Samer-2 is an undoubted leader in terms of attractiveness as a feed plant both in particular years and on average during the study years. A lower pest population, even in a year with a high number of pests, was shown by Cordoba variety. The rest of the studied varieties can be attributed to medium level of feed preference for cotton budworm. The observed pattern can presumably be explained by the difference in chemical composition of different varieties of soybean, which should be confirmed by further research, as well as by density of soybean plants. The best varieties in terms of protein content in our studies were Prudence, Alaska and Protina; the latter variety does not consistently accumulate this protein, which depends on weather conditions and other factors. The lowest grain moisture was shown by Alaska soybean variety, the agrocenosis of which had a low plant density. And conversely, the wettest grain had Samer-2 variety with a high number of plants per 1 m2. On average, over three years of observation, the best and consistently high yield was shown by Cordoba variety, due to, for one of the reasons, high resistance to damage by the cotton budworm. An opposite situation was observed for Protina and Samer-2 variants, a significant number of caterpillars of the studied phytophage led to a substantial yield decrease of these varieties, especially in the year favorable for development of this pest. Prudence and Alaska variants can be classified as medium-suppressed varieties with medium yields. To obtain a stable phytosanitary situation and obtain high-quality soybean crop, it is more expedient to cultivate Cordoba (high-yield) and Prudence (high-protein) varieties, with application of Biosleep BV, Zh insecticide (4 l / ha) for effective protection against cotton budworm.

Phenotypic plasticity of agricultural plants is considered to be one of the main means by which plants cope with the variability of environmental factors. A major contributor to plant plasticity is sowing density, which has a relevant impact on competitive intensity concerning  plant density in different environments (CI) and absolute severity of competition (ASC) concerning plant-plant responses to each other in canopy. A field experiment with soybean was set up at the Experimental Station in Prusy, Krakow, to determine the impact of intraspecific competition on growth, plant architecture, nitrogen accumulation, and yield of soybean as an effect of  seven different plant densities and weather conditions. The study showed that intraspecific competition in soybean was conditioned by sowing density and access to water, thus revealing the true plant productive potential. Low intraspecific competition increased with plant density causing an increase in the yield of plants. In the wet year of 2014, strong intraspecific competition resulted in high yield and nitrogen accumulation only up to a density of 42 plants m-2, compared to dry years when nitrogen uptake of soybean increased with plant density in full range. The CI and ASC competition indices were sensitive to the varying amount of rainfall. Greater rainfall during crop vegetation increased the intensity of competition as well as the absolute severity of competition and decreased the relative yield with increasing density. In contrast, drought reduced intraspecific competition, eliminating it entirely at over 52 plants m-2.

From the aspect of the efficiency of maize production harvest grain moisture content shall be considered beside the amount of harvested grain yield. Hybrids with different genotypes and vegetation period length lose their moisture content different that is affected by row spacing and plant density – among agrotechnical production factors – depending on the given crop year. In the present research work three crop years with different weather conditions were studied (2013, 2014, and 2015). The small-plot field experiment was set up at the Látókép Field Research Centre of the University of Debrecen, Centre for Agricultural Sciences with four replications on a chernozem soil type. The effect of three factors was analysed in the experiment on yield amount and its moisture content. Factors were row spacing (45 and 76 cm), plant density (50, 70 and 90 thousand plants ha-1), while hybrids were of very early (Sarolta: FAO 290), early (DKC 4014: FAO 320, P 9175: FAO 330, P 9494: FAO 390) and medium (SY Afinity: FAO 470) ripening. In the crop year of 2013 the highest yield was produced – regarding the average of the hybrids – by the application of a row spacing of 45 cm (4.5%, 673 kg ha-1), however there was no significant difference between the yield of the populations of different row spacings. Significant difference (14.9%, 1751 kg ha-1; 6.3%, 583 kg ha-1) could be found in case of yield between different row spacing applications in 2014 and 2015. The effect of insufficiently distributed low amount of precipitation and lasting heat days in 2015 could be revealed in yield amounts and harvest grain yield moisture content results that were lower than in the previous years. In 2015 grain yield moisture content varied between 10.3 and 13.9% in case of a row spacing of 45 cm, while by 76 cm between 11.0 and 13.9%.

