Empirical therapy of male infertility is used as a stand-alone type of treatment in idiopathic infertility, and in other situations can complement basic therapy. There are well-known pathogenetic methods of male infertility treatment applied in case of reproductive gland infection, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, ejaculation disorders. However, the prospects of empirical treatment of male infertility are not fully clear. Combined antioxidant drugs are very popular, which include a wide range of similar substances. However, their molecules significantly differ from each other in structure, chemical properties and set of biological functions, therefore, there is a number of questions that deserve separate discussion regarding their compatibility with each other. Antioxidants such as various water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins, coenzyme Q10, zinc and carnitines are widely used in its composition to reduce sperm damage caused by oxidative stress. They are widely available and inexpensive compared to other methods of treatment. Although there are no results of large randomized controlled trials yet, there is some evidence that taking oral antioxidoidants improves the basic parameters of sperm and increases the frequency of childbirth. There are many antioxidant supplements in different dosage forms, with different compositions and modes of use. In this article, we have analyzed the effect of the main antioxidant substances used on semen parameters, the need for their combined use and the role of these substances in the body.

Objective: Infertility affects 15% of couples in fertile age. Male factor is a cause of infertility in almost half of cases, mainly due to oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT). The purpose of this study is to review the effects of nutritional supplements as medical treatment for idiopathic male infertility. Material and methods: A Pub Med and Medline review of the published studies utilizing nutritional supplements for the treatment of male infertility has been performed. Results: Clinical trials on Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin C. Arginine, Carnitine, N-Acetyl-Carnitine, Glutathione, Coenzyme Q10, Selenium and Zinc were reviewed. Although there is a wide variability in selected population, dose regimen and final outcomes, nutritional supplements both alone and in combination seems to be able to improve semen parameters (sperm count, sperm motility and morphology) and pregnancy rate in infertile men. Conclusions: There are rising evidences from published randomized trials and systematic review suggesting that nutritional supplementation may improve semen parameters and the likelihood of pregnancy in men affected by OAT. This improvement, however, is not consistent and there is a wide variation in the treatment regimens used. Well designed and adequately powered RCTs are needed to better clarify the role of nutritional supplements as treatment for male infertility.

Front-line police operations are deeply entwined with less visible activities – or practices not commonly identified as policing – that are carried out by a wide range of participants as strategies of settler-colonial pacification operating through the organizing logics of security and liberal legalism. Using open source texts and records obtained through access to information requests, this article unmaps some of the contemporary strategies employed by Canadian institutions to pacify Indigenous resistance. As a contribution to the body of work seeking to develop the politics of anti-security, the analysis disrupts the binary categories that animate security logic by examining the public order policing approach of the Ontario Provincial Police, the framing of Indigenous resistance as a security threat, and the integral role of Indian Affairs in securing the settler-state.

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) supports spermatogenesis acting via its receptor (FSHR), which activates trophic effects in gonadal Sertoli cells. These pathways are targeted by hormonal drugs used for clinical treatment of infertile men, mainly belonging to sub-groups defined as hypogonadotropic hypogonadism or idiopathic infertility. While, in the first case, fertility may be efficiently restored by specific treatments, such as pulsatile gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) or choriogonadotropin (hCG) alone or in combination with FSH, less is known about the efficacy of FSH in supporting the treatment of male idiopathic infertility. This review focuses on the role of FSH in the clinical approach to male reproduction, addressing the state-of-the-art from the little data available and discussing the pharmacological evidence. New compounds, such as allosteric ligands, dually active, chimeric gonadotropins and immunoglobulins, may represent interesting avenues for future personalized, pharmacological approaches to male infertility.

Taste receptors (TASRs) are expressed not only in the oral cavity but also throughout the body, thus suggesting that they may play different roles in organ systems beyond the tongue. Recent studies showed the expression of several TASRs in mammalian testis and sperm, indicating an involvement of these receptors in male gametogenesis and fertility. This notion is supported by an impaired reproductive phenotype of mouse carrying targeted deletion of taste receptor genes, as well as by a significant correlation between human semen parameters and specific polymorphisms of taste receptor genes. To better understand the biological and thus clinical significance of these receptors for human reproduction, we analyzed the expression of several members of the TAS2Rs family of bitter receptors in human testis and in ejaculated sperm before and after in vitro selection and capacitation. Our results provide evidence for the expression of TAS2R genes, with TAS2R14 being the most expressed bitter receptor subtype in both testis tissue and sperm cells, respectively. In addition, it was observed that in vitro capacitation significantly affects both the expression and the subcellular localization of these receptors in isolated spermatozoa. Interestingly, α-gustducin and α-transducin, two Gα subunits expressed in taste buds on the tongue, are also expressed in human spermatozoa; moreover, a subcellular redistribution of both G protein α-subunits to different sub-compartments of sperm was registered upon in vitro capacitation. Finally, we shed light on the possible downstream transduction pathway initiated upon taste receptor activation in the male reproductive system. Performing ultrasensitive droplets digital PCR assays to quantify RNA copy numbers of a distinct gene, we found a significant correlation between the expression of TAS2Rs and TRPM5 (r = 0.87), the cation channel involved in bitter but also sweet and umami taste transduction in taste buds on the tongue. Even if further studies are needed to clarify the precise functional role of taste receptors for successful reproduction, the presented findings significantly extend our knowledge of the biological role of TAS2Rs for human male fertility.

