Pharmacological Evaluation of Saccharum Officinarum Linn. as Anti-ulcer Agent

The purpose of the study was to elucidate the antiulcer activity of stem of Saccharum Officinarum (Poaceae) in albino rats against aspirin induced gastric ulcer, ethanol induced gastric ulcer and pylorus ligation induced gastric ulcer models. Groups of rats were fasted overnight, received ranitidine (20 mg/kg) as a standard and plant stem juice extract at dose of 0.75 mL/100 gm and 1.5 mL/100 gm as a treatment against aspirin induced gastric ulcer, ethanol induced gastric ulcer and pylorus ligation induced gastric ulcer. The treatment produced significant protection of ulcer induced by aspirin, ethanol and pylorus ligation induced ulcer. The extract also reduced ulcer index, volume of gastric content, free and total acidity, suggesting that extract possesses significant anti-ulcer activity.

Annona reticulate (AR) is indigenous to the tropical areas of India and worldwide. The use of plant as remedy for diarrhea and ulcer is well documented in Ayurvedic system of medicine. However, pharmacological evidence does not exist to substantiate its therapeutic efficacy for the same. The aim was to investigate the antiulcer and anti-diarrheal activity of methanolic (ME) and aqueous extracts (AE) of A. reticulate in animal model. The antiulcer activity of extracts was investigated using ethanol and pylorus ligation-induced ulcer. The anti-diarrheal activity of MEAR and AEAR extracts was evaluated by castor oil induced diarrhea and gastro intestinal motility using parameters such as onset of diarrhea, number of wet stools, total number of stool and weight of total number of stools. The antiulcer activity of the extracts was confirmed by a reduction in ulcer index along with the decrease in gastric volume, total acidity, and an increase in pH of gastric content in both the models. A. reticulate extracts were more efficacious in reducing number of total stools in both the models of diarrhea and showed a dose-dependent antidiarrheal effect. The obtained results have established a pharmacological evidence for the folkloric use of the A. reticulate as antiulcer and antidiarrhoeal agent.

Objective: To evaluate the curative protects activity of electrohomeopathic drug Cancerous15 (C15) against Indomethacin (IND)-induced gastric ulcer in albino rats. None of the data have been reported on antiulcer activity of C15 drug. Hence, the present study focuses on the scientific investigation of antiulcer activity of C15 against Indomethacin-induced peptic ulceration of rat models. Methods: A total number of 35 albino rats were divided into five groups equally. Pure water was given to Group 1 (normal). IND was given orally to Group 2 (ulcerated control). Cancerous15 third dilution was given to Group 3. IND was given to Group 4 and Group 5 animals, thereafter pretreatment with Esomeprazole (ESM) and C15-third dilution, respectively. The pretreatments were treated in each day’s interval for 21 days before IND administration. There was provision of food and water throughout the experimental period. On the 23rd day, the stomachs of the sacrificed rats were removed, and (1) ulcer index, (2) percentage of ulcer inhibition, (3) gastric volume, (4) pH, (5) pepsin activity, (6) mucin content, (7) malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, and (8) stearidonic acid activity were studied. Results: The pre-treated animals with ESM and C15 shown as significantly decreases in ulcer index, gastric volume, pepsin activity and MDA concentration, and significant increase in the percentage ulcer inhibition, pH value, mucin content, and superoxide dismutase activity concentration in comparison to ulcer-induced rats. Conclusion: The study shows the significant ulcer protective activity of the C15 drug against IND-induced peptic ulceration in rats.

Background: Gastric ulcer is one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal disorders, which affects approximately 5-10% of people during their life. In recent years, abundant work has been carried out on herbal medicine to clarify their potential efficacy in gastric ulcer prevention or management. The present study was carried out to evaluate the antiulcer activity of the methanolic root extract of Berberis lycium in albino rats. Method: The methanolic root extract of Berberis lycium was prepared by hot extraction method. Anti-ulcer activity was evaluated and method employed was pylorus ligation and ethanol induced in albino rats. Preliminary methanolic extract of Berberis lycium was subjected to the acute oral toxicity study according to the OECD guideline no. 425. Animals were divided into four groups of six animals each. The animals of Group I served as normal control (vehicle) which received distilled water. Group II and III received 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg of methanolic root extract, respectively. In pylorus ligation induced ulcer model, various parameters were studied viz. gastric volume, pH, total acidity, free acidity, and ulcer index. Ulcer index and percentage inhibition of ulceration was determined for ethanol induced ulcer model. Group IV received Ranitidine at 50 mg/kg was used as the standard drug. Pretreatment of methanol root extract of Berberis lycium showed significant (P˂0.05) decrease in the gastric volume, total acidity and free acidity. However, pH of the gastric juice was significantly increased only at higher dose 500 mg/kg. It showed also significant (P˂0.05) decrease in number of ulcers and ulcer score index in pylorus ligation and ethanol induced ulceration models. Results: The methanol root extract of Berberis lycium showed a significant reduction in the total acidity, free acidity and acid volume. The efficacy of plant extract at high dose was comparable with the standard drug Ranitidine. Conclusion: Our study results support the ethnomedical use of root of Berberis lycium. Background: To evaluate the antiulcer activity of ethanolic leaves extract of Saraca indica against ethanol, pylorus ligature and indomethacin in albino rats. Materials and Methods: Ulcer was produced by ethanol, pylorus ligature and indomethacin in albino rats. Five groups (n=6) of rats were orally pre-treated with carboxymethyl cellulose solution, and ranitidine (80 mg/kg) respectively. In ethanol induced ulcer, the animals were treated with 200 and 400 mg/kg b.w. ethanolic leave extracts of Saraca indica in 0.3% CMC solution, 60 minutes before oral administration of absolute ethanol to produce gastric mucosal injury. In indomethacin induced ulcer, the drug was administered orally at the dose of 30 mg/kg b.w. After 7-9 hours of administration of indomethacin (30 mg/kg); the animals were sacrificed with high doses of anesthesia. In the pylorus ligature method, volume of free acidity, gastric secretion, pH and total acidity were estimated. In all three models, the ulcer index and % protection were estimated. Results: The anti ulcer activity of ethanolic leave extracts of Saraca indica in ethanol, indomethacin and pylorus ligature models is evident from the significant (P<0.001) reduction in ulcer index. In pylorus ligature model, significant (P<0.001) reduction in total acidity gastric volume and increase in pH were observed when compared with the standard drug. Conclusion: Ethanolic leave extracts of Saraca indica were found to be significantly protective against ethanol, indomethacin and pylorus ligature induced gastric ulcers in the experimental albino rats. The result obtained suggest that ethanolic leave extracts of Saraca indica possesses significant anti-ulcer activity.

