COVID-19, which has become a global pandemic since March 2020, has tremendously affected human life globally. The negative impact of COVID-19 affects societies in almost all aspects. Implementing quarantine monitoring, also social distancing, and contact tracing are a series of processes that can suppress the new infected COVID-19 cases in various countries. Prior works have proposed different monitoring systems to assist the monitoring of individuals in quarantines, as well as many methods are offered for social distancing and contact tracing. These methods focus on one function to provide a reliable system. In this paper, we propose IoT-based quarantine monitoring by implementing a geofence equipped with social distancing features to offer an integrated system that provides more benefits than one system carrying one particular function. We propose a system consisting of a low cost, low complexity, and reusable wristband design and mobile apps to support the quarantine monitoring system. For the geofencing, we propose a GPS-based geofence system that was developed by taking advantage of the convenience offered by the Traccar application. Meanwhile, we add the notification for social distancing feature with adaptive distance measurement RSSI-based set up in the android application. Based on the experiment we did to validate the system, in terms of wristband-to-smartphone communication, scanning interval in smartphone and advertising interval in wristband is best to set in 7 s for both. For social distancing notification and geofence, we measure the system performance through precision, recall, accuracy, and F-measure.

AbstractA large number of landslides occur in North-Eastern Italy during every rainy period due to the particular hydrogeological conditions of this area. Even if there are no casualties, the economic losses are often significant, and municipalities frequently do not have sufficient financial resources to repair the damage and stabilize all the unstable slopes. In this regard, the research for more economically sustainable solutions is a crucial challenge. Floating composite anchors are an innovative and low-cost technique set up for slope stabilization: it consists in the use of passive sub-horizontal reinforcements, obtained by coupling a traditional self-drilling bar with some tendons cemented inside it. This work concerns the application of this technique according to the observational method described within the Italian and European technical codes and mainly recommended for the design of geotechnical works, especially when performed in highly uncertain site conditions. The observational method prescribes designing an intervention and, at the same time, using a monitoring system in order to correct and adapt the project during realization of the works on the basis of new data acquired while on site. The case study is the landslide of Cischele, a medium landslide which occurred in 2010 after an exceptional heavy rainy period. In 2015, some floating composite anchors were installed to slow down the movement, even if, due to a limited budget, they were not enough to ensure the complete stabilization of the slope. Thanks to a monitoring system installed in the meantime, it is now possible to have a comparison between the site conditions before and after the intervention. This allows the evaluation of benefits achieved with the reinforcements and, at the same time, the assessment of additional improvements. Two stabilization scenarios are studied through an FE model: the first includes the stabilization system built in 2015, while the second evaluates a new solution proposed to further increase the slope stability.

We are currently in the midst of a pandemic of SARS-COVID-19 that has spread and increased its reach geometrically in just 3 months. Different countries and states are employing multiple methods to decrease the spread of the virus and decrease its negative impact. The government of India also has taken steps to identify and trace all patients and their contacts. This requires immense input of manpower, finance and technological solutions. Models from India and all over the world act as guides in highlighting the advantages and pitfalls of this method. Models of South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore, where intensive contact tracing measures have been implemented have been successful in controlling the pandemic but have created issues of invasion of privacy. Most successful models, in the developing world have sought out to create a multi-disciplinary dedicated contact tracing team of roughly 2-3 contact tracers per 1000 population. It is important to set up a dedicated team for this so that the already stretched ASHA and other community health workers are not overburdened as more responsibilities might lead do decrease in quality. Such a team, which is sensitive to local customs and armed with basics of contact-tracing techniques, need not be highly educated. Technological solutions that keep user privacy as a priority and encourage transparent sharing of methodologies to ensure user privacy must be promoted. Solutions must ensure dissemination of information from trusted sources and self-monitoring of symptoms.

This paper is mainly aimed to develop a solar powered hand-held monitoring system for real-time crop-growth multiple environment parameter sensing and ZigBee-based wireless data transmission for Internet of Thing (IoT) applications. The proposed solar powered system successfully built a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) for quality agriculture application by using the ZigBee technology standard and TI’s CC2530 chip. Commercially available sensors were utilized specifically for temperature, humidity, soil moisture, light, chlorophyll, and CO2 monitoring. With the consideration and advantages of low power, low cost and multi-node capabilities, we chose ZigBee-based wireless network to transmit data into the cloud system for further data processing and analysis. When the sensors and Zigbee transmission system are set up, the data obtained through the human machine interface on the host will be sent to the cloud database established by MySQL in XAMPP. The management and data storage of the cloud database are both processed under the phpMyAdmin system. In addition, we use another program in XAMPP - Apache HTTP Server to set up the php website. Finally, this database of the sensing information will be used for assessment and evaluation of the environmental condition, data log recording, risk management and decision making. These resources can feed back to farmer’s cell phones through a decision support system. The experimental design and field test were verified in Tai-Yuan Organic farm located in Tao-Yuan County, Taiwan. The system will have a potential to be deployed into an open-field or green-house based farm to improve the optimized crop cultivation and increase the harvest yield.

