A special place in the assessment of the physical fitness of university students is given to the state of individual muscle groups, including the level of strength and strength endurance of the abdominal muscles. Developed abdominal muscles play a significant role in maintaining a high level of physical performance of female students in health-improving aerobics classes, which are especially popular among girls. At present, the insufficient value of the power load in physical education classes and the low level of independent motor activity of student youth lead to a decrease in the power indicators of the abdominal muscles. The need to assess the strength endurance of the torso muscles of students involved in health-improving aerobics, as well as the choice of means and methods for its development, determined the purpose of this study, aimed at determining the initial level of development of strength endurance of the abdominal muscles of 1–4 year students. The analysis of the values obtained as a result of the fulfillment of the test task “Raising the torso from the supine position” in one minute by the 1–4 year students showed a significant discrepancy in the development of strength endurance of the abdominal muscles (Ρ < 0,05). The highest values in torso flexion were registered in the 2nd year students, after which these indicators returned to the initial level shown in the first year. In accordance with the results obtained, a scale for assessing the level of strength endurance of the abdominal muscles of female students engaged in health-improving aerobics are developed, as well as theoretical and practical aspects related to the development of strength and strength endurance of the abdominal muscles in university students are analyzed.

SummaryA survey was made of demographic and social characteristics of patients referred to a Student Health psychiatrist over a two year period. These patients were compared with a group attending Student Health physicians. Significantly over-represented in the psychiatric group were: medical and dental students; students who had repeated an academic year; students over 30 years of age; Roman Catholic students; and students who were totally financially dependent on their parents. Findings by others suggesting that first-year and female students would be over-represented in the psychiatric group were not borne out.

Aim: This article presents cross-sectional data collected from the population of first-year students at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn in 2000–2016. The aim of the study was to investigate changes in the following trends among university students after Poland’s accession to the European Union (2004): (1) alcohol consumption, (2) alcoholic beverage preferences, and (3) attitudes towards alcohol. Method: The study relied on data from anonymous surveys conducted every two years between 2000 and 2016 among a representative sample of first-year university students. A total of 9778 individuals (4264 males and 5514 females) completed anonymous questionnaires during the period under analysis. Statistical analyses were performed by comparing the frequency of answers given by male and female students in the first and last year of the study. Results: There was a steady linear decrease in the percentages of abstainers of both genders and a regular linear increase in the number of female students abusing alcohol to blackout level in the analysed period of 2000 to 2016. The respondents’ preferences for alcohol brands became more diversified (with foreign types of strong liquors becoming more popular), and their attitudes towards alcohol availability on campus were liberalised. Conclusions: Our data complement the gaps in empirical research on alcohol consumption among university students in European countries. They point to greater homogenisation of Polish drinking culture and convergence in male and female drinking behaviours.

The authors studied the state of the indicators of the immune system in the dynamics of their first year in medical school at the female students aged 15-17 years, recognized the results of medical examination of apparently healthy. In characterizing the state of cell-mediated immunity it was revealed reduction of immune-biological resistance in healthy students, manifested by the weakening of T-and B-immunity with severe tensions in the anti-viral defense, as evidenced by the significant increase in the peripheral blood cyto-toxic T lymphocytes [CD8 (+)] and NK-cells [CD16 (+)] and a decrease in the functional activity of neutrophilic granulocytes (NG). It is important that even after staying on vacation for the new academic year, these figures do not reach the initial level and remained statistically significant lower level, although there was some tendency to normalize. Thus, the authors assume that the identified changes may involve a violation of the processes of adaptation of students caused by the restructuring of dynamic stereotypes in the transition from school to the secondary vocational education with unusual difficulties on training exercise, which may be inadequate functionality of a growing and developing organism.

Social support is considered to be an important element of relationships. Previous studies have provided evidence that low social support is closely related to poor physical and mental health. Gender has an important influence on social support for university students; however, research on the level of social support and differences in social support by gender for Vietnamese university students is still lacking. The current study aims to investigate the level of social support and gender differences in social support for Vietnamese university students. A total of 859 Vietnamese university students have completed the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS). The results revealed that Vietnamese university students have a high level of social support and that male students have a lower level of social support than female students. Factors that may contribute to gender differences in social support are discussed. These findings have important implications for the development of interventions to provide gender-based social support.

Aim. The article is aimed at evaluating physiological adaptation (physical development, physical fitness and sickness rate) in first-year female university students not involved in sports to the urban conditions of the Kirov region. Materials and methods. Five hundred and thirty first-year female students not involved in sports (Vyatka State University, Kirov) participated in the study. Their physical development was estimated with the help of five anthropometric and eight physiometric parameters used for calculating 24 indices. To assess physical fitness, five types of tests were performed measuring general stamina, quickness, strength and other parameters. To evaluate the influence of urban environment, the participants were divided into three groups depending on the population of their home cities: “big city”, “small town”, “village”. Results. First-year female students, who used to live in a big city before entering the university, have smaller chest circumference at rest and at maximum inhalation/exhalation than the girls of the same height and weight, who used to live in small towns or villages. Urban environment influences physical fitness, which results in generally low stamina and strength typical for females living in Kirov. Conclusion. The results obtained show that the increase in urbanization puts pressure on the mechanisms of physiological adaptation in first-year female students who used to live in small towns and villages before entering the university.

Despite the negative psychological effects associated with the transition to university, little is known about the relationship between homesickness and family functioning. One hundred first-year university students completed a questionnaire incorporating the Dundee Relocation Inventory (Fisher & Hood, 1987) measure of homesickness, and a measure of family functioning. A high level of homesickness was reported among students, with 18% of the variance in homesickness scores accounted for by family cohesion and chronological age. Implications for further research are discussed within the context of an unambiguous operationalization of homesickness and its effects.

This study attempts to identify aspects of the orthography of Hadiyyisa (one of the Highland East Cushitic languages) that need to be improved and to suggest possible solutions to this. Accordingly, a short Hadiyyisa paragraph was dictated to and was written by randomly selected elementary, high school and first-year university students. The results showed that the students had a problem of distinguishing phonological quantity, that is, between simplex and geminate consonants as well as between short and long vowels. Consequently, representing geminates and long vowels as simple segments occurred frequently. Some aspects of orthographic inconvenience which require adjustments were encountered and solutions were suggested from the perspectives of regularity and economy. Yet another constraint was suggested in relation to the transferability of incompatible knowledge of Hadiyyisa to English. The performance of female students, especially at high school and university levels, was found to be lower than that of the male students and the study suggests that this needs to be further investigated.
