In a globalized economy it is relevant to question whether the Nordic Working Environment (WE) model will remain as the basic and implicit framework for the governance of the WE. This paper explores institutional changes in the governance of the WE, and critically examines how a more explicit and market-oriented framework might influence the governance of the WE in the Nordic countries. Firstly, the paper examines the changes in the governance of the WE at the societal level (Denmark) for the period 1954 - 2007, and identifies institutional logics informing these changes. Secondly, the paper examines changes in the governance of the WE at the level of the construction sector, using case material from four of the largest construction projects completed in Denmark in recent years. The analyses reveal three discrete periods, representing distinct logics influencing the governance of the WE, i.e., the logic of the state, the logic of democracy and the logic of the market. The logic of the state and the logic of democracy represent an implicit framework, whereas the logic of the market entails a shift to a more explicit framework. The shift to a more explicit framework for the governance of the WE, is also identified at the level of the construction sector. This leads to a pivotal shift in the clients' and the construction companies' relationship with the institutional environment in the four large construction projects. From worker representatives being the primary stakeholders, to a shift where the fulcrum of the development of the WE lies between management, the state and stakeholders in the companies' environment. This shift opens up a range of new and more market-oriented approaches to the governance of the WE that seems to challenge the extant Nordic WE model.

The issues of determining the estimated cost of capital construction projects with the involvement of Federal budget funds at the stage of development of project documentation, during verification of the accuracy of determining the estimated cost and the initial (maximum) contract price are considered. On the basis of the assessment of amendments to urban planning legislation for the purpose of implementing a state contract by the contractor ( based on the results of competitive procedures or without competitive procedures by decision of state authorities), the procedure for forming the estimate as part of a state (municipal) contract, the price of which is firm, is presented. For the purpose of mutual settlements between the customer and the contractor for the work performed, the formation of primary accounting documentation, as well as for checking the work performed by regulatory authorities, an example of drawing up an estimate of the state (municipal) contract on the basis of grouping costs according to structural elements and complexes of work is given. The result of the research conducted was the development of regulations and the formation of criteria for their practical application by state bodies, institutions, organizations and other participants in the investment-construction process, as well as recipients of budget funds, who perform the functions of the state (municipal) customer, developer and technical customer.

PurposeWith interest in modern construction methods and new technologies on the rise, construction companies globally are increasingly looking at how to embrace new ideas and engage with new approaches to do things better. A significant amount of work has been carried out investigating the use of individual technologies in the construction sector. However, there is no holistic understanding of the new and emerging technologies that have had proven benefits for construction projects. To fill this gap, this paper aims to provide a landscape of technologies that have been implemented in the construction industry and the benefits associated with their implementation.Design/methodology/approachA systematic review approach and PRISMA guidelines were used. A total of 175 articles published between 2001 and 2020 were identified and thoroughly reviewed.FindingsThe results show that a total of 26 technologies were identified from the literature, and these can be categorised into five groups in terms of their functionality in construction process, namely: (1) data acquisition, (2) analytics, (3) visualisation, (4) communication and (5) design and construction automation. Digital technologies, especially for data acquisition and visualisation, generally appear to underpin and enable innovation in many aspects of construction. Improvements in work efficiency, health and safety, productivity, quality and sustainability have been cited as being the primary benefits of using these technologies. Of these, building information modelling (BIM) appears to be the single most commonly used technology thus far. With the development of computer technology, BIM has constantly been used in combination with other technologies/tools such as unmanned aerial vehicles/systems (unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)/UAS), geographic information systems (GIS), light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and multidimensional modelling to realise a specifically defined benefit.Practical implicationsThe findings from this review would help construction practitioners identify the types of technologies that can be implemented in different stages of construction projects to achieve desired outcomes, and thus, make appropriate decisions on technology investment and adoption. This review also suggests that to reap the full potential that these technologies offer, aside from construction companies changing their culture and business models, corresponding changes in the construction sector’s operating systems related to building regulation, education and training, as well as contracting and procurement are required.Originality/valueThis paper undertakes a comprehensive systematic review of studies on technology implementation in the construction sector published between 2001 and 2020. It is the first attempt internationally to provide a holistic picture of technologies that have been studied and implemented in construction projects.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, it aims to highlight the main factors and items affecting the productivity of construction projects, based on the perceptions of CEOs in construction companies in Iran. Second, the study compares the elicited CEOs’ perceptions against the findings of studies based on the views of such as project managers, middle managers and employees in other levels. Design/methodology/approach – The study drew upon literature on construction work to develop a conceptual model. Further, a total of 60 CEOs from road construction companies were surveyed using a five-point Likert scale questionnaire to generate the data. The collated data were categorised and ranked according to the CEOs perceived level of importance using the relative importance index. Findings – The findings highlight the main factors and items affecting labour productivity in construction projects in Iran as perceived by CEOs, which are mainly of human resources management nature and could be attributed to motivation and managerial policy aspects. The study also recognises that factors associated with the working environment particularly safety and health are perceived as insignificant by Iranian CEOs which could be a concern for the Iranian construction industry. The discussions shed some light on the discrepancies between the perceptions of CEOs and previous studies in regards to major determinants of productivity in the construction context. Originality/value – This study is the first study aiming at discussing the perceptions of CEOs of construction companies active in construction projects in Iran. As such, the study highlights the standpoint of the main decision makers in construction companies in regards to labour productivity in the construction sector. Thus, the key contribution of the present study is providing insight into the perceptions of CEOs, who play the most vital role in strategic development of construction companies whereas previous studies have mostly focused on project or middle managers having a lower influence in determining the strategic plans of companies.

