Javanese manuscripts as the legacy of ancestors and poets contain important values related to character education and moral values. Manuscript of Serat Wulang Darmawiya (SWD), for example, promotes character education through laku batin. The values of character education are fundamental to internalize and implement within the life of Javanese. Javanese poets in the past inherited the noble values through a lot of literary works. This article discusses the values of character education in SWD. Using text-based qualitative research methodology, the values of character education in SWD were analyzed with content analysis. Serat teaches values of character education regarding the importance of breastfeeding as a process of building an intimate relationship between children and parents (mother). At the same time, it also explains the importance of communication between children and parents during education process, the principles of child education, and the role model and advice from the parents to the children. In addition, the philosophy of SWD is closely integrated with Islamic teachings.Naskah-naskah Jawa peninggalan para leluhur dan para pujangga, sarat dengan nilai pendidikan karakter dan budi pekerti luhur. Naskah Serat Wulang Darmawiyata (SWD) memiliki keunikan pada penanaman nilai pendidikan karakter khas Jawa, yakni membentuk anak mandiri dan cerdas berdasarkan laku prihatin. Nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter bagi masyarakat Indonesia merupakan hal yang amat penting untuk dimiliki dan diterapkan dalam kehidupan berkeluarga dan bermasyarakat, demikian pula dengan masyarakat Jawa. Para pujangga Jawa masa lalu telah banyak mewariskan nilai-nilai luhur melalui berbagai karya dalam sastra Jawa. Artikel ini secara khusus membahas tentang nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter dalam SWD. Dengan menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif berbasis teks sastra Jawa, naskah yang memiliki makna nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter dianalisis dengan metode analisis isi. Dalam serat tersebut, terdapat nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter tentang pentingnya menyusui sebagai proses kedekatan anak dengan orang tua (ibu). Selanjutnya dalam serat tersebut, dijelaskan pula tentang pentingnya pendidikan komunikasi anak dan orang tua, prinsip-prinsip mendidik anak, dan keteladan serta nasehat orang tua terhadap anak. Selain itu, falsafah dalam SWD memiliki hubungan atau terintegrasi dengan ajaran Islam.

This paper tries to look at the irreverent phenomena that occur in students today, and to find a way out through a series of events in the past with the value of local wisdom in the past. There are two things (more precisely an offer) to be conveyed in this paper in solving this problem. First, an explanation of the value of local wisdom contained in pappasang to riolo, the second tells about the exemplary suri to-riolo (ancestors). These two things are integrated into the historical material and conveyed to students so that students with character can be created. This paper uses a qualitative research method with an anthropological-historical approach in seeing the character (value) of students who experience moral degradation. The results of this study are a new model of character education approach using culture as a role model.

Folklore is a story that originated in society and developed in society in the past which played an important role in the development of children's character learning in the form of moral values. The purpose of this study was to explain the moral values contained in folklore to improve character education. This study used a qualitative descriptive research design. Where all the data collected is based on books and other supporting document data. From the discussion of the Timun Mas folklore, there are eight prominent moral values, namely religious values, independent values, curiosity values, hard work values, responsibility values, honesty values, creativity, the value of the spirit of hard work. And from the research results, it can be concluded that the folklore of Timun Mas has many moral values that can be applied in the world of Education to shape character.

The Gurage are South Ethiosemitic speakers living in the Gurage Zone in Ethiopia. In the Gurage culture, cursing expressions have differing sociological significance. They are used both literally and pragmatically. Although the cursing expressions are endangered due to modern religions, they are not well studied and documented. The objective of this article is to describe the sociolinguistic and pragmatic meanings and the structural patterns of cursing expressions in the Gurage culture, and then to compare the expressions with Nordic countries’ cursing to uncover if there are universal tendencies in the rules and routines of cursing. The study follows qualitative research methodology. The cursing expressions were partly collected from literature and largely elicited from key informants. For the cursing in Gurage, the Gumer variety, from among other 12 dialect clusters of Guragina, was chosen to maintain uniformity in description. The findings showed that self-cursing in Gurage is used to express regret, encouragement, admiration, congratulation, condolence and politeness. Alter cursing is used to cause fear, to express emotions and negative attitude towards others. Age and gender determine cursing practice. Only elder men can take part in formal group alter cursing. Women generally curse themselves and individuals in informal situations. Formal alter cursing in Gurage is graded by elders for its severity. Cursing in the Nordic countries of today is more restricted to psychological functions and a kind of identity construction. In the past, however, several of its functions were similar to the ones in Gurage.

