This study aimed to examine the influence of acculturation of Chinese Kungfu elements on Pencak Silat Betawi. The study used qualitative method and observation with interview and literature study by looking up Betawi and Pencak Silat on Batavia literature. Research finds out that the origins and influence of acculturation of Chinese Kungfu in Pencak Silat Betawi can be seen from a reciprocal relationship between the Chinese community and Betawi through the exchange of knowledge between Chinese martial arts champion and Betawi champion, or brought directly by Chinese Muslims as Master Ong and Kwee Tang Kiam. In addition, there are elements of acculturation both in naming or some movements adopted from Chinese kungfu as Chinese way in Maen Pukul Sabeni that uses two fingers (index and middle), the use of symbols that are closely related to Chinese culture symbols in the logo of Pencak Silat Sabeni, respect technique with Baoquan Li shape as in Mustika Kwitang, and so on.

Abstract Aside from metaphor being an important language device reflecting human cognition, it also provides a window into the understanding of culture (Kövecsec 2019). Language is a function of culture because it is a form of the verbal and nonverbal systems by which a group member can communicate with another member. Language bonds together people of the same cultural identity because it functions as a common bond between people who have the same linguistic heritage. As argued in Verhagen (2008), values of one’s understanding of the world he lives in may in turn be influenced by the conceptual metaphors he unconsciously holds to visualize his world. Verhagen has provided a valuable standpoint, yet it is western-centered and European-oriented. By investigating different Chinese metaphors in proverbs, food, marriage, and time expressions, this paper intends to address the following questions: Does conceptualization via metaphors reflect any specific Chinese mode of thinking? Does such conceptualization give a taste of Chinese culture? What kind(s) of theoretical and pragmatic implications can be derived from our line of investigation? It is thus hoped that this paper may provide empirical evidence with reference to mappings between thought and language, which in turn, may serve as a way to explore culture.

Abstract. The Islamic education, Islamic boarding schools and madrasas, have made a very significant contribution to the implementation of education and social reform. Through the teaching process, in which the kyai as the main figure and the use of the ‘yellow book’, traditional Islamic ideas colored the early days of growing awareness as a nation and a State. When the New Order government carried out the development and modernization of society, there was a revival of a Muslim group called the “new middle class santri”, which took place in line with the modernization that occurred in the traditional Islamic educational institutions of the pesantren. Then in the era of democratization, the world of Islamic education experienced growth and development in various religious institutions and styles. Most of the pesantren are still committed to maintaining a moderate religious style, recognized as the foundation for the development of civil society and the formation of a ‘distinctive’, friendly, moderate, and tolerant social-political identity of Indonesian society. The Muslim character is different from other regions, especially the Middle East which is the axis of the Islamic world. However, a small proportion of pesantren are thought to promote the growth of religious chauvinism, teach a ‘narrow’ interpretation of Islam and provide a framework of thought and action in responding to socio-political change which often takes the form of a ‘jihad’. This article tries to explore the contribution of Islamic education to social change in the Indonesian Muslim community. Abstark.
