Abstract Background The present study was conducted to assess some specific factors related to anthropometric indices in a representative sample of Iranian mid-adolescents. It also aimed to investigate the relationship between three anthropometric indices using a multivariate multilevel approach. Methods This study was conducted among 2538 students (1286 boys) aged 14 - 20 years old, who were randomly selected among 16 high schools by multi-stage random sampling procedure from 4 education districts of Shiraz, Iran. Data on demographic characteristics and anthropometric measures were collected. Anthropometric indices were estimated by the calibrated tools. A multivariate multilevel model was used to assess the predictor variables associated with obesity measures of the triceps (TST), abdominal (AST), and subscapular (SST) skinfold thickness. Results In this study, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was estimated to be 10.2 and 5.1%, respectively. Hierarchical models showed that, the outcome variables were correlated at the child and district levels. Positive associations were observed between the sex, family history of obesity, and moderate and high Socio-Economic Status (SES) with three anthropometric indices. Moreover, there were positive associations between moderate to vigorous physical activities with AST and SST, but they were not statistically significant at a significance level of 0.05.Conclusions Our findings revealed that, TST, AST, and SST could be useful indices for measuring the adiposity in mid-adolescents. In addition, the effect of the district level on the predictor variables highlights the important role of the environmental factors on the childhood obesity.

Abstract Background: Adolescents are in their formative years, and they experience several changes including anthropometric changes. Significant weight gain occurs in adolescence, and increasingly, obesity and consequent increase in blood pressure (BP) are found in adolescents. Objective: This study compared anthropometric and BP measurements in male and female adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 1000 adolescents (510 males and 490 females) were selected by multi-stage sampling from eight secondary schools. Pertinent information was collected with the aid of a structured questionnaire, anthropometric and blood pressure measurements. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16.0 version, and the means of anthropometric indices and blood pressures in males and females were compared using independent t-test. Results: The mean age for male respondents was 13.83 years (SD 2.12) and for females 13.62 (SD 1.96). Generally, anthropometric indices gradually increased from the lower ages to the higher ages in both males and females. The mean height was the same for both males and females (1.54 m), while the mean weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference were significantly higher in females than in males (p<0.05). A significantly higher proportion of females compared with males were overweight (10.2%, 5.3%) and obese (3.9%, 2.0%), respectively. The overall prevalence of “hypertension,” was 4.1% and more females (70.7%) had “hypertension” than males (29.3%). Conclusion: Females were heavier and constituted the greater proportion of those who had elevated BP. Adequate attention needs to be given to the challenging problems of overweight and obesity to forestall development of hypertension in adolescents, especially female adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of low body weight/thinness, overweight and obesity in a representative sample of children and adolescents from a Brazilian region with low economic development. METHODS: A total of 982 girls and 986 boys, aged seven to 17 years old and assisted by Segundo Tempo Program, from Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil, were included in the study. Low body weight/thinness, overweight and obesity were defined based on body mass cut-off indexes recommended by the International Obesity Task Force. The prevalence of the nutritional status according to sex and age was compared by chi-square test. RESULTS: In girls, the frequency of low body weight/thinness, overweight and obesity was 4.1, 18.4 and 3.8%, respectively; in boys, these percentages were 6.3, 13.2 and 2.9%, respectively. The low body weight/thinness for girls raised from 2.7% (7-10 years old) to 5.5% (15-17 years old); the body weight excess (overweight and obesity) decreased from 30.1 to 16.2% for the same age groups. In boys, the corresponding trends were from 3.2 to 9.4% for low body weight/thinness, and from 23.4 to 9.2%, for body weight excess. CONCLUSIONS: The data indicate that, even in a region with low economic status, the body weight excess was the main problem associated with nutritional health. The high overweight and obesity prevalence rates indicate the need of public policies for promoting healthy feeding behaviors and physical activity.

The Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) is one of the most commonly used method to estimate linear regression parameters. If multicollinearity is exist within predictor variables especially coupled with the outliers, then regression analysis with OLS is no longer used. One method that can be used to solve a multicollinearity and outliers problems is Ridge Robust-MM Regression. Ridge Robust-MM  Regression is a modification of the Ridge Regression method based on the MM-estimator of Robust Regression. The case study in this research is AKB in Central Java 2017 influenced by population dencity, the precentage of households behaving in a clean and healthy life, the number of low-weighted baby born, the number of babies who are given exclusive breastfeeding, the number of babies that receiving a neonatal visit once, and the number of babies who get health services. The result of estimation using OLS show that there is violation of multicollinearity and also the presence of outliers. Applied ridge robust-MM regression to case study proves ridge robust regression can improve parameter estimation. Based on t test at 5% significance level most of predictor variables have significant effect to variable AKB. The influence value of predictor variables to AKB is 47.68% and MSE value is 0.01538.Keywords:  Ordinary  Least  Squares  (OLS),  Multicollinearity,  Outliers,  RidgeRegression, Robust Regression, AKB.

Introduction: Failure in social support is one of the important factors in developing postpartum depression. Since mothers with premature or sick babies have higher levels of anxiety during postpartum period in comparison with other members, they need more social support. So, in this study we decided to evaluate the relation between postpartum depression and the level of social support in mothers who have premature newborns. Methods: This descriptive-correlative study was conducted on 100 mothers who had premature newborns and were  discharged from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Shahid Sadoughi Hospital in 2016. The sampling was conducted using the available sampling method. Mothers were asked to complete the social support and postpartum depression questionnaire. . All collected data were entered to the SPSS v.17 and analyzed by the analytic and descriptive statistical indices. The significance level was set at p-value<0.05. Results: The final results revealed that social support had a significant association (p-value<0.05) with the number of mother’s child, her husband’s job,  and family economic status . Furthermore, the findings revealed that postpartum depression had a significant association with the father's job, the educational status of father, and the economic status of family. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the more social support leds to the less incidence of postpartum depression.

Introduction: Cellulitis remains a very serious disease even today. Mortality, which varied between 10–40%, has been reduced owing to the standard securing of airway patency and use of an appropriate surgical treatment approach. Materials and methods: A total of 195 patients were hospitalised for cellulitis at the University Hospital in Hradec Králové during 2007–2011. The following parameters were evaluated: age, gender, dependence of incidence of the disease on the season of the year, frequency of attacks of the particular areas and their clinical characteristics, aetiology of the inflammation, types of patient complaints, prevalence of current systemic diseases, results of microbiological and selected laboratory analyses, socio-economic status of the patients, and duration of patient stay at the hospital. Statistical analysis was performed by using Pearson’s correlation coefficient, the statistical significance level was p < 0.05. Results: The mean age of the patients was 39.8 years. The group of 195 patients included 108 (55%) males and 87 (45%) females. The mean time between the first symptoms of the disease and admission to the Department was 5 days. From among the 195 patients, 116 (59.5%) were working persons, 79 (40.5%) were non-working (children, students, unemployed persons, women on maternity leave, retired people). The odontogenic origin of the disease was verified in 173 (88.7%) patients. In total, 65 (33.3%) patients had no coinciding complicating systemic disease, 22 (11.3%) patients had diabetes mellitus. The most frequent symptom of cellulitis was painful swelling, found in 194 (99.5%) patients, followed by jaw contracture, found in 153 (78.5%) patients. Conclusion: The results are largely very similar to those of previous studies performed in other countries, except that we found no correlation between the prevalence of cellulitis and the socio-economic status, nor have we confirmed Klebsiella pneumoniae sp. as the cause of cellulitis in patients with diabetes mellitus.
