Background and Aim: In a scenario of the ineffectiveness of the current drugs against antibiotic-resistant pathogens, the herbal extracts can serve as an alternative remedy. This study appraises the antibacterial potency of Quercus infectoria (gall), Phyllanthus emblica (fruit) individually and synergistically against antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Enteritidis in a time and dose-dependent manner. Further, the antibacterial phytocompounds were identified employing gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Materials and Methods: Preliminary antibacterial activity of the plant extracts was assessed using the agar disk diffusion method. In vitro evaluations of Q. infectoria methanolic extract (QIME) and P. emblica methanolic extract (PEME) against S. Typhi and S. Enteritidis were carried out using plate count method. Results: QIME and PEME at a dose rate of 50 mg/ml and 25 mg/ml, respectively, had a complete bactericidal effect on AMR S. Typhi and S. Enteritidis whereas 10 log10 CFU/ml of exponential growth was seen in untreated control groups. At the lower concentrations, QIME and PEME had a significant bacteriostatic effect (3-6 log10 reduction of the test isolates). The synergistic antibacterial effect obtained from the combination of these two plant extracts at 12.5 mg/ml was superior (p<0.001) than the individual treatments. Phytochemical profiling indicated the presence of tannins, flavonoids, saponins, and terpenoids in both the plant extracts. GC-MS analysis of QIME and PEME revealed the presence of 16 and 15 antibacterial phytocompounds, respectively. Further 1, 2, 3 Benzenetriol was found as the prominent active principle. Conclusion: The findings validate that QIME and PEME are potential antibacterial agents against AMR S. Typhi, S. Enteritidis and can play a promising role in antimicrobial packaging, poultry feed additives and can also serve as a platform for formulating effective phytotherapeutics.

In the search for new materials to fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a hybrid composite from metallic copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and a novel cationic π-conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) were designed, synthesized, and characterized. The CuNPs were prepared by chemical reduction in the presence of CPE, which acts as a stabilizing agent. Spectroscopic analysis and electron microscopy showed the distinctive band of the metallic CuNP surface plasmon and their random distribution on the CPE laminar surface, respectively. Theoretical calculations on CuNP/CPE deposits suggest that the interaction between both materials occurs through polyelectrolyte side chains, with a small contribution of its backbone electron density. The CuNP/CPE composite showed antibacterial activity against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Salmonella enteritidis) bacteria, mainly attributed to the CuNPs’ effect and, to a lesser extent, to the cationic CPE.

Comparative study of plant extracts crude and aqueous, methanolic and ethanolic with antibiotics, provide evidence that calotropis procera extracts has the similar antibacterial activity as these antibiotics against test pathogens i.e. Salmonella typhi and E.coli. The analysis of antimicrobial activity of aqueous, methanolic and ethanolic extract of leaves and flower of Calotropis procera was carried out in disc method and also determined MIC value at 600nm through optical density using spectrophotometer. The zone of inhibition produced by extracts was examined and compares it with zone produced by antibiotics. The effect exhibited by ethanolic extract of leaves and flower was significantly greater than the aqueous and methanolic extract of leaves and flower. Crude extracts i.e. latex, leaves, fruit and flower crude extracts. Among them, flower crude extracts shows similar zone of inhibition to test anitibiotics.while in MIC value, we made different concentration of extracts and antibiotics.i.e for crude we made 25%, 50%.75% and 100% concentration of crude juice and for the aqueous, methanolic and ethanolic we made 0.5mg/mL,1mg/mL,2mg/mL,3mg/mL,4mg/mL, 5mg/mL and 6mg/mL in Dimethyl salfoxide, and same antibiotics concentration. Aqueous leaves extracts show MIC at 0.5mg/ml against E.coli while against Salmonella it shows MIC at 1mg/ml... We also determine phytochemical analysis for presences of different compounds in crude extracts. The obtained results provide a support for the use of Calotropis procera, in traditional medicine and suggest its further advance investigation.

A new isovaleronitrile diglycoside, named microcarposide (1), together with 6 known compounds: lupeol (2), betulinic acid (3), β-sitosterol glucoside (4), methyl gallate (5), luteolin (6), and epicatechin (7), was isolated from the methanolic extract of the fruits of Detarium microcarpum Guill. Perr. The structures of the compounds were determined by extensive analysis of 1D- and 2D-1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic data in conjunction with mass spectrometry and by comparison with data reported in the literature. Compound 1 was characterized as (2 R)-2-[(6″- O-β-l-rhamnopyranosyl-β-d-glucopyranosyl)oxy]-3-methylbutanenitrile. Some of the isolated compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial activities against several microorganisms; only compound 1 was active against Salmonella typhi, Salmonella enteritidis, and Salmonella typhimurium with minimum inhibition concentration values of 153.4, 76.7, and 76.7 μM, respectively.

