COVID 19 represented a major challenge for many educators, with teachers needing to pivot rapidly to using online learning tools in order to stay connected with their students. This was particularly relevant for teachers in the process of completing their Initial Teacher Education (ITE), whose programmes of study did not include online teaching components. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a module for teaching in online and blended learning environments for 244 post-primary teachers in ITE. This study begins by examining the impact of COVID-19 and the resulting pivot to online learning, this includes an overview of the challenges associated with online teaching. Next, the authors explain the module in detail, outlining the tools, strategies and activities provided for student teachers. This included peer-evaluated online micro-teaching components - which formed a major part of the learning. Data collection involved a questionnaire which gathered student teachers’ perceptions of the module and its approaches, the impact it had on their ability to teach during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the knowledge and skills useful for future practice. Findings suggested that the implementation of the developed module was successful in preparing student teachers to teach online, providing them with the tools and confidence necessary for success. Improvements suggested the development of differentiated pathways for student teachers who are more experienced with online teaching.

Understanding the readiness of students to undertake online education has been viewed as a necessary precursor to ensuring their success in an online learning environment. To serve this purpose, a number of Online Learning Readiness (OLR) assessment tools have been developed. However, the relationship between the students’ readiness, assessed by these tools, and the actual online learning outcomes has not been well established. This chapter presents a study that assesses the Online Learning Readiness (OLR) of a sample group of postgraduate engineering students and determines whether there is any association between the level of readiness and the extent to which the students use online learning tools. The research employed a questionnaire survey targeting a group of postgraduate students undertaking a project management course at Griffith University in Queensland, Australia. Based on the survey data from 30 valid responses, it was found that the sampled students had different levels of OLR and can be clustered into three main groups: developed, less-developed, and developing OLR, and that the higher level of OLR can be associated with more extensive use of online learning tools.

The availability of ICT-based learning tools is one of the supports for the creation of classes that implement E-learning. The learning process can occur if there are at least two main elements, namely: (1) people who learn, and (2) learning resources. Learning resources include people (resource persons), tools (hardware), materials (software), environment (background, settings) and others. Learning tools are one type of learning resource and become an element that has a very important role in e-learning. There is no e-larning without the availability of learning tools, so the ability of teachers to develop ICT-based learning tools becomes very important. This learning device is often also called an internet-based learning device or online learning device. Three main characteristics of this learning tool include: (1) presenting multi media, (2) preparing, processing and presenting information, and (3) hyperlinks. The nature of this online learning tool has the advantage that it can be accessed anytime and anywhere as long as it has internet access, so that the teacher has the ability to develop ICT-based learning tools. These characteristics make the source of learning tools very rich, and the availability of appropriate ICT-based guided inquiry learning model tools is very much needed as a relevant learning resource.
