Background Federal zero-tolerance policies require the exclusion of students exhibiting violent behaviors, with the intent of maintaining a safe school environment for other students to learn. In California, legislation has been passed that provides for the placement of expelled students in community day schools (CDSs). Purpose This study examines the daily practices of teachers in one CDS in order to begin to build a literature base about these contexts. Drawing from the theory of pastoral care, the study examines the way teachers implement casework, classroom management, and curriculum and instruction. Setting Data collection for this study occurred at Vista Hermosa Community Day School (VHCDS), which serves at least 100 district students throughout the course of a given school year and represents a typical urban CDS. During the semester that data collection occurred, enrollment ranged from 21 to 52 students. Participants All the teachers, administrators, counselors, and support staff at Vista Hermosa agreed to participate. In comparison with the district and state, students at Vista Hermosa are disproportionately male and from low-income, ethnic minority backgrounds. Conversely, teachers are disproportionately Caucasian, though also disproportionately male. Research Design and Data Collection This study used a multiple case study approach by first analyzing individual teachers’ practices at one urban CDS and then generalizing across classrooms to draw conclusions. Seventy-five hours of school-based observations, semi-structured interviews with 9 teachers, 17 students, 14 counselors and administrators, and relevant documents provided data for analysis. Data Analysis Codes for this study drew directly from the theoretical framework of pastoral care. Case reports for each teacher provided material for interpretive analyses. The creation of narrative case summaries finalized the data reduction process and then became material for cross-case analyses. Findings Data show that casework, curriculum, and classroom management mutually reinforce each other in educating persistently disciplined students at this school. This finding is significant because it suggests that teachers’ success or failure in CDS contexts depends on their attention to, and successful implementation of, all three areas of practice. Typically, each of these constructs stands alone in discussions regarding teaching and learning. Conclusions This study suggests that CDS teachers need access to high-quality, relevant professional development tailored to the CDS context. Providing such support as a prevention strategy to teachers in comprehensive schools rather than after students commit disciplinary offenses may successfully preclude their exclusion from comprehensive schools.

Smartphone are tools that help life, even become daily needs for adolescents in Vocational High School (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan or SMK) who live in urban areas. Unfortunately, not a few teenagers experience problems due to excessive smartphone use. These can include physical problems such as problems with the eyes, movement, and body position; as well as psychological problems such as unharmonious relationships with the people around them, or feeling dependent on devices. There are not many studies that describe the behavior and regulation of smartphone use in adolescents, especially vocational high school students in Indonesia. This study aims to obtain a description of the behavior of smartphone use among vocational high school students, as well as the settings up of regulations by the home and school environment. Participants are 1.921 high school students in 5 cities in 5 provinces in Indonesia (West Kalimantan, Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY), Bangka Belitung Islands, North Sulawesi, and Central Java). Data collection was carried out through a survey with a questionnaire specially designed by the researcher. Data collection was carried out before the COVID-19 Pandemic occurred. The results showed that in the period before the COVID-19 Pandemic, most students used smartphones for about 4-8 hours per day, for communication purposes. In addition, parents and schools make regulations regarding the use of smartphones. The results of this study can provide an overview, as well as a comparison for the description of the behavior of device use after the outbreak of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Abstract Background The prevalence of consuming fast foods and non-nutritious snacks is progressively increasing among adolescents. This study aimed to explore factors behind snack consumption at school among Iranian high-school students. Methods This descriptive qualitative study was conducted in 2017 in four boys’ and four girls’ high-schools located in Isfahan, Khorramabad, and Tehran, Iran. Data were collected through 42 in-depth semi-structured interviews and four focus groups with male and female students, their parents, and their school teachers and administrators. The conventional content analysis approach was used for data analysis. Trustworthiness was applied to the study through prolonged engagement, maximum variation sampling, and member checking techniques. Results Factors behind students’ snack consumption came into two main groups, namely influential behaviors, and influential emotions and perceptions. Influential behaviors included the behaviors of students, their family members, peers, school administrators, and snack sellers. Moreover, influential emotions and perceptions included positive and negative feelings towards healthy snacks, fear over the consequences of unhealthy snacks, and perceived positive outcomes of healthy snacks. Conclusions Students’ snack consumption at school is affected not only by their own behaviors, emotions, and perceptions, but also by significant others’ behaviors and environmental factors. School administrators need to make environmental modifications to turn school environment into a pleasant place for healthy snack consumption and make healthy snack consumption a pleasurable experience for students.

The chapter reports on the results of research carried out over the last two years on the state of e-business developments within ERP environments worldwide. Structured interviews were used to collect data in two stages. The first group of organisations was drawn from Australia and the results from this stage used to refine the data collection instrument. The second group consisted of relatively mature ERP based organisations from a range of industries around the world. The findings were analysed according to an established research framework from Business Process Change. This showed that while facilitators in aspects of e-business change management such as cultural readiness, knowledge and learning capabilities and relationship building were recognised by organisations, the extent to which they were incorporated as part of the implementation varied greatly. This suggests a rich field for future research study regarding the success of e-ERP projects.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the knowledge and practices of nursing professionals in caring for people with colostomy bag. Method: a qualitative and descriptive study conducted with 21 nursing professionals from a General Surgery Unit. Data collection used triangulation of techniques, based on non-participant observation, analysis of nursing records, and semi-structured interviews. Analysis followed the spiral technique assumptions. Results: it was possible to comprehend the theoretical and scientific knowledge that subsidize practice; identify contradictions related to statement and care in the profession’s daily work and the intervening factors, which can facilitate and/or make the nursing care process difficult. Final Considerations: knowledge and practices of professionals in caring for ostomates occur within work experiences, in which socialization of knowledge makes it possible to expand the perspectives of care.

Culture, tourism and development: insights on the potential exploration of archeological rock art in Carnaúba dos Dantas (RN, Brazil) ABSTRACT The primary objective of this study was to identify opportunities and bottlenecks for the development of archeological tourism in the Seridó Potiguar region, particularly in the municipality of Carnaúba dos Dantas. Archeological tourism, when well planned and organized, can serve as an instrument for protecting, promoting and potentiating the archeological heritage of a determined region. The methodology used in this study consisted of a literature review involving concepts associated with the topic in question, followed by a second phase involving data collection through fieldwork using the following data collection methods: participant observation, semi-structured interviews and photographic recording. The results indicate that there is a significant potential in Carnaúba dos Dantas to develop archeological tourism such as the existence of attractions that can be planned for organized visits in a systematic way. By contrast, it was observed a lack of knowledge and information among residents of the rural area in respect to the historical and cultural relevance of the rock art and this represents the primary bottleneck to development of this tourism segment. These findings suggest that, if the archeological tourism segment is approached in synergy among public, private and third party stakeholders, it could serve as an economic alternative to cattle raising, agriculture and mining for residents of the region.
