Abstract Competitive advantage is a relative feature, evaluated in respect of other competing enterprises. The gaining of sustainable competitive advantage is conditioned by knowledge of own performance and the results of the competitive environment. SMEs have limited opportunities to obtain such information on their own. The method of mutual benchmarking changes this situation by introducing the collaborative network. The aim of the cooperation is to support each of the group members to achieve sustainable competitive advantage, which is the result of a conscious strategy, and not only a matter of chance. This cooperation is based on the collecting and processing of data and sharing information through a common IT platform: for example, a group of Polish SMEs was shown how to implement such a common IT solution and how to provide the information preparing within the proposed service. The whole is a complete proposal for effective support of creating a competitive strategy in SMEs.

The article considers the dependence of the formation of enterprise strategy on the importance of marketing trends. The need to predict possible market trends in order to respond to them in a timely manner has been proven. The stages of the analysis process are considered. At the first stage, a study of the current situation is conducted and trends are identified that are important when planning further activities. The marketing trends that are defined for the enterprise of the brewing industry of Ukraine - the company "Obolon" are described. At the second stage, the significance of marketing trends is assessed according to the criteria "Trend strength" and "Level of consumer environment development". The following indicators are proposed to assess the significance of the criterion "Trend strength": stability over time, awareness, emotionality, usefulness to the consumer. To determine the significance of the criterion "Level of development of the consumer environment" you can use indicators: customer satisfaction, frequency of product purchase, customer loyalty, comfortable conditions of purchase. A questionnaire is compiled, consumers are surveyed and average scores are determined to assess these indicators. The overall score is determined by multiplying the average score by the weighting factor of the indicator. At the next stage, the position of each trend in the field of the matrix "Trend strength - The level of development of the consumer environment" is determined. The matrix consists of 9 quadrants. The quadrants are grouped into three zones. Zone 1 includes the following quadrants: Independent dependent, Domesticated elephants, Situational dolphins. Trends that fall into this area must be taken into account when forming the company's strategy. Zone 2 has the following quadrants: Geeks, Arabian horses, Dependent amateurs. The trends that fall into it are of medium importance. Therefore, they should be analyzed to determine the appropriateness of their strength. The third zone contains the quadrants Floating Giraffes, Free Crows, Wandering. Trends that fall into this area do not have much impact on the company's activities. Therefore, they can be neglected in shaping the strategy of the enterprise.

As in any game, the success of competitive strategies depends on knowing the rules as well as the other players. Nevertheless, in the real competitive environment, the rules are not always clear and can change very quickly, demanding quick responses and making it increasingly difficult to map the moves of the main players. Strong monitoring channels must be maintained to follow changes in the competitive environment and to discern new trends. Changes in the environment can result from emerging technologies or changes in society’s behavior, and thus in clients’ demands. They can also be the result of competitors’ moves in the market. Thus developing a good competitive strategy depends on mapping the environment and constantly monitoring it to be able to capitalize quickly on opportunities or neutralize threats. The focus of this chapter is on mapping the environment. It will show the main aspects of the model for industry analysis and explain the process of forming strategic groups and pressure maps.

This paper addresses the issues associated with physics and technology of diode lasers based on self-organized quantum dots (QDs). Theoretically predicted advantages of a QD array as the active region of a semiconductor laser and basic principles of QD formation using self-organization phenomena are discussed. Special attention is paid to relationship between structural and electronic properties of QDs and laser characteristics. Recent ahcievements in controlling these parameters including the effects of vertical stacking, changing the matrix bandgap and the surface density of QDs are reviewed. The threshold and power characteristics of the state-of-the-art QD lasers are demonstrated.

Daylighting is one of the key parameters of internal environment generation in buildings. This parameter determines creation of suitable conditions for visual activities in internal spaces and contributes to human well-being and comfort. Daylight is also the primary stimulus for synchronizing the human circadian photobiological system. Traditional parameters and criterions based explicitly on photopic vision have been critically re-evaluated and basic principles of circadian photometry have been developed in theoretical level. Nevertheless daylighting has often been neglected or left out from the main design proposals, which are usually just focused on covering basic needs for vision tasks represented barely by the illumination limits on working plane. Because the amount of light entering the eye is the most important for circadian entrainment, the illuminance recorded on a vertical plane, at eye level, is more significant for human biological system. This paper deals with the comparison of internal horizontal and vertical illuminance recorded in 3 models of room, inserted in simulation program Radiance and illuminated by three types of lighting devices, i.e. window, light-pipes and permanent supplementary artificial lighting represented by the combination of window and light-pipes. Achieved data also express the influence of a workplace position on the amount of illuminance entering the eye according to the direction of the incoming daylight from windows in side-lit room.
