Abstract Objective The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted a fragile preparation by countries and regions for epidemic events, exposing exacerbated nationalisms in pandemic mitigation and control actions. Both conditions decisively compromise the effectiveness and efficiency of pandemic control capacity. It is important to develop frameworks that help overcome frailties in response to epidemics. Methods Thematic literature review and discussions with multiple national and international entities. The discussions were not specific to the article, hence were not considered as formal information collection. Based on this information, an attempt was made to build a tool for responding to the identified problems. Results Proposal of the 2PF tool. Conclusion The proposed 2PF tool is aligned with the Sendai Framework and proposals from international bodies, such as HERA, among others. It aims to be a framework for operationalizing these agreements, at least in part of its dimensions. The general idea is that pandemic preparedness cannot fail or to all other disaster risks and similar recognized by the UN. The response to pandemics must be based essentially on international action and closer collaboration between countries and regions.

Abstract Background A systematic literature review about unaccompanied minors was done with the following focus: scientifically documented effects of supportexperiences of unaccompanied children and youth about positive and negative factors Methods 2 210 abstracts were examined. Assessment of relevance and quality and the analysis were done according to SBU standard. Results No controlled study on effects were fulfilling the inclusion criteria. However, 29 articles with qualitative design were included. Seven overall themes were identified: Security and control: a basic requirementThe new country: both opportunities and difficultiesManaging difficulties: a balance between different strategiesEveryday environments: supportive relationships as well as influence in housing and access to schools and activities are importantRelationships: support and guidance from adults is important, contact with peers important, but also difficultSocial services and health and medical care: varying views on and experiences of support and needsIdentity and affiliation: getting together the past, the present and the future. The seven themes could be grouped in three overarching levels: Basic living conditions and survivalDifficulties and opportunities in everyday lifeWeighting of bringing together existence on an overall plan Conclusions To our knowledge, this is the largest literature review about support for unaccompanied children and youth. In the absence of controlled effect studies, it is particularly important to pay attention to unaccompanied children and youths own experiences when providing guidance for how societýs support for this heterogeneous group can be designed, in accordance with their rights in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The results of the review are compared to common policies in handling unaccompanied children and youth. Key messages Unaccompanied children have commonly experienced trauma and loss. A lack of basic security has a pronounced effect on the ability to cope with daily issues and difficulties as well as with the future. Unaccompanied children and youth have a great need for adult support and guidance.

In order to improve the information management of the modern digital agriculture, combined several modern digital agriculture technologies, namely wireless sensor network (WSN), global positioning system (GPS), geographic information system (GIS) and general packet radio service (GPRS), and applied them to the information collection and intelligent control process of the modern digital agriculture. Combining the advantage of the local multi-channel information collection and the low-power wireless transmission of WSN, the stable and low cost long-distance communication and data transmission ability of GPRS, the high-precision positioning technology of the DGPS positioning and the large-scale field information layer-management technology of GIS, such a hybrid technology combination is applied to the large-scale field information and intelligent management. In this study, wireless sensor network routing nodes are disposed in the sub-area of field. These nodes have GPS receiver modules and the electric control mechanism, and are relative positioned by GPS. They can real-time monitor the field information and control the equipment for the field application. When the GPS position information and other collected field information are measured, the information can be remotely transmitted to PC by GPRS. Then PC can upload the information to the GIS management software. All the field information can be classified into different layers in GIS and shown on the GIS map based on their GPS position. Moreover, we have developed remote control software based on GIS. It can send the control commands through GPRS to the nodes which have control modules; and then we can real-time manage and control the field application. In conclusion, the unattended automatic wireless intelligent technology for the field information collection and control can effectively utilize hardware resources, improve the field information intelligent management and reduce the information and intelligent cost.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the necessity of good quality and adequate quantity of healthcare infrastructure facilities. Healthcare facilities were provided for COVID-19 facilities with improvisation and supplementary lateral infrastructure from other sectors. However, the main point of contemplation going into the future was regarding how to quickly develop healthcare facilities. The subject domain of ‘industrial engineering’ (IE) and its associated perspectives could provide some key insights regarding this. The authors undertook a conceptual literature review and provided theoretical argumentation toward this. The findings provided insights regarding the application of industrial engineering concepts in healthcare facilities and services.

Recent failures in COVID-19 prevention and control in some of the richest countries raise questions about the relevance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the fight against pandemics. To examine this issue, we adopted the measure of countries’ progress for the SDGs in the SDG Index Scores (SDGS) and employed two analytical devices. The first was regression-aided adjustment of the number of deaths and confirmed cases. The second was the use of robust regressions to control the undue influence of outliers. The results are mixed. Between the SDGS and the adjusted infection rates, we found no significant correlation; however, between the SDGS and the adjusted death rates, the correlation was negative and statistically significant. These results provide a nuanced contrast to the hasty conclusions some of us might be tempted to draw from apparent positive correlations between SDGS and the cases and the deaths. The SDGs represent the fruit of painstaking global efforts to encourage and coordinate international action to enhance sustainability. We find the results reassuring, in that they suggest that the countries with higher SDGS have been able to control the devastation of deaths from COVID-19 more effectively, despite being unable to control the propagation of infections.

People with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) often experience uncertainty and fear about their futures. Partners of PwMS may share their concerns and experience fears about their own futures, limitations on their lives, ability to work, and becoming a carer. For PwMS, modification of lifestyle-related risk factors has been associated with improved health outcomes. For PwMS who attended residential lifestyle modification workshops (RLMW), sustained improved health outcomes have been demonstrated. Whether improved outcomes for PwMS who engage with lifestyle modification translate to improved partner perceptions of the future, is yet to be explored. We explored the perspectives of partners of PwMS who had attended a RLMW and the impact that the person with MS’s illness and their engagement with lifestyle modification had on their partners’ views of the future. Analysis of 21 semi-structured interviews used a methodology informed by Heidegger’s Interpretive Phenomenology. Three themes emerged: ‘uncertainty’, ‘planning for the future’ and ‘control, empowerment and confidence’. Subthemes included MS and lifestyle modification being a catalyst for positive change; developing a sense of control and empowerment; and hope, optimism and positivity. Lifestyle modification may provide benefits, not only to PwMS, but also to their partners, and should be considered part of mainstream management of MS.

This essay is a comment on the research program launched by Frank Adloff and Sighard Neckel. My comment is specifically focused on their research agenda as outlined in their trend-setting article, ‘Futures of sustainability as modernization, transformation, and control: A conceptual framework’. The comment is also addressed more generally to the research program of the Humanities Centre for Advanced Studies ‘Futures of Sustainability’. I raise three issues: the first relates to the very idea of the future; the second concerns the notion of social imaginaries and the third question is focused on the idea of social transformation.
