ABSTRACT Yield and nutraceutical quality of Sahel tomato cultivar under shade net was evaluated using different mixtures of organic substrates in Coahuila, northern Mexico. The treatments consisted of mixtures using sand (S), vermicompost (VC), solarized bovine manure (SB), agricultural soil (AS) and mineralized compost (MC). The treatments were: T1 (S:VC, 80:20), T2 (S:SB, 80:20), T3 (S:SB:AS, 80:15:05), T4 (S:VC:AS, 80:15:05), T5 (S:MC, 80:20), and a control treatment T6 (S, 100%) with Steiner solution. Yield results showed that the best organic treatments were T5 and T4 with 3.48 and 3.33 kg plant-1, respectively; while the highest yield was in control (T6) with 3.71 kg plant-1. The highest phenolic content in the organic treatment of fruits was 56.94 mg equivalent of gallic acid per 100 g in fresh weight for T5, while the treatment with chemical fertilization obtained 49.82. The greatest antioxidant capacity was obtained in T4, with 478.34 μM equivalent of Trolox/100 g fresh weight. Two colors were evaluated (yellow and red) corresponding to two ripeness phases. Lycopene content in tomatoes was in average 32% higher in the red colored fruits than in the yellow ones, with 3.12 and 2.24 mg lycopene 100 g pulp-1 values, respectively. For the red ones, treatment T5 showed the highest value (3.52) and in yellow ones T1 reported 2.35, while T2 presented the lowest values for both colors. Organic fertilizers based on S:VC can induce good amounts of lycopene in fruits of both colors, as well as improve phenols and antiOX.

The objective of this study was to determine the proportion of sand, solarized manure, vermicompost and soil capable of increasing tomato fruit yield and lycopene content. The treatments were: T1: 80 % Sand- 20 % Vermicompost (SV), T2: 80 % Sand- 20 % Solarized manure (SSM1), T3: 80 % Sand - 20 % Pelite ?Steiner solution (SPSS), T4: 80 % Sand- 5 % Soil - 15 % Vermicompost (SSoV), T5: 85 % Sand - 15 % Solarized manure (SSM2) and T6: 80 % Sand - 5 % Soil - 15 % Solarized manure (SSoSM). The organic substrates T5, T4, T1 and the control (T3) obtained larger fruits and yields. The lycopene content in tomato fruits grown in the organic substrates was 26 % higher than that obtained in the control treatment. Organic fertilizers improve the nutraceutical quality of tomato fruits, without signi cantly degrading yield.

The present work had as objective to evaluate the physical-chemical characteristics of commercial tomato fruits grafted on different solanaceous species. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in a randomized complete block design, with four blocks and six treatments, being the rootstocks: cocona (Solanum sessiliflorum); two cultivars of eggplant (Solanum aethiopicum), Long Light Green and Big Hill; jurubebão (Solanum lycocarpum) and jurubeba juna (Solanum stramonifolium), grafted with the tomato cultivar Santa Cruz Kada, and the control treatment was represented by the self-grafted tomato. Three consecutive harvests were spaced seven days after the production stabilization, and the characteristics fruits analyzed were Total Soluble Solids (ºBrix), pH, Titratable Acidity (percentage of citric acid) and TSS/TA. A statistically significant difference was found in the Tukey’s test at 5% probability in the titratable acidity, pH and fruit pulp flavor, among the evaluated treatments, while the soluble solids content did not differ between treatments in any of the harvests, but the values remained within the considered adequate for the tomato in natura in the current literature. There was a decrease in fruit flavor in all treatments, and fruit pH drop in all treatments with the exception of jurubebão, with the advancement of plant age, while the titratable acidity had an inverse behavior. The evaluated rootstocks can be used in the tomato crop, without prejudice to the quality of the tomato fruit produced.

The postharvest conservation of cut Heliconia flowers is an important factor to the success of commercialization, especially with regard to exportation. In the present study, the maximal storage time of cut inflorescences of Heliconia bihai cv. Lobster Claw at two different temperatures (12 and 19 °C) was evaluated and compared to laboratory conditions (25 °C, control treatment). Changes in visual quality, fresh weight and bract color (L*, a* and b*) were determined. The visual quality of the inflorescences and fresh weight decreased with time in all treatments. Symptoms of chilling injury were observed on the inflorescences stored at 12 °C for six and eight days. Bract color was not affected by temperature, storage time or the senescence process. The results indicate that a temperature of 12 °C is not recommended for a storage time longer than four days, whereas 19 °C can be used for a storage time of up to eight days for cut inflorescences of H. bihai cv. Lobster Claw.

