Peganum harmala is a plant that belongs to the family Zygophyllaceae. In traditional medicine, this plant has therapeutic effects such as repelling intestinal worms, increasing sexual potency, increasing milk secretion, anti-rheumatism, regularizing, anti-parasitic, hypnotic, diaphoretic, anti-cancer and analgesic. The aim of this study was to identify the chemical composition of P. harmala seed essential oil. P. harmala seed essential oil was extracted by Head Space-SPME [HS-SPME] method and its chemical compounds were identified by GC-MS method. Totally, 41 chemical compounds were identified in P. harmala seed essential oil. According to the results, the most compounds of P. harmala L. seed essential oil includes 2,3-dimethyl benzofuran (28.32%), cis-linalool oxide (7.46%), [2E]- decenal (6.57%), 4aα,7β,7aα-nepetalactone (6.49%), 3-oxo-p-menth-1-en-7-al (6.36%) and trans- β- terpineol (5.86%), respectively.

Abstract Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is a shrub of the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region. The material used for herbal purposes includes lavender flowers (Lavandula flores) containing essential oil (3%), anthocyanins, phytosterols, sugars, minerals, and tannins. The qualitative and quantitative composition of the essential oil of lavender is variable and depends on genotype, growing location, climatic conditions, propagation, and morphological features. The essential oil contains over 300 chemical compounds. The dominant components are linalool, linalyl acetate, terpinen-4-ol, acetate lavandulol, oci-mene, and cineole. Lavender essential oil has good antioxidant and antimicrobial activities and a significant positive effect on the digestive and nervous systems. Lavender extract prevents dementia and may inhibit the growth of cancer cells, while lavender hydrolate is recommended for the treatment of skin problems and burns.

ABSTRACT: The Annonaceae family consists of ~135 genera with diverse species and a large number of chemical compounds arising from the secondary metabolism. However, the chemical composition of the essential oil of several species of the family such as Cardiopetalum calophyllum has not been completely determined. In this study, the essential oils extracted from the leaves, flowers, and fruits of C. calophyllum , collected in typical areas of the Cerrado of Goiás, were characterized. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation for 4h using a Clevenger apparatus. The chemical analysis was carried out by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the constituents were identified by comparing the spectra and retention index obtained with those available in the literature. Twenty three compounds were identified in the essential oil of leaves; the oxygenated sesquiterpene, spathulenol (28.78%), was the major compound. Twenty five compounds were identified in the flowers, mainly comprising sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, germacrene-D (37.03%) and germacrene-B (13.72%). Seventeen compounds were reported in fruits, mainly comprising sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, germacrene-D (28.19%) and germacrene-B (20.90%), and an oxygenated sesquiterpene, spathulenol (11.53%). This is the first report on the chemical composition of the essential oils from leaves, flowers, and fruits of C. calophyllum.

Essential oils obtained from many plants showed various kinds of insecticidal properties; some of them have been considered as alternative insecticides for pest control. The present study was aimed at determining the chemical composition of the essential oil from the roots of Bupleurum bicaule Helm, as well as evaluating the contact and repellent activities of the oil and four identified compounds against Lasioderma serricorne and Liposcelis bostrychophila adults. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation, and its components were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). 26 components were determined and the main compounds included trans-2-isopropylbicyclo[4.3.0]non-3-en-8-one (25.9%), 4,5-dimethyl-1,2,3,6,7,8,8a,8b-octahydrobiphenylene (23.5%), and 1,4-dimethoxy-2-tert-butylbenzene (4.3%). It was found that the essential oil exhibited contact toxicity against L. serricorne (LD50 = 11.91 μg/adult), but the contact toxicity against L. bostrychophila could not be observed. The essential oil also showed strong repellent activity against L. serricorne with percent repellency of 100% at 78.63 nl/cm2. Four chemical compounds, 1,4-dimethoxy-2-tert-butylbenzene, bornyl acetate, (2E,4E)-2,4-nonadienal, and β-bisabolene, exhibited various levels of bioactivities. The experimental results indicated that the essential oil of B. bicaule and its individual compounds could be used in insecticidal and repellent strategies for stored product insects.

The chemical composition of the essential oil from the rhizome of ginger ( Zingiber officinale Roscoe), collected from Nahan, Himachal Pradesh, India, was determined by gas chromatography and GC-MS. Fifty-one compounds, representing 95.1% of the oil, were identified. The oil was characterized by relatively large amounts of the monoterpenoids 1,8-cineole (10.9%), linalool (4.8%), borneol (5.6%), α-terpineol (3.6%), neral (8.1%), geraniol (14.5%), geranial (9.5%), trans-dimethoxy citral (5.0%) and geranyl acetate (6.3%). Five compounds, namely trans-linalool oxide, trans-linalool oxide acetate, ( Z)-dimethoxycitral, ( E)-dimethoxy citral and epi-zingiberenol are reported for the first time in oil of ginger.

