ABSTRACT Introduction: Low levels of daily physical activity is considered to be one of the causes of the exorbitant increase in overweight and obese children, and associated comorbidities. Therefore, it is vital to develop strategies that will be implemented consistently, to improve this situation. Studies have used dance as a resource for training overweight and obese children, but the lack of information about the creation process and its respective stages reduce the possibility of these proposals being effectively applied. Objectives: To describe the steps in the creation of a dance protocol as a training resource, and its effectiveness in improving the health parameters of overweight and obese children. Methods: 30 children (9 ± 1.1 years) underwent training sessions consisting of a five-minute warm-up at 60% HRmax., and four 10-minute sessions at 70% to 80% at HRmax. interspersed with five 2-minute active recovery periods at 60% HRmax. The sessions were carried out three times a week, and lasted 60 minutes each, over a 13-week period. Before and after the training, the body composition, body mass index (BMI), BMI z-score, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure and blood variables were measured. Statistical analysis was performed using a mixed effects regression model. Results: After training with Afro-Brazilian dance, there was a significant reduction (p<0.05) in the BMI z-score and waist-to-height ratio. Conclusion: Afro-Brazilian dance training was a strategy with a positive effect on BMI z-score and waist-to-height ratio in overweight and obese children. Level of evidence IV; Case series.

Background: The nexus between appetitive traits, dietary patterns and weight status has predominantly been studied in a mixed sample (healthy weight, overweight and obese sample). Aim: This cross-sectional study examined associations between overweight/obese children’s appetitive traits, dietary patterns and weight status. Methods: We studied children ( N = 58, body mass index z-score: 2.25±0.46), 4–12 years attending the School Kids Intervention Program. Children’s appetitive traits and dietary patterns were measured with the Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire and Children’s Dietary Questionnaire, respectively. Children’s height and weight were used to compute body mass index z-score; waist circumference was also measured and waist-to-height ratio was calculated. Results: After controlling for children’s age and gender, hierarchical linear regression analyses showed that lower scores for slowness in eating were associated with higher body mass index z-scores in children (β = −0.31, p = 0.01). Higher scores for emotional overeating were associated with higher waist-to-height ratio in children (β = 0.48, p = 0.01). Higher scores for fussiness were correlated with lower scores for fruits and vegetables (β = −0.59, p < 0.001) and higher scores for non-core foods (β = 0.26, p = 0.04). Conclusion: Results observed in the current sample of overweight and obese children are consistent with previous studies examining healthy-weight children. Slowness in eating may foster an obesity ‘protective’ effect, whereas emotional overeating may promote susceptibility to weight gain. Fussy eating may impair diet quality by lower consumption of vegetables and fruits and higher intake of non-core foods. This evidence will support dietitians to consider children’s appetitive traits when providing dietary consultation to support obesity management among overweight/obese children.

Background: Now a days unhealthy lifestyle primarily responsible for the dramatic increase obesity among children and adolescents. Objective: The purpose of the study is to see the effects of a multidisciplinary lifestyle intervention to reduce obese children and adolescents. The main outcome was cardiometabolic risk based on the waist-to-height ratio (WHTR) measurement. Secondary outcomes were (1) changes in body composition; (2) adherence to a Mediterranean diet; and (3) physical performance. Methods: The study involved 64 overweight/obese children or adolescents conducted at Dhaka Shishu Hospital from October 2017 to September 2018. The intervention was multidisciplinary including nutrition, exercise, and psychological aspects based on a family-based approach; it was delivered for six months for children and three months for adolescents. Before and after the intervention, several anthropometric measures height, body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and body composition, cardiometabolic risk index waist-to-height ratio (WHTR), and dietary habits of the participants and their families were evaluated. In addition, a set of functional motor fitness tests was performed to evaluate physical performance measures. Results: After the intervention both children and adolescents showed a significant reduction in body weight, BMI, waist circumference, fat mass, and WHTR index and an improvement of fat-free mass, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and physical fitness performance. Conclusion: A short term family-based multidisciplinary approach is effective in ameliorating the health status, dietary habits, and physical performance in children and adolescents. Introduction: Obesity is caused by imbalance amount of energy intake and energy requirement of the body. Obesity in children has high risk to become obesity in adult and results in degenerative diseases. In obese children have higher of getting insulin  resistance. This study was aimed to determine insulin resistance in obesity children aged 9-12 years in Semarang.Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design with two groups: height below the median-obesity circumference (TBBM-obesity) and height above the median-obesity (TBAM-obesity). Screening was done in 602 children aged 9-12 years in urban and suburban areas of Semarang. Nutritional status was determined with measurements of z-scores of height-for-age (HAZ) and waist circumference. To define insulin resistance were measured using homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Data were then analyzed by Mann-Whitney test and Spearman test.Results: There was found 75% subjects with high HOMA-IR value. HOMA-IR value in TBAM-obesity was 42.5% higher than TBBM-obesity was 32.5% (p= 0,088). Waist circumference and Waist to Height Ratio(WHtR) has a correlation on the increased HOMA-IR value (r= 0.662 p=0.000 and  r= 0.333 p=0.036) and height does not has a correlation on the increased HOMA-IR value (r=0.235; p= 0.144). Conclusion: Insulin resistance from all subject were found 75%. Waist circumference and Waist to Height Ratio(WHtR) has a correlation on the increased HOMA-IR value and height does not has a correlation on the increased HOMA-IR value.

