Abstract In the present study, CFD calculations are presented for the three types of water-based nanofluids Al2O3/water, CuO/water and TiO2/water with 0.1% volume fraction. These calculations are done with ANSYS-CFX and as geometry the SRBTL test loop as scaled down test loop for a VVER-1000 reactor core design is used. The goal of this study is to evaluate the CFD program against the SRBTL test loop core as a scaled core for applying water-based nanofluids as coolant. ANSYS-CFX simulation data are validated against the RELAP5/MOD3.2 simulation data for pure water. This comparison shows a good agreement. The simulation results for the nanofluids and water including Re number, temperature, viscosity, pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient through the SRBTL test loop core are compared. The results of the comparisons show that the SRBTL test loop core is suitable to extract experimental data of water-based nanofluids for using them as coolant in the VVER-1000 reactor.

Nanofluids are colloidal solutions, which contain a small volume fraction of suspended submicron particles or fibers in heat transfer liquids such as water or glycol mixtures. Compared with the base fluid, numerous experiments have generally indicated an increase in effective thermal conductivity and a strong temperature dependence of the static effective thermal conductivity. However, in practical applications, a heat conduction mechanism may not be sufficient for cooling high heat dissipation devices such as microelectronics or powerful optical equipment. Thus, thermal performance under convective heat transfer conditions becomes of primary interest. We report here the heat transfer coefficient h in both developing and fully developed regions by using water-based alumina nanofluids. Our experimental test section consists of a single 1.02-mm diameter stainless steel tube, which is electrically heated to provide a constant wall heat flux. Both pressure drop and temperature differences are measured, but mostly here we report our h measurements under laminar flow conditions. An extensive characterization of the nanofluid samples, including pH, electrical conductivity, particle sizing, and zeta potential, is also documented. The measured h values for nanofluids are generally higher than those for pure water. In the developing region, this can be at least partially explained by Pr number effects.

The present work deals with the natural convection in a square cavity filled with the water-based Au nanofluid. The cavity is heated on the vertical and cooled from the adjacent wall, while the other two horizontal walls are adiabatic. The governing differential equations have been solved by the standard finite volume method and the hydrodynamic and thermal fields were coupled together using the Boussinesq approximation. The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of the nanoparticles? volume fraction on the heat transfer characteristics of Au nanofluids at the given base fluid?s (i.e. water) Rayleigh number. Accurate results are presented over a wide range of the base fluid Rayleigh number and the volume fraction of Au nanoparticles. It is shown that adding nanoparticles in a base fluid delays the onset of convection. Contrary to what is argued by many authors, we show by numerical simulations that the use of nanofluids can reduce the heat transfer rate instead of increasing it.

Nanofluids is an innovative study of nanotechnology applied to the traditional field of thermal engineering. It refers to the metal or non-metallic nanopowder was dispersed into water, alcohol, oil and other traditional heat transfer medium, to prepared as a new heat transfer medium with high thermal conductivity. The role of nanofluids in strengthening heat transfer has been confirmed by a large number of experimental studies. Its heat transfer mechanism is mainly divided into two aspects. On the one hand, the addition of nanoparticles enhances the thermal conductivity. On the other hand, due to the interaction between the nanoparticles and base fluid causing the changes in the flow characteristics, which is also the main factor affecting the heat transfer of nanofluids. Therefore, a intensive study on the flow characteristics of nanofluids will make the study of heat transfer more meaningful. In this experiment, the flow characteristics of SiO2-water nanofluids in two-dimensional backward step flow are quantitatively studied by PIV. The results show that under the same Reynolds number, the turbulence of nanofluids is larger than that of pure water. With the increase of nanofluids volume fraction, the flow characteristics are constantly changing. The quantitative analysis proved that the nanofluids disturbance was enhanced compared with the base liquid, which resulting in the heat transfer enhancement.

Impact of nanofluid natural convection due to magnetic field in existence of melting heat transfer is simulated using CVFEM in this research. KKL model is taken into account to obtain properties of CuO–H2O nanofluid. Roles of melting parameter (δ), CuO–H2O volume fraction (ϕ), Hartmann number (Ha), and Rayleigh (Ra) number are depicted in outputs. Results depict that temperature gradient improves with rise of Rayleigh number and melting parameter. Nusselt number detracts with rise of Ha. At the end, a comparison as a limiting case of the considered problem with the existing studies is made and found in good agreement.