Abstract Due to the economic crisis, the Brazilian construction companies faced the challenge of remaining competitive in the market, therefore they need to be restructured. Construction projects are intrinsically risky because it changes the environment both physically and socially. Given this complexity and the great exposure to risk, this research aims to evaluate the market risks in construction projects through a field research, analyzing the perception and judgment of professionals in the area. The data analysis was performed by a multivariate index based on the statistical technique Factor Analysis that can be ordered by risk factors by degree of importance. It was possible to confirm the degree of correlation between the subgroups of risk factors and to establish a ranking of the degree of their importance, and the first one considered more relevant was the risk of reducing the quality of the workforce. It was also identified the low maturity in risk management in organizations, even though in civil works a thorough risk analysis is required.

In the Turkish Business Environment, construction sector plays a crucial role in the context of overall economic growth and sustainability. However, there have not been effective marketing strategies being implemented in order to enhance the profitability of the sector. This had occurred partly due to the fact that demand had been above the level of supply in the past. In contrast, nowadays fierce competition enforces that many construction projects are being promoted, thereby increasing the level of supply compared to the level of demand unlike what has happened in the past. As a result, genuine marketing strategies need to be emerged in order for construction companies to stay alive in this sector. With a sample size of 152, this paper aims to research the economic growth in terms of Turkish economy and construction sector. Besides, construction types, the biggest markets of construction companies, marketing/management strategies, and problems associated with the sector have been researched and debated with a specific focus on e-marketing/management approaches that have recently been revealed.

Projects in the construction sector are reputed for poor H&S records when compared to other similar industries. This can be attributed among other things to an uncontrolled working environment, risk, workers' behaviour in relation to H&S commitment, cultural and religious beliefs, and uncertainties inherent in projects. Risk and hazards arising due to poor H&S practices result in injuries and fatalities in few cases. The aim of this study is to explore the perceptions of workers regarding H&S on construction sites. A combination of interviews and observations was conducted in the study. The participants in the study are mainly production workers (ironworkers, masons, carpenters, roofers, and electricians) engaged in construction projects. The findings of the study reveal that workers view productive activities on construction sites as hazardous and risky. However, lack of understanding the use of PPE affects its use. This perception may also be attributed to inadequate training, socio-economic realities, cultural and religious beliefs. Therefore, there is a need for a localised H&S certification and awareness programmes to foster a commitment to improving H&S at construction sites. Further research is required to understand the influence of stakeholders on H&S practices in the Nigerian construction industry.Keywords: Health and Safety, Nigeria, Perceptions, Workers.

The issues of economic development in conditions of high risks are becoming highly relevant. Modern trends in the development of the construction industry, as a multiplier of the economic development of the state, form a new system of requirements for the management of operational processes and strategic vectors of the construction industry, both at the macroeconomic level and at the level of individual regional systems and individual enterprises. The trend in the development of society and their influence on the formation of trends in the construction industry were analyzed in the article, taking into account their significant impact on the formation of risk management mechanisms for construction projects. Technologization processes were identified among the main trends in the development of the economy. They directly affect not only the operational work on the implementation of the construction project, but also form the need for personnel of appropriate qualifications, a decrease in the need for labor and an increase in the need for highly qualified specialists with the skills of working in the information technology system and automated construction management systems. The technology of commissioning modular housing, its advantages and disadvantages is considered in detail. The development of green construction is highlighted as a separate trend, which is an important factor in sustainable development and ensuring the competitiveness of construction enterprises. A new trend in the development of regional construction systems has been identified, namely, entry into the traditionally segmented regional markets of foreign investment construction companies, which create additional competitive factors for domestic enterprises. Accordingly, according to certain trends, risk systems were formulated, which are relatively new for the construction market, respectively, an analysis of the mechanisms for their minimization and avoidance was developed. The article analyzes the risks of the construction sector in accordance with the analysis of trends and tendencies in the development of the construction industry. For each block of risk elements, possible forms of response and warning have been identified. According to the analysis, recommendations are given for managing the risks of construction companies. The analyzed risks are considered from the point of view of the formation of mechanisms of state regulatory policy in order to form an effective construction system at the state and regional levels.

Most of the existing supply chain management methods and systems are being transferred to construction regardless of the specifics of companies in the construction sector. Numerous complex factors such as ecological, social and economic are required for the continuous evaluation in the modern management of construction sector. The provided studies and the research to examine sustainable supply chain management in construction sector from a holistic perspective, concentrating on mostly long-term sustainable decision-making by the construction company rather than being centered only on the supply chain management for construction projects. This paper identifies a list of sustainability indicators for examining the supply chains of construction companies. Those indicators were categorized and assigned to one or a couple groups by reviewing their use in the previous literature agreeing to the reasoning to way better reflect the SSCM principle of their use in construction companies. The use of indicators can help develop strategies for the construction sector for sustainable policy makers and construction company managers.

As the COVID-19 outbreak affected the whole world, the epidemic had positive and negative effects on the construction industry. Epidemic; Information leakage with working from home conditions, problems of logistics chains for the transportation of materials to the construction site, has brought along special risks according to many new processes. Within the scope of this study, it is aimed to investigate the effects of the COVID-19 epidemic on construction projects, new risks that occur and applications used against these risks together with digital tools. In the literature, the importance of innovative digital technologies for risk management is emphasized. In this study; It reduces the epidemic-specific risks that occur in the construction projects of innovative digital applications; how, why and which actors were involved. In this context, one-to-one interviews and a survey field study were conducted with construction industry experts for data collection. This research; It will guide the future positions of the sector by identifying and classifying new risks that occur specific to the COVID-19 outbreak process in the construction sector, and analyzing which digital tools and methods to be used to cope with these risks. In line with the research, it will be ensured that construction companies are better prepared against the threats and opportunities posed by the risks.
