BACKGROUND: Obesity is one of the most common noncommunicable diseases. Overweight and obesity negatively affect all spheres of human activity, leading to the development of related diseases and disability. AIMS: to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity among the adult population of the Yaroslavl region according to sex and age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The research included results of comprehensive medical examinations of 13948 persons of both sexes aged from 20 to 79 permanently residing in the Yaroslavl region. Anthropometric examination was performed by standard methods with the measurement of body weight and body length and calculation of body mass index. Overweight was defined as having a BMI to 25.029.9 kg/m2, obesity was defined as having BMI grater or equal to 30 kg/m2. The fat compound of body mass was determined by bioimpedancemetry. RESULTS: The prevalence of overweight among the adult population of the Yaroslavl region was 34.2%, obesity was 31.6%. Overweight in men of all ages was at least 1.5 times more prevalent than women, obesity in women was 1.3 times more prevalent than in men. The prevalence of firstdegree obesity was 20.9%, grade II and III 7.9% and 2.8%, respectively. The proportion of overweight and obesity increased with age, reaching a maximum of 5059 years for men and 6069 years for women. The gradient of age changes is more pronounced in women. Patients with normal body mass index had excessive fat deposition in 38% of cases. CONCLUSIONS: The study showed a high prevalence of overweight and obesity among adults in the Yaroslavl region.

Background: High body mass index (BMI > 25 kg/m2) has been found to be associated with an increased risk of many cancers, including cancers of the colon and rectum, liver, and pancreas. Aim: This study aimed to estimate the future burden of cancer resulting from current levels of overweight and obesity in Australia. Methods: The future excess fraction method was used to estimate the future burden of cancer among the proportion of the Australian adult population who were overweight or obese in 2016. Calculations were conducted for 13 cancer types, including cancers of the colon, rectum, kidney, and liver. Results: The cohort of 18.7 million adult Australians in 2016 will develop ∼7.6 million cancers over their lifetime. Of these, ∼402,500 cancers (5.3%) will be attributable to current levels of overweight and obese. The majority of these will be postmenopausal breast cancers (n = 72,300), kidney cancers (n = 59,200), and colon cancers (n = 55,100). More than a quarter of future endometrial cancers (30.3%) and esophageal adenocarcinomas (35.8%) will be attributable to high body mass index. Conclusion: A significant proportion of future cancers will result from current levels of high body mass index. Our estimates are not directly comparable to past estimates of the burden from overweight and obesity because they describe different quantities - future cancers in currently exposed vs current cancers due to past exposures. The results of this study provide us with relevant up-to-date information about how many cancers in Australia could be prevented.

We studied whether mood and demographics are related to body mass index in a population of Syrian and Iraqi refugees residing in Jordan. Questionnaires and Brunel Mood Scale were used to collect demographical data. Data were analyzed using t-test and analysis of variance. A high prevalence of overweight and obesity was observed in this population (60.5%). Mood subscales were not associated with body mass index categories. However, body mass index as a continuous variable was associated with anger, depression, and fatigue scores. Linear regression revealed that age, ethnicity, unemployment, chronic illnesses, and physical activity level, but not mood, are associated with body mass index.

Abstract: Introduction and aim: Earlier results in the literature suggest that overweight subjects show weaker performance in executive function tasks as compared to normal weight people. Dopaminergic system is strongly linked to executive functions, body mass regulation and ingestion. The aim of the present study was to examine the possible relationship between DRD4 VNTR 7-repeat allele, body mass index and Stroop performance in a healthy adult population, and to draw psychogenetic conclusions. Method: 152 subjects without diabetic or psychiatric history participated in the study. Along with non-invasive DNA sampling, demographic, weight and height data were collected. The participants also solved the computerized Stroop task. 11 subjects belonged to the underweight (mean body mass index = 17.9 kg/m2), 98 subjects to the normal (mean body mass index = 21.8 kg/m2), and 43 subjects to the overweight (mean body mass index = 28.9 kg/m2) category. After grouping participants according to their body mass index and DRD4 VNTR genotype, we compared their mean performance to investigate the possible psychogenetic associations. Results: Body mass index and stimuli type showed significant interaction on error number (p = 0.045): subjects with normal body mass index made significantly less error as compared to under- and overweight subjects in incongruent trials. The 7-repeat allele carriers made tendentiously more errors than non-carriers. Normal weight people made less error – independently from their genotype –, while subjects with either low or high BMI carrying the 7-repeat allele made more errors compared to non-carriers. Conclusion: Under- and overweight subjects perform weaker where inhibition is necessary in the task. This may reflect their reactions to food-related situations. Background: World Health Organization defines childhood obesity as “one of the most serious public health challenges”. Low income countries like Nepal experience a burden of infectious diseases as well as rising incidence of noncommunicable diseases frequently associated with obesity. There is paucity of information on childhood obesity in Nepal. Objectives: This study aims to determine the prevalence of childhood obesity and overweight in school going children and find its association with blood pressure.Methodology: A school based cross-sectional analytical study was conducted on 509 children aged between 10-16 years, studying in grade 5-10 of private schools in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. Simple random sampling technique was used for data collection. Anthropometric measurements and blood pressure were taken using standard protocol. Obesity was assessed using Body Mass Index criteria.Results: The overall prevalence of obesity and overweight in children were found to be 1.6% and 6.1% respectively. This study also showed that prevalence of obesity in children from Kathmandu is comparatively more, which was statistically significant (p<0.001). A highly significant relationship was observed for diastolic blood pressure and Body Mass Index (p<0.001) between the two groups.Conclusion: This study concludes that obesity though small in percentage, was found in rising trend when compared with previous data. Also, there was strong association with blood pressure, so timely identification and control of obesity is required for prevention of development of other cardiovascular comorbidities.

