ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Intestinal constipation (IC) in patients with the digestive form of Chagas disease is one of the main reasons for seeking medical care. Population data indicate that the practice of physical activity improves gastrointestinal motility. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the bowel frequency and symptoms of constipation and their relationship with the level of physical activity in patients with and without Chagas disease. METHODS: Patients (n=120) of both genres, aged between 35 and 84 years, in which 50% (n=60) were in the Chagas group and 50% (n=60) were in the control group, were evaluated regarding the level of IC using the Constipation Assessment Scale (CAS) and regarding the level of physical activity using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). RESULTS - Patients in the Chagas group classified as active (IPAQ 2) had higher proportion (P=0.0235) of moderate IC with severe abdominal distension (P=0.0159) and decreased evacuation frequency (P=0.0281) than the patients in the control group, considered to be very active (IPAQ 1). The sedentary lifestyle was greater (P=0.0051) in the Chagas group with duration, intensity and frequency of physical activity lower than the control group. The health perception in the Chagas group was regular for 46.7% (P=0.0035) and poor for 8.3% (P=0.0244). CONCLUSION: There is a lower risk of developing intestinal constipation in more active individuals, evidencing that the level of physical activity interferes with bowel frequency and symptoms of constipation in patients with and without Chagas disease. The level of physical activity and health perception were worse in the Chagas group, reinforcing the disease stigma, which should be modified by the training of health professionals who routinely attend these patients.

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1980-0037.2017v19n2p185 Fitness zones (FZ) are a great alternative to physical activity practice. The aim of this study was verify physical activity practice and associated factors among FZ users of Pelotas. Participants answered a questionnaire containing demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral, health and on the use of FZs. A long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to determine the level of physical activity and those who reported at least 150 minutes / week of PA in the leisure time were considered sufficiently active. The study included 323 subjects (65.3% women), mean age 52.5 years, 83.6% white skin color and 61.9% married. Almost half of respondents were overweight (48.0%), 45.8% had high blood pressure, 10.5% had diabetes and 64.4% used medications. About 77.7% of respondents were classified as sufficiently active. Health perception was associated to leisure physical activity, and the better the health perception, the higher the prevalence of sufficient physical activity. Collective programs with participation of Physical Education teacher can contribute to interaction of practitione with the use of fitness zones and increase the level of physical activity of individuals.

The aim of this paper was to compare the physical activity (PA) levels in physical education (PE) teachers before and during school suspension brought by the COVID-19 quarantine. Thirty-seven PE teachers participated in the descriptive cross-sectional comparative methodological design study. In order to evaluate the PA levels, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was applied. As a statistical method, the equality of variance was calculated using the Student t test for independent samples. The results revealed less total PA MET-minutes/week in PE teachers (p=.005), with a percentage difference of 69.8 Δ%, during the COVID-19 quarantine compared to the state before the COVID-19 pandemic. PE teachers are considered professionals who help public health by reducing sedentary lifestyle in society. In that context, decrement in PA level, i.e., their inactivity determined during the COVID-19 pandemic is unacceptable.

Intense physical activity contributes to an increased demand for red blood cells, which transport oxygen to working muscles. The purpose of this study was to assess the concentration of erythroferrone (ERFE), the novel marker of erythroid activity in athletes, during the beginning of their training season. The study group consisted of 39 athletes aged 23.24 ± 3.77 years. The study was carried out during the athletes’ preparatory period of the training cycle. The control group consisted of 34 healthy men aged 22.33 ± 2.77 years. The erythropoietic activity was evaluated by determining athletes’ concentrations of erythropoietin (EPO) and erythroferrone (ERFE). The level of physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). In the athletes’ group, we observed higher concentrations of EPO (Me = 12.65 mIU/mL) and ERFE (40.00 pg/mL) compared to the control group (EPO: Me = 5.74 mIU/ml, p = 0.001; ERFE: Me = 25.50 pg/mL, p = 0.0034). The average intensity of physical exercise significantly differentiated the participants as far as EPO and ERFE concentrations. These results suggest that intense physical activity, at least at the beginning of the training season, may stimulate EPO production, which increases ERFE release. This seems to be an adaptative mechanism that provides adequate iron for enhanced erythropoiesis.

