Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of the superficial application of two different modeling resins on the surface microhardness and discoloration of composite resins. Material and Methods: The present study used two different composites and modeling resins. The composites were placed in plastic molds. Subsequently, the modeling resins were applied on the surface of the two composite groups. The microhardness and color pertaining to all the groups were evaluated. The current study used the One-Way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis tests, in order to perform the statistical evaluation (p<0.05). Results: The present study compared the microhardness pertaining to the groups and the highest microhardness values were observed in the Estelite Asteria group (none), whereas the lowest values were observed in the GC Essentia group (Ultradent). Moreover, the current study evaluated the color stability and the greatest discoloration was observed in the control group of the GC Essentia group, whereas the least discoloration was observed in the Estelite Asteria group that included the samples prepared using Ultradent Wetting Resin. Conclusions: The results of the present study demonstrated that the use of modeling resins, which facilitate the placement of composite resins, reduced the microhardness and discoloration of composite resins. The aforementioned effect can be attributed to the variations in the structure of the filling. However, further studies are warranted to support and verify the results of the current study.

This study aims to evaluate the change in gait spatiotemporal parameters in subjects with Parkinson’s disease (PD) before and after Automated Mechanical Peripheral Stimulation (AMPS) treatment. Thirty-five subjects with PD and 35 healthy age-matched subjects took part in this study. A dedicated medical device (Gondola) was used to administer the AMPS. All patients with PD were treated in off levodopa phase and their gait performances were evaluated by an inertial measurement system before and after the intervention. The one-way ANOVA for repeated measures was performed to assess the differences between pre- and post-AMPS and the one-way ANOVA to assess the differences between PD patients and the control group. Spearman’s correlations assessed the associations between patients with PD clinical status (H&Y) and the percentage of improvement of the gait variables after AMPS (α<0.05for all tests). The PD group had an improvement of 14.85% in the stride length; 14.77% in the gait velocity; and 29.91% in the gait propulsion. The correlation results showed that the higher the H&Y classification, the higher the stride length percentage of improvement. The treatment based on AMPS intervention seems to induce a better performance in the gait pattern of PD patients, mainly in intermediate and advanced stages of the condition.

ABSTRACT Aim The aim of this article is to evaluate the influence of finishing and polishing techniques on the surface roughness and microhardness of two composite resins with two different types of polishing systems. Materials and methods A total of 30 disk-shaped specimens of nanocomposite Filtek™ Z350 and Ceram-X® were prepared. They were divided into three groups. The control group (n = 10) received no finishing and polishing. The remaining specimens were divided into two groups, and they received polishing and finishing either with PoGo or Sof-Lex system. After the polishing procedures, average surface roughness (Ra) was assessed with a surface profilometer. The microhardness was determined using a Vickers hardness test. The data were tabulated and analyzed. Results The smoothest surfaces were noticed with the control group (Mylar strips) in both composite materials tested. The PoGo one-step polishing system showed significantly better surface roughness compared with the Sof-Lex polishing system. The microhardness did not show any significant variations after finishing and polishing. Conclusion It can be concluded that the use of PoGo® onestep polishing system resulted in smoother surface with both composite materials studied compared with the Sof-Lex system. The finishing and polishing system had little influence on the surface microhardness. Clinical significance The finishing procedure and polishing system can affect the physical properties and performance of resin composites. How to cite this article Alfawaz Y. AbstractDespite composite resins capacity to mimic dental tissues, they can discolor over time. However, there is no information on the effect of prebrushing mouthwashes on the composite resin staining. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of prebrushing mouthwashes on the color stability of three composite resins. Twenty specimens of each resin were prepared: Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE –S Paul, MN, USA), Charisma (Heraeus Kulzer GmbH - Hanau - Germany) e EvoluX (Dentsply- Petrópolis - Brazil). Groups were randomly divided accord to the treatment: immersion in prebrushing mouthwash (test group) or immersion in deionized water (control group). Test groups were immersed in 10 ml of prebrushing mouthwash Plax Magic (Colgate-Palmolive, São Bernardo do Campo, SP, Brazil) for 60 s three times a day during 35 days following the manufacturer’s instructions. Color measurements were performed after 24 h of specimen’s preparation and after 7, 14, 21, and 35 days of immersion time. Results showed that prebrushing mouthwash Plax Magic promoted a color change in all the tested materials and evaluation time. The color change was greater in composite resin Charisma, followed by Z250 and EvoluX. Therefore, prebrushing mouthwash promoted a color change in all the materials used. Composite resin Charisma demonstrated less color stability than Filtek Z250 resin and EvoluX resin, which was the most stable. Keywords: Composite Resins. Oral Hygiene. Color. Higiene Oral. Cor.