AbstrakNaskah Tashrihah Al-Muhtaaj merupakan salah satu cerminan kebudayaan masyarakat Jawa pada masa lampau yang berisi nilai-nilai sebagai sumber kedamaian dalam bermasyarakat. Pengkajian terhadap naskah tersebut dianggap penting, mengingat adanya krisis moral di kalangan siswa-siswi di sekolah. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengungkap nilai-nilai moral Jawa dalam naskah Tashrihah Al-Muhtaaj dan relevansi nilai-nilai tersebut dalam pendidikan karakter di sekolah. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan teknik analisis konten dengan pendekatan hermeneutik. Sumber data penelitian adalah naskah Tashrihah Al-Muhtaaj yang berisi 25 teks, tetapi hanya 8 teks yang dapat mewakili nilai-nilai moral Jawa dalam naskah. Adapun pengesahan data dengan cara validitas semantik dan reliabilitas intrarater. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya relevansi nilai-nilai moral dalam naskah dengan nilai pendidikan budaya dan karakter bangsa. Nilai moral dalam naskah berupa nilai kejujuran, tanggung jawab, kerukunan, keadilan, dan hati nurani. Nilai-nilai tersebut relevan dengan nilai pendidikan budaya dan karakter bangsa, yaitu pada nilai jujur, tanggung jawab, toleransi dan cinta damai, demokratis, dan peduli sosial. Dengan demikian, nilai-nilai moral dalam naskah Tashrihah Al-Muhtaaj dapat diterapkan sebagai acuan atau contoh pendidikan karakter di sekolah. Kata kunci: naskah kuno, nilai moral Jawa, pendidikan, Tashrihah Al-Muhtaaj AbstractThe Tashrihah Al-Muhtaaj manuscript is one of the manifestation of Javanese culture in the past which consists of many values as the peace and society sources. The study of this manuscript is vwry significant. It is caused by the moral crisis happenedto the students in the school. The aim of this study is to unravel Javanese moral values in Tashrihah Al-Muhtaaj manuscript and the relevance of these values in character education at school. The research method used was content analysis technique with hermeneutic approach. The data source in this study is Tashrihah Al-Muhtaaj manuscript, which originally contains 25 texts, but only 8 texts represent Javanese moral values. The data validation was done by applying semantic validity and intra-rater reliability. In brief, the result shows that there is relevance of moral values in Tashrihah Al-Muhtaaj manuscript with the values of cultural education and national character. The moral values in Tashrihah Al-Muhtaaj manuscript comprise honesty, responsibility, harmony, justice, and conscience. Moreover, these values are relevant to the values of cultural education and national character; they are the values of honesty, responsibility, tolerance and love for peace, democratic, and social care. Therefore, the moral values in Tashrihah Al-Muhtaaj manuscript can be applied as references or examples of character education at school.  Keywords: ancient script, Javanese moral value, education, Tashrihah Al-Muhtaaj

Kertas penyelidikan ini membincangkan tentang nilai estetika pada sesebuah tepak sirih dari sudut reka bentuk serta motif rekacoraknya. Tepak sirih yang terdiri daripada cembul-cembul, bekas sirih, kacip dan gobek tampil dalam pelbagai gaya dan citarasa membuktikan keunikan, kreativiti dan daya fikir masyarakat Melayu terdahulu. Proses penciptaannya diungkapkan menerusi garapan keindahan flora dan fauna yang hidup di alam sekeliling ini. Penyelidikan yang dijalankan ini berbentuk deskriptif, hasil dari kajian lapangan dan pustaka bagi mengutip data. Maka, kaedah kualitatif digunakan bagi tujuan mengumpul segala maklumat yang diperoleh. Kaedah temubual, pemerhatian, dokumentasi dan rakaman visual dapat menjelaskan lagi tentang segala maklumat yang diperlukan. Kerelevanan kajian ini sangat perlu memandangkan zaman kini serba maju dan canggih menyaksikan golongan muda dan pewaris lebih cenderung mengagungkan budaya barat dan teknologi gajet. Mereka janggal untuk mengenali budaya dan adat Melayu warisan nenek moyang sendiri. Maka, destinasi hasil peninggalan warisan tersebut berakhir di galeri dan muzium yang kurang impaknya kepada golongan tersebut. Justeru itu, tepak sirih dilihat sebagai satu set kesenian yang dapat melambangkan ketinggian estetika dan kesantunan berbudaya masyarakat Melayu. Ia mementingkan kehidupan bersatu menerusi nilai, adat dan budaya berperaturan, kekal dan mekar sepanjang zaman menggenggam erat pepatah Melayu lama iaitu “Tak Lapuk Dek Hujan dan Tak Lekang Dek Panas”.   This research paper discusses the aesthetic value of an object called "Tepak Sireh" from the perspective of its design and pattern motifs. Consisting of betel-Handset, container betel, incisors and gobek, a Tepak sireh comes in various styles and tastes. This indicates the uniqueness, creativity and energy of the past thinking of Malay Society. The process of its creation is revealed through the application of the beauty of the flora and fauna that live in this environment. The qualitative research methodology was adopted. Data were collected by conducting interviews, observations, documentation and visual recordings The relevance of this study is crucial given that the Malay culture has not received as much attention as the other cultures from the youngsters.. This has left the legacy in galleries and museums hence inevident impact on the group. Therefore, Tepak Sireh can be viewed as a set of art that symbolizes the highly aesthetical and modestly cultured Malay community. It is concerned with life united by values, customs and culture of rules, that stay forever adhering to the old Malay proverb which is “Tak Lapuk Dek Hujan dan Tak Lekang Dek Panas”.

