At present, special attention is drawn to the study of the adaptation of aquatic organisms to a complex of environmental factors precisely at the cellular level. It is very important to study the structural and functional features of the kidney, which not only plays a key role in osmoregulation, but also makes a significant contribution to maintaining homeostasis at the level of functioning of a single nonspecific defense system of the body. In this aspect, the study of species belonging to a unique ancient group, united in the order salmoniformes, is highly relevant. Using the methods of light and electron microscopy, we investigated the morphology and ultrastructure of the mesonephros of the population of the semianadromous ecological form European smelt Osmerus eperlanus inhabiting the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea and performing spawning migrations in the Luga River of the Leningrad Region. The general scheme of the trunk kidney organization is given, the structural features and the ratio of leukocytes and structures of the smelt nephron are revealed. It is shown that the development of hematopoietic tissue in the mesonephros, the number of mature forms of granulocytes are systematic signs which do not depend on the ecology of the species. The ratio of leukocytes, the width of the cisterns of the rough endoplasmic reticulum of plasma cells, the structure and number of granules in granulocytes are associated with the peculiarities of the functioning of the cellular link of the immune system under certain conditions of the species habitat. The ultrafine structure of the ion-transporting interstitial cells, as well as the ultrastructural features found in the smelt nephron, can be considered cytological markers of smelt adaptation to a semianadromous lifestyle.

Oxygen–ozone (O2–O3) therapy is increasingly applied as a complementary/adjuvant treatment for several diseases; however, the biological mechanisms accounting for the efficacy of low O3 concentrations need further investigations to understand the possibly multiple effects on the different cell types. In this work, we focused our attention on fibroblasts as ubiquitous connective cells playing roles in the body architecture, in the homeostasis of tissue-resident cells, and in many physiological and pathological processes. Using an established human fibroblast cell line as an in vitro model, we adopted a multimodal approach to explore a panel of cell structural and functional features, combining light and electron microscopy, Western blot analysis, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and multiplex assays for cytokines. The administration of O2–O3 gas mixtures induced multiple effects on fibroblasts, depending on their activation state: in non-activated fibroblasts, O3 stimulated proliferation, formation of cell surface protrusions, antioxidant response, and IL-6 and TGF-β1 secretion, while in LPS-activated fibroblasts, O3 stimulated only antioxidant response and cytokines secretion. Therefore, the low O3 concentrations used in this study induced activation-like responses in non-activated fibroblasts, whereas in already activated fibroblasts, the cell protective capability was potentiated.

The relevance of the article is determined by the existence of contradictions between the need to introduce innovative technologies into the educational process at school, as an integral attribute of modern education, and the negative influence of factors on the physical and psycho-emotional state of health of students related to the use of information and communication tools (computers, phones, headphones). The goal of the study was to assess the relationship between the timing of the use of information and communication tools and the frequency of functional and psycho-emotional complaints in groups of middle and high school schoolchildren. 400 schoolchildren of the Saratov Region, the Moscow Region, Leningrad Region and the Republic of Dagestan were surveyed, who made up two groups of research: middle-school schoolchildren (grades 5–6) and high-school schoolchildren (grades 10–11 The survey was carried out by means of the standardized formalized cards which included the questions considering usage time of computers and mobile phones, complaints to a headache, hands pain, other pain and/or feeling of discomfort from visual organ and the organs of hearing, as well as a psycho-emotional state. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the STATISTICA application software program by StatSoft Inc (USA). To compare the frequencies of a binary feature, a fourfold table of absolute frequencies was constructed and the level of statistical significance for the exact Fisher’s two-tailed test criterion was determined. The study was conducted according to the requirements of bioethics, after signing informed consent statement by teenagers and their parents. The study examined the relationship between the timing of the use of information and communication tools and the frequency of complaints in groups of schoolchildren. The results of the study should be taken into account when developing and implementing preventive measures to prevent negative effects of computers and mobile devices on the body of students.

