Cerebrovascular accidents and coronary artery disease are the leading causes of cardiovascular mortalities in Brazil and high levels of LDL cholesterol are one of the main risk factors. In this context, several plant extracts and natural substances have shown promise as cholesterol-lowering. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of the hydroalcoholic extract of the fruit of H. dulcisand of dihydromyricetin in cholesterol reduction in hypercholesterolemic rats. Forty-two Wistar male rats were distributed into seven groups of six animals that received diets supplemented with 1% cholesterol and 0.3% cholic acid, with the exception of the control group, which received conventional diets. Animals were treated with oral suspensions containing: atorvastatin 1.0 mg/kg; H. dulcisextract at 50.0 and 100.0 mg/kg and dihydromyricetin at 25.0 and 50.0 mg/kg vehicle (control group). The following biochemical markers were evaluated; total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, triglycerides, AST, ALT, and alkaline phosphatase. The hypercholesterolemic diet was effective in inducing hypercholesterolemia, increasing total cholesterol by 112.7% relative to the control group. The treatments with two doses of the extract proved to be promising hypocholesterolemic agents, as they were able to substantially reduce total cholesterol and LDL-C, without significantly altering triglycerides, hepatic transaminases, and alkaline phosphatase, thereby encouraging the studies with the plant H. dulcis. The groups treated with the flavonoid dihydromyricetin, although they showed a significant reduction in total cholesterol and LDL-C, and found increases in triglycerides and hepatic transaminases, which is unwanted in the context of hypercholesterolaemia.

To investigate the antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic effect of Momordica charantia (Karala), the aqueous extract of the Karala fruit was tested on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Thirty six albino rats were used in the experiment, 30 diabetic and the remaining six as negative control (T1). Diabetes was induced by administering (injecting) STZ at dose of 55mg/kg body weight. Thirty diabetic animals were randomly divided into five groups such as diabetic control group (T2) without any application of treatment, and groups T3,T4,T5 and T6 were treated with aqueous extract of Karala fruits daily at the doses of 250,    500 and 750mg/kg and glibenclamide (at a dose of 5mg/kg body weight) respectively. The body weight was taken and blood samples were collected from individual animal to determine glucose levels at 15 day interval up to 90 days. In addition, Asparate  Transaminenase(AST), Alanine Transaminenase(ALT), Alkaline Phosphatase(ALP), Total cholesterol (TCh) and Triglyceride (TGA) were determined at day 15 and at the end of the experiment. All three doses of Karala extracts reduced diabetic induced blood sugar and the reduction is comparable with standard glibenclamide (GLM) dose particularly with higher doses Karala extracts (500 and 750mg). Karala also prevented body weight loss due to induced diabetes as did by GLM treatment.. The treatment also resulted in a significant reduction of Asparate Transaminenase(AST), Alanine Transaminenase(ALT), Alkaline Phosphatase(ALP), Total cholesterol (TCh) and Triglyceride (TGA) activities of treated rats when compared to the STZ induced  diabetic rats. Higher doses of Karala (500 and 750mg/kg) are as effective as standard GLM dose on measured variables. This study demonstrated that Karala has hyperglycemia and antihyperlipidemic effect against STZ induced diabetic rats. These findings open the possibility of using Karala extract to treat diabetic animal and human patients although further research is warranted. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jesnr.v5i1.11550 J. The present study was carried out to investigate the antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic properties of hydroalcoholic extract of Peganum harmala in streptozotocin-induced diabetic male rats. In an experimental study, 64 normal Wistar albino male rats (200–230 g) were randomly divided into 8 groups. Control and diabetic rats were treated with normal saline and three different doses (30, 60, and 120 mg/kg) of hydroalcoholic extract of Peganum harmala seeds for 4 weeks orally. At the end of treatment, blood samples were taken and glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-c, HDL-c, malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TCA), ALT, AST, GGT, bilirubin, and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C) were determined. STZ-induced diabetic rats showed significant changes in the values of glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-c, MDA, TAC, ALT, AST, GGT, bilirubin, and HbA1C in comparison with normal rats. Administration of the extract to diabetic rats resulted in a remarkable decrease in glucose, lipid profiles, MDA, ALT, AST, GGT, bilirubin, and HbA1C levels and increase in TAC relative to diabetic group. The results of this study indicated that hydroalcoholic extract of Peganum harmala seeds possesses antidiabetic and hypolipidemic activities and could be useful in treatment of diabetes.

