Tourists are continuously searching for new trends, exciting ways of traveling and a variety of adrenaline rush experiences. Dark tourism is one of many examples of tourism products that able to fulfill these objectives. Although Malaysia has many dark tourism sites, they are not globally recognized yet and able to attract international tourists. Many focused on the negative impacts of the sites rather than the potential benefits of the industry. Thus, this study is prepared to investigate the benefits of dark tourism among visitors. The study adopted a model from Kang, Scott, Lee,   and Ballantyne (2012). Three factors including social benefits, learning benefits, and psychological benefits were discussed. The findings have shown that dark tourism contributes sufficient benefits which may aid the rapid development of this tourism sector in the future. The rapid development in the tourism sector is accompanied by an increase in foreign tourist arrivals, making the Indonesia’s hotel industry which is part of the tourism sector, growing dramatically. Competition between brands is unavoidable, each hotel must develop its own brand strategy. This study aims to add insight into brand management specifically in the hotel industry. This study used a quantitative method by distributing questionnaires to 219 respondents who lived in Jabodetabek and had stayed at five-star hotels located in Java and Bali. From this study it can be concluded that the role of brand attractiveness in giving indirect effects to brand prestige, brand distinctiveness, brand social benefits, and memorable brand experience on customer brand identification. This study also stated the importance of brand prestige, brand distinctiveness, and brand social benefits significantly and positively influences customer brand identification directly.

The rapid development of transportation and communication technologies, improvements in distribution of income, and expansion of the right to vacation to masses are growing the tourism market all over the world. The demands are diversifying and different sub-markets that address the increasingly varied understandings of vacation and accommodation are emerging in the growing tourism market. This study is the summary of the project TR/22/TRA2/0005 supported by the GMKA within the Financial Assistance Programs in 2013 and completed on February 21, 2014. Additionally, in this study, the activities carried out within the scope of the project were examined especially in terms of the webpage, tangible outputs of the project have shed some light on the future of secondary homes, and concrete suggestions were offered in terms of work to be done hereafter. This study has examined alternative accommodation businesses as a new field of work that sheds light on the future of the tourism sector. In this framework, alternative accommodation businesses (such as Airbnb, HomeAway) are discussed.

This research note provides an account of the trajectory of Balinese tourism through 2020, focusing on government actions in the face of the coronavirus pandemic and the responses of local people. Interviews were conducted with informants in the tourism sector to assess the impact of the pandemic. The findings suggest that before April 2020, people were calm and thought that Balinese tourism may survive, albeit on much-reduced arrivals. After April, when tourism shut down completely, a new sense of pessimism became evident. Although domestic tourism began again in August, the sector was still in deep crisis at the end of the year. Although Balinese people expressed hope that the future may offer a more sustainable kind of tourism, all indications pointed to official support for a return to mass tourism.

Didymosphenia geminata diatoms, or Didymo, was first found to be an invasive species that could have negative impacts on the environment due to the aggressive growth of its polysaccharide-based stalks. The stalks’ adhesive properties have prompted park officials to alert the general public to limit further spread and contamination of this algae to other bodies of water. Although the negative effects of Didymo have been studied in the past, recent studies have demonstrated a potential positive side to this alga. One of the potential benefits includes the structural component of the polysaccharide stalks. The origin of the polysaccharides within stalks remains unknown; however, they can be useful in a waste management and agricultural setting. The primary purpose of this study was to describe both the harmful and beneficial nature of Didymo. Important outcomes include findings related to its application in various fields such as medicine and technology. These polysaccharides can be isolated and studied closely to produce efficient solar power cells and batteries. Though they may be harmful while uncontained in nature, they appear to be very useful in the technological and medical advancement of our society.

AbstractWith the rapid development of science and technology, increasing research interests have been focused on environment protection, global warming, and energy shortage. At present, reducing friction force as much as possible has developed into an urgent issue. Sharkskin effect has the potential ability to lower viscous drag on the fluid-solid interface in turbulence, and therefore, how to fabricate bio-inspired sharkskin surfaces is progressively becoming the hot topic. In this review, various methods of fabricating drag reduction surfaces covering biological sharkskin morphology are illustrated and discussed systematically, mainly involving direct bio-replicated, synthetic fabricating, bio/micro-rolling, enlarged solvent-swelling, drag reduction additive low-releasing, trans-scale enlarged three-dimensional fabricating, flexible printing, large-proportional shrunken bio-replicating, ultraviolet (UV) curable painting, and stretching deformed methods. The overview has the potential benefits in better acquainting with the recent research status of fabricating sharkskin surfaces covering the biological morphology.

Research on military education under the rapid development and growth of armaments and equipment is booming. The field is continually gaining more key insights about this important and complex pedagogical problem. Academic interest on the systemic approach in the development of military education has consistently been a multidisciplinary effort. But perhaps systemic approach in pedagogic researchers are particularly well situated to be the leading voices on the public’s understanding of military education and many are heeding the call. With that responsibility in mind, in this paper, we offer to consider four elements of the educational process for the future of pedagogic research that we believe can help focus this line of inquiry to better ensure we address some of the most pressing problems. Based on critical assessments of the gaps in the literature, the paper cites the need to combine all elements of the educational process into a single system to achieve a focused result in the training of military personnel in educational institutions. Our list is not exhaustive, nor do we suggest that areas we do not cover are not important. Rather, we make these observations with the goal of spurring a conversation about the future of military education research, but especially a systemic approach in the development of military education.

The rapid development of Bali tourism sector, especially in the tourist area of Lake Batur, lead to many changes in community cultural patterns. Several issues, such as the transition of space functions and the development of tourism designations, have not considered the environmental, economic, social and cultural conditions in the local area. Several regional policies were established in order to maintain the local wisdom of the Hindu-Balinese community and become the basis for organizing tourism in Bali. The availability of open space in a tourist attraction in an destination can be a supporting factor for tourists and local communities. This was a qualitative descriptive study. This method aims to obtain an in-depth description regarding the forms of local wisdom of the Hindu-Balinese community which contain the elements of balance which further be adjusted into spatial planning. A sustainable tourist park may be a site for the activities and interaction among local community, tourists, and also be able to become a forum for education regarding Balinese culture and the natural environment, both of which need to be preserved for the sustainability of Lake Batur tourist area which has a great potential in the development of tourism sector.

The full involvement of local communities in the tourism sector, not only benefits them and the environment in general, but also improves the quality of the tourism experience. Projects imposed from outside and motivated by the pursuit of rapid economic growth often override local needs, conditions and resources, and result in unacceptable environmental, social and cultural costs. Local involvement is crucial to sustainable and appropriate development, which meets the needs of the local people and safeguards their natural and cultural environments. Thus a local development strategy is essential, especially in disadvantaged areas and countries.

The World Tourism Conference, held in Manila from 27 September to 10 October 1980, proved that the human community is still able to think generously and clearly, and to hold a courageous vision of the future. The Conference was convened to examine a subject which would lead to modification of outmoded concepts and practices, and would induce governments as well as the travel industry to reconsider all of their activities in the tourism sector. The Manila conference was able to show the way to build for the future in a field – that of free time and leisure – which is becoming one of the important responsibilities of governments, as non-working time increases in relation to working time because of the transformations that modern society is undergoing.