Long life expectancy of populations in the developing world together with some cultural and social issues has driven the need to pay special attention to health and physical appearance. Cosmeceuticals are gaining interest in the cosmetic industry as their uses fulfills a double purpose: the requirements of a cosmetic (clean, perfume, protect, change the appearance of the external parts of the body or keeping them in good condition) with a particular bioactivity function. The cosmetics industry, producing both cosmetics and cosmeceuticals, is currently facing numerous challenges to satisfy different attitudes of consumers (vegetarianism, veganism, cultural or religious concerns, health or safety reasons, eco-friendly process, etc.). A currently growing trend in the market is the interest in products of low environmental impact. Marine origin ingredients are increasingly being incorporated into cosmeceutical preparations because they are able to address several consumer requirements and also due to the wide range of bioactivities they present (antioxidant, whitening, anti-aging, etc.). Many companies claim “Marine” as a distinctive marketing signal; however, only a few indicate whether they use sustainable ingredient sources. Sustainable marine ingredients might be obtained using wild marine biomass through a sustainable extractive fishing activity; by adopting valorization strategies including the use of fish discards and fish by-products; and by sustainably farming and culturing marine organisms.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is rare in Bangladesh although very few case reports are seen since last few years. But Visceral Leishmaniasis (kala azar) and PKDL are common in this region. In country like ours where tuberculosis and leprosy are more prevalent Cutaneous Leishmaniasis is very likely to be mistreated as Cutaneous tuberculosis especially lupus vulgaris or leprosy. Cases of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) are usually imported to Bangladesh from other endemic countries. A patient from an endemic area of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, a non-healing nodulo-ulcerative lesion on exposed part of the body, dermal infiltration with lymphocytes, histiocytes and plasma cells and demonstration of intracellular parasites in lesional skin establish the diagnosis of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis. We present a case of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in a Bangladeshi adult working in Saudi Arabia for more than 15 years. He presented with multiple ulcerative lesions on nasal bridge, right ear lobule and dorsum of right ring finger. The patient’s clinical history, morphology of the lesions and laboratory analysis were consistent with Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, a rare entity for Bangladesh.Bangladesh J Medicine Jul 2014; 25 (2) : 78-80

Multiple myeloma is the second more frequently haematological cancer in the western world, after non-Hodgkin lymphoma, being about the 1-2 % of all the cancers cases and the 10-13% of hematologic diseases. The disease is caused by an uncontrolled clonal proliferation of plasma cells in the bone marrow that accumulate in different parts of the body, usually in the bone marrow, around some bones, and rarely in other tissues, forming tumor deposits, called plasmocytomas. This uncontrolled clonal proliferation of plasma cells produces the secretion of an abnormal monoclonal immunoglobulin (paraprotein or M-protein) and prevents the formation of the other antibodies produced by the normal plasma cells that are destroyed. The anormal secretion of paraproteins unbalance the osteoblastosis and osteoclastosis processes, leading to bone lesions that cause lytic bone deposits and the release of calcium from bones (hypercalcemia) that may produce renal failure. Regions affected by bone lesions are the skull, spine, ribs, sternum, pelvis and bones that form part of the shoulders and hips. The substitution of the healthy bone marrow by infiltrating malignant cells and the inhibition of the normal production of red blood cells produce anaemia, thrombocytopenia and leukopenia. Multiple myeloma patients are immunosuppressed because of leukopenia and the abnormal immunoglobulin production caused by the uncontrolled clonal proliferation of plasma cells, being susceptible to bacterial infections, like pneumonias and urinary tract infections. The interaction of immunoglobulin with hemostatic mechanisms may lead to haemorrhagic diathesis or thrombosis. Also, disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system are part of the disease, being the more common neurological manifestations the spinal cord compressions and the peripheral neuropathies.

Abstract Background Fibrous sclerosing tumours and hypertrophic lesions in IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) are formed in various organs throughout the body, but disease in the oral region is not included among individual organ manifestations. We report a case of ossifying fibrous epulis that developed from the gingiva, as an instance of IgG4-RD. Case presentation A 60-year-old Japanese man visited the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Gunma University Hospital, with a chief complaint of swelling of the left mandibular gingiva. A 65 mm × 45 mm pedunculated tumour was observed. The bilateral submandibular lymph nodes were enlarged. The intraoperative pathological diagnosis of the enlarged cervical lymph nodes was inflammation. Based on this diagnosis, surgical excision was limited to the intraoral tumour, which was subsequently pathologically diagnosed as ossifying fibrous epulis. Histopathologically, the ossifying fibrous epulis exhibited increased levels of fibroblasts and collagen fibres, as well as infiltration by numerous plasma cells. The IgG4/IgG cell ratio was > 40%. Serologic analysis revealed hyper-IgG4-emia (> 135 mg/dL). The patient met the comprehensive clinical diagnosis criteria and the American College of Rheumatology and European League Against Rheumatism classification criteria for IgG4-RD. Based on these criteria, we diagnosed the ossifying fibrous epulis in our patient as an IgG4-related disease. A pathological diagnosis of IgG4-related lymphadenopathy was established for the cervical lymph nodes. Concomitant clinical findings were consistent with type II IgG4-related lymphadenopathy. Conclusions A routine serological test may be needed in cases with marked fibrous changes (such as epulis) in the oral cavity and plasma cells, accompanied by tumour formation, to determine the possibility of individual-organ manifestations of IgG4-related disease.

Someone's understanding and stance on a particular controversial topic can be influenced by daily news or articles he consume everyday. Unfortunately, readers usually do not realize that they are reading controversial articles. In this paper, we address the problem of automatically detecting controversial article from citizen journalism media. To solve the problem, we employ a supervised machine learning approach with several hand-crafted features that exploits linguistic information, meta-data of an article, structural information in the commentary section, and sentiment expressed inside the body of an article. The experimental results shows that our proposed method manages to perform the addressed task effectively. The best performance so far is achieved when we use all proposed feature with Logistic Regression as our model (82.89\% in terms of accuracy). Moreover, we found that information from commentary section (structural features) contributes most to the classification task.

