Currently, contributions of socio-rethorical research, specific teaching and applied linguistics have shown extensively that learning contents in a discipline implies the gradual appropriation of particular ways of thinking and reading in a certain field of knowledge. Nevertheless, it is not clear yet in which way/s the relationship between how to read and how to learn to (re)construct the content of a particular discipline take place in a classroom. Drawing from this situation, the purpose of this study was to identify and analyze how and with which meanings, teachers and students connect learning history contents with characteristic ways of reading in History. For that purpose, we observed and recorded all classes that took place during the second semester of a scholar year in three courses of a History pre-service teachers’ program imparted in Buenos Aires. Simultaneously, in-depth interviews to students and educators were conducted. The qualitative analysis of the collected data shows that participants report reading modes similar to those that, according to various studies, experts in History report. In this article, we analyze particularly two of the most frequent ways of reading that students reported in the interviews: 1) read to analyze the historical perspective or historiographical work of authors; and 2) read to understand processes versus read to memorize dates and events. Results show that students can ascribe to these ways of readin, a disciplinary sense –seeking to perform them on their own– or an arbitrary sense –trying to reproduce/imitate the professor’s own interpretations about texts they do not fully undestand–. The attribution of a disciplinary or arbitrary sense seems closely related on whether the aforementioned ways of reading in History are contextualized and put into play in dialogic or monologic teaching and learning class-environments. Since many educational policies emphasize the importance to prepare “teachers as researchers”, showing the necessary interpenetration of instruction and knowledge production activities, our study contributes to the discussion about how pedagogical practices can promote or hinder History pre-service teachers’ disposition to read, study and learn about what they read, positioning themselves as legitimate interpreters and (re)constructors of the disciplinary content knowledge they will teach in the future, instead of just as reproducers of other’s interpretations.

International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes are growing rapidly worldwide, driven in part by their global reputation and concept-driven, inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. This thematic review of a range of literature sources examines the impact of IB programmes on teaching and learning, highlighting trends, challenges, and benefits. Findings of the review revealed that most of the studies, both qualitative and quantitative, examined stakeholders’ perspectives or self-reported experiences of IB programmes; a very small number used research designs that control for confounding factors or allow causal inferences to be drawn. A wide range of stakeholders report that IB programmes develop research and critical thinking skills, intercultural appreciation and global awareness, as well as cultivate collaborative working cultures and creative pedagogical practices among teachers. Challenges include extra demands on teachers for lesson planning and assessment, additional stress for teachers and students, and competing demands and expectations with national requirements. Recommendations are provided which may guide future research endeavours.

Pedagogical practices from the cinema as an experience without a strength shirt AbstractThis article presents the results of a research that aimed to investigate the details in the daily life of a classroom with children between 6 and 7 years from “Ensino Fundamental I” when experiencing the meeting of the cinema in the school. Moreover, this paper intends to understand what kind of pedagogical practices can be built from the experience of cinema, and how this experience can promote /create/affect/transmit/transform students and stimulate the production of knowledge. We also investigate how the relationship between children and cartoons, inspired by the Pica Pau Amarelo Site, leads to a learning process that allows a reading of the world in which the children’s previous experiences are added to the experience of the cinema itself. Regarding the methodology, it is a research that is inserted in the qualitative approach, with the use of bibliographical, documentary and action research. The data were analyzed through the analysis of content brought by (BARDIN, 1979). The results / conclusions / or the final considerations point out that the cinema in the school makes possible the construction of pedagogical practices, like human formation of the students who are in contact with the world to provoke movements of appropriation, revelation and creation, building a link between the cinema and education and cinema in the school. This process reveals potentialities to think about education in the country. Keywords: Cinema. School. Pedagogical practices. Knowledge production. Education. Today, cybersecurity is a growing issue in our education society to ensure a safe teaching and learning process for teachers and students. Reports and studies demonstrated that teachers and students are moderately aware of the cybersecurity threat surrounding them that could affect the learning curve and other fatal impacts. This study aims to identify the role of self-efficacy in the relationship between knowledge, attitude, and environment behavior of cybersecurity awareness. The researchers used a correlational design with a quantitative approach by using a questionnaire instrument to collect data from teacher respondents. A total of 350 teachers in took part in this survey voluntarily, distributed using social media applications in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. The researchers used the IBM SPSS Statistics to analyze the data descriptively and inferentially. The levels of knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, and environment behavior of Malaysian school teachers towards cybersecurity awareness are low. Self-efficacy acts as a moderator in influencing the relationship between knowledge, attitude, and environment behavior of cybersecurity awareness. Strategies and programs need to be initiated by stakeholders to increase the self-efficacy of cybersecurity that could assist the positive change of environment behavior among teachers for teaching and learning benefit.

