Persons with disabilities in Indonesia still experience negative stigma in society. Children with special needs are seen as burdensome, troublesome, embarrassing and useless. Because parents are embarrassed, the child is hidden sometimes the child is not schooled. To have children with special needs is a challenge for parents. Acceptance on the children condition is the main key in determining attitudes and taking steps needed for optimizing the children’s growth and development. Unfortunately, many parents experience obstructions in accepting the condition of their children. This results in conflict within the parents themselves, with their spouses, or with other members of the family. This acceptance process itself has to go through several stages, namely denial, bargaining, anger, depression and acceptance. Many parents live in denial and anger before they can accept their children’s condition. Parents’ knowledge and understanding about their children’s special needs is one of the supporting factors which lead to acceptance. Yet the fact is, many parents especially from the middle and lower classes lack of information and believe more in superstitions in society. This fact surely hinders the steps needed to accept their children’s special condition and take proper care of them. The presence of support group which consist of parents of children with special needs and those concerned in the development of special needs children is a place for comfort, emotional release and information exchange for the parents.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has been declared a global pandemic. The consequences of this pandemic, among them changes in routine, quarantine, school closures and more, place children with special needs and their families at risk of severe emotional distress. Therefore, the present study used an online survey to measure stress, anxiety and depression levels as well as concerns related to the COVID-19 outbreak among 94 parents of children with special needs (mean age = 41.6 years, SD = 6.59; 83% female) and 79 parents raising a typically developing child (mean age = 40.85 years, SD = 7.40; 85% female). We also examined whether the use of adaptive and maladaptive emotion regulation (ER) strategies (reappraisal and suppression, respectively) predicts emotional distress among the two parent groups. The results indicate that compared to parents of TD children, parents of children with special needs reported more concerns about the COVID19 outbreak and more symptoms of emotional distress (depression, anxiety and stress). The use of adaptive and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies moderated the association between concerns arising from the COVID-19 outbreak and emotional distress. In addition, the habitual use of emotion regulation strategies predicted distress only among parents of children with special needs but not among parents of TD children. These findings highlight the role played by emotion regulation in maintaining well-being at times of crisis among vulnerable populations, such as families raising children with special needs.

Individualised education programmes (IEP) will be practiced with children with special needs (CWSN) and their families. The main factor for IEP’s success is the participation of the family and also, their children. In this study, views and suggestions about participation of families of CWSN in their IEP processes are examined. The research is based on qualitative research. Five mothers and a grandmother with CWSN were participated; data are collected via semi-structured interview technique and analysed with inductive analysis technique. Also, the participants who didn’t participate in the IEP weren’t even aware of the legal obligation that they had to and their children’s IEP, they weren’t in cooperation with the teacher in that process, and teachers didn’t show the progress in the children to the families even if they recorded that. The study explored the mediating role of resilience in the relationship between spirituality and subjective well-being of 107 Ghanaian biological parents raising children with special needs. Results from mediational analyses revealed that spirituality indirectly influenced life satisfaction, positive affect and negative affect through resilience. Specifically, greater levels of spirituality predicted greater resilience, which successively led to greater life satisfaction, greater positive affect and reduced negative affect. These findings emphasize the necessity of targeting parents’ well-being through resilience to help them deal with the burden of providing care for their children with special needs.
