This paper aims determine the efficacy of Kamias (Averrhoa bilimbi) fruit as a ripening agent for Cavendish banana (Musa acuminata). A quantitative experimental research design was employed in the study. Unripe Cavendish bananas and Kamias fruits were procured from the local market and the fruits were extracted to three different concentrations. Calcium carbide was used as positive control. Six bunches of unripe bananas were allowed to ripe and labeled according to the type of treatment. Ripe bananas were then subjected to sensory evaluation, titratable acidity and Benedict’s tests. Results showed that the use of Kamias fruit allowed ripening of banana for 76 hours while a 25-75% concentration of Kamias fruit extract allowed ripening for 76-96 hours. The bananas treated with Kamias Extract 75% had the highest level of acceptability and titratable acidity while the bananas treated with Kamias fruit had the highest level of reducing sugar. One-Way MANOVA reported that there is a significant difference in the duration of ripening, level of acceptability, titratable acidity and level of reducing sugar when treated with various ripening agents (p<0.05).

Objective: The aim of this research was to investigate the potential of Sonneratia alba fruit extract to prevent atherosclerosis formation. Methods: Eighteen male Wistar rats were divided into standard or negative control (S), positive control (P) and treatment (T) groups. Atherosclerosis was induced in groups P and T by orally administering a single dose of Vitamin D3 and a high-fat diet for three days. Sonneratia alba fruit extract was given to the T-group for three days. Lipids were enzymatically measured and foam cells were counted in 10 fields of a microscopic view of the abdominal aorta. Results: This study showed higher cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglyceride levels in the T-group, compared to the other groups. The average number of foam cells in the S-, P-and T-groups were 11.8±3.3 cells, 21.2±2.2 cells and 11.7±2.9 cells, respectively. Statistical analysis with One-Way Anova showed a significant difference in the average number of foam cells (p = 0.042). Further analysis showed a significant difference in the average number of foam cells in groups S with P (p = 0.041) and P with T (p = 0.024). Conclusion: Sonneratia alba fruit extract showed a potential effect to inhibit atherosclerosis process but could not suppress lipid levels in the blood.

Background. This study sought to investigate the antioxidant and antihyperglycemic properties ofMusa sapientum(Latundan banana) (MSL),Musa acuminata(Cavendish banana) (MAC), andMusa acuminate(Red Dacca) (MAR).Materials and Methods.The sugar, starch, amylose, and amylopectin contents and glycemic index (GI) of the three banana cultivars were determined. Furthermore, total phenol and vitamin C contents andα-amylase andα-glucosidase inhibitory effects of banana samples were also determined.Results. MAC and MAR had the highest starch, amylose, and amylopectin contents and estimated glycemic index (eGI) with no significant different while MSL had the lowest. Furthermore, MAR (1.07 mg GAE/g) had a higher total phenol content than MAC (0.94 mg GAE/g) and MSL (0.96 mg GAE/g), while there was no significant difference in the vitamin C content. Furthermore, MAR had the highestα-amylase (IC50= 3.95 mg/mL) inhibitory activity while MAC had the least (IC50= 4.27 mg/mL). Moreover, MAC and MAR inhibited glucosidase activity better than MSL (IC503.47 mg/mL).Conclusion. The low sugar, GI, amylose, and amylopectin contents of the three banana cultivars as well as theirα-amylase andα-glucosidase inhibitory activities could be possible mechanisms and justification for their recommendation in the management of type-2 diabetes.

The number of artificially ripened pineapples is outnumbered than the naturally ripened pineapples. However, there is a lack of understanding between artificially ripened and naturally ripened pineapples. Thus the inquiry was anticipated to explore the physicochemical changes and organoleptic acceptability of the naturally ripened and artificially ripened pineapples. Farmers used different chemicals such as calcium carbide, ethylene, besides growth hormones to reduce production loss. Here we evaluated the content of moisture, ash, protein, fat, crude fiber, reducing sugar, total sugar, titratable acidity, sucrose, and vitamin C in both naturally ripened and artificially ripened pineapples. Artificially ripened pineapples showed a significantly lower vitamin C than naturally ripened ones, but arsenic content was nil in both samples. In the case of color and appearance, there was no significant difference between the two samples, but in case of the other organoleptic properties, such as flavor, sweetness, sourness, the natural one was more acceptable. Thus naturally ripened pineapples are more beneficial to consumers than artificially ripened ones.