How can we be aware of ourselves both as physical objects and as thinking, experiencing subjects? What role does the experience of the body play in generating our sense of self? What is the role of action and agency in the construction of the bodily self? These questions have been a rich subject of interdisciplinary debate among philosophers, neuroscientists, experimental psychologists, and cognitive scientists for several decades. José Luis Bermúdez been a significant contributor to these debates since the 1990’s, when he authored The Paradox of Self-Consciousness (MIT Press, 1998) and co-edited The Body and the Self (MIT Press, 1995) with Anthony Marcel and Naomi Eilan. The Bodily Self is a selection of essays all focused on different aspects of the role of the body in self-consciousness, prefaced by a substantial introduction outlining common themes across the essays. The essays have been published in a wide range of journals and edited volumes. Putting them together brings out a wide-ranging, thematically consistent perspective on a set of topics and problems that remain firmly of interest across the cognitive and behavioral sciences.

Infertility affects 50 to 80 million people worldwide. Male factor is a cause of infertility in almost half of cases, mainly due to oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT). With common diagnostic methods no cause can be found in approximately 30% of cases of male infertility due to OAT and these are considered idiopathic. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important role in male infertility and are proved to be higher in infertile men; antioxidants could oppose their effect. The aim of this paper was to review the literature on clinical trials in the period from year 2000 to year 2013 studying the effects of various types of antioxidant supplements on basic and other sperm parameters and pregnancy rates in subfertile males with idiopathic OAT. The majority of studies were randomized and placebo controlled and confirmed beneficial effect of antioxidants on at least one of the semen parameters; the biggest effect was determined on sperm motility. In many of these trials combinations of more antioxidants were assessed. The optimal dosages of one or more antioxidants were not defined. We concluded that antioxidants play an important role in protecting semen from ROS and can improve basic sperm parameters in case of idiopathic OAT.

Background: Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection that is commonly related to male infertility. The infection affects sperm transport through the urinary tract and subsequent damage of the testicular tubes. The infection also impair sperm production as the infection is rarely asymptomatic and can be difficult to diagnose, it is possible that its contribution to male infertility is underestimated. Infection of the genitals results in a purulent (pus-like) discharge from the genitals which may be foul smelling, inflammation, redness, swelling, dysuria, and a burning sensation during urination. As with Chlamydia, it is possible to have a Gonorrhea infection without noticeable symptoms, and which can cause permanent scarring and blockage in the sperm production duct. Gonorrhoea is a bacterial infection and is treatable with antibiotics. Laboratory studies reveal that N. gonorrhoeae infection can impair motility, viability and spermatogenesis; increase anti-sperm antibodies are associated with a decrease in semen parameters as a result of the production of anti-sperm antibodies in the genital tract. Aim: The study aimed at reviewing the possible role of gonorrhoea in male infertility. Method: Research publications such as Pubmed, Scopus, Medline etc. Results: over 115 journals of international repute were obtained, out of which 50 were found to be closely relevant such as; the implication of N. gonorrheae in male infertility, complication of N. gonorrhea infection, N. gonorrhea e and male infertility and were reviewed. Conclusion: N. gonorrhoae was found implicative in male infertility and the need for comprehensive modern laboratory methods for the diagnosis of the infection and also to included routine laboratory tests.

