Sclerocarya birrea is one of many medicinal plants used in African traditional medicine for treatment of diabetes. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the ethanolic crude extract of the leaves of the plant species led to the isolation of a pure compound (CMP-1). The pure compound showed antioxidant and antidiabetic activities with average IC50 values of 1.04 mg/mL and 46 μg/mL, respectively that were well comparable to the crude extract and known standards compounds, ascorbic acid and quercetin. The spectroscopic profiling of the purified compound revealed a flavonoid derivative structural skeleton. The findings of the study suggested that the flavonoid derivative compounds play a major role towards the medicinal value of Sclerocarya birrea.

Two new diterpenoids, hypoxyterpoids A (1) and B (2), and four new isocoumarin derivatives, hypoxymarins A–D (4–7), together, with seven known metabolites (3 and 8–13) were obtained from the crude extract of the mangrove-derived fungus Hypoxylon sp. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated on the basis of 1- and 2-dimensional (1D/2D) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic and mass spectrometric analysis. The absolute configurations of compounds 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7 were determined by comparison of experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra, and the absolute configurations of C-4′ in 6 and C-9 in 7 were determined by [Rh2(OCOCF3)4]-induced ECD spectra. Compound 1 showed moderate α-glucosidase inhibitory activities with IC50 values of 741.5 ± 2.83 μM. Compounds 6 and 11 exhibited DPPH scavenging activities with IC50 values of 15.36 ± 0.24 and 3.69 ± 0.07 μM, respectively.

The crude extract of Aspergillus fumigatus isolate AF3-093A, an endophyte of the brown algaFucus vesiculosus, showed significant antimicrobial activity in initial bioactivity screens. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the extract led to the isolation of flavipin, chaetoglobosin A and chaetoglobosin B, all of which inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Ra. The antimycobacterial activity of these compounds has not been previously reported.

Ethanobotanical and traditional uses of plant Cissus quadrangularis has initiated the phytochemical investigation of the plant. The stem of the plant was subjected for successive solvent extraction with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, chloroform and ethanol. The crude extract were column choromatographed. Among 20 constituents isolated ascorbic acid, quercetin, phytol and luteol were identified. Later those phytochemicals were subjected for molecular docking in Autodock 4.2 to examine their pharmacological activity. The results obtained showed that these compounds can be further carry over for in vivo analysis.

Ethanolic extract and its n-hexane and chloroform soluble fractions of the leaves of Gardenia coronaria Buch. Ham. were screened for their bio-activities. Preliminary phytochemicals screening of crude extract revealed the presence of glycosides, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, reducing sugars and flavonoids in different extracts. In antibacterial test, maximal zone of inhibition obtained against B. cereus (15.3 mm) and in antifungal test maximal zone found against C. albicans (12.7 mm) by the chloroform extract. The crude extract of the plant exhibited notable anti-inflammatory activity. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH free radical scavenging method where the scavenging activity was concentration dependent with IC50 values of 5.15μg/ml, 8.75μg/ml and 12.71μg/ml for ethanol, nhexane and chloroform extract, respectively. In the castor oil-induced antidiarrheal assay, the crude extract of the plant significantly increased the latency and total count of defecation. Acetic acid-induced writhing reflex due to analgesia was inhibited by 31.18% (by ethanol), 23.67% (by n-hexane) and 24.73% (by chloroform) at 500 mg/kg body wt. in experimental mice. The extractives at doses from 31.25-500 μg/ml, produced inhibition of amylase activity in a dose dependent manner.Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Journal 20(2): 139-147, 2017

The Ablmoschus manihot (L.) Medic, an edible hibiscus of the Malvaceae family, is abundant with total flavonoid. The content of total flavonoid from A. manihot flowers (TFA) was extracted by 70% ethanol (ethanol:water, 70:30). The scavenging effects of TFA on superoxide anions and hydrogen radicals were related to the total flavonoid concentrations with the IC50 values of 63.90 ±2.21 μg/mL and 266.88±28.32 μg/mL, respectively. However, the IC50 values of standard ascorbic acid were 436.52 ±14.36 μg/mL and 439.58±21.41 μg/mL, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging activity increased with increasing of TFA concentrations and the highest inhibition was 94.63 ±3.01% at 50 μg/mL, as compared to ascorbic acid 34.94 ±1.50%. The extract also showed good reducing power. The data from this study suggest A. manihot flower extract has significant potential to use as health supplements and nutraceuticals.