Context: Development of resistance in human pathogens against conventional antibiotic necessitates searching indigenous medicinal plants having antibacterial property. Seven medicinal plants used actively in folklore, ayurvedic and traditional system of medicine were selected for the evaluation of their antimicrobial activity for this study.   Objectives: Evaluation of the effectiveness of some medicinal plant extracts against four Gram-positive and five Gram-negative bacteria.  Materials and Methods: The antibacterial activity of the crude ethanolic extracts obtained from the leaves of seven medicinal plants; viz., Andrographis paniculata, Catharanthus roseus, Adhatoda vasica, Vitex vegundo, Aloe vera, Flacortia ramontchi and Nyctanthes arbortristis were tested against nine bacteria at concentrations of 300-, 400- and 500 μg/ml. Standard antibiotic disc kanamycin (30μg/ml) was used for comparison. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ethanolic extracts of the leaves of these medicinal plants were determined by testing the extracts on four Gram-positive and five Gram-negative bacteria by serial tube dilution method.   Results: All the extracts have notable antimicrobial activities against the test organisms. The ethanolic extracts of the leaves showed the highest antimicrobial activities against Bacillus megaterium and Shigella dysenteriae for An. paniculata, Ad. vasica and Al. vera; Bacillus subtilis and Salmonella typhi for C. roseus and N. arbortristis; Staphylociccus aureus and Salmonella typhi for V. vegundo; and Bacillus subtilis and Shigella sonnei for F. ramontchi respectively. The extract of the plants had MIC values ranging from 32 to 128 mg/ml. All plant extracts showed no MIC against Shigella shiga and against Sarcina lutea only C. roseus showed MIC 128 mg/ml.   Conclusion: The results revealed that the ethanolic extracts of the plants under present investigation have notable antimicrobial activities.   Keywords: medicinal plants; antimicrobial screening; MIC; bacteria. Durante los últimos años, el empleo de estos recursos vegetales o de sus productos viene incrementándose de manera importante, lo cual podría deberse a una serie de factores, entre los que destacan el conocimiento de su composición química, y al hecho que en la actualidad se han realizado numerosos ensayos farmacológicos tanto in vivo como in vitro. La aparición de cepas resistentes a los antibióticos comerciales en los últimos tiempos, está creando la necesidad de buscar otras estrategias o alternativas para controlarlas, tal es el caso del uso de las plantas (medicina tradicional), debido a los principios activos que poseen. Se pretende con este trabajo, determinar probables alternativas para combatir infecciones bacterianas de aquellos agentes drogoresistentes, este problema reviste importancia crítica particular en los países en desarrollo, donde quizás no se dispone de antibióticos de segunda línea más costosos o, si los hay, su precio es inasequible. El estudio se realizó en la ciudad de Iquitos, Provincia de Maynas, Departamento de Loreto. Los ensayos microbiológicos se realizaron en el Laboratorio de Microbiología del Centro de Investigación de Recursos Naturales de la Amazonia (CIRNA) de la Universidad Nacional de la Amazonia  Peruana (UNAP). Se determinó la actividad antibacteriana de 6 extractos vegetales (Alchornea triplinervia, Annona muricata, Averrhoa carambola, Brunfelsia grandiflora, Caraipa grandifolia y Cedrela odorata) mediante la técnica de difusión en disco, y a aquellos que presentaron actividad se les determinó la Concentración Inhibitoria Mínima y la Concentración Bactericida Mínima mediante la técnica de macrodilución en caldo. Ninguno de los extractos tuvieron actividad frente a las cepas de E. coli; cuatro extractos tuvieron actividad frente a las cepas de P. aeruginosa, siendo los extractos de Cedrela odorata y Alchornea triplinervia los que tuvieron mayor actividad frente a esta bacteria, con CIM = 15.62 y 62.5 mg/ml, respectivamente; todos los extractos tuvieron actividad frente a las cepas de S. aureus, siendo los extracto de C. odorata, A. triplinervia y Caraipa grandiflora, los de mayor actividad con una CIM = 3.91 mg/ml para cada uno.  Se obtuvieron prometedores resultados de actividad antibacteriana de los extractos en estudio frente a cepas intrahospitalarias, mayormente contra S. aureus. In recent years, the use of these plant resources or products has been increasing significantly, which could be due to a number of factors, among them the knowledge of their chemical composition, and the fact that at present there have been numerous pharmacological tests both in vivo and in vitro. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains in recent years, is creating a need for other strategies or ways to control them, as in the case of the use of plants (traditional medicine), because the active ingredients bearing. This work is intended to determine probable alternatives to combat bacterial infections of those agents antibiotic-resistant, this problem is particularly critical in developing countries, where perhaps there are no antibiotics or expensive second line, if any, price is unavailable. The study was conducted in Iquitos city, Province of Maynas, Department of Loreto. Microbiological tests were performed at Microbiology Laboratory of Research Center of Natural Resources of the Amazon (CIRNA) of the National University of the Peruvian Amazon (UNAP). The antibacterial activity of six plant extracts (Alchornea triplinervia, Annona muricata, Averrhoa carambola, Brunfelsia grandiflora, Caraipa grandifolia y Cedrela odorata) by the disk diffusion method was determined, and those that showed activity were determined Minimum Inhibitory Concentration and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration by macrodilution technique. None of the extracts were active against strains of E. coli; four extracts had activity against strains of P. aeruginosa, with Cedrela odorata and Alchornea triplinervia extracts which had greater activity against these bacteria, with MIC = 15.62 and 62.5 mg/ml, respectively; all extracts were active against strains of S. aureus, with the extract of C. odorata, A. triplinervia and Caraipa grandiflora, the most active with an MIC = 3.91 mg/ml for each. Thirty-three plants used in cooking for aroma and taste were examined for antibacterial activity against pathogens causing foodborne infections. Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Staphylococcus aureus were sensitive to many kinds of plant extracts, whereas Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Salmonella Enteritidis populations decreased in only six, one, and three plant extracts, respectively. The polyphenol content in the plants was significantly different between the antibacterial plants and nonantibacterial plants, indicating that the polyphenols were related to the antibacterial action of these plants. Antibacterial activity of various concentrations of leaf extracts from Japanese persimmon, white cedar, and grape were investigated. Japanese persimmon and white cedar leaf extracts at low concentrations affected L. monocytogenes and V. parahaemolyticus rapidly. With grape leaf extract at low concentrations, the population of L. monocytogenes decreased similarly to Japanese persimmon and white cedar leaves. This study demonstrates that many plants used in cooking for aroma and taste contain polyphenols and exhibit antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogens.