Objective of the study: to assess the effectiveness of the correction of the motor stereotype in young people (students) with postural disorders, flat feet and obesity by means of physical therapy. Material and methods. Surveyed 110 first-year students. The control group consisted of students with normal body weight, normal posture and no signs of flat feet. The comparison group consisted of students with obesity, impaired posture in the sagittal plane and flat feet. They were divided into two groups: group 1 - students who expressed a desire to correct diagnosed violations on their own and / or in independently selected rehabilitation institutions and / or during classroom physical education. Group 2 consisted of students undergoing rehabilitation using the developed program of physical therapy, which lasted 6 months and included kinesiоtherapy, massage, kinesiological taping, nutritional modification, behavioral psychocorrection. The movement stereotype of students was assessed by the Functional Movement Screen, the level of physical activity - by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Results. Students with poor posture, flat feet and obesity showed violations of the motor stereotype, which was confirmed on the basis of the worst results of all Functional Movement Screen tests (p <0.05), as well as a lower level of general motor activity (according to the levels of weekly energy consumption, determined by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire) (p <0.05) relative to the indicators of their healthy peers. Analyzing the gender difference in the test results, it was found that the guys were easier to perform exercises related to the implementation of strength (6, 7 tests), and the girls - flexibility (2, 5 tests). The developed program of physical therapy with the use of functional training on the Prosedos platform, massage, kinesiological taping, nutrition modification, behavioral psychocorrection showed a statistically significantly better effect on all characteristics of the movement pattern and the level of physical activity of students compared to the results of individuals who did non-specialized programs (p <0.05). Findings. During their studies in higher educational institutions, students with disabilities in health require increased attention in the context of identifying and correcting pathological changes, is a consequence of chronic diseases, if possible - non-drug means, in particular, physical therapy.

Abstract Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate levels of physical activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia and to compare the results with both healthy subjects and each other. Methods: A group of 50 rheumatoid arthritis patients, 95 osteoarthritis patients, 82 fibromyalgia patients and 110 healthy subjects were included in this study. Physical activity levels were assessed by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results: There were significant differences in walking and total physical activity scores in IPAQ between the rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis (OA), fibromyalgia (FMS) patients and the control group (p<0.05). 36.6% of the fibromyalgia group, 28.4% of the osteoarthritis group, 38% of the rheumatoid arthritis group and 22.7% of the healthy subjects were found to be inactive. 45.1% of the fibromyalgia group, 42.1% of the osteoarthritis group, 46% of the rheumatoid arthritis group and 36.4% of the healthy subjects were found to be insufficiently active. Conclusion: As a result, when compared to healthy people, physical activity levels were significantly decreased in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia. The decreases in the physical activity levels were clearer in patients with rheumatoid arthritis than in patients with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. Recommending regular physical activity should be integral to rheumatic disease management and walking offers a potentially accessible, inexpensive, and acceptable physical activity intervention.

The lockdown with a prohibition of free mobility introduced in many countries has affected restrictions in physical activity (PA). The purpose of the study was to compare PA during restrictions and the “unfreezing” stage. The study group consisted of 89 healthy adult students. To assess the level of PA, a long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used. The first evaluation was carried out in the period from 16 to 20 April 2020 at the time of the lockdown and the second in the period from 11 to 14 May 2020 during the so-called “unfreezing”. The average total PA rate during the first measurement was 8640 metabolic equivalent (MET)-min/week and in the second, 10,560 MET-min/week. The analysis of total energy expenditure showed a statistically significant difference (p < 0.029). The establishment of “unfreezing” laws for sport and recreation and the reduction of restrictions have significantly contributed to an increase in the overall level of PA. Based on our outcomes, we recommend students follow the scientific guidelines for undertaking PA (i.e., WHO) during the pandemic in order to maintain an appropriate pro-healthy dose of exercise.