INTRODUCTION: The problem of overweight and obesity has been recognized as public health problem worldwide. This study was done to measure incidence of overweight and obesity in Nepalese adult population and to explore correlation of body mass index (BMI) with sleep habits.  MATERIAL AND METHODS: BMI was calculated from measured height and weight; sleep habit information was gathered from participants' recall. Participants were grouped into 4 BMI classes and 3 sleep groups. Groups were compared for age, gender, and other variables by ANOVA and Chi square.  RESULTS: Of the total 241 participants, 72.2% (n=174) were male. Sleep duration was adequate for 80.2% participants; 37% were overweight, 5% were obese, and 1% were underweight. BMI had no correlation with sleep duration (p value 0.753) but strongly correlated with age (p value 0.000).  CONCLUSION: Incidence of overweight and obesity is high in the Nepalese adult population. Background and Objective. According to the data of epidemiologic research, the prevalence of both excessive and insufficient body weight is increasing in a pediatric population leading to the growing burden of health problems due to these changes. The aim of the study was to understand the current situation of physical development of 9- and 10-year-old boys and girls in Latvia and to estimate the prevalence of underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity among young adolescents. Material and Methods. During 2007–2009, a random sample of healthy 9-year-old (n=184) and 10-year-old (n=320) children from all regions and different socioeconomic groups of Latvia was surveyed in a cross-sectional study. The anthropometric measurements of height, weight, 3 circumferences, and 5 skinfolds were performed. The percentage of body fat was calculated by the equation of Slaughter et al. Body mass index and fat mass index were calculated for each respondent. Children were divided into groups according to these indexes. At the age of 9 years, 69.5% of boys had a normal nutritional level either by BMI or FMI, and 54.5% and 72.2% of the girls of the same age had a normal nutritional level by BMI and by FMI, respectively. Obesity according to BMI in 9-year-old boys was found to be 4.7% and in girls 6.1%; according to FMI, 3.7% and 2.3%, respectively. A similar trend was also observed in the cohort of 10-year-old children. Conclusions. The results of the research showed that the problem of high prevalence of Latvian children with underweight is not smaller than the problem of children with obesity. Evaluation of physical development in children based only body mass index may lead to overdiagnosis of obesity.

