Decisions about instruction, research, or policy often require the interpretation of student assessment scores. Increasingly, attitudinal variables are included in an assessment strategy, and it is important to ensure that interpretations of students' attitudinal status are based on instrument scores that apply similarly for diverse students. In this study, a shortened version of the Test of Science Related Attitudes (TOSRA) was used to gather validity evidence based on the internal structure of the instrument in an introductory chemistry course. Using measurement invariance analysis by sex and race/ethnicity, it was found that the internal structure holds by sex, but it did not hold by race/ethnicity in our sample. Further analysis revealed problems with the normality scales for Black students in our sample. Also, this study examined the relationship between the scales of the Shortened TOSRA, achievement in chemistry, and prior math knowledge. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) it was found that two of the scales, attitude toward inquiry and career interest in science, have a small but significant influence on students' achievement in chemistry. This study highlights the importance of examining if the scores apply similarly for different groups of students in a population, since the scores of these assessments could be used to make decisions that will affect the students.

The purposes of this study were (1) The comprehension of the fourth grade teachers about the scientific approach and integrated thematic learning; (2) the integrated thematic lesson plan with a scientific approach; (3) the implemented steps of the scientific approach to the core activities of the learning process; (4) the activities of learners in the integrated thematic learning with a scientific approach; (5) the attitudes of students in the integrated thematic learning with a scientific approach; and (6) the factors supporting and inhibiting to the application of scientific approach in the integrated thematic learning. The approach used was a qualitative descriptive approach. The instrument of collecting data consisted of nonparticipant observation, interview and documentation study. The data Triangulation was done in two ways which were triangulation sources and triangulation methods. The results showed that the designed lesson plan was an integrated thematic scientific approach. The learning process was done according to the core activities with the scientific approach activity steps. The activities of students have also been according to the steps in the scientific approach. It is needed the supporting factors such as facilities and infrastructure to succeed the learning. Learning kit of problem-based learning in the learning cycle 5E oriented to mathematical reasoning and communication skillsAbstractThe purpose of this research was to produce a learning kit of Problem Based Learning (PBL) in Learning Cycle 5E (engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, evaluation) which was oriented to mathematical reasoning and communication skills with good quality in terms of validity, practicality, and effectiveness. This research was a development study that uses the ADDIE development model. The test subjects in this study were 32 students of 8th-grade from a state junior high school in Bantul, Indonesia. The instruments used in this study include validation sheets to assess validity, teacher and student assessment sheets to assess practicality, tests of mathematical reasoning and communication skills to measure effectiveness. This research produces a PBL-based learning kit in Learning Cycle 5E which was oriented to mathematical reasoning and communication skills. The validation results show that the lesson plan and worksheet that were developed meet the valid criteria with excellent categories. The practicality of the developed learning kit reaches good categories based on the results of the teacher and student assessment. Learning devices reach effective categories based on tests of mathematical reasoning and communication skills. The percentage of the number of students who reached the minimum high category on the reasoning test reached 93.75% and the communication test reached 87.5%. Thus, it can be concluded that the learning kit developed was suitable for use in mathematics learning.

Teaching speaking of descriptive text in vocational high school should be in systematic way. Based on the syllabus of K13, the students had to master the generic structure and organization in descriptive text. The researcher tried to explore the teaching-learning process in the eleventh grade of SMK Kartika. This research used descriptive qualitative research. It focused on understanding the teaching-learning process from the teacher’s viewpoint of this research. This descriptive research required the researcher to explain scientifically the fact, events, and characteristics of the subject. The teacher had prepared the entire requirement of teaching and learning equipment such as attendance list, syllabus, lesson plan, media, and evaluation form. Then the teacher used the picture a media in teaching speaking descriptive text. Most of the students at eleventh graders could overcome that problem during learning speaking descriptive text. 90 % of students could comprehend the material well and 10% of students could not comprehend the material.  It indicated that some of the students understood the teacher’s explanation about the descriptive text.
