Abstract Objective: To investigate the correlations among the extent of bone involvement, splenic volume, and quality of life in patients with Gaucher disease. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive, prospective cross-sectional study of 18 patients with Gaucher disease who underwent 3-T magnetic resonance imaging of both femurs and the lumbar spine. Semiquantitative analyses were performed on the basis of the bone marrow burden (BMB) score. We looked for linear relationships among the variables splenic volume, quality of life score, and BMB score. Results: We identified a linear relationship between the BMB scores and splenic volume. The quality of life score showed no statistically significant relationship with splenic volume or the BMB score. Conclusion: The linear relationship between the BMB score and the splenic volume indicates that the extent of bone disease is greater in individuals with splenomegaly. No correlation was found between the BMB and quality of life scores, illustrating the insidious and silent progression of Gaucher disease.

Background Epilepsy is thought to be caused by witchcraft, evil spirit, and God’s punishment for sins in many developing countries. As a result, people with epilepsy and their families usually suffer from stigma, discrimination, depression, and other psychiatric problems. Thus, this study aimed to assess the quality of life and its associated factors among epileptic patients attending public hospitals in North Wollo Zone, Northeast Ethiopia. Methods An institution-based cross-sectional study design was employed in this study. A simple random sampling technique was utilized. Health-related quality of life was measured based on the total score of the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory (QOLIE-31) instrument. Data were entered into Epi-data 3.1 statistical package and exported to SPSS Version 20 for further analysis. Linear regression models were used to assess the relationship between quality of life and the independent variables. Statistically significant values were declared at a P-value of < 0.05. Results A total of 395 patients participated in the study making the response rate 98.5%. The mean age of the participants was 32.39 ±10.71 years. More than half, 199 (50.4%) of epileptic patients had an overall weighted average health related quality of life score of mean and above. Male sex (B = 4.34, 95%CI, 0.41, 8.27, P = 0.03), higher educational status (B = 7.18, 95%CI, 1.39, 13.00, P = 0.015) and age at onset of epilepsy (B = 0.237, 95%CI, 0.02, 0.45, P = 0.035) were associated with increased health related quality of life score. On the other hand, family history of epilepsy (B = -4.78, 95%CI,-9.24,-0.33, P = 0.035), uncontrolled seizure (B = -11.08, 95%CI,-15.11,-7.05, P < 0.001), more than 5 pre-treatment number of seizures (B = -4.86, 95%CI,-8.91,-0.81, P = 0.019), poor drug adherence (B = -11.65, 95%CI,-16.06,-7.23, P < 0.001), having moderate (B = -4.526, 95%CI,-8.59,-0.46, P = 0.029) to sever (B = -12.84, 95%CI,-18.30,-7.37, P < 0.001) anxiety and depression, believing that epilepsy is caused by evil spirit (B = -7.04, 95%CI,-11.46,-2.61, P = 0.002), drinking alcohol (B = -5.42, 95%CI,-10.72,-0.13, P = 0.045), and having other co-morbidities (B = -9.35, 95%CI,-14.35,-4.36, P < 0.001) were significantly negatively associated with the health related quality of life score among epileptic patients. Conclusions Only around half of the epileptic patients have a good health-related quality of life. In addition, multiple variables including family history, uncontrolled seizure, and poor drug adherence were associated with quality of life among epileptic patients. Hence, targeting these variables in epilepsy management is recommended.

Background: People with asthma believe their condition prevents them from undertaking physical activity. The objective was to determine the association between habitual physical activity levels and the quality of life in adults with asthma and meeting the physical activity guidelines. Material/Methods: A cross-sectional survey of adults (aged >18) with asthma was conducted in three general practices in Nottingham, UK (n = 128). A self-reported short form International Physical Activity Questionnaire, mini Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire and a demographic questionnaire (age, gender, ethnicity and BMI) were used to collect data. Physical activity was provided in minutes for different activities to enable the habitual weekly MET-minutes to be calculated, and the quality of life score was determined. Results: Among 128 respondents, 22% met the physical activity guidelines. Mostly younger, white, male, normal weight participants had higher physical activity levels and better asthma quality of life. Mean total asthma quality of life score was 4.5. Linear regression modelling showed a positive association between the total physical activity and the quality of life score (p < 0.001); thus higher physical activity levels were associated with less/no asthma quality of life impairment (higher score). Conclusions: The majority of asthmatics in this study had low physical activity levels, did not meet the recommended physical activity guidelines and had impaired quality of life. A strong positive association between physical activity and asthma quality of life supports the view that adults with asthma should be encouraged to be sufficiently physically active, which could be associated with a better asthma related quality of life.