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate antioxidant activity and phytochemical screening of ethanol extract, fractions of water, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane from mistletoe tea (Scurrula atropurpurea Bl. Dans).Methods: Simplicia extracted using soxhlet equipment with 96% ethanol. Fractionation was conducted using liquid-liquid extraction using a solvent of water, ethyl acetate and n-hexane. Screening of phytochemical and antioxidant activity was performed against these fractions. Antioxidant activity was determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl method using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry with ascorbic acid as standard. Phytochemical screening was conducted based on the method of Farnsworth.Results: The IC50 values of ethanol extract, water fraction, fraction of ethyl acetate, and n-hexane fraction were 21.92 ppm, 89.57 ppm, 14.08 ppm, and 162.09 ppm, respectively, whereas for ascorbic acid was 4.41 ppm. The ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction contained compounds were the same group, polyphenolic, tannins, flavonoids, monoterpenoid, steroids, triterpenoids, and quinones. Fraction of water contained compounds such as polyphenolic group, flavonoids, monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, steroids, and triterpenoids. n-hexane fraction compounds contained steroids and triterpenoids.Conclusion: The ethanol extract, water fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and n-hexane fraction showed antioxidant activities. Antibacterial activity of aqueous and solvent extracts of E. cotinifolia leaves were tested against some human pathogenic bacteria viz. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhi, Enterobacter aerogenes and Staphylococcus aureus by agar cup diffusion and broth microdilution methods. Antioxidant properties were evaluated for different solvent extracts by diphenyl picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen peroxide methods and IC50 values were calculated and compared with the standard ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxyanisole. Among the aqueous and organic solvent extracts, methanol and ethyl acetate, showed significant activity against B. subtilis and E. aerogenes which recorded a maximum inhibition zone of 17.25 mm. Minimum inhibitory concentration of methanol and ethyl acetate extracts for different bacteria ranged from 0.3- 1.25 mg/mL. In DPPH method, IC50 values of chloroform, petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methanol were found to be 15, 17, 18 and 19 mg/mL, respectively, lesser than the standard, ascorbic acid (25 mg/mL). Phytochemical analysis of aqueous, ethyl acetate and methanol extract showed the presence of flavonoids, terpenoids, tannins and steroids. Further work is in progress to isolate the active compound(s).

Taxotrophis ilicifolius, called "Gai quít" in Vietnam, belonged to the family of Moraceae. The stems of T. ilicifolius are used in traditional medicine to cure pimples, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial... By column chromatography method together with thin layer chromatography on the ethyl acetate extract of its stems, six compounds were isolated including wogonin (1), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (2), vanillic acid (3), vanillin (4), syringic acid (5), and syringaldehyde (6). Their chemical structures were elucidated by extensive NMR spectroscopic analysis and comparison with the literature data. The isolated compounds were tested fora-glucosidase inhibitory activity. All compounds showed more potent inhibitory activity with IC50 values 42–142 mM, than that of a positive control acarbose (IC50, 214.5 mM). Among all isolates, compounds 2, 4 and 6 exhibited significant a-glucosidase inhibitory activity with the IC50 values of 49.7, 42.6 and 55.9 mM, respectively. From the present investigation, all these compounds were isolated for the first time as well as their a-glucosidase inhibitoryactivity of T. ilicifolius. These results suggested that the traditional use of T. ilicifolius for the treatment of diabetes disease in Vietnam may be due to thea-glucosidase inhibitory activity of its phenolic constituents.

Free radicals are molecules that lose electrons in their outer orbitals so that the number of electrons becomes odd and unstable. Free radicals can damage various macromolecule cells including proteins, carbohydrates, fats. Antioxidants are compounds that can donate one or more electrons to free radicals. Avocado leaves contain high bioactive components that can be used as a source of natural antioxidants. Avocado leaves that have been dried, mashed and then shifted with methanol. The extracts were tested by phytochemical screening, including flavonpoid, phenolic, tannin and antioxidant activity using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhidrazyl) method. This method is based on the reduction of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) against free radicals which causes a change from purple to yellow 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) (DPPH). From the research, the IC50 values ​​in avocado leaves were 118.8056 µg / mL and 7,276 µg / mL on ascorbic acid as a positive control. From the IC50 value obtained, it is known that the methanol extract of avocado leaves has strong antioxidant activity to fight free radicals.