The essential oil of fresh wild Syringa pubescens flowers from China was obtained by hydrodistillation and identified by GC–MS. Altogether 49 components, mostly terpenoids and benzene derivatives, were identified. Many compounds are responsible for flowery or flowery-like aroma, such as benzyl alcohol, benzene acetaldehyde, cis-linalool oxide (furan), linalool, phenylethyl alcohol, α-terpineol, myrtenol, cis-geraniol, p-vinylguaiacol, eugenol, trans-nerolidol, etc. The predominant volatile compound in fresh wild Syringa pubescens flowers was furfural, followed by phenylethyl alcohol, carveol, borneol, eugenol, linalool, 2-propenylbenzoate, camphor, 4-terpineol, α-terpineol, benzaldehyde, trans-nerolidol, α-cadinol, thujone and benzyl alcohol. These results suggest that essential oil of fresh wild Syringa pubescens flowers has important flowery or flowery-like aroma properties and may be useful as a natural flavor to replace synthetic flavor.


Today, we still understand the collaboration between plants, drugs and food. Herbal medicines have been used for many years because of their mild side effects, suitability, and influence. Citrus is a liquid plant in the family of Rutaceae. In the genus citrus, approximately 140 genera and 1300 species are present. The word lemon comes from "limon" in ancient French. There are several other lemon fruit names available. The main components of the chemical makeup are flavonoids, acids, caffeine, pectin and minerals. Many ingredients contain basic citrus oil, and limonene is the main ingredient in its odour. Lemon has many qualities, such as antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, depurative, antiscorbutic, etc. Lemon essential oil is toxic, especially in pregnancy, breastfeeding and radiation exposure. This article provides the information about medicinal and health benefits of lemon.


Essential oil extracted from Melaleucagenus has been widely used worldwidefor many purposes. Most of the its has been reported as the source of phytochemical compound where mostly have anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, antioxidant, antimicrobial and insecticide properties. Thus, three objectives that have been highlighted in this study are (1) to extract essential oil (cajuput oil) from fresh leaves of MelaleucacajuputiPowell using simple steam distillation,(2) to determine the chemical components of MelaleucacajuputPowell essential oil using GCMS and (3) to compare the chemical compound and its percentage with the previous study.Results found that there were 41 chemical compounds that have been identified. The chemical compounds were monoterpenes such as α-terpinolene, α-pinene, sabinene, 4-terpineol and γ-terpinene. The highest chemical compounds found were caryophyllene (20.16%), α-terpinolene (17.0%),α-humulene (11.91%), βelemene (7.62%) and γ-terpinene (5.62%). In previous research, 1,8-cineole chemical compound was foundhowever, in this study a different chemical compound found, it was caryophyllene, this is due to different geographic area.As a conclusion, most of the compounds found was aromatic, antibacterial andinsecticide properties.

Cassia singueana (Delile) Lock from the family Fabaceae is a well-known medicinal plant that grows abundantly in Nigeria and other African countries, and has long been used in the treatment of various ailments including malaria and other infectious diseases. The present study aimed at assessing the composition, and bioactivity of the essential oil of the flowers of C. singueana collected from Nigeria. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation and the chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) coupled with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and GC coupled to mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The bioactivity of the oil was determined using the brine shrimp lethality assay, agar diffusion antimicrobial test, the 2, 2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl, metal chelation, and superoxide anion antioxidant assays. The essential oil yield and the percentage of identified compounds were 1.58% and 97.91%, respectively. More than 20 compounds were identified. The major component was geranyl acetone (36.82%) followed by phytol (18.12%). The essential oil showed lethality against the brine shrimp larvae with an LC50 value of 18.7 µg/ml, and antimicrobial activity with largest inhibition zones of 32-33 mm against Candida albicans, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus. The oil also exhibited considerable antioxidant activity as evident from its ability to scavenge free-radicals such as DPPH, superoxide anions, and metal-chelation.

Several of which have been established scientifically, which may help the reserchers to set their minds for approaching the utility efficiency and potency of nagarmotha. Pien-Tze-Huang (PTH) is a famous and commonly used traditional Chinese medicine formula in China. It was first formulated by a royal physician of the Ming Dynasty (around 1555 AD). Recently, PTH has attracted attention worldwide due to its beneficial effects against various diseases, especially cancer. This paper systematically reviewed the up-to-date information on its chemical composition, pharmacology, and clinical application. A range of chemical compounds, mainly ginsenosides and bile acids, have been identified and quantified from PTH. Pharmacological studies indicated that PTH has beneficial effects against various cancers, hepatopathy, and ischemic stroke. Furthermore, PTH has been used clinically to treat various diseases in China, such as colorectal cancer, liver cancer, and hepatitis. In summary, PTH is a potential agent with extensive therapeutic effects for the treatment of various diseases. However, the lack of information on the side effects and toxicity of PTH is a non-negligible issue, which needs to be seriously studied in the future.
