The article deals with the problem of precedent phenomena use for realization of the attractiveness effect. The role of traditional and innovative precedent phenomena (memes) in polycode internet media-text aimed at attracting attention of the audience to educational sites is under analysis. The material of the research is the content of Russian universities' educational sites and their official pages in VKontakte. The method of discourse analysis of polycode internet media-text and the standard structural-and-semantic and functional-and-semantic method of transformed precedent text analysis are applied in the work. The findings are that creators use various models of semantic, lexical-and-semantic, structural and syntactic transformation of basic traditional precedent phenomena in polycode internet media texts including ironic reinterpretation, amphiboly and "literalization of initial content". Internet-memes as instruments of attractiveness effect use some other semiotic mechanisms for attraction of the audience attention such as illogisms and visual blendings as well as different types of intertextual interaction. The author comes to a conclusion that precedent phenomena are of great perlocutive potential which allows to correlate basic cultural information in an initial precedent phenomenon with an actual one, meant by creator sense in transformed component. The results can be applied in optimization of the university site content.

This study made explicit the discourses of 10 teachers working as university-based teacher educators in Singapore to understand their enacted identities. It framed identity as discursive, constructed through language and talk. Interview data were analyzed using descriptive discourse analysis tools, with critical discourse analysis influencing the process. The discourses are as follows: (a) The value of seconded teachers is located firmly within schools, with practice and practitioner elevated above theory and academics; (b) teaching is the core role of seconded teachers, and discourses about learning, development, and research are weak; and (c) an individualistic framing situates the locus of change on teacher-practitioners. Hybrid spaces that bring theory and practice together are discursive spaces. Both the strengths and limitations of existing discursive identities need to be acknowledged, and multifaceted and complex practitioner identities explored. This article contributes to the integration of practitioners into the wider community of teacher educators in the university.

The article focuses on the usage of idioms for characterizing the image of Russia in the English language media discourse. To understand the meaning of the phraseological unit one should apply the method of discourse analysis. The discourse analysis of the mediatext takes into account extra-linguistic, linguistic and cognitive factors. Extra-linguistic factors include political situation, current events, and ideology of a state and media outlet. Linguistic analysis provides for the investigation of the semantics of the idiom and its connotative potential. Cognitive analysis shows the intentions of the author to create either positive or negative opinion of events described. Connotative meaning is determined by means of linguocognitive analysis considering extra-linguistic factors. The semantics of the idiom contains subjective modalities (axiological, emotive and deontic) representing different assessments of the reality. Modality can be identified with cognitive-modal operators specifying different types of evaluation: rational, emotional, normative. The analysis of the semantic structure of phraseological units is conducted in our research. It is aimed at characterizing the role of Russia in the global world by means of idioms. The discourse approach enables to determine the connotative potential of phraseological units and to describe the image of our country in the English language mass media.

The article is devoted to a statistical analysis of quantitative and qualitative parameters characterizing the professoriate of Russian universities in 1755–1884. The material for such a study was drawn from the prosopographic database compiled on the basis of biographical data on professors and containing more than 1200 names of scientists. The following characteristics have been examined: the social composition; the dynamics of the replenishment of the professor corps; the distribution of professors by different universities and by branches of science; the average age of embarking on the professorial position; the length of the professorial service; the role of “junior” university positions and the importance of the period of teaching as Privatdozent before becoming a professor; the proportion of those who were graduates of the universities where they later taught, etc. These characteristics have been studied in chronological dynamics, depending on the main stages of replenishment of the professoriate, which coincided with the major university reforms in the 19th century. The similarity between some parameters for the entire professorial corps (for example, the average age of receiving professorship) and the evolution of parameters in different periods and differences between universities has been identified. Some phenomena of university life, known in historiography in a number of examples, have received a detailed explanation in the light of statistical analysis. At the same time, the study has demonstrated the potential of quantitative methods in revealing new properties of Russian university professors that cannot be found only through the analysis of narrative sources.

The paper reveals a new dimension of implementing the third mission of a university - through the activities rolled-out by Russian universities in their botanic gardens. For urban residents, botanic gardens, in addition to their main functions, are gradually becoming a place for integrating different population groups, from schoolchildren to pensioners. These public spaces conduct active educational policies aimed at many segments of a broader university community, taking into account the experience of regional environmental organizations and international Associations of Botanic Gardens. The author argues that the ecological vector is a priority for productive communication of a university with regional and global audiences at the site of its Botanic Garden, which becomes a measure of the university entering upon the way of sustainable development