The process of making a medical decision is characterized by a lack of knowledge and inconsistency of the available information, the lack of the possibility of attracting competent medical experts, limited time resources, incomplete or inaccurate information about the patient's condition. These aspects may be the causes of medical errors, which lead to further aggravation of the problem situation. Purpose – it is necessary to define and justify managerial medical decisions and types of medical information in conditions of uncertainty, when each variant of the sets of outcomes of the situation (recommendations) has its own unique set of values. The fundamental difference between this process for medical use is the concept of the "best medical solution", in which the key role is given to the patient's state of health in obtaining and evaluating alternatives, as well as the need to take into account the time, adverse reactions of the body and the costs of implementing this solution. In the medical field, support for medical decision-making can be classified as organizational-managerial and therapeutic-diagnostic, but both are determined by the position of the person making the medical decision and are aimed at effective management of the medical institution as a whole. The article describes the causes and factors of the nature of uncertainty in the tasks of supporting medical decision-making in medical-diagnostic and organizational-managerial areas. The analysis of the features of supporting medical decision-making in conditions of uncertainty is carried out. Approaches and directions in this area, as well as the concept of “solution”, are considered. The essence of the management medical decision is reflected. The classification of management medical decisions is given, the requirements that are imposed on them are highlighted. The features of the development of management medical solutions in the conditions of incompleteness and uncertainty, the problems that arise when they are implemented in information systems are presented. The general scheme of the process of creating a management medical solution is shown. The features of making group and individual decisions are reflected. The algorithm of actions of the person making the medical decision in the conditions of uncertainty, incompleteness and risk in medical subject areas is presented.

The integument of Peripatopsis moseleyi has been examined by light and electron microscopy with particular reference to the structure and formation of the cuticle. The evidence supports the idea that Peripatus is a true arthropod but not that it has direct affinities with the annelids. The characteristics of arthropod cuticle are present in their simplest form and pore canals and dermal glands are lacking. The cuticle is 1 or 2 µ, thick except in the hardened claws and spines. Above the procuticle (chitinprotein) is a thin 4-layered epicuticle. It is possible that the innermost of the 4 layers (prosclerotin) may correspond to cuticulin of other arthropods. In the claws and spines tanning in this layer extends to the procuticle. Hydrofuge properties of the cuticle probably depend on the outer layers of epicuticle, and it is suggested that the lamina concerned might consist of oriented lipid associated with lipoprotein (Dr. J. W. L. Beament). Wax and cement are absent. Non-wettability of the cuticle is probably ensured by the contours of micropapillae which cover the surface. Similar structures arise in Collembola and other terrestrial arthropods by convergence. The formation of new cuticle before ecdysis is described. After the epicuticular layers are complete, the bulk of the procuticle is laid down in a manner probably common to all arthropods. Secreted materials originate in small vesicles derived from rough endoplasmic reticulum and from scattered Golgi regions. The latter contribute to larger vacuoles which rise to the surface of the cell and liberate material in a fluid state. This later consolidates to form procuticle. Vesicles may also open to the surface directly, and ribosomes probably occur free in the cytoplasm. At this stage the cell surface is reticulate, especially under micropapillae. The ordinary epidermis has only one kind of cell, attached to the cuticle by tonofibrils disposed like the ribs of a shuttlecock, and to the fibrous sheaths of underlying muscle-fibres by special fibres of connective tissue. These features and the presence of numerous sensory papillae are associated with the characteristic mobility of the body wall. The appearance of epidermal pigment granules, mitochondria, the nuclear membrane, and a centriole are noted. No other cells immediately concerned in the formation of cuticle have been found. By contrast myriapods, which do not have wax either, possess dermal glands secreting far more lipid than is found in the Onychophora. The wax layer found in insects and some arachnids constitutes an advance of high selective value which emphasizes the primitive condition of the Onychophora. It is noted that the thick layer of collagen separating the haemocoel from the epidermis probably restricts the transfer of materials. It is suggested that since some features of cuticular structure and formation appear to be common to all arthropods, it is possible that some of the endocrine mechanisms associated with ecdysis may also be similar throughout the phylum.

Tissue culture platforms have been around for several decades and have enabled numerous key findings in the cardiovascular field. However, these platforms fail to recreate the mechanical and dynamic features found within the body. Organs-on-chips (OOCs) are cellularized microfluidic based devices that can mimic the basic structure, function, and responses of organs. These systems have been successfully utilized in disease, development, and drug studies. OOCs are designed to recapitulate the mechanical, electrical, chemical, and structural features of the in vivo microenvironment. Here, we review cardiovascular-themed OOC studies, design considerations, and techniques used to generate microtissues within these devices. Further, we will highlight the advantages of OOCs over traditional cell culture methods, discuss implementation challenges, and provide perspectives on the state of the field.
