Emotional narration can provide innovative ideas for sustainable urban facilities. The design of sustainable urban facilities starts from the concept of emotional design, focuses on improving the user’s experience, implements innovative design process, extends the product life cycle, utilizes new sustainable materials, combines emotional factors with product functions, and gets more citizens participate in the design process. The research result shows that the gradual emotional narration thinking change from a single dimension to multiple dimensions can promote the design innovation, upgrades service of urban public facilities, and enhances the connection between users and urban facilities. It can be seen that a series of sustainable urban facilities designed based on emotional narration can serve as effective carriers for communication between urban residents and the city. Sustainable urban facilities with humanistic care are dedicated to making urban residents realize they cannot only enjoy the urban facilities, but also participate in the creation of better social environment

Development of the city in our country with all facilities and public facilities constructed within the framework of the modern era. However, the cleanliness of the city, especially the implementation of the highway is still impressive sweeping away from the modern age because of the cleanliness of the facility is still using a simple device. Although existing tools are more sophisticated street sweeper, but its use can not be sustained due to economic reasons and substantial operational costs. Through the design process, the design of the street sweeper means look for a solution that can ease the work of street sweeper. Designing started from existing products, street sweeper activity analysis and anthropometric measurements of components and users. Of this design obtained a draft means cheaper road sweeper and is expected to streamline and improve work efficiency street sweeper.

Film Unyil puppet comes not just part of the entertainment world that can be enjoyed by people from the side of the story, music, and dialogue. However, there is more value in it which is a manifestation of the creator that can be absorbed into the charge for the benefit of educating the children of Indonesia to the public at large. The Unyil puppet created by the father of Drs. Suyadi is one of the works that are now widely known by the whole people of Indonesia. The process of creating a puppet Unyil done with simple materials and formation of character especially adapted to the realities of the existing rural region. Through this process, this research leads to the design process is fundamentally educational puppet inspired by the creation of Si Unyil puppet. The difference is the inspiring character created in this study is on the characters that exist in urban life, especially the city of Jakarta. Thus the results of this study are the pattern of how to shape the design of products through the creation of the puppet with the approach of urban culture.

AbstractA design problem with deficient information is generally described as wicked or ill-defined. The information insufficiency leaves designers with loose settings, free environments, and a lack of strict boundaries, which provides them with more opportunities to facilitate innovation. Therefore, to capture the opportunity behind the uncertainty of a design problem, this study models an innovative design as a composite solving process, where the problem is clarified and resolved from fuzziness to satisfying solutions by interplay among design problems, knowledge, and solutions. Additionally, a triple-helix structured model for the innovative product design process is proposed based on the co-evolution of the problem, solution, and knowledge spaces, to provide designers with a distinct design strategy and method for innovative design. The three spaces interact and co-evolve through iterative mappings, including problem structuring, knowledge expansion, and solution generation. The mappings carry the information processing and decision-making activities of the design, and create the path to satisfying solutions. Finally, a case study of a reactor coolant flow distribution device is presented to demonstrate the practicability of this model and the method for innovative product design.

Abstract:In contemporary urban Africa, the turbulence of the city requires incessant innovation that is capable of generating new ways of being. Rather than treating popular culture as some distinctive sector, this article attempts to investigate the popular as methods of bringing together activities and actors that on the surface would not seem compatible, and as experimental forms of generating value in the everyday life of urban residents. This investigation, sited largely in Douala, Cameroon, looks at how youth from varying neighborhoods attempt to get by, and at the unexpected forms of contestation that can ensue.

The region of Yushu has fragile natural environment. In 2010, it suffered severe damages caused by earthquakes. This paper subject, on the basis of status research of natural and cultural environment in Yushu area and urban public facilities across the world, is aiming at a design attempt of public facilities suitable for Yushu area under the guidance of sustainable-development design theory. After constructing computer models, we made physical models to further test the reliability of our scheme. The overall design acts according to circumstances, and makes it environmental friendly, developmental sustainable, economical, aesthetic, practical and reliable. We also added to our design some local characteristics to make it better integrate into the local natural environmental features so that it could be widely used. In the end, we summarized the pros and cons of the scheme through theoretical analysis of our design process, despite that, in June 2014, we had an on-the-spot investigation in Yushu, and according to its current state of development, we made outlooks of our further scheme practice.

Knostrop Footbridge was designed and constructed as part of the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme. The project’s principle objective was to provide new walking and cycling routes along the River Aire, as well as creating a landmark gateway to the city. Given the intended purpose, budget, programme, and site constraints, a list of key aspirations was developed:

Creation of a slender, flowing structure which “floats” over the water and encourages local use and interest.

Simplified construction through off-site fabrication and streamlined installation.

Mirroring the alignment of the soon to be constructed Knostrop Weir and utilising the weir walls for sub structure support, all whilst accommodating the construction lag between the weir and the bridge.

A durable, low maintenance structure is essential with the difficult access constraints of the weir.

Achieving the above in combination required an innovative approach. Numerous potential solutions were developed, experimented with, and analysed, prior to finalising the design.

This iterative process allowed the bridge to develop into a unique, innovative, and recognisable design, and one which exceeded expectations to efficiently fulfil its purpose with minimal anticipated lifetime maintenance.

This paper presents the innovative design solutions adopted in overcoming the various challenges and achieving the design aspirations.

This is the first study to comprehensively evaluate the benefit of urban open spaces and cropland with different adjacent public facilities seen as locally undesirable (“not in my backyard,” NIMBY) or desirable (“yes in my backyard,” YIMBY). The total benefit increases or decreases for urban open space and cropland with adjacent NIMBY or YIMBY facilities in a municipality in Taiwan. The results show that for the city as a whole, the current arrangement of NIMBY and YIMBY in different zones decreases the total benefit of urban open spaces in highly urbanized zones and increases the total damage to cropland in extremely rural zones. This indicates a need to avoid further installing NIMBY or YIMBY facilities in already occupied urban open spaces. The results also demonstrate that locating NIMBY or YIMBY facilities near cropland fails to highlight the benefit of YIMBY facilities and magnifies opposition to NIMBY facilities. For individual housing units, the total damage is 1.87% of the average housing price for cropland-type open space with adjacent NIMBY or YIMBY facilities, and the total benefit is 7.43% of the average housing price for urban-type open space in a highly urbanized area. In contrast, the total benefit for open space with adjacent NIMBY or YIMBY facilities is a 2.95%-13.80% increase in the average housing price for areas with mixed urban open space and cropland.
