Quality of the work environment in selected European countries

Background: Physician satisfaction is a multidimensional concept related to many factors. Despite the wide range of research regarding factors affecting physician satisfaction in different European countries, there is a lack of literature reviews analyzing and summarizing current evidence. The aim of the article is to synthetize the literature studying the factors associated with physician satisfaction. Methods: We searched: MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library from January 2000 to January 2017. The eligibility criteria included: (1) target population: physicians working in European hospitals; (2) quantitative research aimed at assessing physician satisfaction and associated factors; (3) use of validated tools. We performed a narrative synthesis. Results: After screening 8585 records, 368 full text articles were independently checked and finally 24 studies were included for qualitative analysis. The included studies surveyed 20,000 doctors from 12 European countries. The tools and scales used in the analyzed research to measure physician satisfaction varied to a large extent. We extracted all pre-specified factors, reported as statistically significant/non-significant. Analyzed factors were divided into three groups: personal, intrinsic and contextual factors. The majority of factors are modifiable and positively associated with characteristics of contextual factors, such as work-place setting/work environment. In the group of work-place related factors, quality of management/leadership, opportunity for professional development and colleague support have been deemed statistically significant in numerous studies. Conclusions: We identified more studies appraising the effect of contextual factors (such as work environment, work-place characteristics), highlighting a positive association between those factors and physician satisfaction, compared with personal and intrinsic factors. Numerous studies confirmed statistically significant associations between physician satisfaction and quality of management, professional development and colleague support/team climate. Due to the health workforce crisis, knowledge regarding physician satisfaction and associated factors is essential to healthcare managers and policy makers for more stable human resources management.

This study provides an analysis of further professional education of university teachers in the Czech Republic and in selected European countries. Subsequently, it presents an international project with participants from the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Slovakia and Poland, which, ultimately, plays a role in the improvement of the quality of higher education.

Background: A greater understanding of the everyday experiences of people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and their carers may help improve clinical practice. Objective: The Parkinson’s Real-world Impact assesSMent (PRISM) study evaluated medication use, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the use of healthcare resources by people with PD and their carers. Methods: PRISM is an observational cross-sectional study, in which people with PD and their carers completed an online survey using structured questionnaires, including the Parkinson’s Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire (PDQ-39), Non-Motor Symptoms Questionnaire (NMSQuest) and Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI). Results: Data were collected from 861 people with PD (mean age, 65.0 years; mean disease duration, 7.7 years) and 256 carers from six European countries. People with PD reported a large number of different co-morbidities, non-motor symptoms (mean NMSQuest score, 12.8), and impaired HRQoL (median PDQ-39 summary score, 29.1). Forty-five percent of people with PD reported at least one impulse control behaviour. Treatment patterns varied considerably between different European countries. Levodopa was taken in the last 12 months by 85.9% of participants, and as monotherapy by 21.8% . Carers, who were mostly female (64.8%) and the partner/spouse of the person with PD (82.1%), reported mild to moderate burden (mean ZBI total score, 26.6). Conclusions: The PRISM study sheds light on the lives of people with PD and those who care for them, re-emphasising the many challenges they face in everyday life. The study also provides insights into the current treatment of PD in Europe.

The evaluation of the work performance of health professionals has focused the interest of scientific research in recent decades as a basis for improving the quality of health services. The global COVID-19 pandemic has pushed countries’ health systems to the limit and had previously unknown consequences on the job performance of health professionals. In this context, what are the determinants of performance? There are numerous studies that link job performance with other variables that directly affect it, such as leadership, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and work environment. However, there are no studies that jointly relate all these variables, and even less in the field of health. The main objective of this work is to analyse how these variables are configured together to generate a good level of performance of health professionals during the times of COVID-19. To do this, a fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) is carried out, an appropriate method that will allow finding the joint causal effects of key variables in human resources to ensure a good level of job performance in health organizations. The study reveals that leadership and commitment are the two key drivers of performance. The data confirm that the “recipe” to achieve a good level of performance consists of the combination of leadership, commitment, and a good work environment. Additionally, in the case of less satisfied workers, linking leadership and commitment is a sufficient condition.

Maintaining security is one of public tasks that determine the quality of life of the population. This issue is the subject of much debate both social and political. An in-depth assessment of the situation requires a variety of analyzes, significant from the point of view of the implementation of appropriate, effective strategy to increase the sense of security among citizens. The aim of the paper is to compare the state of public safety in selected European countries. The study was conducted based on Eurostat data from the years 2005–2011.

