Background: For a highly contagious disease like COVID-19, restriction of movement and public gatherings is an age-old control measure. But these measures can have some physical and psychological impact on people. This study aimed at investigating the impact of such restrictions on the physical activities (PA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) of students at a medical college in Kozhikode. The objective was to find out the changes in PA and SB among the medical students at government medical college, Kozhikode before and after COVID-19 restrictions.Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted using modified WHO GPAQ questionnaire sent as google form to potential candidates through whatsapp messenger. Collected data were analysed using Microsoft excel software and statistical comparison was done using the paired t test. Quantitative data was expressed as mean and SD and qualitative data as percentage.Results: The average BMI of the candidates was 21.1 kg/m2 and 21.7 kg/m2 pre and post COVID-19 restrictions, respectively. The PA was 1790.2 and 1445.4 MET minutes before and after the period of study. There is significant reduction in PA (p=0.033) and increment in SB (p<0.01). Weight gain was significant in females (p=0.02).Conclusions: There was decline in the total PA and increase in SB significantly post restriction. There was also an increase in the self-reported weight and BMI of medical students. Almost half of the students made effort to change their physical activity pattern indicating their awareness of increasing SB.

Abstract Background On the 27th of March 2020 the Zimbabwean government declared the Covid-19 pandemic a ‘national disaster’. Travel restrictions and emergency regulations have had significant impacts on maternity services, including resource stock-outs, and closure of antenatal clinics during the lockdown period. Estimates of the indirect impact of Covid-19 on maternal and perinatal mortality was expected it to be considerable, but little data was yet available. This study aimed to examine the impact of Covid-19 and lockdown control measures on non-Covid outcomes in a government tertiary level maternity unit in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, by comparing maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality before, and after the lockdown was implemented. Methods This was a retrospective, observational study, using a cross-sectional design to compare routine monthly maternal and perinatal statistics three months before and after Covid-19 emergency measures were implemented at Mpilo Central Hospital. Results Between January-March and April-June 2020, the mean monthly deliveries reduced from 747.3 (SD ± 61.3) in the first quarter of 2020 to 681.0 (SD ± 17.6) during lockdown, but this was not statistically significant, p = 0.20. The Caesarean section rates fell from a mean of 29.8% (SD ± 1.7) versus 28.0% (SD ± 1.7), which was also not statistically significant, p = 0.18. During lockdown, the percentage of women delivering at Mpilo Central Hospital who were booked at the hospital fell from a mean of 41.6% (SD ± 1.1) to 35.8% (SD ± 4.3) which was statistically significant, p = 0.03. There was no significant change, however, in maternal mortality or severe maternal morbidity (such as post-partum haemorrhage (PPH), uterine rupture, and severe preeclampsia/eclampsia), stillbirth rate or special care baby unit admission. There was an increase in the mean total number of early neonatal deaths (ENND) (mean 18.7 (SD ± 2.9) versus 24.0 (SD ± 4.6), but this was not statistically significant, p = 0.32. Conclusions Overall, maternity services at Mpilo showed resilience during the lockdown period, with no significant change in maternal and perinatal adverse outcomes, with the same number of man-hours worked before and during the lockdown Maternal and perinatal outcomes should continue to be monitored to assess the impact of Covid-19 and the lockdown measures as the pandemic in Zimbabwe unfolds. Further studies would be beneficial to explore women’s experiences and understand how bookings and deliveries at local clinics changed during this time.

