Abstract The results of studies of the structure and properties of semi-finished products from aluminum and its alloys, obtained with the use of cast-free rolling-extruding are presented. It has been found that the rods obtained by the high-speed crystallization-deformation technology by the direct rolling-extrusion method have a stable ultrafine subgrain structure, which makes it possible to use them as modifiers. Experimental studies have been carried out, which confirmed the assumption that the initial structure of the modifying rod affects the melt. It was revealed that the size and density of distribution of additional crystallization centers formed in the volume of the melt based on clusters are inherited from the original subgrain structure of the modifying rod made of aluminum or its alloys. Metallographic studies have also shown that the subsequent severe plastic deformation by equal-channel angular extruding of rods obtained by direct rolling-extruding from an experimental alloy of the composition Al-0.2Zr-0.2Fe-0.4Mg makes it possible to achieve additional strengthening of the metal, since even more refines its structure, while the average grain size is 647 μm.

Processes, occurring on annealing of TiNi alloy, processed by high pressure torsion (HPT), were the focus of this research. Some peaks of heat release were found on heating the deformed samples up to 550 °C. If the initial structure of the alloy was amorphous (after 3.5 turns of HPT), then structural relaxation, crystallization and grain growth occurred on heating. When alloys had a crystalline structure (after rotation by 15 and 90 degrees), recovery, recrystallization and further grain growth took place on heating. It was observed that the TiNi alloy, subjected to 3.5 turns of HPT and subsequent heating up to 550 °C, underwent unusual kinetics of martensitic transformations. The austenite B2 phase transformed to the martensite B19' phase in two ways: B2→R→B19' and B2→ B19'.

Abstract This work intended to analyse the structure and properties of hypoeutectic silumin treated by a pulsed electron beam. The study has shown that the silumin surface modified by a pulsed electron beam fractures due to the formation and propagation of microcracks along the boundaries of high-speed crystallization cells. In the untreated material (the concentration of silicon in the alloy is irrelevant) microcracks tend to originate and propagate along the phase boundaries between aluminum and silicon. The research has revealed that the plasticity of irradiated AK5M2 silumin is 1.6 higher and the strength is 1.1 lower than these characteristics of the untreated material; the irradiated AK10M2H silumin fractures at higher (by ≈ 30%) applied stress and higher (by 30%) plastic deformation than the untreated material.

The paper reveals regularities and mechanisms of structure-phase states and properties formation of of differentially hardened 100-m rails of DT 350 category after the passed tonnage of 1411 mln. tons brutto. The formation of highly defective surface layer with nanosize (40–50 nm) grain-subgrain structure of pearlite colonies and submicrocrystal (150–250 nm) structure grains with structure free ferrite is detected. The change of hardness, microhardness, crystal lattice parameter, microdistorsion level, scalar and excess dislocation density on the rails head section are analyzed. The possible mechanisms of cementite plates’ transformation at extremely long-term operation are discussed.

The article focuses on the results from recent experimental of severe plastic deformation of low carbon (LC) steel and medium carbon (MC) steel performed at increased temperatures. The grain refinement of ferrite respectively ferrite-pearlite structure is described. While LC steel was deformed by ECAP die (ε = 3) with a channel angle φ = 90° the ECAP severe deformation of MC steel was conducted with die channel angle of 120° (ε = 2.6 - 4). The high straining in LC steel resulted in extensively elongated ferrite grains with dense dislocation network and randomly recovered and polygonized structure was observed. The small period of work hardening appeared at tensile deformation. On the other side, the warm ECAP deformation of MC steel in dependence of increased effective strain resulted in more progressive recovery process. In interior of the elongated ferrite grains the subgrain structure prevails with dislocation network. As straining increases the dynamic polygonization and recrystallization became active to form mixture of polygonized subgrain and submicrocrystalline structure. The straining and moderate ECAP temperature caused the cementite lamellae fragmentation and spheroidzation as number of passes increased. The tensile behaviour of the both steels was characterized by strength increase however the absence of strain hardening was found at low carbon steel. The favourable effect of ferrite-pearlite structure modification due straining was reason for extended work hardening period observed at MC steel.

The effect of high-temperature thermomechanical treatment on the structural transformations and mechanical properties of metastable austenitic steel of the AISI 321 type is investigated. The features of the grain and defect microstructure of steel were studied by scanning electron microscopy with electron back-scatter diffraction (SEM EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is shown that in the initial state after solution treatment the average grain size is 18 μm. A high (≈50%) fraction of twin boundaries (annealing twins) was found. In the course of hot (with heating up to 1100 °C) plastic deformation by rolling to moderate strain (e = 1.6, where e is true strain) the grain structure undergoes fragmentation, which gives rise to grain refining (the average grain size is 8 μm). Partial recovery and recrystallization also occur. The fraction of low-angle misorientation boundaries increases up to ≈46%, and that of twin boundaries decreases to ≈25%, compared to the initial state. The yield strength after this treatment reaches up to 477 MPa with elongation-to-failure of 26%. The combination of plastic deformation with heating up to 1100 °C (e = 0.8) and subsequent deformation with heating up to 600 °C (e = 0.7) reduces the average grain size to 1.4 μm and forms submicrocrystalline fragments. The fraction of low-angle misorientation boundaries is ≈60%, and that of twin boundaries is ≈3%. The structural states formed after this treatment provide an increase in the strength properties of steel (yield strength reaches up to 677 MPa) with ductility values of 12%. The mechanisms of plastic deformation and strengthening of metastable austenitic steel under the above high-temperature thermomechanical treatments are discussed.

