A field experiment using attached soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, leaves showed that fresh weight gain of Geocoris punctipes (Say) (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) nymphs between days 14 and 21 was greater on ‘Govan’ and ‘Bragg’ leaves than on leaves of PI229358. Weight gain on ‘Govan’ leaves was greater than on PI171451 leaves. In the same experiment, there were no differences in fresh weight growth of G. punctipes nymphs on detached leaves of the four genotypes.

[email protected]   RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a cultura da soja semeada a campo em diferentes profundidades das sementes e épocas de semeadura e, dessa maneira, saber o quanto esses fatores influenciam a emergência e sobrevivência das plantas. O experimento foi conduzido em dois anos agrícolas, 2015/16 e 2016/17, com sementes de soja cultivar 5D634, na Fazenda Lageado, da Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas – UNESP, Botucatu (SP), Brasil. O delineamento foi de blocos ao acaso em esquema fatorial 6 × 2, com seis tratamentos referentes às profundidades das sementes na mesma linha de semeadura: 0,02, 0,05 e 0,08 m do nível do solo, e combinação e alternância entre eles: 0,02 e 0,05, 0,02 e 0,08, 0,05 e 0,08 m e duas épocas de semeadura: outubro e novembro, com quatro repetições, totalizando 48 parcelas. Para a análise estatística, os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância (ANOVA), utilizando o teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. A perda foi acima de 10% no estande de plantas na semeadura mais profunda (0,08 m), aliada à menor precipitação (outubro/2016), que contribuiu significativamente para esse resultado. Desta forma, a plantabilidade é prejudicada com o erro da profundidade de semeadura, aqui representada pela emergência e sobrevivência de plantas.   Palavras-chave: Glycine max L., Plantabilidade, Estande de plantas.   THE SOYBEAN SOWING DEPTH IN PLANTABILITY   ABSTRACT: The aim of this work was evaluate the sowing of soybean seed with error in soil deposition and different month of sowing. The field experiment was carried out during two years (2015 and 2016) at Fazenda Lageado, Faculty of Agronomic Sciences - UNESP / Botucatu - SP, Brazil. The plots were randomized blocks in 6 × 2 factorial, six treatments referring to the depth of the seeds in soil: 0.02 (T1); 0.05 (T2 - control) and 0.08 (T3); 0.02 and 0.05 (T4); 0.02 and 0.08 (T5); 0.05 and 0.08 m (T6) and two sowing times: October and November. For statistical analysis the data were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) using Tukey test at 5% probability. The number of plants in early stage decreased by over 10% in the deep seeding (0.08 m), added to the less rainfall (October / 2016) which contributed significantly to this result. Therefore, plantability is damaged by the error of sowing depth, represented here by the emergence and survival of plants.   Keywords: Glycine max L., Plantability, Early stage.

Objective: To evaluate the productive behavior of Creole sheep in the tropics fed a whole food diet that includes soybean (FS, Glycine max) fodder at different phenological stages. Methodology: The treatments T1: control, T2: 30% (SF-56 d), T3: 30% (SF-68 d), T4: 30% (SF-85 d), T5: 30% (SF-110 d) were assigned randomly to 30 male Creole sheep (15.51±1.6 kg LW). The experiment lasted 56 d. The variables evaluated were: dry matter consumption (DMC), daily weight gain (DWG) and feed conversion (FC). The experimental design wascompletely randomized and the averages of the treatments were compared using the Tukey test. Results: Differences (p<0.05) were found in DMC, DWG and FC. The DMC was lower (p<0.05) in the control group. The DWG was higher in the animals that consumed soybean fodder compared to the control group (0.205 vs 0.121 kg d-1). The FC decreased (p<0.05) 51% in T3 (SF 68 d), with respect to the control group. Study Limitations: The nutrient contribution of soybean fodder is based on the phenological stage of the plant. Likewise, producers in the tropical region have scarce knowledge about how to incorporate it in the feeding of small ruminants. Conclusions: The inclusion of 30% of soybean fodder at 68 d of age in a whole food diet improves the productive performance of the lambs because it increases daily weight gain and decreases feed conversion.