Background: The medical college library plays an important role in enhancing theacademic achievements of medical students. In order to improve the quality oflibrary services this study provided an assessment of the impact of the libraryservices on undergraduate medical student learning behavior. Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive type of study. Thestudy used a self-designed questionnaire. The study sample was 200 undergraduatemedical students. The questionnaire was administered to them at the end of theirlecture class. Results: The primary reason for going to the library was self study (68%) refer text(37%) and group study (36%). Only 38.55% of the respondents visited the library ona daily basis, 50.5% students visit library when necessary and 10.5% student uselibrary 2-3 times a week. All students (100%) are aware about availability of textbooks in the library. 60.5% students know that journals are available in their library,52% know about dictionaries, 56.55% know of having internet, 62.5% students knowthat computers are available in library. 46.5% students said that their internet ofinstitutional library is somewhat helpful. Noise (67.5%), insufficient space (66%),lack of interent access (46%) and lack of computers(44.5%) might have negativeinfluence on the students in library visit. Conclusion :The study suggested that fulfillment of more needs to be done topromote self directed learning. The usage of library, its resources and services needto be increased. Objectives: The Medical Council of India has introduced competency based medical education (CBME) for all the undergraduate medical students across the country. We conducted this study to assess the impact of new curriculum on students’ performance and the differential time utilization of the teaching faculty. Materials and Methods: It is a cross-sectional study conducted at ESIC Medical College and PGIMSR, Bengaluru during January to March 2020. The college has an intake of 100 under-graduate students for an academic year. The sources of data included internal marks of the students and a semi-structured questionnaire for teaching faculty. Results: The mean (range) marks obtained by the students of 2018-19 and 2019-20 batch were found to be (a) theory: 48.75 (7 to 83) and 50.71 (10 to 78) (b) practical’s: 64.88 (38 to 90) and 69.70 (30 to 93). The man hours per week-faculty for different teaching activities during 2018-19 and 2019-20 were as follows: (a) theory teaching: 6 (16%) (b) practical teaching: 12 (32%) (c) research activities: 6 (16%) (d) planning activities: 8 (21%) (e) administrative activities: 6 (16%). Conclusion: The newer MBBS curriculum is found to be promising for the medical students but it is taking a huge toll on the teaching faculty. Measures to promote research and faculty strength in the existing medical colleges should be prioritized by policy makers.

COVID-19 has spread throughout the world and has resulted in significant morbidity, mortality, and negative psychological impact. This prospective cross-sectional study is exploring the effect of the pandemic on mental health of medical students. The study was conducted at six Jordanian medical schools using an online survey to collect students’ socio-demographic and academic data. Assessment of mental wellbeing status was done using Kessler’s psychological stress scale (K10); the impact of COVID-19 on life activities and strategies followed to manage the situation were also examined. A total of 553 medical students were recruited for the study. Men constituted 40.1%, and women were 59.9%. Students reported that COVID-19 has affected the aspects of physical fitness (73.1%), study (68.4%), and social relationships (65.6%) the most. Sixty-six percent of the students were concerned about family members’ affection, and more than half (58.4%) explained their concerns about the inability to get clinical sessions and labs. Cooking, baking, and hobby practicing were the most popular methods to improve their mental wellbeing. About half of the participants had a severe mental disorder, and only 13.2% were likely to be well. The study indicates that half of our medical students suffer severe mental disorders, with physical fitness, exercise, and studying being among the most affected aspects during the COVID 19 pandemic. It is recommended that measures need be taken to alleviate students’ stress, which might have deleterious effects in many aspects.

Background: Endometriosis refers to the presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity. About 10% causes of infertility are due to endometriosis. In women Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) level represents the ovarian follicular pool and has been suggested as the most reliable and reproducible marker to asses ovarian reserve. The gold standard approach of management of endometriosis with subfertility is laparoscopy. The objectives of this stydy are evaluation of AMH levels as a marker of ovarian reserve in subfertile patients with different stages of pelvic endometriosis, and correlate it with laparoscopic surgery.Methods: This was a cross sectional observational study on 59 subfertile patients from January 2014 to January 2017 in Anwer Khan Modern Medical College Hospital (AKMMCH). Main outcome measured on the basis of measurement of AMH levels in correlation with the age, types of subfertility, stages of endometriosis, unilateral or bilateral ovarian involvement, size of the cyst, number of the cyst and the impact of different procedures during laparoscopy on AMH levels.Results: Basal AMH levels significantly lower (p= 0.011 and p =0.001) before and after laparoscopy in primary subfertile patients than secondary subfertile patients and AMH significantly decreased (P<0.024) after laparoscopy in primary subfertile patients. AMH level significantly decreased (P<.001) after laparoscopic surgery of two ovaries. Mean serum AMH levels were decreased in moderate and severe stages of endometriosis after laparoscopy (3.01±.04 ng/ml and 2.15±.03ng/ml). Different surgical procedures of laparoscopy showed significant impact on serum AMH levels, in thermal cauterization (p=0.023) and excision plus cauterization (p=0.001) showed significant decreased of AMH.Conclusion: Serum AMH level decreased in many patients after laparoscopy to such an extent from where future fertility is possible.Birdem Med J 2018; 8(1): 30-34