Abstract. The purpose of the research is to study the influence of the method and term of harvesting on seed yield, yield structure, sowing qualities of seeds in the harvest of Eastern galega Gale and meadow tetraploid clover Kudesnik. Research methods. The field experimentation and the generalization of research results were performed in accordance with the requirements of methodology of experimental work. The analysis of sowing qualities of the obtained seed material was carried out in accordance with GOST 12038-84 and GOST 12042-80. Results. It was established that in dry weather during harvesting on aligned seed grass stand of perennial leguminous grasses, the main method is single-phase harvesting. This method contributed to the production of 288–299 kg/ha of Eastern galega Gale goat seeds (1995–1999) and 116–120 kg/ha of meadow tetraploid clover Kudesnik seeds (2013–2016). In wet years with high biomass of herbs, it is advisable to use single-phase harvesting with preliminary desiccation. A relatively high yield of galega seeds 331 kg/ha was obtained during desiccation of the grass stand, during the formation of the grass stand with the plant density – 51 pcs/m2, the number of beans on the stem – 47 pcs., the seeds in the bean – 1.77 pcs. The formation of the highest seed yield of meadow tetraploid clover 152 kg/ha during desiccation of crops occurred in connection with an increase in the number of seeds in the head to 9 pcs. and the mass of seeds in the head to 0.023 g. Desiccation of the seed grass stand of perennial grasses contributed to an increase in laboratory germination of the obtained galega seeds to 94 % and a mass of 1000 seeds to 7.55 g, meadow clover to 91 % and 2.53 g, respectively. Scientific novelty. In the conditions of the Middle Urals, the dependence of the method and term of harvesting on the state of the seed grass stand of perennial leguminous crops, weather conditions during the harvesting period is revealed, the influence of the method and term of harvesting on the sowing qualities of seeds is established.

Although the main stem node number of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ] is an important yield-related trait, there have been limited studies on the effect of plant density on the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL) for main stem node number (MSNN). To address this issue, here, 144 four-way recombinant inbred lines (FW-RILs) derived from Kenfeng 14, Kenfeng 15, Heinong 48, and Kenfeng 19 were used to identify QTL for MSNN with densities of 2.2 × 105 (D1) and 3 × 105 (D2) plants/ha in five environments by linkage and association studies. As a result, the linkage and association studies identified 40 and 28 QTL in D1 and D2, respectively, indicating the difference in QTL in various densities. Among these QTL, five were common in the two densities; 36 were singly identified for response to density; 12 were repeatedly identified by both response to density and phenotype of two densities. Thirty-one were repeatedly detected across various methods, densities, and environments in the linkage and association studies. Among the 24 common QTL in the linkage and association studies, 15 explained a phenotypic variation of more than 10%. Finally, Glyma.06G094400, Glyma.06G147600, Glyma.19G160800.1, and Glyma.19G161100 were predicted to be associated with MSNN. These findings will help to elucidate the genetic basis of MSNN and improve molecular assistant selection in high-yield soybean breeding.

Enhanced seeds, e.g. dressed, encrusted or pelleted seeds, are often sown in agricultural practice. These treatments play a different role depending on the type and chemical composition of the preparation. The aim of the experiment was to compare the effectiveness of three coatings (B – chitosan, C – chitosan + alginate/jojoba oil/E and D – chitosan + alginate/PEG) applied to soybean seeds in comparison to control (A). The study was carried out in three cultivars: Annushka, Mavka and Smuglyanka. The coatings did not differentiate seed yield in 2018 due to favourable weather conditions. The use of coating D in the following years increased seed yield by 0.46 t/ha in 2019 and by 0.51 t/ha in 2020 compared to control. The obtained results allow concluding that coating D was the most effective in soybean cultivation. The field emergence capacity, plant density as well as the SPAD (soil plant analysis development) and LAI (leaf area index) indices were significantly increased compared to control as a result of this coating application. The g<sub>s</sub> index (stomatal leaf conductance) was significantly reduced. The cv. Smuglyanka yields were significantly higher compared to cvs. Mavka and Annushka, by 0.32 t/ha and 0.85 t/ha, respectively. The difference in seed yield between 2018 and 2019 was 0.81 t/ha.

