In modern conditions the country faces the necessity to build a model of the new chasing modernization and, in this regard, the preceding experience of Russian modernizations and its analysis appears to be up-to-date. The economic program proposed by minister of finance S.Yu. Vitte was a model of country’s transformation to the industrial development and contributed to establishing a competitive Russia at the edge of centuries. The author for the first time performs a complex analysis of Vitte’s note “About changing the staff of the Department of trade and manufactures” prepared in the Ministry of Finance at the end of 1893. This was the document, which remained in history as “Vitte’s program”. During the implementation of this Program real success was achieved, including creating modern transport communications, powerful industrial complex, which included mining and processing industries, establishing the system of professional education, which really increased the quality of human capital and made the county’s economy competitive in the world. The author makes a conclusion that Russian economy was developing in the framework of the suggested Program even after Vitte’s resignation. However, mostly due to political limitations, the goals stated in the Program were not fully achieved. Nevertheless, Vitte’s period in Russian history was the period of expedited growth and overcoming “backwardness”, which placed the country among the world leading countries in the early 20th century.

This article is devoted to a comprehensive study of the structural and semantic features of dish names and their descriptions in German in the field of restaurant discourse. The study employs cognitive discourse analysis, elements of comparative and contextological approaches, taking into account linguocultural parameters. The relevance of the comprehensive study of the names of dishes in restaurant discourse is due to an increased interest in the parameterization of lexical units in different types of institutional discourse. The scientific novelty of this work lies in the fact that for the first time, within the framework of a restaurant menu, not only the nomination of a dish is considered, but also the structural and semantic characteristics of its description are analysed. An attempt is made to analyse a connection between the nominations of dishes and their description in the restaurant menu, as well as to determine the semantic dominants of the genre under study. It is concluded that the text of the menu as a whole presents a combination of the language for special purposes and the language of advertising. In interaction with extralinguistic factors, the nominations of dishes and their descriptions not only document the culture of food in society, but also reflect the ethnocultural picture of the world. Based on the analysis of the menu texts, it is established that structurally the names of dishes are complex words or phrases, built mainly according to the attributive model. The description of dishes performs the function of verbalizing the sensations of taste and clarifying the method of preparing dishes, characterizing the quality of dishes, their ingredients, and the intensity of taste. Evaluative parameters in descriptions are expressed at the lexical, grammatical, syntactic and stylistic levels.

The article explores the interrelation between the main factors of national economy competitiveness on the basis of logical and correlation analysis of the data on 144 countries presented in The Global Competitiveness Report issued by the World Economic Forum. The analysis of the strength and nature of the relations between the factors gives grounds to assume that institutions, infrastructure, higher education and training are core problems; goods market efficiency, technological readiness are key problems; business sophistication and innovation are resulting problems. The analysis shows that the competitiveness indicators of other BRICS countries which are better than Russian ones, are achieved not due to any remarkable progress in economic policy, but owing to the lack of serious failures typical for Russian economy. For instance, the high level of Russian infrastructure, macroeconomic stability, sizes of home market and some other indicators come to nothing because of extremely low level of Russian institutions, market efficiency, financial market, and business sophistication. As a result, other BRICS countries' progress, which is not so remarkable itself, gives much better cumulative result in comparison with Russian breakthrough, which cannot be accomplished in the environment that is unfavorable for it. With the view of Russian economy competitiveness and innovation upgrade, firstly, it is essential to increase the quality of Russian institutions (the necessity of reforms is indubitable: Russia occupies the 133d place in the world in accordance with the quality of its institutions), to improve the infrastructure, higher education and training. The advancement in solving these problems will facilitate the situation or solve the large part of the problems of goods market efficiency and improve the existing technological readiness. The increasing of the goods market quality and the improvement of technological readiness will, in their turn, upgrade business sophistication and innovations. The proposed approach gives ground to claim that the reforms need to be made in the sequence described above. The upgrade of Russian companies’ business sophistication and their innovation will be to a great extent the result of the solution of the mentioned problems.