<p><strong>Objective:</strong> To evaluate <em>in vivo </em>tissue reaction to the extract of araçá (<em>Psidium cattleianum</em>) associated with inactivated microorganisms. <strong>Material and Methods:</strong> A 0.1 mL suspension was used containing Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, <em>Fusobacterium nucleatum, Enterococcus faecalis, Peptostreptococcus micros</em>, and <em>Porphyromonas endodontalis,</em> which were inactivated by heat and mixed into a 1.0 mL saline (control group), an aqueous solution, or a hydroalcoholic extract of araçá. Eighteen male rats (<em>Rattus norvegiccus</em>) under general anesthesia received 0.2 mL of 1% intravenous Evans blue. Thirty minutes later, 0.1 mL of one of the associations was injected into the animals’ dorsal region. The animals were euthanized after 3 and 6 hours, and the materials obtained were placed in formamide for 72 hours then analyzed in a spectrophotometer (λ=630 hm). For the morphological analysis, 30 rats received polyethylene tubes implants with the extracts or the saline with the associations in the dorsal region and euthanized after 7 and 30 days to be analyzed according to an inflammation cell score. <strong>Results:</strong> No significant difference (p&gt;0.05) was observed in the edema among groups. The optical microscopy results showed a repair in the 30-day-period, which was higher when compared to the 7-day-period (p&lt;0.0001). Nevertheless, in the 7-day-period, the hydroalcoholic extract presented a significant response compared to the aqueous extract (p=0.05) and a trend for better results than the control group. <strong>Conclusion: </strong>The aqueous and hydroalcoholic araçá extracts associated with inactivated microorganisms showed similar responses to control, indicating no interference on the toxic effects of the bacterial components in tissue repair.</p><p><strong>Keywords</strong></p><p>Anaerobic bacteria; Edema; Inflammation; Plant extracts; <em>Psidium.</em></p>

Study was designed to show the activity of crude alkaloids against toxicity of E. granulosus. 20 adult albino male rats were used in present study and divided randomly to following groups (each group consist 5 rats); control group received ad libidium, posistive group injected with 2,5 X 103 of E. granulosus protoscolices third group injected with protoscolices and treated with 0.25 mg/ml crude alkaloids, fourth group injected with protoscolices and treated with 0.25 mg/ml crude alkaloids. The results show high Scavenging activity of crude alkaloids extracts reach to 88.6%. Otherwise, The results show high significant increased (p less than 0.05) in levels of Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) in group injected with protoscolices compared with control group. Oxidative stress factor in group injected with protoscolices show significant increased (p less than 0.05) in levels of MDA (malonedialdehyied) and significant decreased (p less than 0.05) in levels of glutathione (GSH) and catalase compared with control group. While, after used crude alkaloids with E. granulosus, the results showed non-significant changes (p less than 0.05) in liver functions and MDA, GSH and catalase also showed non-significant changes (p less than 0.05) compared with control group. It was concluded that crude alkaloids has been potential role against toxicity of Echinococcus granulosus in male rats.