Experiments were conducted to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of water-based suspensions of phase change nanocapsules in a natural circulation loop with mini-channel heat sinks and heat sources. A total of 23 and 34 rectangular mini-channels, each with width 0.8 mm, depth 1.2 mm, length 50 mm and hydraulic diameter 0.96 mm, were evenly placed on the copper blocks as the heat source and heat sink, respectively. The adiabatic sections of the circulation loop were constructed using PMMA tubes with an outer diameter of 6 mm and an inner diameter of 4 mm, which were fabricated and assembled to construct a rectangular loop with a height of 630 mm and a width of 220 mm. Using a core material of n-eicosane and a shell of urea-formaldehyde resin, the phase change material nanocapsules of mean particle size 150 nm were fabricated successfully and then dispersed in pure water as the working fluid to form the water-based suspensions with mass fractions of the nanocapsules in the range 0.1–1 wt.%. The results clearly indicate that water-based suspensions of phase change nanocapsules can markedly enhance the heat transfer performance of the natural circulation loop considered.

Temperature dissipation in a proficient mode has turned into a crucial challenge in industrial sectors because of worldwide energy crisis. In heat transfer analysis, shell and tube thermal exchangers is one of the mostly used strategies to control competent heat transfer in industrial progression applications. In this research, a numerical analysis of turbulent flow has been conceded in a shell and tube thermal exchanger using Kays-Crawford model to investigate the thermal performance of pure water and different concentrated water-MWCNT nanofluid. By means of finite element method the Reynold-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and heat transport equations along with suitable edge conditions have been worked out numerically. The implications of velocity, solid concentration, and temperature of water-MWCNT nanofluid on the fluid flow formation and heat transfer scheme have been inspected thoroughly. The numerical results indicate that the variation of nanoparticles solid volume fraction, inflow fluid velocity and inlet temperature mannerism considerably revolutionize in the flow and thermal completions. It is perceived that using 3% concentrated water-MWCNT nanofluid, higher rate of heat transfer 12.24% is achieved compared that of water and therefore to enhance the efficiency of this heat exchanger. Furthermore, a new correlation has been developed among obtained values of thermal diffusion rate, Reynolds number and volume concentration of nanoparticle and found very good correlation coefficient among the values.

Turbulent forced convection ofγ-Al2O3/water nanofluid in a concentric double tube heat exchanger has been investigated numerically using mixture two-phase model. Nanofluids are used as coolants flowing in the inner tube while hot pure water flows in outer tube. The studies are conducted for Reynolds numbers ranging from 20,000 to 50,000 and nanoparticle volume fractions of 2, 3, 4, and 6 percent. Results showed that nanofluid has no effects on fully developed length and average heat transfer coefficient enhances with lower slope than wall shear stress. Comparisons with experimental correlation in literature are conducted and good agreement with present numerical study is achieved.

In this study, the effect of solid-liquid volumetric ratio in laminar flow of nanofluid has been investigated numerically. The conservation equations are utilized in three dimensional elliptical forms for laminar and steady flow, and the effects of adding aluminum oxide nanoparticles to water based-fluid are studied. First, the influence of solid-liquid volumetric ratio on the secondary flow vortices, non-dimensional temperature is investigated for a flow with a fixed low Reynolds number and different Grashof numbers in a horizontal pipe. Then, the effect of variation in solid-liquid volumetric ratio on Nusselt number and convective heat transfer coefficient along the pipe is studied. The results of this study are in good agreement with the current literatures.

The aim of this research is to investigate experimentally the characteristics of the convective heat transfer and exergy analysis of pure water and water based Al2O3 nanofluid through helical coiled tubes (HCTs) and conical coiled tubes (CCTs) inside shell and coil heat exchangers. HCT and CCT fabricated with different coil torsions (λ) ranges from 0.0202 to 0.052 with different two angles (0° and 45°) while have the same curvature ratio (δ = 0.0564). The effects of mean coil torsion, the cone angle and nanoparticles volume concentration on the thermal performance were investigated. Results indicated that the overall heat transfer coefficient (Uov), convection heat transfer coefficient (ht), the tube side Nusselt number (Nut), effectiveness (ɛ) and exergy efficiency (ηex) of nanofluids are higher than those of the pure water at same flow condition, and this increase goes up with the increase in particle volume concentration (ϕ). The results also showed that Uov, ht, Nut, ɛ and ηex increases by decreasing the coil torsion from 0.052 to 0.0202. Correlations for Nut as a function of the investigated parameters are obtained.
