Removal of Salmonella Typhi, Shigella Dysenteriae, Vibrio Cholerae and Rotavirus from Water Using a Water Treatment Tablet

Chlor-floc tablets are intended for purification of small quantities of water for individual use by combined flocculation and disinfection. Removal of Escherichia coll E25, various viruses and Giardia cysts from polluted water by Chlor-floc has been previously demonstrated. This study evaluated the efficiency of removal of Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, Vibrio cholerae and rotavirus from simulated hard water of high organic content and colour. All four pathogenic microorganisms were successfully removed within the recommended treatment time. Log removals of 7-8 log were achieved for bacterial pathogens, and a removal of 6.5 log was obtained for rotavirus.

Full-scale tests have been conducted for enhanced coagulation in stabilized surface waters with low turbidity, high organic content and low temperature by PAC coagulation combined with composite permanganate (CP) pretreatment, KMnO4 preoxidation and prechlorination processes. The values of turbidity, COD, bacteria, coliform, TMn, chloroform and chloroform potential by different processes were observed. Test results show that CP pretreatment enhanced coagulation is superior to prechlorination and KMnO4 preoxidation. This pretreatment process has the capability to reduce the above parameter values sharply with less coagulant compared to prechlorination. CP pretreatment will not increase chloroform in water and can effectively remove chloroform potential. The manganese dioxide produced during permanganate preoxidation also enhanced coagulation, which has special adsorption and oxidation for the organic matter, and at the same time it acts as catalyst to accelerate the reaction between the KMnO4 and organics in water. CP enhanced coagulation is a cost-effective and most efficient pretreatment process.

Point-of-use water treatment and dispensing systems are becoming common features in middle-to-upper class homes and public spaces. However, their effectiveness at providing potable water is yet to be substantiated. In this study, the effect of temperature stress (cold ≈ 10oC and hot ≈ 78oC) on survival of three pathogenic (Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, Vibrio cholerae), a nuisance (Proteus vulgaris) and the indicator (Escherichia coli) bacteria was evaluated in water dispensers. Individual test organism was spiked into pre-sterilized distilled water in a 25-L dispenser bottle. The bottle was fitted and the machine set on to allow the organisms acclimatized for 30 mins before samples were collected. The holding temperatures apparently had an immediate significant inhibitory effect (p<0.05) on the pathogens, being greater in dispensed hot water. Effect of cold temperature stress was least on Escherichia coli. While Shigella dysenteriae and Vibrio cholerae were completely inactivated in dispensed hot water, there were some levels of resuscitation in the other organisms that were initially stressed by either the hot or cold temperature after just 1 h of cooling to room temperature. The re-inactivation was significant (p<0.05) in the dispensed cold water for Salmonella typhi and Vibrio cholerae. With exception of Shigella dysenteriae, other organisms exhibited varied susceptibility (5–11 mm) to six of eight antibiotics; this appeared to increase following the temperature stress. However, increased resistance to augmentin, nitrofurantoin and tetracycline was observed in some temperature-stressed strains, particularly Salmonella typhi and Vibrio cholerae as well as Escherichia coli. The findings indicate that, while hot or cold temperature may have an immediate inhibitory effect on microbial loads and antibiotic susceptibility, the unwholesome practice of drinking dispensed water several hours after should be discouraged.

Yeast production wastewater is one of the complex wastewater types, characterized by high organic content and color. This research on the application of non-thermal plasma in laboratory scale yeast production has demonstrated the superiority of this technology in terms of efficiency, treatment time and non- selectivity for pollutants. The wastewater treatment model is optimized in 3 minutes with a DC voltage of 100 V and a pH around 8.4, resulting in COD removal efficiency of over 75%, while color and TSS removal of 93%. The results of this study are the basis for practical application of wastewater at AB Mauri Vietnam after biological treatment stage (anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic) with a COD of greater than 5,000 mg/l and color over 26,000 Pt-Co.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the inhibitory neurotransmitter, can be naturally synthesized by a group of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) which is commonly found in rich carbohydrate materials such as fruits and fermented foods. Thirty-six isolates of GABA-producing LAB were obtained from Thai fermented foods. Among these, Levilactobacillus brevis F064A isolated from Thai fermented sausage displayed high GABA content, 2.85 ± 0.10 mg/mL and could tolerate acidic pH and bile salts indicating a promising probiotic. Mulberry (Morus sp.) is widely grown in Thailand. Many mulberry fruits are left to deteriorate during the high season. To increase its value, mulberry juice was prepared and added to monosodium glutamate (MSG), 2% (w/v) prior to inoculation with 5% (v/v) of L. brevis F064A and incubated at 37 °C for 48 h to obtain the GABA-fermented mulberry juice (GABA-FMJ). The GABA-FMJ obtained had 3.31 ± 0.06 mg/mL of GABA content, 5.58 ± 0.52 mg gallic acid equivalent/mL of antioxidant activity, 234.68 ± 15.53 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside/mL of anthocyanin, an ability to inhibit growth of Bacillus cereus TISTR 687, Salmonella Typhi DMST 22842 and Shigella dysenteriae DMST 1511, and 10.54 ± 0.5 log10 colony-forming units (CFU)/mL of viable L. brevis F064A cell count. This GABA-FMJ was considered as a potential naturally functional food for human of all ages.