Abstract A two-year-greenhouse experiment was designed to investigate the effect of four chelates, differing in percentage of Fe content and the kind of Fe bonding ligand: Fe 8 Forte (EDTA+HEEDTA), Fe 9 Premium (DTPA), Fe 13 Top (EDTA) and Librel Fe DP7 (DTPA), on the yield and fruit quality of the ‘Merkury’ F1 greenhouse tomato cultivar grown in peat substrate. Each of the tested fertilisers was applied in three different doses in order to reach the level of 50, 75 or 100 mg available Fe per 1 dm-3 of growing medium. In the control treatment the amount of this nutrient was equal to 17.9 mg dm-3. The tomato was cultivated from transplants on benches in the period from the beginning of April to the end of July. The highest marketable yield of tomato fruits was obtained from plants fertilised with Fe 9 Premium (DTPA), while the lowest was from the treatment with Fe 13 Top (EDTA) chelate. Both of these sources of iron were equally efficient for the early crop yield, which was significantly higher than that of other tested fertilisers. Irrespective of the Fe source, the most favourable dose of this nutrient for marketable and early fruit yield was 50 mg Fe dm-3. Both tested factors had little effect on fruit composition. The only exception was a significant drop of vitamin C content in the treatment supplied with Fe 9 Premium and an increment of Na in the case of Fe 13 Top use. The increase of Fe in the growing medium up to 75 and 100 mg dm-3 adversely affected the amount of P in tomato fruits.

Tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicum (L) Karsten) is an important crop cultivated in Hungary. Ethrel has been used to advance maturity and promote uniform ripening of processing tomato since 25-30 years in Hungary. The aims of the present study were 1) to evaluate the effects of two different ethrel concentrations on ripening rate, 2) to investigate lycopene content of different maturity stages, 3) to test the effect of ethrel on lycopene content. It is important to note that the experimental year (in July and August) was very rainy and cool. Ethrel was applied at two rates: 1500 and 3000 ppm. The results clearly indicate that Ethrel can be a useful and effective tool of maturity-enhancement, under present circumstances. Ripening concentration increased significantly by Ethrel. In spite of this, Ethrel treatments did not affect lycopene content of examined varieties significantly. The quality of tomato products are characterised by their lycopene content. Colour is highly important quality factor of food products. The range in lycopene contents from all samples evaluated was 48.7 to 113.0 mg kg-1 fresh weight. Also correlations between lycopene content and colour (a*/b*, and chroma) were investigated also.

The expediency of introducing wastewater sediment (WWS) in fresh form together with additional fillers (peat, sawdust, straw) is justified. Field experience was conducted in 2015-2017. using WWS station of treatment facilities in Tver on sod-podzolic sandy loam soil. WWS was applied once during the laying of the experiment together with organic substrates in different proportions with a general application rate of 60 t/ha. For comparative characteristics, the experiment included a variant with compost harvested at the treatment plant, based on WWS and sawdust. The influence of non-traditional types of organic fertilizers on the yield of field crops (vetch-oat mix, winter rye, spring barley), the quality of the resulting product, including the accumulation of heavy metals in it, was revealed. The greatest effect was observed when applying WWS with peat and WWS with sawdust. The study of the ratio of the components of mixtures with WWS showed that the highest productivity and yield increase was ensured by the use of WWS: substrates = 1: 1. A further increase in the participation of sawdust, peat and straw led to a decrease in productivity and quality indicators. WWS, introduced in different ratios together with organic substrates, did not cause excessive accumulation of heavy metals in crop production. The sequence of heavy metals was established: Zn> Cu> Co> Pb> As> Cd, which reflects the degree of their accumulation in the green mass of the vetch-oat mix, winter rye and barley grain. The influence of the studied norms for introducing WWS on the yield and quality of crops is maintained during all three years of the crop rotation link.

The use of renewable materials as a source of nutrients, besides being a solution of interest for waste disposal, may also be an effective way to reduce the high costs of inputs needed for the production of forestry seedlings. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth of Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell. Brenan) (angico branco) cultivated in organic substrates. A randomized block design was adopted and the treatments were distributed in a 3 × 5 factorial scheme, with three organic residues: decomposed burity (moriche palm) stem, carnaúba straw and organic compost mixed with the soil in four percentages: 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% of the composition of substrate and a control treatment with soil only, without incorporating the organic residue, with six repetitions. Ninety days after emergence, the seedlings were collected to determine the growth parameters: stem diameter (SD), height (H), of the following indexes: H/D, leaf number (LN), total chlorophyll (T), leaf area (LA), dry mass of the aerial part (DMAP), dry mass of roots (DMR), total dry mass (TDM) H/DMAP: DMAP/DMR, and Dickson Quality Index (DQI). The treatments that contained 60% and 80% of organic compost presented the best responses. It is concluded that the production of angico branco seedlings cultivated with substrate with the addition of 80:20 (organic compost: soil) presented the best results and was technically feasible according to the characteristics and indexes analyzed.