Late in 1945, officials in the U.S. government were pondering the lessons of the recently concluded wars with Germany and Japan. It is no surprise that the principal concern of policymakers was to prevent circumstances arising that would again imperil the nation and its ever-increasing interests abroad. From the Allied perspective, preventing the resurgence of German and Japanese imperialism required a prolonged military occupation. Together with a view toward deterring other military threats to U.S. power, the consequence was the building-up of a vast peacetime military apparatus, what President Eisenhower termed a “military-industrial complex,” for the first time in U.S. history. At this same time, the Librarian of Congress, Luther Harris Evans, argued that American security and hegemony demanded another kind of national commitment as well, to the acquisition and assembling of data throughout the world. In his words:

The Spalding Gentlemen's Society is one of the oldest extant learned societies in the world. At the time of its foundation over 300 years ago such societies were popular and membership was viewed as an important attribute of middle-class life. Most societies were short-lived and extant references to them are rare. What sets Spalding over all others is not only its longevity but also the quality of its records, which contain numerous references to music. This article aims to present the musical activities of the Society and to put them into the context of the early eighteenth-century English and European musical world. It begins with a discussion of the annual anniversary concerts and a detailed study of the 1738–46 programmes, commenting on the music performed and those who took part; these programmes are given as appendices. This research is further augmented by an examination of the music-related matters discussed at their meetings and other events that took place in Spalding. It may be impossible to ascertain how unique the Society's musical activities were, but it is rare to have such detail, and this is the first time that these important records, at least in relation to music, have been discussed in any depth.

In this paper, I explore C.S. Lewis’s legacy as apologist and artist of the Christian faith and claim that Lewis, like his mentor George MacDonald before him and his friend Dorothy L. Sayers, successfully engaged contemporary culture by speaking the wildly attractive language of Joy. Both as rational defender of the Christian faith and as an imaginative storyteller, Lewis conveyed this quality of Heavenly Joy that invites and inspires the hearts and minds of readers to rethink, reconsider, and perhaps for the first time in their lives experience Beauty and Love—to truly encounter what proves to be the lasting Hope of the world. In this I point to three characteristics that resulted in Lewis’s success as a Christian apologist: 1) the recovery of earlier ideas; 2) the use of everyday language; and 3) the habit of humility. Then I speak of how in his imaginative fiction this language of Joy sees Beauty and both testify to Love—and it is these literary experiences that move the hearts and minds of readers.

The Internet offers an unprecedented opportunity for healthcare information to be disseminated instantaneously. Quality of information, both scientific and nonscientific, and the development of tools to disseminate information securely via the Internet are the two most important issues related to achieving effective and wider exchange of health information. For the first time ever, information can be exchanged simultaneously and interactively all around the world, with the potential of being equally available to healthcare professionals as well as to patients. The big difference between yesterday's knowledge-based patient care and that of tomorrow, is a fundamental premise that patients will explore the web world with a desire to learn more about their condition, including its treatment and prognosis. This has evolved into the concept of e-health (Electronic Health). Evaluation and examination of the information being conveyed via the Internet is important and necessary in order for the Internet to be an effective tool in healthcare.

The article considers the main directions of using the potential of economic growth in Russia to increase the pace and quality of growth, as well as improve the quality of life. It is noted that the inertial economic dynamics does not ensure the goals of the development of the Russian economy and maintaining its competitiveness in the world. It is stated that the greatest growth potential remains in the part of the population's demand, whose contribution to economic dynamics is limited due to income gaps and inefficient consumption structure. It is assumed that the greatest results can be achieved by combining social policy measures and stimulating private investment.

The article for the first time gives an analysis of the work of the world famous, but little studied in Russia, Old Believer icon painter and restorer icons Pimen Maksimovich Sofronov in the third, American period. The author systematizes scattered information about his artistic activities in the United States, makes a chronology of the creation of his works during this period, and makes an analysis of them. The description of the temples where P.M. Sofronov worked, and the painting of their interiors, is given for the first time in scientific literature. Analyzing the biographical data and the work of the icon painter in the third, American period, which turned out to be the longest, the author of the article concludes that at this time the quality of the master's work is changing. Since, in Europe, P.M. Sofronov gained the experience of wall painting of churches, now, in North America, he was able to fully realize this side of his talent by making the transition from easel icon painting to monumental painting. Now the researcher's attention has been given to extensive temple complexes, often consisting of both stenographs and iconostases, which have their own specific program. The author interprets the canon in accordance with the architectural space that is provided to him for painting. Each time it is a new theological and artistic task. Having completed such major works as paintings of the interiors of Trinity Cathedral in Brooklyn, the Church of the Three Saints in Ansonia, the Church of Peter and Paul in Syracuse, the Vladimir Church in Trenton, St. Trinity in Weinland, the artist made a significant contribution to the church art of Russian emigration.