The appropriate row spacing and sowing density of soybeans are the basic non-input and pro-environmental agrotechnical factors. The optimal spacing of plants in the field can be crucial in terms of reducing competition between plants for water, nutrients and light, which is particularly important for photosynthesis and maximizes the use of environmental resources. The field experiment was carried out in the years 2017–2019 at the Experimental Station for Cultivar Assessment in Przecław, Poland, on Merlin cv. soybean plants. The experimental factors were: row spacing of 15 and 30 cm and the sowing density of 70, 90 and 110 pcs. m−2. During the research, the influence of row spacing and sowing density on yielding, seed quality, plant morphological features, nodulation and physiological processes in plants was assessed. The obtained soybean seed yield was not influenced by the experimental factors, but only by the weather conditions prevailing in the research years. The smaller row spacing and sowing density of 15/70 and 30/70 resulted in an increase in the parameters of the yield structure, the number and dry weight of root nodules, as well as the parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm, Fv/F0 and PI). Greater plant density per area unit resulted in low yield structure parameters, lower number and dry weight of nodules, poorer parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence and higher protein content in seeds. With the increased sowing density, the plants were higher, the 1st. pod was placed higher and an LAI value was also higher.

Goal. The purpose of the research was to determine the influence of meteorological factors on potato yield in the conditions of the Right Bank Forest-steppe of Ukraine. Methods.Field, analytical and statistical. Results.It was established that among the mid-range varieties Divo stands out with a yield of 42.3 t/ha, Malin white – 39.8 t/ha, and Legend – 37.1 t/ ha. The most favourable weather and climatic conditions for the production of potato tubers were for the Divo 2011 variety with a yield of 45.9 t/ha and 2013 – 45.1 t/ha. For the Legenda variety 2016, the yield of potato tubers is 40.6 t/ha and 2017 – 43.2 t/ha. Malin White 2013 is 41.4 t/ha and 2017 42.1 t/ha. The average varieties of potatoes showed a slightly lower yield on average over the years of research. However, among the varieties is allocated Nadiyna – 40.3 t/ha, Slovyanka – 37.2 t/ ha and Vera 33.8 t/ha. Among the years, the most high-yielding for the Vera variety was 2016 with a yield of 36.6 t/ha and 2017 year – 37.8 t/ha. Varieties Slovyanka and Nadiyna 2011 and 2012 with yields of 42.6 and 44.3 t/ha and 46.5 and 45.3 t/ha, respectively. Characterizing the yield of potato tubers of medium-late varieties over the years of research, there was a decrease in this indicator compared with medium-early and middle-aged varieties. However, the high yield of the varieties of Dar is allocated – 40.0 t/ha, Alladin – 33.6 t/ha and Oxamit 31.3 t/ha. Among the years, the most favourable ones were: for Oxamit and Alladin – 2011 – 33.5 and 36.5 t/ha, and 2017 – 34.1 and 36.4 t/ha, respectively. Favourable years for harvesting varieties were 2011 and 2012 with yields of 45.7 and 45.8 t/ha. Thus, the highest yield of potato tubers on average over the years of studies of medium-early varieties of 41.2-43.3 t / ha were provided by weather conditions of 2011 and 2017 years, medium-ripe varieties 41.0-41.1 - 2012 and 2011, medium- late 37,6-38,5 t / ha - 2012 and 2011, respectively.