abstractApplication of organic fertilizers in the production of these plants to eliminate or substantially reduce the use of chemical inputs and improve the growth and quality of plants. For instance, in present study the effect of vermicompost and spent mushroom compost application on nutritional status and essential oil components of summer Savory (Satureja hortensis L.) was investigated. This experiment was conducted in research greenhouse of Faculty of Agriculture at Mohaghegh Ardabili University in layout of completely randomized design with five replications on  Savory in 2014. Experimental treatments included different substrates contain vermicompost, washed and unwashed spent mushroom compost in five levels (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 Percent v/v). After flowering, plants were harvested and parameters such as leaf area, leaf and plant dry weight, chlorophyll index of leaf and N, P, K, and Ca content and essential oil component of plants were measured. The results showed that the effect of organic substrates on macronutrient content and growth parameters of savory were significant. The highest Nitrogen content (6.3%) and Phosphorus (0.98%) in shoot of savory was obtained in substrate supplemented with 40% vermicompost. Plants grown in the media containing 30% of vermicompost and 50% washed spent mushroom compost (SMC) have higher potassium (3.19%) and calcium (2.48%) content, respectively. The lowest nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content in the aerial part was obtained in the control treatment. Moreover, application of organic fertilizers significantly affected on essential oil percent and composition compounds of savory.  The highest and lowest essential oil content were obtained in plants in substrates containing 30 % of vermicompost and unwashed spent mushroom compost respectively. Main components of essential oil were carvacrol and gamma- trepenine. The highest level of carvacrol (62.10) and gamma-trepenine (32.05) were obtained in plants in substrate containing 40 and 20 % of washed spent mushroom respectively.

Organic fertilizers have beneficial effects on plants growth and quality. However, vermicompost increases electrical conductivity in soil due to increased salinity associated with continued usage. The experiment was conducted in a research field at the University of Guilan to determine effects of 7 Mt ha-1 of cow manure vermicompost, vermiwash prepared from 7 Mt ha-1 of vermicompost, leachate vermicompost + vermiwash, 50 Mt ha-1 municipal solid waste compost (MSWC), chemical fertilizer (NPK 50-0-300) and no fertilization as a control on peppermint yield and quality. Fertilizer type affected all measured characteristics except number of nodes, stem fresh weight, total phenols and antioxidant capacity. Plants treated with vermicompost, vermiwash or leachate vermicompost + vermiwash were the tallest and had the highest levels of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll and carotenoids. Plants treated with vermicompost or vermiwash had the highest total plant fresh weight, leaf fresh weight and total fresh yield. The leachate vermicompost, vermiwash and vermicompost can be used as organic fertilizers for sustainable peppermint cultivation.

188,7%. The arable land of the Republic of Komi is mainly represented by dern-sub-ground soils with low natural fertility, which without the use of fertilizers are quickly subjected to degradation processes, which dramatically reduces their productivity. The aim of the research is to evaluate the efficiency of long-term use of organic and mineral fertilizers in the growing of potatoes in feed crop rotation in the conditions of the Komi Republic. The methodological basis for carrying out the works was comprehensive studies of dern-subhead soils, potato tubers on the sites of a multi-year field experiment laid on the lands of the Institute of Agrobiotechnology of the FRC Komi SC UB RAS in accordance with the «Methodological Instructions of the Geographical Network of Experiments with Fertilizers». A long period of research (more than 40 years) was characterized by different climatic conditions, which affected the number of crops and the quality of potato tubers. There were 7 rotations (14 years) with potato cultivation. Organic fertilizers – peat-avous compost (TNK) in doses of 40 and 80 t/ha (1 and 2 background, respectively) for potatoes and mineral fertilizers – NPK in doses of 1/3; 1/2 and 1 to replenish the carry-out of food elements by plants. The positive effect of the integrated use of organic and mineral fertilizers on the yield and quality of potatoes, as well as on the fertility of soddy-podzolic light loamy medium cultivated soil in fodder crop rotation in the soil and climatic conditions of the Komi Republic, has been established. As a result of the use of six-bed crop rotation and the integrated application of fertilizers, metabolic and hydrolytic acidity decreased in soils from 1978 to 2019; humus content increased by 0.5% (in control); 0.2–0.5% (with three doses of mineral fertilizers); 0.3–1.1% (with TNCs); 0.2–1.6% (with combined use of organic and mineral fertilizers). The largest potato yields were obtained from the combined use of organic (80 t/ha) and mineral fertilizers (1 NPK) and amounted to 37.1 t/ha tubers (8.5 thousand/ha feed units). The largest potato harvests were obtained with the combined use of organic (80 t/ha) and mineral fertilizers (1 NPK) and amounted to 37.1 t/ha of tubers (8.5 thousand/ha of feed units). With this ratio of fertilizers, the high quality of potato tubers was also determined: the starch content was 15.5%, vitamin C – 19.4 mg%, crude protein – 14.1%. The amount of nitrate nitrogen did not exceed the MPC (MPC 250 mg.s.m.). Economic calculations showed that if TNK is added 40 t/ha 1 NPK to the dern-sub-ground soils of agricultural use in the medium-sized zone of the Komi Republic when growing potatoes, the conditional net income will be 68.4 thousand rubles from 1 ha, the cost of 1 t of potatoes – 2.8 thousand rubles, profitability 188.7%.
