Since advertising was introduced many centuries ago, women have been objectified and, in some cases, insulted or belittled. The second wave of feminists challenged society's definition of femininity, and society's insistence on equating men with “thought” and women with “nature” and “body.” This paper aims to investigate the question of women portrayal in Pakistani media with “Jean Baudrillard theory of Simulacra and Simulation”. It focuses on how media and writing are constantly affected by hyperreality. Films, commercials, news, web-based media, and so on address fake real factors with the goal that the current world can't understand reality and innovation. Content analysis was used to emphasize how sexist media constructs an unattainable or objective image of female beauty. This paper shows how personal achievements and accomplishments are only acceptable if they meet the criteria of unrealistic beauty standards. The idea of being “perfect” is reinforced through media but mostly women are suffering with anxiety, depression and the feeling of being insecure in their homes. The fear of being inferior and rejection make them vulnerable and less competitive in society which develops a sense of passiveness and low self-esteem.Sejak dunia periklanan diperkenalkan, perempuan telah menjadi objek, dan dalam beberapa kasus mereka direndahkan dan mengalami penolakan. Gelombang feminis telah menentang definisi feminitas dan desakan masyarakat untuk menyamakan laki-laki dengan ‘pikiran’ dan perempuan dengan ‘nature’ dan ‘body’. Artikel ini bermaksud untuk menyelidiki bagaimana proses penggambaran perempuan di media Pakistan melalui teori Simulacra dan Simulasi Jean Baudrillard. Tulisan ini juga berfokus pada bagaimana media secara terus-menerus dipengaruhi oleh hiperrealitas. Film, iklan, berita, media berbasis website, dan yang lainnya membahas realitas palsu dengan tujuan agar dunia saat ini tidak memahami realitas dan inovasi. Analisis Konten digunakan untuk menekankan bagaimana media seksis membangun citra kecantikan perempuan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bagaimana pencapaian pribadi hanya dapat diterima jika telah memenuhi standar kecantikan yang tidak realistis. Gagasan untuk menjadi perempuan “sempurna” diperkuat melalui media, namun pada kenyataannya para perempuan justru mengalami kecemasan, depresi, dan perasaan tidak aman. Inferioritas dan dan ketakutan akan penolakan membuat mereka rentan dan kurang kompetitif dalam masyarakat, yang kemudian berkembang menjadi sikap pasif dan memiliki harga diri yang rendah.

This study seeks to add nuance to the definition of binge-watching by identifying the subtypes of the general practice that reflect viewer rituals, motives, and outcomes. The two subtypes are (1) the healthy practice of ‘feast-watching’ and (2) the unhealthy practice of ‘cringe-watching’. While binge-watching as a singular behavior has been associated with anxiety, depression, and loneliness, a survey ( N = 800) finds that binge-watching which is solo, accidental, and distracted (cringe-watching) predicts increased regret and decreased well-being. However, binge-watching that is planned, social, and attentive (feast-watching) predicts positive outcomes. These subtypes add much needed organizational clarity to the discussion of binge-watching, which, due to its popularity, has grown into a catchall for extended video consumption.

In the UK, tweets around COVID-19 and health care have primarily focused on the NHS. Recent research has identified that the psychological well-being of NHS staff has been adversely impacted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to investigate narratives relating to the NHS and COVID-19 during the first lockdown (26 March–4 July 2020). A total of 123,880 tweets were collated and downloaded bound to the time period of the first lockdown in order to analyse the real-time discourse around COVID-19 and the NHS. Content analysis was undertaken and tweets were coded to positive and negative sentiments. Five main themes were identified: (1) the dichotomies of ‘clap for carers’; (2) problems with PPE and testing; (3) peaks of anger; (4) issues around hero worship; and (5) hints of a normality. Further research exploring and documenting social media narratives around COVID-19 and the NHS, in this and subsequent lockdowns, should help in tailoring suitable support for staff in the future and acknowledging the profound impact that the pandemic has had.

Abstract This empirical study explores the financialization of social sustainability driven by sustainability accounting and reporting initiatives (SARIs). Since no globally accepted definition of what social sustainability encompasses exists, the paper asks how social sustainability is translated into the financial market language by SARIs as they provide standards for disclosing corporate non-financial performance and promote their concepts of social sustainability. The paper uses a two-step qualitative content analysis. First, it operationalizes social sustainability based on the empirical data of six sustainability rating agencies. Second, this operationalization is compared with the concepts created by three SARIs. The paper shows significant differences between the concepts of the SARIs and the rating agencies. While the rating agencies altogether interpret social sustainability with 83 distinct aspects, the SARIs, although differently created, use significant reduced concepts where 20% of these aspects are absent. The result of this financialization process could be a simplified and financially determined concept of social sustainability within die socially discourse. The research is limited to social sustainability and its financialization by SARIs. Individual indicators and their way or intensity to capture aspects of social sustainability were not part of the research interest. Further research should investigate the economic and the ecological pillars of sustainability as well as the usage of such financialized concepts within the society and especially by corporations. The paper unfolds the arbitrariness of operationalizing a qualitative phenomenon like social sustainability through the financial system. It discloses the need for looking at the mechanisms behind such processes and at the interests of the actors behind the frameworks. The paper reveals the financialization process driven by SARIs and demonstrates its simplifying effects on the concept of social sustainability. Furthermore, the paper shows that SARIs as metrics for non-financial aspects are troubled with a lack of transparency and a lack of convergence.

