to the author or according to the author's origin. The main characters in the four short stories are children, only one short story Male Hero Tiban (Lelaki Jagoan Tiban/LJK) who uses adult takoh as the main character. The child leaders in LJK only appear in the past stories of the main characters. The five short stories do not show a picture of whole parents (father and mother). The warm relationship between mother and child appears clearly, in contrast to the father-child relationship that is almost negligent. The five short stories also represent how children become heroes for their family, friends, and environment.Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat pola narasi pada kumpulan cerpen Tarian Salju Karaban (TSK). Dari limabelas cerpen yang ada, peneliti mengambil lima cerpen utama yakni “Tarian Salju Karaban”, “Gugurnya Sehelai Daun”, “Tembang Canting Kinanti”, “Lelaki Jagoan Tiba”, dan “Merpati Origami”. Kelima cerpen menampilkan tema lingkungan dan kejujuran. Latar tempat yang digambarkan memperlihatkan lingkuangan yang dekat dengan penulis atau sesuai dengan asal usul penulis. Tokoh utama dalam keempat cerpen tersebut ialah anak-anak, hanya satu cerpen “Lelaki Jagoan Tiban” (LJK) yang menggunakan takoh dewasa sebagai tokoh utama. Tokoh anak dalam LJK hanya muncul dalam cerita masa lalu tokoh utama. Kelima cerpen tersebut tidak memperlihatkan gambaran orangtua utuh (ayah dan ibu). Relasi yang hangat antara ibu dan anak muncul dengan jelas, berbeda dengan relasi bapak-anak yang nyaris alpa. Kelima  cerpen tersebut juga merepresentasikan bagaimana anak-anak menjadi pahlawan bagi keluarga, sahabat, dan lingkungannya.

This interview was conducted on 16 May 2009 at Le Quartier Francais in Franschhoek, Cape Town, South Africa. Petina Gappah is the third generation of Zimbabwean writers writing from the diaspora. She was born in 1971 in Zambia, and grew up in Zimbabwe during the transitional moment from colonial Rhodesia to independence. She has law degrees from the University of Zimbabwe, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Graz. She writes in English and also draws on Shona, her first language. She has published a short story collection An Elegy for Easterly (2009), first novel The Book of Memory (2015), and another collection of short stories, Rotten Row (2016).  Gappah’s collection of short stories An Elegy for Easterly (2009) was awarded The Guardian First Book Award in 2009, and was shortlisted for the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, the richest prize for the short story form. Gappah was working on her novel The Book of Memory at the time of this interview.

The theme of illegitimacy Guy de Maupassant evolved in his works this article perceives as one of the factors of the author’s concept of a person and the plane of intersection of the most typical motifs of his short stories. The study of the author’s concept of a person through the prism of polivariability of the motif of a bastard is relevant in today’s revision of traditional values, transformation of the usual social institutions and search for identities, etc. The purpose of the study is to give a definition to the existence specifics of the bastard motif in the Maupassant’s short stories by using historical and literary, comparative, structural methods of analysis as dominant. To do this, I analyze the content, variability and the role of this motive in the formation of the Maupassant’s concept of a person, the author’s innovations in its interpretation from the point of view of literary diachrony. Maupassant interprets the bastard motif in the social, psychological and metaphorical-symbolic sense. For the short stories with the presentation of this motif, I suggest the typology based on the role of it in the structure of the work and the ideological and thematic content: the short stories with a motif-fragment, the ones with the bastard’s leitmotif and the group where the bastard motif becomes a central theme. The Maupassant’s interpretation of the bastard motif combines the general tendencies of its existence in the world’s literary tradition and individual reading. The latter is the result of the author’s understanding of the relevant for the era issues: the transformation of the family model, the interest in the theory of heredity, the strengthening of atheistic sentiments, the growth of frustration in the system of traditional social and moral values etc. This study sets the ground for a prospective analysis of the evolution the bastard motif in the short-story collections of different years or a comparative study of the motif in short stories and novels by Maupassant.

<p>Sebuah peristiwa, dalam kehidupan manusia, dapat menjadi inspirasi bagi penulisan sebuah cerita. Pengarang, sebagai bagian dari masyarakatnya, mengangkat relung-relung kehidupan manusia, ke dalam sebuah cerita. Namun harus dipahami, bahwa pengalaman pengarang dalam kehidupannya sehari-hari, juga mempengaruhi subjek yang ditulisnya. Saat ini tidak dapat dipungkiri lagi, bahwa teknologi komunikasi yang sangat canggih, telah mempengaruhi perkembangan karya sastra. Media penulisan karya sastra, tidak lagi melalui media cetak seperti kertas tetapi sudah melalui peralatan modern yang sesuai jamannya. Namun demikian ragam karya sastra prosa, seperti cerita pendek, justru mampu mengisi ruang media kommunikasi tersebut. Dua orang pengarang, yang menulis cerita pendek di media masa, berusaha mengangkat isu tentang lingkungan. Isu yang diangkat, lebih menekankan kepada masalah lingkungan alam dengan mengangkat isu tentang pohon sebagai bagian dari kehidupan manusia. Tujuan penelitian ini, untuk menelusuri struktur cerita pendek yang mengangkat isu lingkungan dalam jalinan ceritanya. Untuk memenuhi tujuan penelitian, langkah awal dari penelitian ini, adalah melakukan pendekatan struktur cerita, yang kemudian dikaitkan dengan pencarian makna cerita tersebut. Sering sekali di balik sebuah cerita ada pesan yang ingin disampaikan kepada masyarakat pembacanya. Bentuk pesan tersebut tersirat, dalam jalinan struktur cerita pendek tersebut. Pesan yang disampaikan, dalam kedua cerita pendek tersebut,  adalah pesan tentang lingkungan alam, yang  saat ini tidak pernah diperhatikan oleh masyarakat. Dengan alasan, kebutuhan ekonomi yang sangat dominan.</p><p><em>An event, in human life, can be an inspiration for writing a story. The author, as a part of his society, lifts the niches of human life, into a story. But it must be understood, that the author's experience in everyday life, also affects the subject he wrote.</em><em> </em><em>Today it is undeniable, that highly sophisticated communication technology, has influenced the development of literary works. Media writing literature, no longer through print media such as paper but have been through modern equipment that fit his era.</em><em> </em><em>However, the variety of prose literary works, such as short stories, is able to fill the media space communications. Two authors, who write short stories in the mass media, try to raise issues about the environment. Issues raised, more emphasis on the issue of the natural environment by raising the issue, about the tree as part of human life. The purpose of this research, is to trace the structure of short stories, which raised environmental issues in the composition of the story. To fulfill the purpose of research, the first step of this research, is to approach the structure of the story, which is then linked with the search for the meaning of the story. Very often, behind a story, there is a message to be conveyed to the readers. The form of the message is implied, in the composition of the short story structure. The message conveyed, in both short stories, is a message about the natural environment, which today is never noticed by society.