Abstract: Correlation Between Stress Level And Body Mass Index On Medical Student Of Tanjungpura University. Stress is an unspecific body response disturbed body needs. The body mass index is an indicator for the categories of underweight, normal, overweight, and obesity. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between stress level and body mass index on the student at the medical faculty of Tanjungpura University. This study was an analitic the observasional with cross sectional design. A total of 79 students were studied. The study was conducted in medical faculty of Tanjungpura University. Data was analyzed by Spearman test . Result of this study showed that 28,6% students had mild stress level and 45,2% had normal body mass index. Spearman test showed significant correlation between stress level and body mass index (p= 0,000; r= -0,734). There was significant correlation between stress level with body mass index among medical students.Abstrak: Hubungan Tingkat Stres Dengan Indeks Massa Tubuh Mahasiswa PSPD FK Untan. Stres adalah respon tubuh tidak spesifik terhadap kebutuhan tubuh yang terganggu. Indeks massa tubuh adalah indikator untuk kategori underweight, normal, overweight, dan obesitas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan tingkat stres dengan indeks massa tubuh mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Dokter Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Tanjungpura angkatan 2013. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian analitik observasional dengan pendekatan Cross sectional. Subjek penelitian berjumlah 79 orang mahasiswa. Penelitian dilakukan di Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Tanjungpura Pontianak. Hasil penelitian diuji dengan uji statistik Rank Spearman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 24 orang (28,6%) mengalami stres ringan dan 38 orang (45,2%) dengan berat badan normal. Berdasarkan analisis statistik diperoleh nilai signifikansi (p) yang didapatkan adalah 0,000 dan nilai korelasi (r) adalah 0,734. Terdapat hubungan yang bermakna antara tingkat stres dengan indeks massa tubuh mahasiswa PSPD.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) works in synergy with the Endocrine system that affects the body-mass and height and in turn the body mass index (BMI). The ANS activities are often assessed with one index that is heart rate variability (HRV). Reduced HRV has been reported in underweight (low BMI) and overweight (high BMI) individuals, but there is scarce information available on the relationship between normal BMI and HRV. Further, as per WHO expert consultation report, the Asian population has higher percentage of body fat than their European counterparts, therefore Asian people may have greater risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease even below the existing upper edge of normal BMI. Thus it was recommended by WHO to consider the intermediate cutoff points within the normal BMI range as 18.5 Kg/m2, 20 Kg/m2, 23 Kg/m2, and 25 Kg/m2 for the Asian population. Therefore, the present study was aimed to investigate ANS activity among intermediate cutoff points of normal BMI using HRV. Seventy young individuals participated in the non-invasive and benign study. Subjects were divided into three groups based on their BMI as per the recommendation of the WHO report; NB1 (18.5<BMI≤20), NB2 (20<BMI<23) and NB3 (23<BMI<25). For all the subjects, 10 min of electrocardiogram was recorded and short term HRV analysis was carried out. Student t test was carried out to find the significance of study parameters in BMI groups. The BMI was correlated with HRV measures using Spearman’s correlation method. Statistically significant negative correlation was found between BMI and various HRV parameters. The sympathovagal balance was comparable in NB1 and NB2 group whereas it shifted towards sympathetic dominance in NB3 group. Higher sympathetic activity for BMI greater than 23 in Indian youth may lead to predictability of risks associated with overweight and obesity

Introduction: Airway hyper-responsiveness due to biochemical effects of adipose tissue related cytokines and adipokines, and mechanical changes in lung function due to obesity play an important role in outcome of asthma in obesity. In this study we correlate the severity of asthma and body mass index. Methods: Cross-sectional- observational study including 78 patients with bronchial asthma confirmed by history, physical findings and pulmonary function test attending Father Muller Medical College Hospital during November 2018- December 2019. Results Among 78 patients 27 (34.7%) had normal Body Mass Index (BMI), 35 (44.4%) were overweight and 16 (20.8%) were obese. Out of 35 overweight patients 15(46.8%) had uncontrolled asthma and 17(53%) had partly controlled asthma. Out of 16 obese patients 13(86.6%) had uncontrolled asthma and 2(13.3%) had partly controlled asthma. There was a significant correlation between BMI and asthma control with p – value <0.05. Conclusion: Partly controlled and uncontrolled asthma were partly associated with overweight and obesity. There is a need for further studies to demonstrate the effect of weight reduction in asthma control

ABSTRACT Objective To investigate the association between different domains (leisure, work, commuting, and household) of physical activity, independent and cumulative, and excess weight and obesity in Brazilian adults. Methods This is a cross-sectional survey, conducted in 2015, through telephone interviews with a representative sample of adults from the capitals of Brazil. Physical inactivity was defined as non-participation in predefined physical activities for each assessed domain. Excess weight (Body Mass Index?25kg/m2) and obesity (Body Mass Index?30kg/m2) were determined from self-reported measurements of weight and height. A binary logistic regression was conducted after adjusting for sociodemographic factors. Results Among 54,174 subjects, physical inactivity in commuting (ORexcess weight=1.27, 95%CI=1.13,1.42 and ORobesity=1.25, 95%CI=1.06,1.47) and leisure (ORexcess weight=1.12, 95%CI=1.04,1.22 and ORobesity=1.30, 95%CI=1.17,1.45) domains were associated with nutritional status. In addition, a linear trend was observed between increasing obesity and cumulative physical inactivity of all four domains (p<0.001). Conclusion Cumulative physical inactivity, especially in the commuting and leisure domains, was associated with excess weight and obesity in adults living in the capitals of Brazil. One possible explanation of these findings is that these domains involve particularly longer duration and greater intensity of physical inactivity. Public policies concerning physical activity should prioritize actions focused in promoting physical activity on commuting and leisure-time to help prevent overweight and obesity in the Brazilian adult population.
