ABSTRACT Objectives: to identify the challenges to actions to contain bacterial resistance. Methods: cross-sectional study, carried out in 30 large-sized hospitals in Minas Gerais, from 2018 to 2019. The professionals were interviewed, and the environment and actions to prevent bacterial resistance were observed. Results: regarding the knowledge of health care professionals about the measures of bacterial resistance prevention, 78.3% did not correctly describe the five moments of hand hygiene, and 76.6% did not correctly describe the measures to control bacterial resistance. The simple hygiene of hands, followed by alcohol rubbing was predominant (48.3%) among workers, and soap dispensers were next to alcohol dispensers in 58.3% of the nursing stations in care units. Conclusions: the insufficient knowledge from the professionals, which is a failure related to the physical structure and to personal protection equipment, are factors that difficult the adherence to measures to contain bacterial resistance in hospitals.

Abstract Objective To investigate the patient safety culture regarding intravenous therapy in parts of tertiary hospitals in Guangzhou, China. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted. A total of 333 medical staffs members from eight hospitals in Guangzhou were included in our study using convenience sampling. An evaluation about the patient safety culture regarding intravenous therapy was conducted. Results The summarized results show that the total and level one items’ scores are greater than 4.3 points (the full mark is 5 points). The lowest scoring of the five level one items is for the hospital’s security resources (4.53±0.526), and the highest is for the hospital’s safety management commitment (4.65±0.445). Among the 25 secondary entries, the four lowest-scoring entries are “doctors who can master the knowledge of drug efficacy and adverse reactions” (4.44±0.622), “doctors who can master the knowledge of the choice of medicine” (4.45±0.621), “a guarantee of sufficient human resources” (4.46±0.647), and “doctors who can master the knowledge related to the observation and complications with the treatment of intravenous therapy operation” (4.435±0.634). Conclusions The patient safety culture regarding intravenous treatment in parts of tertiary hospitals in Guangzhou is promising, but there are still shortcomings, including the need to increase relevant resources, such as equipment facilities, training resources, and especially human input.

Personal protection equipment (PPE) is used by farmers when dealing with crop protection products. Owing to its relevance, this survey assessed the status of PPE use by the farmers. The survey focused on two districts (Jeshore and Rajshahi) of Bangladesh. Descriptive research design was used to achieve the survey objective including both quantitative and qualitative techniques. Findings revealed that the mean age of respondents was 39.5 years with an average annual income of BDT 194,540.0 (USD 2,434.8), having very poor training exposure, but expressed positive perception on PPE use. Upon exposure to any crop protection product, the farmers wash it off immediately, and mostly clean with soap and water within one hour of spray completion. Frequently experienced difficulty was skin burn, and whenever contamination or poisoning occurs local domestic first aid methods were adopted or contact was made to village quacks. Qualitative findings revealed similar information, however, in addition, farmers especially, youth were found to have adopted “traditional PPE,” which involves wearing of trousers, long sleeve shirts, polythene in place of hand gloves and cotton napkin to cover their faces. It was suggested that organized campaigns and effective information dissemination would encourage adequate and proper application of PPE. Use of PPE becomes inevitable for farmers’ safety with advancement in science and technology and its consequential effects. It is, therefore, obvious that the all stakeholders in agriculture and agri-allied industries take awareness creation and training on PPE use as part of their core agenda to avert hazard and ensure safety.

Results Different positive and negative feelings were identified by the health workers who participated in facing this health emergency; emphasizing elements such as the need for Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) that, when deficient or lacking, generate concerns that raise questions about the medical/epidemiological attention to the pandemic. Based on an analysis of feelings, 8 main feelings were identified, which by frequency of appearing were: distrust(24.83%), fear(21.97%), sadness(12.45%), anticipation(11.65%), anger(10.71%), disgust(9.69%), joy(4.97%) and surprise(3.72%) which influence health workers in training and their wrok performance day to day. Concerning their positive and negative evaluation of their experience facing this health emergency, 13.83% of participants had a positive perception about participating in this kind of health emergency to support the country, 49.94% showed a negative evaluation, and 36.23% kept a neutral evaluation about their participation. Conclusions The health workers in training in Mexico gave a negative evaluation of the management of the health emergency. Distrust as a response to the absence of timely information from the education/health institutions, as well as concern about lack of personal protection equipment/inputs, are the main conflicts reported. We must establish a credible globally relevant continuity plan for the education of health care personnel in training, facing emergencies and disasters, so that next time we are properly prepared.
