This essay is about social aspects of sustainability in sloyd in Swedish compulsory school, against the backdrop that this knowledge area is perceived as difficult to teach by teachers. Drawing on previous research from differing fields, implications for teaching and learning are discussed in relation to students’ emotional experiences and to the role of materials and sloyd artefacts in social interaction. While interaction between the student and the material/artefact is at the core of sloyd, education for social sustainability, as a new challenge, requires new approaches for teaching.

The scientific article explores the role of software as a tool used by organizations to carry out economic activities in a digital economy without which it is impossible to have adequate competitiveness in a digital economy. The concept of “digital economy” has been clarified. A methodology has been developed to evaluate the effectiveness of the software used or selected on the basis of its qualitative and quantitative characteristics and the requirements of the workplace for the software functionality. Based on the theoretical and methodological base and the developed methodology, a scalable model of an effective management decision-making process for selecting and updating software in an organization is built, a comparison with existing practice is carried out. The significance of the research results is due to the lack of widely available methods in open access for the optimal selection of software as a tool, not related to involving external agents in the process and having the necessary scalability to use them, including collective, in organizations. This creates negative effects for organizations and the economy of the Republic of Belarus as a whole.

Recent decades have witnessed a sea change in thinking about emotion, which has gone from being seen as a disruptive force in human thought and action to being seen as an important source of situation- and goal-relevant information and evaluation, continuous with perception and cognition. Here I argue on philosophical and empirical grounds that the role of emotion in contributing to our ability to respond to reasons for action runs deeper still: The affective system is at the core of the process of evaluatively modeling situations, actions, and outcomes, which is the foundation upon which rational deliberation and action can be built. Taking up this perspective affords new approaches to long-standing problems in the theory of reason-based action.

Abstract The fundamental importance of cartographic signs in traditional maps is unquestionable, although in the case of multimedia maps their key function is not so obvious. Our aim was to search the problem of cartographic signs as a core of multimedia maps prepared by non-cartographer in on-line Map Services. First, preestablished rules for multimedia map designers were prepared emphasizing the key role of the cartographic signs and habits of Web-users. The comparison of projects completed by a group of designers led us to the general conclusion that a cartographic sign should determine the design of a multimedia map in on-line Map Services. Despite the selection of five different map topics, one may list the general characteristics of the maps with a cartographic sign in the core.

The logistical infrastructure of the supply chains of online and offline sales channels of suppliers have been historically often completely separate. In the growing mobile commerce market, customers interact with suppliers using multiple touch points in one overall stream of information and goods which is considered an omni-channel. For larger suppliers, this can be an intricate chain of either their own resources or global partners. For many smaller suppliers, this is a chain of third parties adding value to the core competency of the supplier. The selection of a logistics partner for a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) is a substantial investment in both infrastructure and a trusted relationship. But do SME suppliers know what they are looking for in an omni-channel strategy, and why? This article examines what characteristics an SME looks for in a 3PL partner in an omni-channel strategy, and discusses how an omni-channel strategy can be developed for these players.

AbstractThis article focuses on qualitative research methods in negotiations, particular textual and discourse analyses. It defines discourse analysis and reviews the ways that researchers have used conversational, pragmatics, and rhetorical analyses to study negotiations. It discusses types of texts available for discourse analysis and the role of research questions in guiding the selection of texts and discourse units in bargaining. Discourse analysis helps researchers unpack the developmental and contextual features of negotiation; link micro patterns of talk to political, legal, and organizational processes; and uncover new concepts that extend the knowledge of negotiation. The final section of the article provides helpful hints for conducting discourse analysis and for interpreting the bargaining context.

This year sees the twentieth anniversary of the foremost British-Asian ‘company of identity’, Tara Arts, directed throughout that time by Jatinder Verma – a major interview with whom forms the core of this celebratory feature. This traces the history and evolving philosophy of the company, from its origins in outrage at a racist murder, through changing perceptions of how multicultural identity can best find its dramatic expression, to a discussion of Verma's own recent work for Contact Theatre and the National. Contributions from other leading participants in the company's work are complemented by a selection of press reactions to major productions, and a survey of bibliographical and other resources. The compiler of this feature, Graham Ley, presently lectures in the Department of Drama at the University of Exeter, having previously taught in London and New Zealand. He is currently completing a book on theatrical theory, on which he has previously also published in NTQ, most recently in ‘The Role of Metaphor in Brook's The Empty Space’ (NTQ35, 1993) and ‘The Significance of Diderot’ (NTQ44, 1995). Among his publications on ancient performance, A short introduction to the Ancient Greek Theatre appeared from the University of chicago Press in 1991.