This study aimed to determine the planning of character education integration in Arabic learning, the implementation of the integration and the implications of character education on the students’ character in Muhammadiyah Middle School 10 Yogyakarta. This was a qualitative research. Data were collected by observation, interviews and documentation. Data was analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods. The results showed: (1) Planning for the integration was included into syllabus and lesson plans. The integration of character education was carried out in the philosophical, material and strategic domains. (2) The implementation of character education integration in Arabic language learning was done through learning activities, giving advice, and the teacher’s role model in Arabic teaching. At the stage of implementation, the integration  had been carried out in the philosophy, material and strategy domains. (3) The implications of character education on students’ character were the development of religiousity, obedience, discipline, communicativeness and responsibility.

The purpose of this research is to find out how the epistemology of Islamic character education in Islamic Elementery School. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. The data used are qualitative data. Data obtained from observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used in this research is qualitative analysis and hermeneutics (interpretation). Islamic character education is applied through habituation activities carried out in madrasas. The teacher has a very important role in shaping the character of Islamic students. The teacher will be an example or role model for their students. Among the habituation activities in madrassas that form Islamic character include shaking hands with teachers, praying dhuha in congregation, tadarus Al Qur'an, and Tahfidz Juz Amma. This habit will form a character that is respectful of the teacher, close to Allah SWT, diligent in praying, love al quran.

Character education applied to students is the essence of the learning process. Islamic religious education is one of the compulsory subjects which contains a lot of character material. So that the implementation of student morals in schools require to be considered properly. This research aims to (1) describe the forms of moral improvement of students at SMP Negeri 7 Bondowoso, (2) describe the steps for improving the morals of students at SMP Negeri 7 Bondowoso. This research using qualitative research methodology and data collection technique by observation, interview, documentation. The data was analyzed by data reduction, display, as well as taking the result and verification technique. The result of this research is the form of students' morals which consists of morals to others and morals to God. Meanwhile, the steps to improve students' morals consist of direct and indirect improvements.

The study aims at describing the transformation of the Balinese satua values for strengthening the alpha generation (Gen A)’s character education in Kindergarten Saraswati Tabanan. The method used was qualitative research with a Cultural Studies approach. The results showed that Masatua (storytelling) was carried out for twenty minutes every “Thursday Cultures"  in Balinese, such as Masatua Siap Selem, and Ni Bawang Teken Ni Kesuna. They were very happy to listen to stories because they were supported by pictures media, the narrator were hilarious and familiar, interspersed with dialogues and Balinese folk songs. Previously, the characters of the Gen A was relatively less independent or less confident, spoiled, and egocentric. After Gen A were given Balinese storytelling continuously, there were process internalization of balinese satua values, which can influence the strengthening of the character of children, such as children become independent, confident, religious, honest, disciplined, tolerant, creative, and responsible. In conclusion, the Balinese satua contains noble moral values that can be told to children with practical ways, and pragmatic manner in a pleasant atmosphere. Masatua was carried out sustainable so that it became a habit, culture and can strengthen the characters of Gen A, and also preservation and development of local wisdom.

Javanese people in the past used piwulang text as a source of behavior. Javanese identity is inherent in conduct and behavior. They believe that the Javanese teachings possess valuable values and character. The purpose of this study is to present the Serat Wulang Putra (SWP) as a source of character education for the modern generation. The Javanese text is one of the sources of character education based on Indonesian culture. This type of research is qualitative research focussing on character education designedt and applied to the modern generation. This research is a descriptive qualitative one. The theory applied in this research is content analysis theory. Serat Wulang Putra (SWP) text is analyzed in order to obtain some values that are useful for modern generation character educations, namely mutual respect, obedience to teachers, obedience to parents, toughness, honesty, responsibility, steadfastness, wisdom, patience, love and care, and carefulness.
