Pakistani society is facing numerous problems such as intolerance, violence, lying, dishonesty and sexual harassment to mention just a few. Parents and schools have a major role to play in the moral development of children. This mixed methods study examined teachers’ involvement in developing moral values in children from three private sector schools in Karachi, Pakistan. Document analysis of primary schools’ curriculum, in-depth interviews and classroom observations of nine teachers were conducted to understand how moral values are imparted through formal education. Additionally, 240 parents participated in a quantitative survey to investigate parental involvement in the moral development of children. Findings revealed inadequate focus of the schools’ curricula towards moral education, teachers’ limited perceptions and their subsequent lack of contribution to moral development of students. The quantitative data from parents showed satisfactory involvement of parents in moral growth of their children, measuring above 60% for every variable. Data also revealed that parents focus more on instructions rather than discussions about the moral values with their children. Findings highlight the need for coordinated efforts towards moral development of children involving parents, teachers and schools.

Therefore, questions of universality and cultural specificity in the development of moral values are addressed here. First, the author reviews preconditions of moral value development, including precursors of self-construal. The internalization process of moral values reveals the importance of self-regulation capacities and the motivating dynamic of moral values. Second, the focus is on the development of moral values in diverse cultural contexts. The multilevel structure of socialization conditions is examined in light of different cultural models for moral values and their emotional components. The concluding part suggests broadening research on moral development by focusing on implications of ongoing socioeconomic and cultural changes and cultural encounters.

The article emphasizes the importance of moral values in the process of developing adolescents. At present, as youths' cognitive, emotional, social development continue to mature, their understanding of morality expands and their behavior becomes more closely aligned with their values and beliefs. Therefore, moral development describes the evolution of these guiding principles and is demonstrated by the ability to apply these guidelines in daily life. Adolescents are receptive to their culture, to the models they see at home, in school and in the mass media. Adolescents' evaluations of others' emotional states and anticipations of the effects of social interactions or moral violations are key to moral development, as these emotional judgments pertain to issues of fairness, justice, harm, and rights. Fortunately, most children share the values of their parents about the most important things. The priorities and principles of parents and the example of good behavior can teach young teens to take the high road when other roads look tempting.