Introduction: Carcinoma of cervix is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and in developing countries like India. Cervical cancer is third most common cancer among women however there is a good chance of curability if diagnosed in early stage. Materials and Methods: We had analysed 78 patient of carcinoma of cervix post op who were registered from 2012 to 2015 at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences. Results: We analysed 78 patients between age of 32-70 years and median age is 50 year. Among all patients squamous cell carcinoma is most common (65 patient), adenocarcinoma were 12 and lieomyosarcoma was 1 patient. Among all patient 12 were of adenocarcinoma, 1 of lieomyosarcoma and 65 patient of squamous cell carcinoma. On examination 55 patients were NAD and 23 were residual. Among squamous cell carcinoma 35 were moderate differentiated, 18 were well differentiated and 12 were of poorly differentiated. On examination 55 patients were NAD rest were having disease. Gap between EBRT and SORBO ranging from 3 to 99 days and median is 27 days and median is 29 days. Treatment length varies from 4 cm to 8 cm and median is 6 cm. Ovoide size ranges from 2.5 cm to 3.5 cm and median is 2.5 cm. Dose per fraction ranges from 5 Gy to 9 Gy and median was 9 Gy. Median fraction of session were 2. Out of 78 patients 2 were developed metastasis and 6 having residual disease. 28 patients were NAD and rest were referral and send back to parent hospital. Conclusion: Due to lack of resources and awareness of disease maximum number of patient presented with advanced stage. The recommended treatment time could not be achieved due to scarcity of cancer centres, treatment time is prolonged. We have not found any relation between treatment length and outcome. We are still investigating to conclude to found out relation among these variables.

A couple of natural coumarins was identified in the seeds of two apples’ cultivars commonly known as Granny Smith and Red Delicious. The effect of the phenolic hydroxyl moieties found in these products was evaluated on the bioactivity. This evaluation included the structural alteration of these moieties into less hydrophilic ones to explore the significance of the parent moieties on the biological activity. The investigated biopotentials were antioxidant, antiproliferative, antibacterial, and antifungal effects. The antioxidant potential was investigated by detecting the ability of the natural and semisynthetic coumarins to trap the free hydroxyl and DPPH radicals. The antiproliferative potential was assessed via an MTT-depended assay versus eight cancerous-cell lines, included HeLa, SK-OV-3, AR42J, MCF-7, AB12, KYSE-30, LC540, and AMN3. The antibacterial potential was tested versus six common pathogenic bacterial strains via a well-defined disc diffusion assay. These pathogens were Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Klebsiella pneumonia, Haemophilus influenzae, Shigella dysenteriae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antifungal potential was also screened by utilizing a similar microbiological technique versus three pathogenic fungi, involved Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus, and Aspergillus niger. It is concluded that the investigated chemical moiety has a positive influence on the antioxidant and antiproliferative potentials of the natural derivatives, and a negative one on their antibacterial and antifungal potentials.

The essential oil obtained from the leaves of Lippia alba (Mill.) N.E. Brown (Verbenaceae) has shown great pharmacological potential as an analgesic, antispasmodic, and antimicrobial agent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the modulatory effect of Lippia alba essential oil (LaEO I) on the activity of clinically used antimicrobial agents on Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (Salmonella typhi) and Shigella dysenteriae biofilms. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of LaEO I (MICLaEO I) was determined by the microdilution method, and the effect of LaEO I on the activity of clinically used antimicrobials was assessed by the Checkboard method. The values obtained from MICLaEO I and ciprofloxacin were used to evaluate the effect of time of exposure on cell viability. LaEO I main components were geranial (34.2%), neral (25.9%), and myrcene (12.5%). The MICLaEO I was 1 mg/mL for both strains. LaEO I positively modulated the action of ciprofloxacin, cefepime, and ceftriaxone. After the first hour of treatment with MICLaEO I, the cell viability of the strains showed a 5 log10 CFU/mL reduction, and the LaEO I-CIP association was able to inhibit growth during the first 6 h of the test. Regarding the anti-biofilm activity, MICLaEO I was able to reduce the biofilm mass of Salmonella typhi by 61.2% and of Shigella dysenteriae by 38.9%. MICLaEO I was not able to eradicate the preformed biofilm; however, there was a reduction in the biofilm microbial viability. LaEO I has the potential to be used as an antimicrobial agent and interferes with biofilm formation; also, it is able to reduce cell viability in preformed biofilm and synergistically modulate the activity of ciprofloxacin.