Anogeissus pendula Edgew has been reported to be used in gastric disorder even though no attempt has been made to evaluate the same. The present study was designed to evaluate the hydroalcoholic extracts of stem bark and leaves for in vivo acute antiulcer and anti-inflammatory activities. Antiulcer activity was studied by pylorus ligation induced ulcers while anti-inflammatory activities was studied by carrageenan induced paw edema. The extract of stem bark at 200 and 400 mg/kg b. w., significantly (P<0.05) reduced ulcer index whereas extracts of both stem bark and leaves significantly (P<0.001) reduced paw diameter at the fifth hour. The hydroalcholic extract of stem bark of A. pendula possesses more significant antiulcer and anti-inflammatory activity than the hydroalcholic extract of leaves may be due to the presence of higher amount of phenolic compounds.

Background: Beta vulgaris (chenopodiacea) is a plant reported for its variety of ethnic medicinal uses. Hence we have planned to screen anti ulcer activity of root of the plant with the alcoholic extract. Root powders successively extracted with alcohol and were subjected for phytochemical screening to identify different phytoconstituents.Methods: Anti ulcer activity was evaluated in various animal models like pylorus ligation and ethanol induced ulcer models in rats.Results: Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, carbohydrates, saponins, polyphenols. No mortality was observed with root extract up to maximum dose level of 4g/kg. Further alcoholic extract of 200 and 400mg/ kg / p.o significantly (p˂0.01) reduced the ulcer score, ulcer number, ulcer index, free acidity and total acidity in pylorus ligation and ethanol induced ulcer models in rats.Conclusions: The present study revealed that the root extract of Beta vulgaris has antiulcer activity.

Albizzia procera belongs to family Fabaceae and has several phytoconstituents like flavonoids, terpenes, alkaloids, saponins etc. The plant is commonly used in traditional medicines. The objective of the present study was to assess the ameliorative effect of A. procera leaves extract against an experimentally induced gastric ulcer in albino rats. The antiulcer, antisecretory and cytoprotective properties of an ethanolic extract prepared from the leaves was evaluated. When given in a 200 mg/kg oral (per. os) dose, the extract produced 74% and 85% protection index in ethanol-induced ulcer model and pylorus ligation model, respectively.  Additionally, the extract also prohibited the formation of haemorrhage and edema, significantly lessened catalase activity (p<0.0001) and the lipid peroxidation level (p<0.0001) in the glandular tissue of Wistar albino rats. Furthermore, the extract also significantly diminished the total acidity(p<0.0001) of the gastric fluid by increasing its pH (p<0.0001). The occupancy of different phytoconstituents in the extract, such as flavonoids and tannins were identified that may be responsible for its gastro-protective activity. All these results provide a basis explaining the antiulcer ability of A. procera being useful in the management of gastric ulcers.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate antiulcer activity of 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde against NSAIDs induced ulcer in rats based differences in its morphology, distance with other external landmarks and also to sigmoid and transverse sinuses.Methods: The antiulcer activity of 4-HBD was evaluated using pylorus ligation-aspirin induced ulcer method. Animals of this models were treated with 4-HBD (50mg/kg, 100mg/kg and 150mg/kg).Results: It has been observed that 4-HBD at low dose (50mg/kg), intermediate dose (100mg/kg) and high dose (150mg/kg) showed significant increase in pH, significant decrease in gastric volume, significant decrease in ulcer index and significant decrease in total acidity.Conclusions: The impact of 4-HBD therapy with intermediate (100mg/kg, p.o.) dose was observed to be similar with the positive control group.

Peptic ulcer is a condition which results from an imbalance between offensive and defensive factors of gastrointestinal system. The investigation was designed to evaluate the antiulcer activity of Symplocos racemosa whole plant methanol extract (MESR) in rat model of indomethacininduced gastric ulceration. The total acidity, gastric volume, pH and free acidity were measured to determine the anti-ulcer activity of MESR. Pretreatment with MESR (125-500 mg/kg) markedly reduced the indomethacin-induced increase in gastric ulcer index and score. These results revealed that antisecretory effects MESR were responsible for antiulcer activity of MESR.
