The article is a continuation of a paper published in “Etyka”, vol. 21, Concepts of Man in the Náhuatlan Culture and contains an overview of the fundamental types of education provided by the Aztecs, with special emphasis on moral ideals. The investigation of Indian education not only furthers historical knowledge but also plays a role in the search of the origins of the specific religious, moral and behavioural expression of contemporary Mexico, due to the fact that some elements of the education preceding the Spanish conquest became an integral part of the culture of that country. The analysis to which this article bears a testimony permits the author to say that before the conquest, the Aztecs had an integral educational system, an ideal to be put into practice, adequate institutions, competent teachers, didactic material elaborated by specialists. Skill formation practised at all levels of education, was complemented by moral instruction and intellectual, religious and aesthetic guidance. The norms inculcated through training had been worked out through the ages in the náhuatl tribes and served to protect the principal values of the family and social life. They had the function of elementary moral rules and emerged from the conditions of the perennial culture of Mexican Indians. Aside from setting models of behaviour and values, the norms that the author finds in all forms of education display some differentiation which is a reflection of the multi-layered, complex structure of that culture. It embraced two different lifestyles and two ideals. Beneath the dominant religious and military habits of the Aztecs survived the old morality of the Toltecs, preserved most conspicuously in the traditional norms of family life. It has also been expressed in the poetry of the 16th and early 17th centuries.

This survey of Paetumokai, however, was not intended to be a complete social survey of a small town, but rather a study of all those organisations which in one way or another have a bearing upon family life. In order to obtain a clear picture of this a questionnaire was prepared and seventy families were interviewed. Before proceeding to a discussion of the methods and techniques I adopted for this survey I should like to present a brief sketch of the changes in general that have occurred in family life. The normal minimum family into which a child is born is one consisting of two parents in the special environment of a home. This environment changes and establishes a different background for each successive child. In all times of which we have legendary or historical knowledge the family has existed and has been responsible for the provision of the basic needs of its offspring - food, clothing, shelter and education. As time went on and the needs of mankind increased, the family, as a group, became involved in more and more duties and responsibilities until it became a complex organisation in which the participants filled many varied roles. Thus, in addition to providing the staple needs already mentioned, the family has provided work, education and apprenticeship, companionship, religion and social life. Such then was the pattern of the emerging family of historical times.

This article is an ethnographic exploration of a women’s sharia court in Mumbai, a part of a network of such courts run by women qazi (Islamic judges) established across India by members of an Islamic feminist movement called the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (Indian Muslim Women’s Movement). Building upon observations of adjudication, counselling, and mediation offered in cases of divorce and maintenance by the woman qazi (judge), and the claims made by women litigants on the court, this article explores the imaginaries of the heterosexual family and gendered kinship roles that constitute the everyday social life of Islamic feminism. I show how the heterosexual family is conceptualised as a fragile and violent institution, and divorce is considered an escape route from the same. I also trace how gendered kinship roles in the heterosexual conjugal family are overturned as men fail in their conventional roles as providers and women become breadwinners in the family. In tracing the range of negotiations around the gendered family, I argue that the social life of Islamic feminism eludes the discourses and categories of statist legal reform. I contribute to existing scholarship on Islamic feminism by exploring the tension between the institutionalist and everyday aspects of Islamic feminist movements, and by exploring the range of kinship negotiations around the gendered family that take place in the shadow of the rhetoric of ‘law reform’ for Muslim communities in India.

The article presents a comparative analysis of innovations in Ossetians family sphere and their synthesis with traditional components of family life. Special attention is paid to the peculiarities of interaction between such regulatory institutions as Ossetian customary law, church orders, and the legislation of the Russian Empire. The theoretical basis of the work is based on the concepts of those scientist who researched the problems of traditional marriage and family relations, the peculiarities of family transformation in the period of post-reform modernization. The source base for the article was previously unpublished archival materials: court cases on divorce, bride prices; the Vladikavkaz diocese correspondence with the district chief; annual reports of the district chiefs of Ossetia to the chief of the Terek region. The novelty is predetermined by a substantive appeal to innovations and their concrete results: contradictions between the traditional way of life of the family and certain transformations, for example, changes in gender stereotypes, etc. The object of the research is a traditional Ossetian family of the XIX century with customs and traditions typical for that period. Our goal is to identify the features of introducing innovations applied by Russian administration in the marriage and family sphere of the Ossetians. It should be clarified that only specific aspects of traditional norms and attitudes of the Patriarchal family are subject to scientific analysis. It is suggested that it was in the family where the most significant transformations of gender stereotypes took place, which was also reflected in some aspects of the ethnic consciousness of the Ossetians.

Surah An-Nisa is one of the longest madaniah surah, and is one full of provisions of sharia laws that govern all matters both internal and external ones for Muslims. Among the prominence of this noble surah is that it tells a lot about important things related to women, household, family, country, and social life. In this surah, there are commands and prohibitions in various matters. The purpose of this study was to extract imperative sentences related to family life and then briefly identify the rules that became the base for these commands. The researcher employed an inductive and analytical approach by extrapolating Surah Al-Nisa, taking imperative sentences related to family life, and explaining the law which is concluded from it. Researcher finds, among the most important of the most important ones are as follows: understanding the meaning of al-amr (command) which is a request to do something in the form of superiority.