This study was undertaken to investigate idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and symptoms in a real-life cross-sectional study. Our secondary aim was to create a simple identification method for patients with increased need for palliative care by studying the relationship between modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnoea scale, HRQoL and symptoms. We sent a self-rating HRQoL questionnaire (RAND-36) and modified Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) to 300 IPF patients; 84% of the patients responded to these questionnaires. The most prevalent (>80%) symptoms were tiredness, breathlessness, cough and pain in movement. An increasing mMRC score showed a linear relationship (p<0.001) to impaired HRQoL in all dimensions of RAND-36 and the severity of all symptoms in ESAS. Dimensions of RAND-36 fell below general population reference values in patients with mMRC score ≥2. The intensity of pain in movement (p<0.001) and at rest (p=0.041), and the prevalence of chest pain (p<0.001) had a positive linear relationship to increased mMRC score. An increasing mMRC score reflects impaired HRQoL and a high symptom burden. In clinical practice, the mMRC scale could be used for screening and identification of IPF patients with increased need for palliative care.

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy and the leading cause of death among women worldwide. The incidence of breast cancer is on the rise in developing countries. Breast cancer patients not only experience physical pain from treatment but may also face mental crises, impaired social function, and impaired quality of life. However, there are not many studies on the quality of life (QoL) of post - treatment breast cancer patients. Therefore, we carried out the study “assessment the quality of life of breast cancer patients after one year of treatment” with aims to evaluate the quality of life of breast cancer patients after one year of treatment using the scales EQ-5D-5L and QLQ-BR23 and to find out related factors to the quality of life of these subjects. Methods: A cross - sectional study was conducted on 100 breast cancer patients after one year of treatment at the Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital to examine the quality of life using the scales EQ-5D-5L and QLQ-BR23 and to detect the associated factors. Results: The mean quality of life score of breast cancer patients after one year of treatment on the EQ- 5D-5L scale was 0.6436 ± 0.2098. By QLQ-BR23, the quality of life score on function was 74.75 ± 20.78 while the score on symptoms was 28.80 ± 12.79. The quality of life from both scales was found to be statistically significant related to social work participation, self - reported health, risk of depression, anxiety, and stress. Conclusions: The quality of life of breast cancer patients in the study was at a moderate level. This suggests more supports to be done continuously after long - term post - diagnosing especially psychological and social aspects for these subjects.

Background <br />Flatfoot is a musculoskeletal abnormality commonly found in children that could result in a reduction of quality of life because of its related symptoms and functional abnormalities. This study aimed to determine the association between flatfoot and the quality of life among children 5-18 years of age. <br /><br />Methods <br />A cross sectional design was used in this study of children aged 5-18 years. The diagnosis of flatfoot was made in accordance with the Chippaux-Smirak Index classification, whereas general and domain-specific quality of life were measured using the Indonesian version of PedsQL™ that has been previously validated. Mann Whitney test was used to compare quality of life between children with flatfoot and normal feet, along with other variables that potentially may influence a child’s quality of life. <br /><br />Results <br />A total of 79 out of 120 subjects was used to analyze the data. There was a statistically significant difference in the quality of life score in the school functioning domain between children with flatfoot (64.46 ±18.22) and those with normal feet (75.90 ±17.29) in children &lt;11 years of age (p=0.029). Apart from this, the study did not find any statistically significant differences in the total quality of life score or in other quality of life domains between the two groups. <br /><br />Conclusions <br />Flatfoot significantly decreases children’s quality of life in the school functioning domain. Early detection and correction of flatfoot may be necessary to improve the educational attainment of children suffering from this condition.