Abstract Background Low plant density and wide intra-plant spacing in traditional cowpea cropping systems are among the factors responsible for low yield on farmers’ fields. Sole cropping and improved intercropping systems have been advocated in the last few years to increase yield in the dry savannah areas of Nigeria. This study investigated the level of adoption of high yielding cowpea cropping systems including factors that influenced their use and farmers’ perceived production constraints and preferences. A total of 420 farmers across 36 villages of northern Nigeria were interviewed, and data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics to appraise farmers predominant cowpea cropping systems and factors that determine the use of sole versus intercropping were identified with the aid of binary logit regression. Furthermore, pairwise comparison ranking was deployed to understand farmers’ view of cowpea production constraints and preferred traits. Results The results revealed that, many of the farmers (42%) still grow cowpeas in the traditional intercropping and a good number (25%) cultivate the crop as a sole crop, while 23% had fields of cowpeas in both sole and intercropping systems. Farmers reported the incidence of high insect pests, limited access to land, desire to have multiple benefits, and assurance in the event of crop failure as reasons for preference for intercropping over sole planting. The pairwise comparison ranking of constraints and preferences revealed insect pests, Striga, drought and poor access to fertilizers as major constraints to increased productivity. Many farmers indicated high yield as the most preferred trait. Conclusions Findings indicate a need for increased education and training of cowpea farmers on the importance of growing cowpeas in sole cropping and or improved intercropping systems. Genetic improvement efforts should focus on developing cowpea varieties that address farmers production constraints and reflect the diversity of consumers’ preferences for the crop. Hence, breeding for resistance to insect pests and high yield is recommended as an important priority of cowpea breeding programmes in the region.

Annual plasticulture production of strawberries promises superior weed control, fruit quality and yields. However, strawberry varieties adapted for perennial, matted-row production and local markets in cold climate regions have not been widely tested for adaptation to an annual production cycle. Productivity of seven short-day varieties developed for matted-row and/or annual production was examined in an annual plasticulture system in two consecutive trials in central NY (lat. 42.87° N, long. 76.99° W) harvested in 2013 and 2014. ‘Flavorfest’ demonstrated good performance in Trial 1 with high yield (390 g/plant) and large fruit size (13.9 g mean berry weight). ‘Jewel’ was shown to be well adapted to the annual plasticulture system with consistently high yields (330 and 390 g/plant) that equaled or surpassed other varieties and had moderate fruit size. ‘Chandler’ performed similarly to previous trials conducted in warmer regions with yield (340 g/plant) and fruit size (9.8 g mean berry weight) similar to ‘Jewel’. ‘Clancy’ yielded less but was consistent from year to year. The late season varieties Seneca and Ovation showed marked variability between years, possibly due to drastically different temperatures during flowering and fruit development in Trial 1 compared to Trial 2. High temperatures in Trial 1 likely caused higher early fruit yield, a compressed season and a precipitous decline in fruit size in the later season, thus reducing yield in the late season. Survival after a second dormant period was poor resulting in a small second harvest and reduced fruit size. Overall, the system demonstrated many of the expected benefits but may be more sensitive to weather conditions in the region. While many varieties developed for matted-row production may work well in an annual plasticulture system, not all varieties are equally adapted. Performance of each variety should be determined independently before large scale adoption by growers.

Optimal plant density is required to improve plant phenological traits and maximize seed yield in field crops. In this study, we determined the effect of plant density on duration of flowering, post-flowering phase, and seed yield of canola in diverse environments. The field study was conducted at 16 site-years across the major canola growing area of western Canada from 2010 to 2012. The cultivar InVigor® 5440, a glufosinate-resistant hybrid, was grown at five plant densities (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 plants m−2) in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Canola seed yield had a linear relationship with plant density at 8 of the 16 site-years, a quadratic relationship at 4 site-years, and there was no correlation between the two variables in the remaining 4 site-years. At site-years with low to medium productivity, canola seed yield increased by 10.2 to 14.7 kg ha−1 for every additional plant per square metre. Averaged across the 16 diverse environments, canola plants spent an average of 22% of their life cycle flowering and another 27% of the time filling seed post-flowering. Canola seed yield had a negative association with duration of flowering and a positive association with the days post-flowering but was not associated with number of days to maturity. The post-flowering period was 12.7, 14.7, and 12.6 d (or 55, 68, and 58%) longer in high-yield experiments than in low-yield experiments in 2010, 2011, and 2012, respectively. We conclude that optimization of plant density for canola seed yield varies with environment and that a longer post-flowering period is critical for increasing canola yield in western Canada.