A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of zinc and vermicompost on the growth, yield and nutrient content of soybean (Glycine max L.) plant. The treatment variables were control (‒Zn and ‒VC), VC 5 ton/ha, Zn 1 kg/ha, Zn 2 kg/ha, Zn 3 kg/ha, Zn 1 kg/ha + VC 5 ton/ha, Zn 2 kg/ha + VC 5 ton/ha and Zn 3 kg/ha + VC 5 ton/ha. Application of zinc and vermicompost showed a significant effect on the growth parameters and macro- and micronutrients uptake by the plant. The highest average plant height (164 cm), leaf number (80 nos./plant), leaf area (3360 cm2/plant), fresh weight (49.03 gm/plant), dry weight (24.54 gm/plant), fruit length (9.4 cm), fruit number per plant (5 nos. /plant) were recorded for Zn 1 kg/ha + VC 5 ton/ha treatment while the lowest values were observed in control at harvest. Results of the growth parameters varied significantly (p ≤ 0.05) with time. It was observed that, the overall best growth performance was achieved in Zn 1 kg/ha + VC 5 ton/ha. Dhaka Univ. J. Biol. Nodule leghemoglobin content, acetylene reduction rates, and nodule weight determinations were made during an entire growth period of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Altona) plants grown under field conditions. High correlations within most sampling dates were found between each pair of possible comparisons of these indicators of nitrogen fixation.Rates of conversion of acetylene to ethylene per milligram leghemoglobin constantly decreased during the growing season, whereas leghemoglobin content per gram nodule fresh weight remained relatively constant. These results indicate that leghemoglobin content of nodules could be used to compare rates of nitrogen fixation in plants of a soybean cultivar at similar stages of development but should not be used to compare fixation rates in plants at different stages in ontogeny.

The scope of the present study was to investigate how the p-coumaric (p-CA) and p-hydroxybenzoic (p-HD) acids affect the peroxidase (POD, EC 1.11.1.7) activity, the lipid peroxidation (LP) and the root growth of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). Three-day-old seedlings were cultivated in nutrient solution containing p-CA or p-HD (0.1 to 1 mM) for 48 h. After uptake, both compounds (at 0.5 and 1 mM) decreased root length (RL), fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) while increased soluble POD activity, cell wall (CW)-bound POD activity (with 1 mM p-CA and 0.5 mM p-HD) and LP.

Three advanced lines (SB02, SB05, SB07) along with one tolerant (Lokon) and one susceptible check (Asswt) of soybean (Glycine max L.) were assessed for salt tolerance in terms of morpho-physiological traits and molecular markers (SSR). The experiment was conducted at seedling stage with four salinity treatments namely 0, 8, 12 and 16 dSm-1 following Completely Randomized design. All the genotypes displayed considerable reduction in their morphological traits, least affecting the tolerant one. None of the genotypes were survived at 12 and 16 dSm-1 stress condition. Among the lines tested, SB-02 and SB-05 were identified as salt tolerant at 8 dSm-1 based on salinity susceptibility index (SSI) scoring. These genotypes suffered less in reduction of leaf chlorophyll content (SPAD) and increase of Na+/K+ than the susceptible genotypes. For all the traits viz. shoot length, root length, total length, shoot fresh weiht, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, total fresh weight, total dry weight, percent live leaves, chlorophyll content and Na+/K+ ratio, the phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was higher than that of genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV). All the traits studied showed medium to high heritability ranging between 43.81% (SPAD) to 96.65% (shoot length). The genotypes were grouped into two clusters considering both Euclidian distance and Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean analysis. Lokon, SB-02 and SB-05 are on the same cluster as tolerant, and SB-7 and Asset on the other as susceptible to salt stress. The molecular pattern using by SSR marker displayed an average number of 3.33 alleles per locus with PIC (Polymorphism Information Content) values ranged from 0.2688 (sat_655 and satt728) to 0.7680 (sat_210). The highest gene diversity was observed in sat_210 and satt237 and the lowest in sat_655 and satt728 with a mean diversity of 0.5733. The genotypes Lokon, SB-02 and SB-05 could be suggested as a potential germplasm source of QTL (Quantitative Trait Loci) analysis for the development of salt tolerant soybean variety. Ann. Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cult Hood and Dare were exposed to low concentrations of ozone or sulfur dioxide, or both, during the first 3 wk of growth. Foliar injury occurred on both cultivars in the ozone and mix treatments. Dare developed more foliar injury than Hood. Plant height, top and root fresh and dry weights, and the dry shoot–root ratios were significantly reduced by the 10-pphm ozone treatment. The mix of 5 pphm ozone plus 5 pphm sulfur dioxide significantly reduced top fresh weight, root fresh and dry weights, and shoot–root ratios. Treatments of 5 pphm ozone, 5 pphm or 20 pphm sulfur dioxide had no significant effects on plant growth. The growth reductions resulting from the ozone–sulfur dioxide mix were greater than the additive reductions of the single gases. The lack of a significant cultivar × treatment interaction indicated that the growth of the two cultivars responded similarly to the various treatments.