The present outdoor experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation of lapsi Choerospondias axillaris (Roxburgh, 1832) on haematological parameters in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss in Nepal. The lapsi fruits were obtained from local market of Kathmandu. The feeding trail was conducted for 90 days. About 270 trout with similar body weight (5±1g) were distributed randomly at the rate of 15 fishes per cage (1m3) into 18 cages placed in raceway pond. Six practical diets containing 40% protein were prepared as T1 (0.0 g kg-1) T2 (0.1 g kg-1), T3 (0.2 g kg-1), T4 (0.4 g kg-1), T5 (0.8 g kg-1) and T6 (1.6 g kg-1) supplemented by the ethanol extract of lapsi fruits along with other usual ingredients viz. fish meal, wheat flour and cod liver oil etc. At the end of the experiment the haematological parameters were measured. A significant difference (P< 0.05) in haematological parameters was observed between the treated diets fed groups to that of control diet fed group. Total erythrocytes count (RBC), Haematocrit (Hct), Haemoglobin concentration (Hb), and erythrocyte indexes (MCV, MCH and MCHC) were found significantly higher in T4 (0.4 %) diet fed trout as compared to the control. A minimum of 0.4 % (0.4g kg-1) lapsi fruit extract in fish feeds gave more increase in haematological parameters of Oncorhynchus mykiss. Inclusion of lapsi fruit extract at 0.4 % concentration is therefore could be used effectively in aquaculture.

Buah naga super merah (Hylocereus costaricencis)saat ini dibudidayakan oleh Kebun Benih Holtikultura Baturaden sebagai produk unggulan yang berpotensi meningkatkan kesejahteraan masyarakat Banyumas. Buah naga super merah diyakini memiliki efek anti bakteri oleh karena kandungan polifenol yang terdapat pada daging buah maupun kulit buah naga. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat daya hambat ekstrak buah naga super merah terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri Streptococcus mutans yang merupakan salah satu pencetus terjadinya penyakit periodontal. Sebagai langkah awal, dilakukan uji determinasi buah naga super merah untuk memastikan bahwa buah naga yang digunakan adalah buah naga super merah. Selanjutnya dilakukan pembuatan ekstrak dengan metode maserasi. Hasil penelitian antar perlakuan menunjukan bahwa tidak terdapat perbedaan daya hambat bakteri yang signifikan (p>0,05) antara ekstrak buah naga super merah, kontrol positif dan kontrol negatif. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa ekstrak buah naga super merah dapat digunakan sebagai bahan antibakteri dalam terapi periodontal. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan akan menjadi acuan untuk langkah berikutnya yaitu pengujian efek anti bakteri larutan buah naga super merah terhadap akumulasi plak pada rongga mulut.   Super red dragon fruit (Hylocereus costaricencis) is currently cultivated by the Baturraden Horticultural Seed Garden as a superior product that has the potential to improve the welfare of the Banyumas community. Dragon fruit is believed to have anti-bacterial effects because of the polyphenol content found in fruit flesh and dragon fruit skin. This study aims to see the inhibitory power of super red dragon fruit extract on the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria which is one of the triggers of periodontal disease. As a first step, a determination of dragon fruit is determined to ensure that the dragon fruit used is super red dragon fruit. Furthermore, the extract was made by maceration method. The results of the study between treatments showed that there was no significant difference in bacterial inhibition (p> 0.05) between super red dragon fruit extract, positive control and negative control. This study concluded that super red dragon fruit extract can be used as anti bacterial agent for periodontal therapy. The results of this study are expected to be a reference for the next research, analyzing the antibacterial effect of super red dragon fruit solution to the accumulation of plaque on the oral cavity

Shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.) has been known as traditional medicine. Shallot which has same genus with garlic(Allium sativum L.) contains allicin that is also found in garlic and has been suspected has fungicidal activity toCandida albicans. It is supported by several researches. Therefore, shallot is suspected has antifungal activity too.The aim of this research was to know antifungal activity of shallot’s water extortion againsts Candida albicans invitro. This was a laboratory experimental research which used completely randomized design, with diffusion method.Shallot’s water extortion was devided into three concentrations, there were 50%, 100% and 200%. Ketoconazole 2%was positive control and aquadest was negative control. The result of this research based on analysis of varians(Anova), there was significant difference between several treatments and was confirmed with Duncan New MultipleRange Test (DNMRT) p<0,05, there was significant difference between 100% shallot’s water extortion with othertreatments, but there was no significant difference between 50% shallot’s water extortion with 200% shallot’s. Theconclusion was shallot’s water extortion had antifungal activity againsts Candida albicans with the best concentration100%, but it was lower than ketoconazole 2%.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anti-fatigue activity of maca hydroalcoholic extract (ME), which mainly contains macamides and polysaccharides. ME was prepared by circumfluence extraction with enzymatic pre-treatment. Anti-fatigue activity of ME was investigated in weight-loaded forced swimming mice, with pure macamides and commercially available maca tablet as positive control. Compared with normal group, pure macamides treatment group could prolong the swimming time to exhaustion, but there was no statistically significant difference (P > 0.05); while ME (middle-dose and high-dose groups) could effectively prolong the swimming durations (P < 0.05). Supplementation with pure macamides significantly decreased blood lactic acid (BLA), whereas ME significantly increased hepatic glycogen (HG), decreased BLA, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) compared with those in normal control (P < 0.05). The results suggested that the anti-fatigue effect of ME was better than that of pure macamides, which can be explained by the increase of glycogen storage and the reduction of metabolites accumulation.

Abstract Background Diabetes mellitus is a major public health issue related to the irregular metabolism of carbohydrates, protein, and fat. It occurs due to insufficient insulin production and insulin action. Cucumis melo possesses several biological properties including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antihypothyroidism, and antiangiogenic activities. The objective of the present study was to determine the antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic activities of Cucumis melo var. momordica fruit extract on experimental animals. Result Results show that treatment with C. melo fruit extract and fraction caused a reduction in blood glucose levels. Cucumis melo toluene fraction (CMTF) exhibited a significant (*P < 0.05) reduction of blood glucose level on the 28th day, i.e., 122 mg/dL, in comparison with the positive control group (streptozotocin (STZ)). However, the extract of C. melo showed less significant results in comparison with CMTF. Triglyceride, LDL, and VLDL levels were increased chronically due to STZ and were significantly (*P < 0.05) restored to 84.16, 86.97, and 19.73, respectively, by CMTF in comparison with the positive control group (STZ in the dose of 55 mg/kg). The extract-treated groups also showed similar results as CMTF, but their efficacy was lesser than CMTF. Conclusion It is can be concluded that C. melo fruits can be used as an effective antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic drug. Graphical abstract

Abstract In this study, essential (Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Na, P, Zn), and non-essential (Al, Ni, Pb) element contents of the drinking and baby water samples which are sold in the local market and tap water samples in Istanbul were examined. It was determined that elements of Cr, Cu, Fe, P, Zn, Al, and Ni were below detection limits in all water samples. Among the non-essential elements analyzed in water samples, Pb was the only detected element. At the same time, the percentages that meet the daily element requirements of infants were also calculated. As a result of the evaluations made, there is no significant difference in infant nutrition between baby waters and other drinking waters in terms of the element content.

The effect of infrared radiation (IR) on the physicochemical characteristics, pectin methylesterase activity (PME), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) content, microbiological activity, color, and sensory aspects on black lime juice was studied. IR was compared to conventional thermal heating (CTH) in batch infrared extraction pasteurizer, designed to allow both infrared and conventional heating. IR resulted in a reduction in pH and Brix values and a mild increase in titratable acidity, as compared to CTH and control. After 60 days at 5 °C, the ascorbic acid percentage was decreased by 24.90%, 29.75%, and 58.31% in the control, IR and CTH, respectively. The total amount of phenols in juice treated with IR was higher as compared to CTH and control, while there was a significant decrease in the antioxidant activity. The statistical analysis reflected significantly low (p < 0.05) activity of PME for IR samples as compared to CTH and control. The amount of Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in all juice samples steadily increased during the storage at 5 °C in 60 days. The microbial content of control was 3.85 log cfu/mL after 60 days at 5 °C, while it was 2.1 log cfu/mL for IR which reflected a significant difference between the IR, CTH, and control samples. Additionally, color and sensory analysis of IR treated sample when compared to control, reflected similar attributes. Overall, IR was found to be an excellent substitute for the preservation of black lime juice as a rapid pasteurization technique with less heat exposure; wherein the nutrition and health benefits of the juice could be maintained for a minimum period of 60 days.
