AbstractTo increase the usage of high-strength steel and aluminium alloy sheets for lightweight automobile body panels, the joinability of sheet combinations including a 780-MPa high-strength steel and an aluminium alloy A5052 sheets by mechanical clinching and self-pierce riveting was investigated for different tool shapes in an experiment. All the sheet combinations except for the two steel sheets by self-pierce riveting, i.e., the two steel sheets, the two aluminium alloy sheets, and the steel-aluminium alloy sheets, were successfully joined by both the joining methods without the gaps among the rivet and the sheets. Then, to show the durability of the joined sheets, the corrosion behaviour and the joint strength of the aged sheets by a salt spray test were measured. The corrosion and the load reduction of the clinched and the riveted two aluminium alloy sheets were little. The corrosion of the clinched two steel sheets without the galvanized layer progressed, and then the load after 1176 h decreased by 85%. In the clinched two galvanized steel sheets, the corrosion progress slowed down by 24%. In the clinched steel and aluminium alloy sheets, the thickness reduction occurred near the minimum thickness of the upper sheet and in the upper surface on the edge of the lower aluminium alloy sheet, whereas the top surface of the upper sheet and the upper surface of the lower sheet were mainly corroded in the riveted joint. The load reduction was caused by the two thickness reductions, i.e., the reduction in the minimum thickness of the upper sheet and the reduction in the flange of the aluminium alloy sheet. Although the load of the clinched steel without the galvanized coating layer and aluminium alloy sheets decreased by about 20%, the use of the galvanized steel sheet brought the decrease by about 11%. It was found that the use of the galvanized steel sheets is effective for the decrease of strength reduction due to corrosion.

This article presents theoretical and experimental calculations of the minimum thickness of a compensation lip used in external gear pumps. Pumps of this type are innovative technical solutions in which circumferential backlash (clearance) compensation is used to improve their volumetric and overall efficiency. However, constructing a prototype of such a pump requires long-lasting research, and the compensation lip is its key object, due to the fact that it is an element influenced by a notch and that it operates in unfavorable conditions of strong fatigue stresses. The theoretical calculations presented in this article are based on identifying maximum stress values in a fatigue cycle and on implementing the stress failure condition and the conditions related to the required value of the fatigue safety factor. The experimental research focuses on static bending tests of the lips as well as on the fatigue loading of the lips in series of tests at increasing stress values until lip failure due to fatigue. The tests allowed the minimum lip thickness to be found for the assumed number of fatigue cycles, which is 2.5 times the number of cycles used in wear margin tests.

AbstractAdditively manufactured parts typically deviate to some extent from the targeted net shape and exhibit high surface roughness due to the size of the powder grains that determines the minimum thickness of the individual slices and due to partially molten powder grains adhering on the surface. Optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based measurements and closed-loop controlled ablation with ultrashort laser pulses were utilized for the precise positioning of the LPBF-generated aluminum parts and for post-processing by selective laser ablation of the excessive material. As a result, high-quality net shape geometries were achieved with surface roughness, and deviation from the targeted net shape geometry reduced by 67% and 63%, respectively.

A detailed study has been made of the conditions under which uncharged water drops of radius 60 to 200 μm coalesce or rebound at a clean water/air interface. The variable para-­meters in the system are the drop radius, r , its impact velocity, V i , and the angle of impact, θ i ; and the dependent parameters are the time of contact, T , between a rebounding drop and the water surface, the velocity, V b , and the angle θ b with which it leaves the surface. All these have been measured. Relations are established between the drop radius and the critical values of V i and θ i at which coalescence occurs between uncharged drops and plane or convex water surfaces. Drops impacting at nearly normal incidence remain in contact with the surface for about 1 ms, lose about 95 % of their kinetic energy during impact, and rebound with an effective coefficient of restitution of about 0.2. Drops carrying a net charge and drops polarized in an applied electric field coalesce more readily than uncharged drops of the same size and impact velocity. The magnitudes of the critical charges and critical fields required to cause coalescence are determined as functions of V i , θ i and drop radius. Typically, drops of radius 150 μm impacting at 100 cm/s coalesce if the charge exceeds about 10 -4 e. s. u. or if the field exceeds about 100 V/cm. If the motion of a drop rebounding from a plane water surface is treated as simple harmonic and undamped, one may derive expressions for the depth of the crater, x and the restoring force, F , at any stage, and also for the time of contact. These yield values that are in reasonable accord with experiment. However, the collision is clearly inelastic, and a second solution is obtained when F is assumed to be proportional, not only to the displacement, x , but to x/t . This leads to a slightly different expression for the time of contact and to a calculated energy loss of 84 % compared with the measured value of 95 %. If the drop is to coalesce with the water surface, it must first expel and rupture the intervening air film. Treating the undersurface of the drop as a flattened circular disk, an expression is determined for the minimum thickness, δ, achieved by the film during the period of contact, in terms of V i , θ i and the drop radius r . This predicts values of δ ~ 0.1 μm below which fusion may well take place under the influence of van der Waals forces. Several features of the observed relations between V i , θ i and r are accounted for by this simplified theory, but the behaviour of drops impacting at nearly glancing incidence, and of relatively large, energetic drops impacting nearly normally is not. In the latter case, the observed distortion of the drop is thought to play an important role in permitting more rapid thinning of the air film and, in the case of charged and polarized drops, by producing intense local electric fields that may cause the final rupture.