The worldwide ethnobotanical use of four investigated plants indicates antibacterial properties. The aim of this study was to screen and determine significant antibacterial activity of four plant extracts in vitro and in a poultry digest model. Using broth microdilution, the concentrations at which four plant extracts inhibited Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enteritidis, and Escherichia coli over 24 h was determined. Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb, Iris domestica (L.) Goldblatt and Mabb, Anemone chinensis Bunge, and Smilax glabra Roxb all exhibited a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 62.5 mg/L and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 500 mg/L against one pathogen. A. pilosa Ledeb was the most effective against L. monocytogenes and E. coli with the exception of S. enteritidis, for which A. chinensis Bunge was the most effective. Time–kills of A. pilosa Ledeb and A. chinensis Bunge against L. monocytogenes, E. coli and S. enteritidis incubated in poultry cecum were used to determine bactericidal activity of these plant extracts. A. chinensis Bunge, significantly reduced S. enteritidis by ≥ 99.99% within 6 h. A. pilosa Ledeb exhibited effective significant bactericidal activity within 4 h against L. monocytogenes and E. coli. This paper highlights the potential of these plant extracts to control pathogens commonly found in the poultry gastrointestinal tract.

In the course of screening of plant extracts for antimicrobial activity, the methanolic extract of Bergenia ligulata (Saxifragaceae) exhibited antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria. Fractionation of ethylacetate soluble phase of the methanol extract led to the isolation of bergenin (1), 11-O-p-hydroxybenzoylbergenin (2), 6-O-galloylarbutin (3) and epiafzelechin (4). Except bergenin, other compounds were isolated for the first time from B. ligulata. Multidrug-resistant bacteria are a significant threat to public health and new classes of antibiotics and approaches to treatment are needed. Several studies have shown that natural plant-derived compounds could be a promising mean to fight microbial resistance but only a few were conducted with antibiotic resistant bacteria. Therefore, the aim of this study was to extract phenolic compounds from the leaves, fruits, and tree trunk of Platanus hybrida and evaluate their antimicrobial activity against antibiotic resistant bacterial strains. The polyphenolic compounds were extracted using a water/ethanol (20:80) mixture. Two grams of powder of each sample was extracted with 100 mL of solvent by stirring for 2h. The extracts were redissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to a final concentration of 100 mg/mL. An antimicrobial susceptibility assay was performed using the Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion method and was tested against ten different bacteria: Listeria monocytes, Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Salmonella enteritidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. The fruits had the highest antibacterial activity showing a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 10mg/mL, contrary to the tree trunk that showed the lowest antibacterial activity. None of the extracts showed antimicrobial properties against S. enteritidis, E. faecium and E. faecalis. These results show that P. hybrida’s phenolic compounds act as antibacterial agents, which may become useful therapeutic tools and represent a source for the development of novel antimicrobials. However, they were not effective against all bacteria, which shows that polyphenols alone might not substitute antibiotics.