AbstrakPepaya mengandung pektin yang merupakan serat larut air. Pektin berkemampuan mengikat asam empedu dan dieliminasi keluar tubuh melalui feses. Penurunan jumlah asam empedu di lumen usus menyebabkan hepar menggunakan kolesterol dalam darah untuk membentuk asam empedu. Hal tersebut mengakibatkan penurunan jumlah kolesterol.Tujuan studi ini adalah untuk melihat pengaruh pemberian ekstrak pepaya mengkal terhadap kadar kolesterol total, HDL dan LDL tikus putih. Desain penelitian ini adalah eksperimental menggunakan 20 ekor tikus putih jantan yang dibagi menjadi empat kelompok, yaitu kelompok kontrol, dan kelompok perlakuan dengan pemberian ekstrak pepaya dengan dosis 0,5 ml, 1 ml dan 1,5 ml per 200g/BB melalui oral selama 15 hari.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terjadinya penurunan rerata kadar kolesterol total, LDL, dan peningkatan kadar HDL serum tikus setelah pemberian ekstrak pepaya selama 15 hari secara bermakna (p<0,05). Tetapi tidak terjadi perbedaan yang bermakna (p>0,05) antara kelompok yang diberi ekstrak pepaya dengan dosis 0,5 ml, 1 ml, dan 1,5 ml.Kesimpulan yang dapat diambil dari studi ini ialah bahwa ekstrak pepaya dapat menurunkan kadar kolesterol total, LDL, dan peningkatan kadar HDL pada serum tikus putih jantanKata kunci : pektin, kolesterol, asam empedu, serat, tikus.AbstractPapaya contain pectin which is a water-soluble fiber. Pectin has the ablity to bind bile acids and eliminated out of the body through the feces. Decrease in the amount of bile acids in intestinal lumen causing liver uses cholesterol to synthesize bile acids blood.The purpose of this study was to see the effect of papaya extract on total cholesterol, HDL and LDL of male rats. This is an experimental research design using 20 white male rats were divided into four groups : control group and group treated with papaya extract a dose of 0,5 ml, 1 ml per 200 gr/body weight orally for 15 days.Results showed a decrease in everage total cholesterol, LDL and increased serum levels of rats after administration of papaya extract after 15 days wereARTIKEL PENELITIAN30significantly (p<0,05). But no significantly difference occused (p>0,05) between groups were fed papaya extractat a dose of 0,5 ml, 1 ml and 1,5 ml.Conclusions from the study are that papaya extract can lower total cholesterol, LDL and levels increased in the serum of male ratsKey word : pectin, cholesterol, bile acid, fiber, rats.

Background: Due to the antioxidant effects of Zataria multiflora (ZM) and Carvacrol (CAR) in various problems and the prominent role of the ROS in neurotoxicity induced by Doxorubicin (DOX), this study was designed to investigate the effects of ZM hydroalcoholic extract and CAR on DOX-induced oxidative stress in rat brain Methods: 24 male rats were randomly divided into four groups including: 1)Control ,2)Doxorubicin (DOX) that received DOX via a tail vein on the first day of the study, 3,4) ZM+DOX and CAR+DOX which received ZM and CAR by gavage for 28 consecutive days. Brain tissue removed for redox markers evaluation. Results: MDA level in the DOX group was significantly increased compared to control group while in treated groups did not show any significant changes in comparison with the DOX group. Also, Thiol content in DOX group showed significant reduction compared to control group. Thiol contents in treated groups showed no significant difference compared to DOX group. Catalase (CAT) activity, an antioxidant enzyme, in the DOX group were significantly decreased compared to control group and increased in treated rats in comparison with the DOX group. Activity of Superoxide dismutase (SOD), an antioxidant enzyme, in the DOX group was significantly reduced compared to control group and increased in treated rats in comparison with the DOX group. Conclusion: The present study showed that ZM hydroalcoholic extract and CAR could inhibit DOX induced oxidative stress of the brain mainly with effect on the enzymatic antioxidant defense system.