Objectives: to analyze the blood pressure (BP) values ​​and responses to the Cold Pressor Test (CPT) according to the body mass index (BMI) and the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). Methods: 166 adolescents of both sexes participated in the study. Participants underwent measurements of body mass, height and waist circumference. BMI and WHtR were calculated. BP was measured before (pre-test), during (test) and after CPT (recovery). The groups were compared using a mixed ANOVA with Bonferroni post hoc, and Odds Ratio calculation. The level of significance was p < 0.05. Results: prevalences of 16.9% of high BMI, 19.9% ​​of increased WHR and 8.4% of pretest BP were found above the recommended. Participants with high BMI had increased systolic BP compared to their normal peers (113.0 ± 11.4 vs. 121.7 ± 11.6 mmHg; p = 0.003). Adolescents with elevated WHR had higher pre-test and recovery systolic BP (pre-test: 113.2 ± 11.4 vs. 119.6 ± 12.7 mmHg; p = 0.021; recovery: 111.9 ± 14.1 vs. 117.4 ± 14.0 mmHg; p = 0.044). Finally, individuals with BMI and WHtR above the recommended had 2.1 (95% CI 0.62 - 7.36) and 2.5 (95% CI 0.77 - 7.91) times, respectively, more likely to have high pre-test BP values. Conclusion: adolescents with increased BMI and WHtR have higher BP values ​​compared to their normal peers.

Background: Müller-Weiss disease (MWD) remains a controversial painful foot condition without consensus on its pathogenesis or a gold standard treatment modality. The aim of the study was to evaluate the outcomes of calcaneal lengthening in adolescent patients with symptomatic MWD with flatfoot. Methods: The study included 13 feet of 7 patients including 5 females and 2 males who were treated from March 2012 until June 2015 by calcaneal lengthening. The mean age was 15.6 years. The mean duration of symptoms was 13.5 months. The body mass index (BMI) averaged 28.9 kg/m2 at presentation. The patients were followed up for a mean of 37.8 months. Results: The osteotomy healed in all cases after a mean of 7.2 weeks. The second foot was operated on after an average of 11.5 months. The mean talometatarsal-1 angle improved from 39.8 degrees preoperatively to 5.9 degrees. The mean preoperative calcaneal pitch angle of 7.5 degrees increased to an average of 17.8 degrees postoperatively. The mean American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) Ankle-Hindfoot Score was improved from 61.9 preoperatively to 94.2 postoperatively. Four patients had occasional exertional pain. Four feet had mild residual forefoot abduction. Arthrodesis was not needed in any case by the last follow-up. Conclusion: Early diagnosis of MWD with flatfoot was important and allowed for nonfusion treatment options. Calcaneal lengthening osteotomy in selected MWD cases achieved satisfactory outcomes with pain control, deformity correction, and improvement of the functional results. Level of Evidence: Level IV, retrospective case series.

This study aimed to assess the performance of waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) in the prediction of metabolic syndrome and to determine the appropriate cutoff value in Thai adolescents. Demographic data, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, and lipid profile were obtained from the Thai National Health Examination Survey V database. The performances of WHtR, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), and BMI z-score were analyzed by the receiver operating characteristics. Among 2644 adolescents, metabolic syndrome was identified in 4.27%. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of WHtR, waist circumference, BMI, and BMI z-score were comparable (0.924-0.960). Performance of WHtR was more constant across age groups compared with other parameters. Using the cutoff value of WHtR at 0.5 resulted in the sensitivity and specificity of 98.5%/83.4% and 88.9%/86.0% in males and females, respectively. In conclusion, the cutoff value of WHtR at 0.5 provided good sensitivity and specificity for identifying metabolic syndrome in both genders. However, the other clinical risk factors or more definite scores should be considered when further assessment.

AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate the association between waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and specific biomarkers of inflammation, CVD risk and endothelial dysfunction in prepubertal obese children.DesignProspective, multicentre case–control study matched by age and sex.SettingChildren were recruited between May 2007 and May 2010 from primary-care centres and schools in three cities in Spain (Cordoba, Santiago de Compostela and Zaragoza).SubjectsFour hundred and forty-six (223 normal weight and 223 obese) Caucasian prepubertal children aged 6–12 years.ResultsWHtR was higher in the obese than in the normal-weight children. Blood pressure, waist circumference, weight, height, insulin, plasma lipids, leptin, resistin, abnormal neutrophil and monocyte counts, C-reactive protein, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, myeloperoxidase, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1, selectin and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 levels were higher in the obese than in the normal-weight group. Adiponectin and HDL-cholesterol were lower and glucose and metalloproteinase-9 showed no differences. Resistin, TNF-α and active plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 were associated with WHtR, a sensitive indicator of central obesity.ConclusionsOur results lead to the hypothesis that changes in biomarker levels of insulin resistance, inflammation and CVD risk before puberty might induce metabolic consequences of obesity in obese children before reaching adulthood.

Obesity is a global epidemic. Obesity related comorbidities include hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, obstructive sleep apnea, and sudden death. Abdominal adiposity has been blamed for causing cardiovascular complications. The body roundness index (BRI) has been considered to be a superior anthropometric measure for abdominal adiposity. The aim of the study was to find the relationship of blood pressure in healthy individuals to BRI, waist circumference (WC), and waist to height Ratio (WHtR). It also tried to find out the relation of BRI to WC and WHtR. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 300 individuals aged between 18 and 60 years who were apparently healthy (not on any treatment or physical training) and willing to participate in this study. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. Parameters like height, weight, and WC were measured. BRI and WHtR were calculated. The data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. We observed that BRI was well correlated to the WC, body mass index (BMI), and WHtR. Both the systolic and diastolic blood pressure correlated well with BRI. BRI and WHtR, both are good parameters to evaluate the blood pressure of an individual.