Aim: To understand the psychological impact of COVID – 19 on Medical Students of a private sector Medical University in Karachi, Pakistan. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted among medical students studying at Hamdard College of Medicine and Dentistry, Karachi, Pakistan. The data collection was done through online survey from July 2020 to December 2020. The study aimed to gather data from many medical students. A total number of 420 students were participated from Hamdard College of Medicine and Dentistry in Karachi, Pakistan. The participants were selected from all years of MBBS and BDS programs . Results: Out of 420 participants, 236 (56.2%) were male and 184 (43.8%) female, with a male:female ration of 1.28:1. Majority of participants were single as 411 (97.9%), of 224 (53.3%) students living with their family, 150 (35.7%) in hostel and 46 (11%) living with friends. In our sample 369 (87.9%) students studying in MBBS program while only 51 (12.1%) BDS, among those 80 (19%) medical students were in first year, followed by 122 (29%) second year, 65 (15.5%) third year, 54 (12.9%) fourth year and 99 (23.6%) studying in final year. IES-R scale and results shows 75 (17.9%) reported that PTSD is a clinical concern, probable diagnosis of PTSD 28 (6.7%) and majority rated as high enough to PTSD 133 (31.7%). Impact of event (revised) scale shows significant association with age and year of study with p value 0.026 and 0.002 respectively. Based on the PHQ9 scale, Gender, Living arrangements and the program enrolled in were reported significant association with depression p values 0.059, 0.008 and 0.006 respectively. Conclusion: Findings suggests high rate of anxiety, depression, and signs of PTSD in medical students due to COVID-19 which needs pressing attention and provision of professional help from mental health practitioners. Background: Acne Vulgaris is a rife and chronic dermal disorder, which commonly occurs in pubescent. This disease is characterized by the emergence of comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, or cysts which results from obstruction and inflammation of pilosebaceous units. Objective: To finding out the prevalence and psychological impact of acne on the quality of life in undergraduate medical students of Lahore, Pakistan. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted during the month of October 2020, 291 among undergraduate medical students from eight medical colleges of Lahore, selected through simple random sampling, on both male and female undergraduate medical students. To assist them; they were given a simple grading criterion to self-diagnose their current acne severity and quality of life was evaluated by Cardiff Acne Disability Index. Data were analyzed by using SPSS version 22. Results: A total of 213 (73.2%) prevalence of acne was found among the participants who responded (291). No significant relation between acne severity and gender was found (p=0.151). There was no association between CADI score and gender (p=0.366). However, a significant correlation was found between CADI score and acne severity (p=0.000). In the population studied, 4.7% showed their acne severely impacting their quality of life, 27.7% have moderate, 58.7% have mild and 8.9% have no impact at all. Conclusion: High Prevalence rate of acne and its significant negative impact on QOL indicates that it is a very common dermatological disorder. Effective interventions can make substantial contributions to derogate the impact of acne severity on QOL.