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, abounds in nature and is highly labile. It is a water-soluble vitamin that is lost in large amounts during food processing. It is a vitamin whose prescribed requirement across cultures is not uniform. For example , the prescribed requirement of vitamin C in Great Britain is 30mg/day, while in the U.S.A., it is 60mg/day and 100mg/day in Japan. These variations are unusual and point to the need for further research to establish the acceptable RDAs for diverse populations. The RDA for vitamin C should be more than the amount needed to prevent the occurrence of disease. Vitamin C plays significant functions in the body that enhance its role in the health status of the human body. The biochemical functions of vitamin C include: stimulation of certain enzymes, collagen biosynthesis, hormonal activation, antioxidant, detoxification of histamine, phagocytic functions of leukocytes, formation of nitrosamine, and proline hydroxylation amongst others. These functions are related to the health effects of vitamin C status in an individual. In human health, vitamin C has been associated with reduction of incidence of cancer, blood pressure, immunity, and drug metabolism and urinary hydroxyproline excretion, tissue regeneration. This vitamin is needed for the proper metabolism of drugs in the body through adequate hepatic mixed function oxidase system. Epidemiological data have revealed the preventive and curative role of vitamin C on certain disease conditions in the body though controversies still persist. Vitamin C is effective in protecting against oxidative damage in tissues and also suppresses formation of carcinogens like nitrosamines. There is an inverse relationship with blood pressure and both plasma vitamin C and Vitamin C. Vitamin C has a lowering effect on blood pressure, especially on systolic pressure more than a diastolic pressure. Low levels of plasma vitamin C are associated with stroke and with an increased risk of all cause mortality. Increased consumption of ascorbic acid raises serum ascorbic levels and could decrease the risk of death.

By the prevalence in the earth’s crust, silicon occupies the second place after oxygen. In different quantities silicon always presents in water and food products.The average daily dietary intake of silicon in Western world is about 20-50 mg/day. The biological role of silicon in human organism is still not clear, but it assumed to be necessary for processes of bone mineralization, collagen synthesis, it has a positive effect on the state of skin, hair, and nails, contributes to the prevention of atherosclerosis and Alzheimer disease. A number of scientific research is devoted to biological effects of silicon in animals and human subjects under intake with food and water, and substantiation of silicon (maximum admissible concentrations (MAC) in drinking water. In Chuvashia there was investigated the regional (geographical) pathology, which may be related with an increased silicon intake in association with the sharp imbalances of trace and macro elements in drinking water. Some measures were implemented to identify the possible role of silicon in etiology of Balkan endemic nephropathy. Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report summarized materials for the experimental evaluation of the toxicity and harmless levels of silicon intake with food and water in animals. A series of studies was executed to simulate the development of silicon urolithiasis and for the elucidation of the role of macro- and microelements accompanying the intake of silicon into the body in stone formation. There are studied potential therapeutic effects of water soluble silicon compounds on human health. The standards of silicon in drinking water are regulated only in Russia and Australia. At the same time in our country there were formed two opposing points of view in relation to the hygienic standardization of silicon. The first is one - MAC of silicon in drinking water needs to be cancelled, the second - MAC of silicon in the water needs to be tightened. To resolve the contradictions it is advisable to use both the experience of harmonization of standards with international requirements, and the principle of silicon regional standardization, taking into consideration the biogeochemical characteristics of geographic areas. X-ray and laser diffraction methods were used to determine basic physical and chemical properties of conversion calcium carbonate. It was found that for obtaining standard product for use as a filler, it is necessary to regrind it. The results of dispersion changes in conversion chalk (chalk stone) were expressed in terms of median (D50), maximum (D98) and minimum (D10) particle size. It was established that during the grinding process a transition occurs from the initial odiomodal distribution to the bimodal distribution, which is characterized by a sufficiently wide range of the sizes of the particles of the crushed material. The optimum parameters of grinding were determined. With the help of SEM method, used before and after grinding of conversion calcium carbonate, it was established that the particles of primary material are represented by polycrystalline dense aggregates of spherical shape, due to mass crystallization of calcium carbonate at the condition of high supersaturation according to polynuclear growth mechanism. The component composition of water-soluble impurities was quantitatively estimated on the basis of the determination of the content of nitrate N-NO3- and ammonium N-NH4+ forms of nitrogen in various forms of presence-total, bound, water-soluble, and additional determination of the Ca2+ content of calcium ions in aqueous extract. It has been experimentally established that preliminary heat treatment of conversion calcium carbonate allows to significantly reduce the total content of water-soluble substances in the ground product by more than 5 times: at a temperature of 400 ° C, the degree of removal by NH4+ and NO3- ions is ~ 40-50%, and at 500 ° C - ~ 60% for NO3- and ~ 90% for NH4+. The estimation of the possibility of using the obtained product as a filler of polymer composite materials was done comparing the main parameters (CIELab  (W and L) color characteristics, bulk density, dispersed composition, specific surface, pH of aqueous extract) with known finely ground natural chalk and microcalcite. Forcitation:Rudakova L.V., Niftaliev S.I., Natarova E.S.