We report the results of a U-series isotope study on Eemian lake sediments from Hollerup, western Denmark. The purpose is to examine the possibility of dating these, and similar, sediments with the 238U-23"h method. Two sedimentary facies were studied; carbonate-present, and virtually carbonate-free but organic-rich sediments. All carbonate-present sediments (5-95%) have (230ThP38U) values higher than unity and relatively radiogenic (23"W232Th) values between 2 and 6.5, indicating postdeposition removal of U, probably by percolation of ground water. Carbonate-free sediments, but with high organic content (40-60%) had (230Th/238U) values lower than 1 and 'model ages' between 89 and 199 ky. The large spread in ages and variation in U content for these sediment samples that were deposited over a much shorter time interval, indicate a complex postdepositional migration pattern of U, probably involving several episodes of leaching and absorption of U from ground water. Our results suggest that lake sediments, such as those found in Hollerup, are vulnerable to mobilization of U and its decay products and care should be taken when interpreting U-series disequilibrium data from such sediments. Future studies will concentrate on sediments that have been more deeply buried andor are less compacted and sealed from percolation of oxidized groundwater.

A fish pond with recommended water quality will produce healthy fishes. Fish ponds with poor water quality will cause fish mortality and outbreak of diseases to fish consumers. Physicochemical analysis was done using standard analytical methods, the total bacterial count was determined by dilution and membrane filtration techniques. Parasitological analysis was done using the centrifugation method. A total of fifteen well waters were sampled during wet season. Results showed that the temperature ranged from 27°C to 29°C, pH, 6.21 to 8.15; dissolved oxygen, 4.28 mg/l to 5.78 mg/l, electrical conductivity, 166.36 µs/cm to 394.00 µs/cm; total dissolved solids, 41 mg/l to 121 mg/l; total suspended solids, 1.00 mg/l to 19.40 mg/l; total solids, 42.00 mg/l to 140.4 mg/l; turbidity values, 7.01 NTU to 10.36 NTU; nitrate, 3.10 mg/l to 28.00 mg/l; total alkalinity, 36 mg/l to 91 mg/l; phosphate, 1.26 mg/l to 13.11 mg/l; sulphate, 0.39 mg/l to 4.37 mg/l; total chloride, 7.08 mg/l to 14.19 mg/l; carbonates, 1.33 mg/l to 2.35 mg/l; bicarbonates, 34.59 mg/l to 89.38 mg/l; total hardness, 25.31 mg/l to 53.04 mg/l; calcium hardness, 23.94 mg/l to 51.96 mg/l; magnesium hardness, 1.08 mg/l to 4.20 mg/l; total acidity, 2 mg/l to 22 mg/l; potassium, 0.04 mg/l to 2.23 mg/l; cadmium, 0.00 mg/l to 0.04 mg/l; lead, 0.01 mg/l - 0.16 mg/l; chromium, 0.00 mg/l - 0.03 mg/l; mercury was not detected, copper, 0.00 mg/l - 0.04 mg/l; arsenic, 0.00 mg/l - 0.02 mg/l; zinc, 0.00 mg/l to 0.02 mg/l; iron, 0.01 mg/l - 1.19 mg/l. The total bacterial counts ranged from 3.60-4.12 log cfu/ml; total coliforms, 14-46 cfu/100ml, Vibrio cholerae, 0-11 cfu/100ml; Vibrio parahaemolyticus, 0-15 cfu/100ml; faecal coliform, 1-9 cfu/100 ml; Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, 0-8 cfu/100 ml; Bacillus subtilis, 0-9 cfu/ml; Staphylococcus aureus, 0-5 cfu/ml; Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 0-12 cfu/100 ml; Pseudomonas fluorescens, 0-12 cfu/100 ml and Clostridium perfringens were not detected in any of the samples. Twelve bacterial species namely Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Bacillus subtilis, Shigella flexineri and Salmonella typhi were isolated and identified using standard analytical and molecular procedures. Parasites identified were Ichthyobodo species, Diplostomum species, Myxobolus species, Chilodonella species, Bothriocephalus species, Ambiphrya species and Leech species. Salmonella typhi had the highest frequency of isolation (20.63%) while Acinetobacter calcoaceticus and Staphylococcus aureus had the lowest frequency of isolation (2.83%). Ichthyobodo species had the highest frequency of isolation (21.43%) while Leech species had the lowest frequency of isolation (5.71%). Some of the physicochemical, bacteriological and parasitological parameters had values above World Health Organization admissible limits and therefore proper sanitary practices and water treatments must be employed to prevent epidemic among fish consumers.