The purpose of this study is to explore the extent to which MBA programmes offered by top European and Asian B-schools have a corporate social responsibility and sustainability (CSRS) orientation as per their websites. The websites of top-200 (based on the QS Global Business and Management University Rankings 2015) European and Asian B-schools were explored and content analysed to reach meaningful conclusions. The findings reveal European B-schools have much stronger CSRS orientation once compared with the Asian B-schools. Furthermore, only few B-schools promote CSRS centres on their websites which has some useful practical implications. This is the first study to explore the CSRS orientation among top-200 European and Asian B-schools based on an analysis of their respective websites. Additionally, a cross-continental comparison between European and Asian MBA programmes is unique to this study. The results have implications for global managers, in general, and business school policymakers, in specific, to embark the CSR initiatives to gain competitive advantage.

This article represents a snapshot and analysis of U. S. service arts organizations’ DEI statements and activities in 2018. At that time, many primarily White-serving U. S. cultural organizations responded defensively to accusations of elitism and a harmful rigged funding system that maintained the status quo by awarding most cultural funding to these organizations while undermining the health and vitality of cultural organizations by and for historically oppressed communities (Sidford, 2011). Furthermore, Helicon Collaborative (2017) found that even with a host of cultural equity, “diversity” projects (Tseng 2016), and public-facing DEI statements, little had changed within six years. Therefore, this study uses directed and summative content analysis to investigate the research question “what do cultural equity and diversity statements communicate about cultural organizations’ positions on DEI?” This study also uses Frankfurt’s (2005) essay On Bullshit and Laing’s (2016) two-prong definition of accountability as a theoretical framework to examine if and how cultural organizations hold themselves accountable for achieving DEI in the creative sector. Lastly, readers should keep in mind that the public murder of Geor-ge Floyd in 2020 has hastened all of the service arts organizations’ access, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) work examined in this study.

‘Safety first’ versus ‘fighting on the barricades’: a content analysis of the nuclear debate in the Netherlands ‘Safety first’ versus ‘fighting on the barricades’: a content analysis of the nuclear debate in the Netherlands News content is often the result of an intense struggle between sources over the definition of an issue. This study content analyzes the agendas of the proponents and antagonists of nuclear energy in the Netherlands between 2002-2012 and investigates to what extent these agendas overlap with the news media agendas, including the often overlooked press agencies and regional newspapers. Analysis shows that the agenda of opponent Greenpeace – consisting of the themes of nuclear waste and risks – is slightly more visible in news agency and national newspaper content. Regional newspapers however tend to adopt the nuclear industry’s most dominant theme – safety. Interestingly enough, one regional newspaper seems to completely ignore the oppositional voice. This finding calls for a critical assessment of the relation between regional newspaper content and information subsidies.

In Canada, there is a growing interest in regulating the practices of acupuncture and Chinese herbology under the banner of ‘Traditional Chinese Medicine’ (TCM). However, the origins and definition of TCM are unclear and therefore disputed. While TCM is often used as an umbrella term to represent Chinese medical traditions that span millennia, numerous academics consider TCM to be a modern construct that has departed from the foundational roots of Chinese medicine. To better understand TCM and its implications for the profession, our study investigates: 1) historical precedents leading up to the formal creation of TCM; 2) characteristics and defining features of TCM; and 3) how this relates to education, practice and regulation of the profession in Canada. A mixed-methods study design was employed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore perceptions of individuals who contributed to mediums that discussed the formation of TCM or traditions that exist outside of TCM. In addition, an anonymous web-based survey was sent to TCM-related professional organizations, who were asked to distribute the survey to their members to capture the views of persons practicing within TCM-related health professions in Canada. Due to a lack of participation from the organizations, no survey data was collected. Interviews revealed that TCM is a product of the standardization and simplification of Chinese medicine during the 1950’s and 60’s in China to meet healthcare needs at the time. Currently in Canada, there appears to be a lack of awareness that the establishment of TCM is not a comprehensive representation of Chinese medical traditions, and that many aspects of it may not be suited to the healthcare landscape of modern-day Canada. There is a need for more discussion surrounding the identity of this new profession.

AbstractIn Europe, multiple waves of infections with SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) have been observed. Here, we have investigated whether common patterns of cytokines could be detected in individuals with mild and severe forms of COVID-19 in two pandemic waves, and whether machine learning approach could be useful to identify the best predictors. An increasing trend of multiple cytokines was observed in patients with mild or severe/critical symptoms of COVID-19, compared with healthy volunteers. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) clearly recognized the three groups based on cytokine patterns. Classification and Regression Tree (CART) further indicated that IL-6 discriminated controls and COVID-19 patients, whilst IL-8 defined disease severity. During the second wave of pandemics, a less intense cytokine storm was observed, as compared with the first. IL-6 was the most robust predictor of infection and discriminated moderate COVID-19 patients from healthy controls, regardless of epidemic peak curve. Thus, serum cytokine patterns provide biomarkers useful for COVID-19 diagnosis and prognosis. Further definition of individual cytokines may allow to envision novel therapeutic options and pave the way to set up innovative diagnostic tools.