The ballasted track superstructure is characterized by a relative quick deterioration of track geometry due to ballast settlements and the accumulation of sleeper voids. The track zones with the sleeper voids differ from the geometrical irregularities with increased dynamic loading, high vibration, and unfavorable ballast-bed and sleeper contact conditions. This causes the accelerated growth of the inhomogeneous settlements, resulting in maintenance-expensive local instabilities that influence transportation reliability and availability. The recent identification and evaluation of the sleeper support conditions using track-side and on-board monitoring methods can help planning prevention activities to avoid or delay the development of local instabilities such as ballast breakdown, white spots, subgrade defects, etc. The paper presents theoretical and experimental studies that are directed at the development of the methods for sleeper support identification. The distinctive features of the dynamic behavior in the void zone compared to the equivalent geometrical irregularity are identified by numeric simulation using a three-beam dynamic model, taking into account superstructure and rolling stock dynamic interaction. The spectral features in time domain in scalograms and scattergrams are analyzed. Additionally, the theoretical research enabled to determine the similarities and differences of the dynamic interaction from the viewpoint of track-side and on-board measurements. The method of experimental investigation is presented by multipoint track-side measurements of rail-dynamic displacements using high-speed video records and digital imaging correlation (DIC) methods. The method is used to collect the statistical information from different-extent voided zones and the corresponding reference zones without voids. The applied machine learning methods enable the exact recent void identification using the wavelet scattering feature extraction from track-side measurements. A case study of the method application for an on-board measurement shows the moderate results of the recent void identification as well as the potential ways of its improvement.

AbstractOne of the most dominant manufacturing methods in the production of electromechanical devices from sheet metal is punching. In punching, the material undergoes plastic deformation and finally fracture. Punching of an electrical steel sheet causes plastic deformation on the edges of the part, which affects the magnetic properties of the material, i.e., increases iron losses in the material, which in turn has a negative effect on the performance of the electromagnetic devices in the final product. Therefore, punching-induced iron losses decrease the energy efficiency of the device. FEM simulations of punching have shown significantly increased plastic deformation on the workpiece edges with increasing tool wear. In order to identify the critical tool wear, after which the iron losses have increased beyond acceptable limits, the simulation results must be verified with experimental methods. The acceptable limits are pushed further in the standards by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The new standard (IEC TS 60034-30-2:2016) has much stricter limits regarding the energy efficiency of electromechanical machines, with an IE5 class efficiency that exceeds the previous IE4 class (IEC 60034-30-1:2014) requirements by 30%. The simulations are done using Scientific Forming Technologies Corporation Deform, a finite element software for material processing simulations. The electrical steel used is M400-50A, and the tool material is Vanadis 23, a powder-based high-speed steel. Vanadis 23 is a high alloyed powder metallurgical high-speed steel with a high abrasive wear resistance and a high compressive strength. It is suitable for cold work processing like punching. In the existing literature, FEM simulations and experimental methods have been incorporated for investigating the edge deformation properties of sheared surfaces, but there is a research gap in verifying the simulation results with the experimental methods. In this paper, FEM simulation of the punching process is verified using an electrical steel sheet from real production environment and measuring the deformation of the edges using microhardness measurements. The simulations show high plastic deformation 50 μm into the workpiece edge, a result that is shown to be in good agreement with the experimental results.

This work presents a study related to the grain refinement of an aluminum A2618 alloy achieved by High-Pressure Torsion (HPT) known as a process of Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD). The HPT is conducted on disks of the alloy under an applied pressure of 6 GPa for 1 and 5 turns with a rotation speed of 1 rpm at room temperature. The HPT processing leads to microstructural refinement with an average grain size of ~250 nm at a saturation level after 5 turns. Gradual increases in hardness are observed from the beginning of straining up to a saturation level. This study thus suggests that hardening due to grain refinement is attained by the HPT processing of the A2618 alloy at room temperature.

Foil bearing is considered to be a promising supporting technology in high-speed centrifugal machinery. Due to the high-speed shearing effect in the viscous lubricant film, heat generation could not be ignored. In this paper, a thermo-elastic model of the multi-leaf foil thrust bearing is proposed to predict its thermal and static characteristics. In the model, modified Reynolds equation, energy equation, and Kirchhoff equation are solved in a coupling way. The contact area between the foil and welding plate is taken into account. Besides, the effect of cooling air on the bearing temperature is investigated. The ultimate load capacity and transient overload failure process of the bearing is analyzed and discussed. The effect of rotation speed on the bearing temperature is more obvious than that of the bearing load. The bearing temperature drops obviously by introducing the cooling air, and the cooling effect is improved with the supply pressure. The transient overload failure of the bearing occurs when the bearing load exceeds the ultimate value.