ABSTRACT Based on the idea of the teacher as an agent of transformation, we present the strategic approach used in one primary school with kindergarten, with the purpose of promoting the use of digital technologies as an enrichment of the teaching and learning strategies, under the initiative of one of the teachers in response to the weak conditions in the school so that it would become possible with the expected naturality. An ICT (Information and Communication Technology) laboratory was created. Through gathering all the school’s technological resources and providing different work environments (similarly to the “classrooms of the future”), projects -transversally articulated with the curriculum - are developed, and ICT and transversal skills are promoted. School teachers and students recognize that the activities performed in the ICT lab have been enriching and meaningful learning activities, which allow the deepening of acquired knowledge and the development of skills, as illustrated by the preliminary results presented in this text. Keywords: Digital technologies. Teachers, Pedagogical Practices. Innovative learning environments. The study examined how teacher educators are appropriating technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) and substitution, augmentation, modification, redefinition (SAMR) frameworks in their pre-service teacher preparation programmes. To ensure rigor, quality, and preparedness of pre-service teachers, there is a need to articulate expectations around effective use of these frameworks together with contemporary teaching and learning theories at the pre-service teacher preparation level. One-on-one in-depth interviews and participant observations were conducted with eight (8) teacher educators. The findings revealed that teacher educators are appropriating technology in ways harmonious with their prevalent traditional teacher-centred teaching strategies at enhancement levels. The researchers recommend the adoption of technology integration frameworks and teaching and learning theory at policy making levels in pre-service teacher training institutions.

Shannon teaches undergraduate and graduate mathematics content courses at the University of Dayton in Ohio. Her main interests include the appropriate use of technology in K–12 mathematics, preservice and inservice teachers' pedagogical content knowledge, and the teaching and learning of geometry. We are always looking for new and interesting ways for teachers and students to use technology effectively. If you have a tip that can help other teachers learn how to use a technology application in the classroom, please send ideas to my contact address. I also would like to take the time to thank Hollylynne Stohl Lee for her amazing dedication and guidance as editor of the column last year.

This Special Issue focuses on the learning of qualitative research as a legitimate and productive site of inquiry with the potential to illuminate and advance pedagogical practices. Its three objectives were (1) empowering and giving voice to new generations of qualitative research practitioners, (2) facilitating dialogue across the divide between the teaching and learning of critical qualitative research, and (3) mapping out a space of knowledge production and accumulation in critical qualitative research. The Issue includes five articles written by junior scholars or graduate students with or under the supervision of their mentors/supervisors. From different angle and to varying degrees, they touch on the role of teacher in the teaching/learning, the emotional aspect of learning, and the institutional context within which the learning takes place.

The effect of reading on general communicative competence remains a focus of second language acquisition research. Extensive reading, in particular, provides rich input and helps learners acquire languages. Research has provided findings that support the value of extensive reading (ER); however, there is scant evidence to date showing the relationship of extensive reading to overall competence and, particularly, writing competence. The present study investigated the relationship of ER to overall English language competence as well as teachers’ and students’ views about its implementation. The participants were 190 Taiwanese university freshmen and their three English instructors. The data includes scores on pre- and post-tests measuring students’ listening, reading, and writing as well as questionnaire responses and interview accounts. The findings of the study indicate that the effectiveness of ER for the student participants is partially supported and, hence, have implications for English teaching and learning in EFL contexts.