The functional state of liver in 112 term newborns, who depending on their antenatal ontogenesis were divided into 4 groups, was studied. The first group (control) was made of 30 healthy newborns from mothers with physiological course of pregnancy; the second group consisted of 30 children whose mothers suffered influenza A(H3N2) (antibody titers were 1:4-1:16), the third group had 27 newborns with antenatal anamnesis complicated with influenza A(H3N2) (antibody titers were 1:8-1:32) and the fourth group had 25 children whose mothers suffered A(H3N2) (antibody titers were 1:32-1:128) at early stages of gestation. In newborns in the serum of the umbilical blood there were found the contents of total protein, albumins, total, indirect and direct bilirubin, activity of alanine aminotransferase, serum glutamate-oxaloacetate-transaminase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, lactic dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase, concentration of total cholesterol, lipoproteins of low density and triglycerides. In babies from mothers who suffered influenza infection with antibody titers 1:32-1:128 there was the decrease of total protein till 55.1±1.27 g/l (in the control group it was 62.1±1.45 g/l; р&#60;0.01) and albumins till 34.2±1.01 g/l (in the control it was 38.2±1.13 g/l; р&#60;0.05) against the increase of total bilirubin till 35.5±1.29 mcmole/l (in the control it was 25.3±1.67 g/l; р&#60;0.001), of indirect bilirubin till 33.2±1.28 mcmole/l (in the control it was 23.4±1.67 mcmole/l; р&#60;0.001), of direct bilirubin till 2.33±0.10 mcmole/l (in the control it was 1.91±0.09; р&#60;0.01) and the activity of alkaline phosphatase till 175.7±10.62 МЕ/l (in the control it was 141.6±6.39 МЕ/l; р&#60;0.01). This showed the suppression of protein-synthesizing and pigment function of the liver as well as of the process of cholestasis. At the same time there was the decrease of total cholesterol till 1.83±0.06 mmole/l (in the control it was 2.08±0.07 mmole/l; р&#60;0.01) and lipoproteins of high density till 1.02±0.06 mmole/l (in the control it was 1.27±0.06 mmole/l; р&#60;0.01). Their concentration causes the stability of cellular membranes and hypothalamic-pituitarium-adrenal system in newborns to unfavourable factors in the early postnatal period of their development.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the attenuating effect of given selenium and/or magnesium on ethanol-induced oxidative stress, disturbances of liver function and cholesterol metabolism. Forty male rats were divided into five groups: C – control, Et – intoxicated with alcohol (15% solution in drinking water), Et + Mg, Et + Se, Et + Mg + Se – intoxicated with alcohol and supplemented with selenium (0.4 mg Se/l water), magnesium (100 mg Mg/l water) and combination of Se and Mg, respectively. The experiment was carried out over the 3 months. The results show that the chronic ingestion of alcohol induces lipid peroxidation and histopathological changes in liver. Supplementation with magnesium only partially alleviates oxidative stress and damages in this tissue. The both selenium alone and combination of magnesium and selenium significantly elevated total antioxidant status (TAS) in serum, activity of glutathione peroxidase and ratio of reduced glutathione to oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) in liver and retarded oxidative stress and histopathological changes in this tissue. Chronic administration of ethanol (alone and with magnesium) resulted in significant decrease in the serum total cholesterol and retardation in the body weight gain in comparison with the control group. In the groups supplemented with selenium and selenium and magnesium simultaneously, concentration of total cholesterol in serum and body gains was similar to the control group. Supplementation of Se or selenium and magnesium simultaneously significantly enhances antioxidant defence and is more effective against alcohol-induced oxidative stress, disturbance of liver function and cholesterol metabolism than the separate use of magnesium.

High oxidative stress in cells due to inflammation process or excessive cell proliferation would produce oxidants or free radicals with biomarkers, one of which is malondialdehyde (MDA). Passion fruit seed&rsquo;s contain high antioxidant and are expected to decrease the level of cholesterol and MDA. The objective is to identify the effect of passion fruit seed&rsquo;s ethanol extract in Wistar rats that have been fed with atherogenic feed. The method was preclinical trial (post-test control group design) in rats, by administering passion fruit seed&rsquo;s ethanol extract for 14 days. This study used 26 male rats aged two months, divided into 5 groups. The result showed significant difference in MDA level which was found in group that was given passion fruit seed extract 10mg/kg BW with positive control group that was given standard feed. Passion fruit seed&rsquo;s extract showed significant difference in level of triglyceride, which was found in negative control group that was given atherogenic feed with group that was given passion fruit seed&rsquo;s extract 5mg/kg BW (mean&plusmn;standard deviation: 1.09&plusmn;0.30 mg/dL vs 0.77&plusmn;0.25mg/dL; p=0.048). This study showed that passion fruit seed&rsquo;s ethanol extract had significant lowering effect in level of MDA, total cholesterol, and triglyceride for 14 days.

Background: Iranian traditional medicine uses hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) as an effective medicinal plant to reduce pain and inflammation in different diseases. Although the anti-inflammatory effect of this plant is proved, there is no study into its analgesic effects. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the analgesic effect of the hydroalcoholic extract from hyssop flowers and upper branches. Methods: This experimental study was conducted on 66 male rats that were divided into several groups including a saline control group, the groups of different doses of hyssop extract, morphine positive control group, the groups of hyssop extract plus morphine, and the most effective dose of the hyssop extract plus naloxone. All injections were administered intraperitoneally, and the pain was measured through the tail flick test. Results: Based on the results, 600 mg/kg was the most effective analgesic hyssop extract dose, and the most analgesic effect was observed at 45 minutes after administration. In addition, the administration of the most effective extract dose (600 mg/kg) plus morphine significantly improved the analgesic effects of morphine (P<0.001). Finally, the administration of naloxone plus the most effective extract dose (600 mg/kg) significantly reduced the analgesic effect of the extract (P<0.05). Conclusion: Overall, the hydroalcoholic extract of hyssop has analgesic effects that are probably applied through opioid receptors.