Background: The objectives of the study were to identify the psychological impact of lockdown on medical students due to COVID-19 and to discover the educational perplexities being faced by these students during the lockdown due to COVID-19. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Medical College (SSRMC), Mauritius. Questions were designed after extensive review of the literature, so that they were relevant to meet the objectives of the study. Results: Out of 700 undergraduate medical students, 663 students participated in the study, this equates to a substantial response rate of 95%. Due to the pandemic 348 (52.5 %) of the students were stationed in their hometown and the remaining 315 (47.5 %) were stationed in Mauritius. 464(70%) of the students suffered from the psychological impact of lockdown whereas 634(95.6%) of the students suffered from the educational impact of lockdown. Mauritian students suffered from a greater educational impact aOR4.236[1.606-11.173]. Psychological impact aOR 1.280 [0.917-1.789] and educational impact aOR 2.464 [1.076-5.647] was found more in students those who were at their hometown. Conclusion: Lockdown triggered both educational and psychological impact on medical students. On a psychological basis it was proven that the lockdown induced a feeling of guilt and had subsequent psychological impacts in certain students. The COVID-19 situation was simultaneously indicated to be a motivator in the majority of students; however, juxtaposed to this was the fact that various students felt as if they could not study at the same level that they are accustomed to due to the uncertainty of the situation.

ObjectivesTo evaluate the impact of the first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 on the burnout and study satisfaction of medical students.DesignA cross-sectional study with a presurvey and postsurvey.SettingUniversity of Split School of Medicine (USSM), Split, Croatia. The lockdown in the COVID-19 pandemic lasted from late March to mid-May 2020. There was a full switch to e-learning at the USSM during this period, and all clinical teaching was stopped.ParticipantsStudents enrolled in the 2019/2020 academic year. Data were collected before lockdown in December 2019 and January 2020 and again after the end of lockdown in June 2020.Primary and secondary outcome measuresStudy satisfaction was assessed using the study satisfaction survey. Burnout was assessed using two instruments: Oldenburg Burnout Inventory and Copenhagen Burnout Inventory. We used Bayesian statistics to compare before-and-after differences.Results437 independent responses (77.2% response rate) were collected before and 235 after lockdown (41.5% response rate). 160 participant responses were eligible for pairing. There was no significant difference for both paired and unpaired participants in study satisfaction before (3.38 on a 1–5 scale; 95% credible interval (95% CrI) 3.32 to 3.44) and after (3.49, 95% CrI 3.41 to 3.57) lockdown. We found no evidence (Bayes factor (BF10) >3.00 as a cut-off value) for an increase in the level of burnout before and after lockdown, both in independent and paired samples.ConclusionsIt seems that the first pandemic-related lockdown and a switch to e-learning did not affect burnout levels among medical students or their perception of their study programme. More insight is needed on the short-term and long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on medical students and their education. Well-structured longitudinal studies on medical student burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic are needed.

Objectives: Professionalism has garnered immense attention in medical education due to increased societal accountability and focus on excellence in healthcare. However, less attention has been given to identifying attitudes about professionalism in medical students who are the future advocates of the healthcare system. This study aimed to assess perceptions of Saudi undergraduate medical students towards professionalism. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out among 2nd- and 6th-year students of a Saudi medical college in September of 2018. A self-administered professionalism questionnaire was anonymously completed. Students were asked to provide their level of agreement with 18 survey items using a 5-point Likert scale. Results: Overall, 288 students participated in the study (49.3% males and 50.7% females), with a response rate of 90%. The median professionalism score was high (71.0; range: 64-76) regardless of age, gender, or level of education. Similar high scores were noted in the following subscales: Excellence, 20.0 (18, 21); Respect for Others, 17.0 (14, 18); Altruism, 12.0 (10, 13); Duty, 8.0 (7, 9); Accountability, 7.0 (6, 8); and Honor and Integrity, 8.0 (7, 10). No gender differences were observed in the majority of subscales. However, males demonstrated higher scores in the Duty subscale (9.0 vs. 8.0; P = 0.026). Conclusion: Medical students demonstrated high professionalism scores. Future studies are needed to assess the impact of the course curriculum on their level of professionalism over time.