Artiklen skildrer historien om Dansk Sociologi fra etableringen i 1989-1990 til jubilæumsåret 2014. Initiativet blev taget af Dansk Sociologforening under den institutionelle krise i faget, der kulminerede da undervisningsminister Bertel Haarder besluttede at lukke uddannelsen. Tidsskriftet har været benyttet som publiceringskanal af en meget stor andel af danske sociologer og oplagstal har været stigende frem til omkring 2006. De seneste 10-15 år har man kunnet se et skift i indholdsprofilen, fra en dominans af teoretisk orienterede emner over mod en bred vifte af empiriske emner og en tilpasning til en mainstream akademisk, upersonlig form. Dansk Sociologi er et udpræget pluralistisk tidsskrift og kontroverser mellem forskellige teoretiske retninger eller om specifikke spørgsmål har man ikke set. Artiklen drøfter også fremtidige udfordringer som især er internationalisering, de nye digitale medier og krav om open access. Dissemination of Knowledge and Inspiration for 25 years This article describes and evaluates the journal Dansk Sociologi (Danish Sociology) from its inception in 1989-1990 until its 25th anniversary in 2014. The Danish Sociological Association took the initiative to set up the journal during sociology’s institutional crisis due to fact that the Minister of Education had decided to close the sociology department at the University of Copenhagen, the only place in Denmark with the discipline. The article discusses the evolution of the journal’s organizational framework, its authors, editors, and content. The journal has been used as a vehicle for publication by a large proportion of Danish sociologists. Subscriptions have been growing until 2006. There has been a shift from theoretical articles to a wider range of empirical ones, and from a more discussion-based form to a more detached and standardized academic one. There has been considerable pluralism, and there have been no major controversies. The challenges that the journal must address are an internationalization pressure that could weaken authors’ incentives to write for a Danish journal, the transition to internet media, and finally requirements for open access that could threaten the journal’s economy. This paper discusses the role of cultural specific text elements in the constitution of the meaning of the text and focuses the problems which these elements can cause in the translation process. It is based on a description of the translation process as symbiosis of the three categories language, text and culture in a specific situation. The described comprehension of translation turns the question of the methodology of the cultural transfer into a key question that consequently has an impact on the praxis and didactics of translation. The meaning of a text is the result of a complex interaction of different systems in which different types of knowledge are activated. The central question is how culture manifests itself within texts and how these manifestations can be reconstructed, i.e. how the translator's decisions can be made transparent in the context of the transfer. Firstly there is a theoretical reflection on the interdependence of the three categories language, culture and text in which the underlying semiotic conception of text and culture is outlined. On this basis a pragma-semiotic model of the constitution of the text as a complex sign is presented, and a methodology for an integrative text analysis is deduced from this theoretical conception of text constitution. The different forms of cultural specific elements are analyzed and categorized, whereas in addition to the traditional manifestations the concept of intertextuality is introduced and discussed as an important fact for the pragmatic and cultural coherence of the text. The defined forms of cultural specific text elements are illustrated by a number of examples taken from translation praxis and classroom. All the examples are translations from Spanish into German. Finally, the practical and didactical implications, which are of great importance for the training of further translators, are discussed.

The age of discovery is one of the most important periods in human history whose effects continue to be seen. In this period, the world was traveled by European sailors, new continents were discovered, and the discovered resources, work, and labor power flowed to Europe. All these developments have led to changes in the perception of the East in the West. Orientalism, defined as the manifestation of the West on the East, has found a place in art, literature, all kinds of written or printed media, especially cinema. The purpose of the study is to examine the domination structures starting with colonialism in the context of orientalism through the narratives of cinema in light of information. The narrative of 12 Years a Slave (2013) was examined using the discourse analysis method which is one of the qualitative text analysis. As a result, it was seen that the dialogues, images, character depictions, and the language used played an important role in the presentation of the othering; the white man was in the role of savior/god/good, and this situation was also supported by metaphors.

Background: Smoking amongst women is increasing in the developing countries like India. There is paucity of data on the knowledge, attitude and practices of smoking amongst females in India. Hence a study was planned to assess the same.Methods: It was a qualitative research using descriptive questionnaire, prepared using the basic protocols available as per WHO Global Adult Tobacco Survey, conducted by self-reporting, from February to March, 2018 in the University Institute of Applied Management Sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh. It was administered to 111 females aged 18 to 35 years, residing in Chandigarh.Results: Total22.5% of the female respondents were current smokers. Majority of them belonged to the age group of 26-35years; were either employed or were studying and felt that females resorted to smoking for gaining pleasure and relieving stress. Most of them were aware of passive smoking. Majority felt that people who smoke should quit for their own health and for their families and street plays, public awareness camps, television and cinema halls are important mediums for helping to quit. Will power be found to be most important to help smokers quit. Some quoted the role of nicotine replacement therapy, exercise, individual counseling etc also. Majority of the females started smoking early, at an age of 16-25years, consuming 1-10cigarettes per day and had been smoking since more than a year when interviewed. Smoking was primarily introduced by peers. All the smokers were aware of different types of smoking hazards, most commonly reported as cancer and asthma. 16/25 smokers wanted to quit and 14/16 had tried in the past but were unsuccessful.Conclusions: This study gives an indication of rising smoking trend in females. Smoking cessation measures need to be made more gender-sensitive, targeting females in their early ages.

The article addresses the issue of preliminary translation as part of the translation process. Though the review of scientific discussion in the area shows substantial research of text analysis, its application in teaching practice still remains unclear. Particularly, it concerns the format and effectiveness of different methods. The article describes an integrated model of text analysis, which is based on textological and intercultural approaches and uses different tools for analyzing the text. The model is tested in the practice of teaching translation at the university by the use of questionnaires, a protocol method, and a comparative method. The study of the results proves the efficiency and flexibility of the model in reference to different types of texts. It can be used for different levels of translation training. The application of the integrated text analysis provides a better understanding of the text contents and better equivalency. It also diminishes mistakes in translation. The model of integrated text analysis is a useful tool for educators in linguistic area.

This article focuses on the global phenomenon of the marketization of higher education and how it has shaped the discourses of China’s top universities. By analyzing the university presidents’ messages published in the websites of 36 top-ranked universities in China, the aim is to ascertain the extent to which this institutionalized genre imbricates a marketizing role with other ideological imperatives. Informed by the theoretical principles of Critical Discourse Analysis and adopting a genre analysis methodological approach, we first examined the macro-level rhetorical structure followed by a micro-level analysis of the discursive strategies used in the presidents’ messages. The findings reveal a dynamic interweaving of three distinct discursive strands – bureaucratic, conversational and advertising – constructed in and around the move structure of the presidents’ messages. This interdiscursive analysis reveals competing imperatives and contestations that reflect the dual role of the presidents’ messages to project a globalized, international outlook while maintaining an allegiance to political ideologies and national interests that top-ranked universities in China have to simultaneously negotiate.