In Indonesia, Inceptisols is the largest soil order on which intensive agriculture is done. The fertility of this soil order is low, so that it is necessary to improve the soil fertility by using biofertilizers and organic matter. The objectives of this experiment were to determine the effect of a biofertilizer that contains microbe Azotobacter sp., Vermicompost and N, P, K Fertilizer on N content, the population of Azotobacter sp., and the yield of the Edamame soybeans at Inceptisols Jatinangor. A Field experiment was conducted by using Randomized Blocked Design consisted of 10 treatments and three replication. The combinations of these treatments consisted of: control (no treatment), the dose recommendation Urea 100 kg ha-1 + SP36 150 kg ha-1 + KCl 125 kg ha-1, 5 ton ha-1 vermicompost + ½ recommendation ha-1 N, P, K, 5 ton ha-1 vermicompost + 1 recommendation ha-1 N, P, K, 5 ton ha-1 vermicompost + 1½ recommendation ha-1 N, P, K, 10 ton ha-1 vermicompost + ½ recommendation ha-1 N, P, K, 10 ton ha-1 vermicompost + 1 recommendation ha-1 N, P, K, 10 ton ha-1 vermicompost + 1½ recommendation ha-1 N, P, K, 5 ton ha-1 vermicompost +  ½ recommendation ha-1 N, P, K + liquid biofertilizers 5 L ha-1, 10 ton ha-1 Vermicompost + ½ recommendation ha-1 N, P, K + liquid biofertilizers 5 L ha-1.  The experimental results showed that the combined treatment of liquid biofertilizer, Vermicompost and N, P, K fertilizer enhanced the population of Azotobacter sp. and weight of soybean but did not significantly influence N uptake.

 RESUMO – O cultivo do sorgo granífero avança no Brasil. Todavia, existem evidências sugerindo efeito inibitório sobre a soja cultivada em sucessão. Objetivou-se investigar o efeito inibitório do cultivo de sorgo granífero (BRS 332) sobre o desempenho da soja (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) semeada em sucessão. Para isso, realizou-se um experimento de campo em blocos ao acaso em esquema de parcela subdivididas. As parcelas foram compostas pelas culturas antecessoras sorgo e milho e as subparcelas, por cinco datas de semeadura da soja após a colheita das culturas antecessoras (0, 20, 40, 60 e 80 dias após a colheita). Observou-se que o sorgo, como cultura antecessora, resultou em menores percentagens de emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência, altura de inserção de primeira vagem e número de vagens por planta de soja, apesar da produtividade de grãos não ter sido afetada. Conclui-se que o desenvolvimento vegetativo inicial da soja é afetado negativamente quando a semeadura é realizada em até 40 dias após a colheita do sorgo. Contudo, o cultivo anterior de sorgo na mesma área, comparativamente ao cultivo anterior do milho, não é capaz de afetar a produtividade da soja.Palavras-chave: Glicine max, Sorghum bicolor, sorgoleone, Zea mays. INHIBITORY EFFECT OF SORGHUM ON SOYBEAN IN SUCCESSION  ABSTRACT - The cultivation of grain sorghum is advancing in Brazil, however, there is evidence suggesting an inhibitory effect on soybeans grown in succession. The objective of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of grain sorghum (BRS 332) on the performance of soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) seeded in succession. For this, a field experiment was carried out in a randomized blocks design in a subdivided plot scheme. The plots were composed of the predecessor crops sorghum and maize and the subplots were five soybean sowing dates after harvesting the predecessor crops (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 days after harvest). It was observed that sorghum as a predecessor crop resulted in lower emergence percentages, emergence speed index, first pod insertion height and number of pods per soybean plant, although grain yield was not affected. As conclusion, the initial vegetative development of soybean was negatively affected when sowing was carried out up to 40 days after sorghum harvest. However the previous cultivation of sorghum in the same area did not affect soybean productivity, compared to the previous corn crop.Keywords: Glicine max, Sorghum bicolor, sorgoleone, Zea mays.

Nanoscale hydroxyapatite (nHA) was synthesized to investigate its potential as a phosphorus (P) ensembled nanofertilizer, using soybean (Glycine max L.) as a model plant. The conventional analogue phosphate (pi) was used for comparison with the synthesized nHA. Varied precipitation intensities (0%, 30%, 60%, and 100%) were simulated by adding selected volumes of the P fertilizers (nHA or pi) via foliar spray and soil amendment. The total amounts of added P were the same across all the treatments. The importance of a wash-off effect was investigated on foliar-treated seedlings by evaluating different watering heights (20, 120, and 240 cm above the seedlings). Fresh weight, pigment content, macro-, and micronutrient contents were measured in soybean tissues across all the treatments after 4 weeks of greenhouse cultivation. The synthesized nHA showed superior effects on plant nutrient content upon high precipitation intensities. For example, at 100% precipitation intensity, there was 32.6% more P and 33.2% more Ca in shoots, 40.6% more P and 45.4% more Ca in roots, and 37.9% more P and 82.3% more Ca in pods, as compared to those with pi treatment, respectively. No impact on soybean biomass was evident upon the application of nHA or pi. Further investigation into customizing nHA to enhance its affinity with crop leaves and to extend retention time on the leaf surface is warranted given that the present study did not show significant positive impacts of nHA on soybean growth under the effects of precipitation. Taken together, our findings increase understanding of the potential application of nHA as a nano-enabled fertilizer in sustainable agriculture.
