Abstract. The Islamic education, Islamic boarding schools and madrasas, have made a very significant contribution to the implementation of education and social reform. Through the teaching process, in which the kyai as the main figure and the use of the ‘yellow book’, traditional Islamic ideas colored the early days of growing awareness as a nation and a State. When the New Order government carried out the development and modernization of society, there was a revival of a Muslim group called the “new middle class santri”, which took place in line with the modernization that occurred in the traditional Islamic educational institutions of the pesantren. Then in the era of democratization, the world of Islamic education experienced growth and development in various religious institutions and styles. Most of the pesantren are still committed to maintaining a moderate religious style, recognized as the foundation for the development of civil society and the formation of a ‘distinctive’, friendly, moderate, and tolerant social-political identity of Indonesian society. The Muslim character is different from other regions, especially the Middle East which is the axis of the Islamic world. However, a small proportion of pesantren are thought to promote the growth of religious chauvinism, teach a ‘narrow’ interpretation of Islam and provide a framework of thought and action in responding to socio-political change which often takes the form of a ‘jihad’. This article tries to explore the contribution of Islamic education to social change in the Indonesian Muslim community. Abstark.

The realignment of the Islamic education system is not just modification or patchwork. Still, it requires reconstruction, reconciliation, and reorientation so that Islamic education can make a significant contribution to the achievement of the take-off stage. In this paper, the author tries to offer several solutive arguments as well as to become a plan for Islamic education. First, it needs a review of the Islamic education system that is currently running while still promoting the spirit of Islamic teachings. The vision is manifest in the form of an attempt to re-dialogue religious texts against every reality that occurs. Second, prepare more mature and quality human resources armed with comprehensive capabilities. Third, reaffirming the role of all elements in education, namely, individuals, families, communities, educational institutions, and the state. Fourth, to unite Islamic spirituality with science and technology as a strong basis for increasingly pressing challenges, Islamic intellectual tradition, is a hierarchy and interconnection between various scientific disciplines that enable the realization of unity (oneness) in diversity, not just in the realm of faith and religious experience, but also in the world of knowledge.

Communication is an integral part of human life because our movements are always associated by communication. At this point, the communication is in terms of Islamic communication, i.e. communication of moral al-karimah or ethics. Communication of morality means the communication that comes from the Quran and hadith (sunnah of the Prophet). Islamic communication is a new form of phrase and thought emerged in academic research started from about three decades ago. The emergence of Islamic communication thoughts and activism is based on the failure of the philosophy, paradigm and implementation of western communication which further optimizes the pragmatic, materialistic and capitalist media values. This failure has negative implications especially on the Muslim community throughout the world due to the different religions, cultures and lifestyles of the (western) countries that are as the producers of the sciences. There are two kinds of communication consisting of: (1) direct communication (face to face) either between individual with individual, or individual with group, or group with group, group with society, hence influence the individual relation (interpersonal) included in understanding the communication; and (2) mass communication that is a process of communication made through the mass media with various purposes of communication and to convey information to a wide audience. The basics of communication principles must be mastered. By mastering the principles of communication in Islamic society, it can be able to organize Islamic education and Islamic communication to form a high-quality communication in the society, professionals, and noble character.

Before the establishment of the Islamic Kingdom of Langkat, the people there have embraced Islam. This is because Langkat is adjacent to Aceh, which had already been ruled by an Islamic empire and it broadcast Islam to various regions, including the east coast of Sumatra. The Kingdom of Langkat, especially after relocated its Capital  to Tanjung Pura, had made Islam as a main reference and political legitimacy of the Sultan and the Kingdom in general. As a consequence, Islam is practiced by the majority of Muslim community and reflected in various fields. At the beginning of the 20th century in East Sumatra there emerged publicly funded educational institutions, including those in Langkat. However, religious subjects are not officially acknowledged. Seeing this situation, the Sultan and other Muslims felt responsible for establishing an independent Islamic educational institution. Although Islamic education was preiously taught to Muslim children, but its implementation was largely limited in mosques or private homes. The Kingdom was destined to improve the quality of Islamic education through building an independent educational institution. Keywords: Education, Islamic Empire, Langkat, Sumatera, Indonesia Sebelum berdirinya kerajaan Langkat, masyarakat di sana telah memeluk agama Islam.