With the aim to have risk mitigation for people and first responders, active remote sensing standoff detection is a fruitful technology, both in case of accidental (natural or incidental) or intentional dispersion in the environment of volatile chemical substances. Nowadays, several laser-based methodologies could be put in place to perform extensive areal monitoring. The present study regards the proposal for a new system architecture derived from the integration of a low-cost laser-based network of detectors for pollutants interfaced with a more sophisticated layout mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) able to identify the nature and the amount of a release. With this system set up, the drone will be activated by the alarm triggered by the laser-based network when anomalies are detected. The area will be explored by the drone with a more accurate set of sensors for identification to validate the detection of the network of Lidar systems and to sample the substance in the focus zone for subsequent analysis. In this work, methodologies and requirements for the standoff detection and the identification features chosen for this integrated system are described. The work aims at the definition of a new approach to the problem through the integration of different technologies and tools in the operative field experiments. Some preliminary results in support of the suitability of the integration hypothesis proposed are presented. This study gives rise to an integrated system to be furtherly tested in a real environment.

Nepal started its full lockdown on March 24, 2020 and has been extended until 14 June 2020 as a precaution for prevention of COVID-19 infection. However, the strict lockdown has been criticised by many as not all the deaths are caused by COVID-19. The long and strict lockdown have had some negative effects in many aspects of health of an individual in the community. Many women are facing barriers to access maternity health care during the lockdown period and there has been rise in the suicidal behaviour such as sucidal attempt and actual suicide itself among the general population. As the lockdown began in Nepal, all the school and colleges were suspended, and children were forced to spend their time indoors and exams has been postponed leaving the students stressed about the uncertainty of their future. Social distancing, isolation and quarantine at home can result in isolated in an abusive home where there could be even more increase in abuse during such crisis. Millions of babies are missing the routine vaccinations which is a threat to global achievement in immunization. Apart from the rise in negative impact on health of Nepali people, there are other impacts related to health such as serious impacts on logistics and supply management including shortage of medicine and food supply; and impacts on farming including both production and sale. Nepal took several precautionary measures as a response towards COVID-19 such as   First, limiting international air travel, sealing the land border-crossings with India and introduction of social distancing measures. However, with rise in deaths due to non COVID related causes and negative impacts on economic and financial condition of the country, there is a need for the country to ease its lockdown.  Contact tracing, making face mask mandatory along with social distancing measure can be an alternative to lockdown for Nepal while the country is preparing to ease its lockdown. Social distancing, hygiene, lifestyle factors and PPE measures need to continue for long term, whilst we need to keep working on the big public health issues such as poverty reduction, improving access to health service to achieve universal health coverage.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has resulted in many different policies being adopted across the world to reduce the spread of the virus. These policies include wearing surgical masks, hand hygiene practices, increased social distancing and full country-wide lockdown. Specifically, social distancing involves keeping a certain distance from others and avoiding gathering together in large groups. Automatic crowd density estimation is a technological solution that could help in guaranteeing social distancing by reducing the probability that two persons in a public area come in close proximity to each other while moving around. This paper proposes a novel low complexity RF sensing system for automatic people counting based on low cost UWB transceivers. The proposed system is based on an ordinary classifier that exploits features extracted from the channel impulse response of UWB communication signals. Specifically, features are extracted from the sorted list of singular values obtained from the singular value decomposition applied to the matrix of the channel impulse response vector differences. Experimental results achieved in two different environments show that the proposed system is a promising candidate for future automatic crowd density monitoring systems.

Covid-19 is a modern pandemic that has ripped through the fabric of our daily lives. We are required to limit our exposure to other people to help safeguard each other’s health. Contact-tracing/early detection serves as an effective solution for the management of Covid-19 and other similar pandemic diseases. The current popular IoT contact tracing implementations rely on a mobile-centric approach where cellular phones broadcast as beacons and nearby embedded devices log beacon interaction data locally. The proposed approach is a hybrid method that utilizes decentralized iBeacons to track individuals and a centralized cloud infrastructure to communicate/store user exposure data with BLE and Cloud access. The solution addresses potential privacy concerns and offers a simple low-cost contact tracing infrastructure set-up for offices, s chools, a nd o ther s imilar p ublic spaces.