To avoid excessive deflection most design codes specify the ratio (l/h)s, the span to minimum thickness of concrete members without prestressing. Use of the values of (l/h)s specified by the codes, in selecting the thickness of members, usually yields satisfactory results when the members are reinforced with steel bars. Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) bars have an elastic modulus lower than that of steel. As a result, the values of (l/h)s specified in codes for steel-reinforced concrete would lead to excessive deflection if adopted for FRP-reinforced concrete. In this paper, an equation is developed giving the ratio (l/h)f for use with FRP bars in terms of (l/h)s and (εs/εf), where εs and εf are the maximum strain allowed at service in steel and FRP bars, respectively. To control the width of cracks, ACI 318-99 specifies εs = 1200 × 10–6 for steel bars having a modulus of elasticity, Es, of 200 GPa and a yield strength, fy, of 400 MPa. At present, there is no value specified for εf; a value is recommended in this paper.Key words: concrete, cracking, deflection, fibre reinforced polymers, flexural members, minimum thickness.

The variable thickness tube drawing is a new modification in the tube drawing methods which enables production of axially variable thickness tubes faster and easier in comparison with other similar methods like radial forging or indentation forging. The production of this type of tubes can be used in optimum design of mechanical parts which do not necessarily need constant thickness along the axis of tube and this method can strikingly reduce the overall weight of parts and mechanical assemblies like cars. In this paper, the variable thickness tube drawing were parameterized in a MATLAB code and optimized with the Ls-Opt software as an optimization engine and Ls-Dyna as a FE solver. The final objective of this optimization study is to determine the minimum thickness which can be produced in one step by this method with various tube dimensions (tube thickness and outer diameter). For verification of results, some experiments were performed in the tube drawing machine which was fabricated by this research group and acceptable correspondence was observed between numerical and experimental results.

Purpose To investigate the diagnostic value of dual-layer spectral detector computed tomography (SDCT) in detecting posttraumatic prevertebral hematoma of the cervical spine by including electron density images. Methods 38 patients with post-traumatic imaging of the cervical spine were included in this study and received both SDCT and MRI examinations. MRI was set as the reference and combined conventional/electron density (C + ED) images were compared to conventional CT (CCT) images alone. Results A total of 18 prevertebral hematomas were identified. Reader 1 identified 14 of 18 and reader 2 15 of 18 prevertebral hematomas by using C + ED reconstructions. Readers 1 and 2 detected 6 and 9 of 18 hematomas on CCT, respectively. CCT showed a sensitivity of 33–50 % and a specificity of 75–80 %, while for C + ED reconstructed images the sensitivity was 77–83 % and the specificity was 85–90 %. Accuracy increased from 55–66 % to 84 % by using C + ED images. The minimum thickness for detecting hematoma on C + ED images was 3 mm. The sizes of prevertebral hematoma on CCT/C + ED were not significantly under- or overestimated compared to the MRI reference. There was a significant difference between the two readers for measuring hematoma sizes on CCT (p = 0.04). Readers showed an excellent inter-rater reliability (kappa = 0.82) for C + ED images and a moderative inter-rater reliability (kappa = 0.44) for CCT. Conclusion With SDCT, the diagnostic accuracy for detecting post-traumatic prevertebral hematoma is improved by using combined conventional and electron density reconstructions compared to conventional images alone. Surface texturing has brought significant improvements in the functional properties of parts and components. Sinker electro discharge machining (SEDM) is one of the processes which generates great texturing results at different scale. An electrode is needed to reproduce the geometry to be textured. Some geometries are difficult or impossible to achieve on an electrode using conventional and even unconventional machining methods. This work sets out the advances made in the manufacturing of copper electrodes for electro erosion by additive manufacturing, and their subsequent application to the functional texturing of Al-Cu UNS A92024-T3 alloy. A combined procedure of digital light processing (DLP) additive manufacturing, sputtering and micro-electroforming (AMSME), has been used to produce electrodes. Also, a specific laboratory equipment has been developed to reproduce details on a microscopic scale. Shells with outgoing spherical geometries pattern have been manufactured. AMSME process has shown ability to copper electrodes manufacturing. A highly detailed surface on a micrometric scale have been achieved. Copper shells with minimum thickness close to 300 µm have been tested in sinker electro discharge machining (SEDM) and have been shown very good performance in surface finishing operations. The method has shown great potential for use in surfaces texturing.