The COVID-19 pandemic reflects in an intense and complex way in social, economic and cultural processes globally, also due to its sanitary nature in the work environment, a phenomenon that impacts and can have repercussions on workers' health. The general objective of this article was to analyze the influence that the pandemic scenario has on the mental health of professionals working in the health area, taking into account their work, quality of life and satisfaction with the organization. The methodology selected for the research was descriptive, qualitative, classified as a bibliographic research, in which the following descriptors were applied: satisfaction and quality of life in the work context, selecting academic sources of information that responded to the proposed objectives and that presented in the context of the pandemic. The results point to the fact that teams from healthcare organizations can be more affected in the context of the scenario, such as the nurses' class. It is portrayed that these professionals are doubly affected by the pandemic, in their work environment, while occupying the front line in the fight against the virus, and in their personal life, when they face the effects of social isolation, the absence of schools as partners, financial insecurity and related issues. Thus, it is concluded that the satisfaction and quality of life in the work environment was significantly affected by the pandemic, contributing to the development even psychological suffering in various spheres, including work stress, especially in environments where professionals from health.

Background: The Magnet hospital is the hospital that implements specific organizational attributes in order to achieve a high quality of care through well-qualified and committed nursing staff.Aim of the study: The study was aimed at studying attributes of the Magnetic work environment, and its relation to work stress among nursing staff.Methods: Setting: It was carried out in the children’s cancer hospital, Egypt. Design: Using a descriptive correlational design. Subjects: Consisted of 172 nursing staff. Tools and procedure: two different self-administered tools were utilized (Magnet attributes questionnaire, and stress questionnaire). The fieldwork lasted from April to July 2016.Results: The study revealed that the highest percentage of nursing staff aged between 20 and 30 years. Nearly two thirds (64%) were having a bachelor degree in nursing. Total attributes of work environment were available with strength. 96.6% of nursing staff recorded low scores of stress.Conclusions: The nursing staff in the study setting considered “total attributes of Magnet work environment” as an area of strength. The total scores of stress were generally low. Statistically significant negative correlations were revealed between the scores of total Magnet attributes and stress.Recommendations: It is a matter of priority for Egyptian children’s cancer hospital to enhance and promote the development and maintenance of Magnetism and taking the lead in promoting the status of Magnetism in Egypt.

Abstract : The complex IGD work environment will affect the quality of care, health care, including inaccurate or incomplete documentation. Incomplete nursing documentation indicates that the nursing care process is not working properly and continuously. Intentionin documenting can predict the appearance of person behavior including the behavior of nurses, especially in documenting nursing care. The purpose of this study was to analyze correlation intention with nurse behavior in documenting nursing care in Emergency Installation. The research design used correlational analysis with cross sectional approach. The sample in this research is part of nurse of executing at IGD Rumkit TK II dr Soepraoen, IGD RS Panti Waluya Sawahan and IGD RS Islam Malang. The sample of 45 nurses IGD and 341 documents were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The result of statistical analysis of gamma that there is a significant correlation between intention and nursing documentation behavior evidenced by value of p = 0,000, positive correlation direction and strong correlation value is proved by r = 0,739. Hospital and nurse IGD is expected to develop a good intention then formed good nursing documenting behavior as well.Keywords : Nurse IGD, Intention, Nursing Documentation. Abstrak: Lingkungan kerja IGD yang kompleks akan mempengaruhi kualitas perawatan, pelayanan kesehatan, termasuk dokumentasi yang dilakukan tidak tepat atau tidak lengkap. Dokumentasi keperawatan yang tidak lengkap menunjukkan proses asuhan keperawatan tidak berjalan dengan baik dan berkesinambungan. Intensi dalam pendokumentasian dapat memprediksi munculnya perilaku seseorang termasuk perilaku perawat khususnya dalam pendokumentasian asuhan keperawatan. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menganalis hubungan intensi dengan perilaku perawat dalam pendokumentasian asuhan keperawatan di Instalasi Gawat Darurat. Desain penelitian menggunakan analysis correlationaldengan pendekatan cross sectional. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah sebagian perawat pelaksana di IGD Rumkit TK II dr Soepraoen, IGD RS Panti Waluya Sawahan Malang dan IGD RS Islam Malang. Sampel berjumlah 45 perawat IGD dan 341 dokumen dipilih sesuai dengan kriteria inklusi dan ekslusi. Hasil analisis statistik uji gammamenunjukkan terdapat hubungan signifikan antara intensi dengan perilaku pendokumentasian keperawatan dibuktikan dengan nilai p = 0,000, arah korelasi positif, dan nilai korelasi kuat dibuktikan dengan nilai r = 0,739. Rumah Sakit dan perawat IGD diharapkan mengembangkan intensi yang baik sehingga diharapkan terbentuk perilaku pendokumentasian keperawatan yang baik pula. Kata Kunci : Perawat IGD, Intensi, Dokumentasi Keperawatan.
