Protein Solvent Interaction: Transition of Protein-solvent Interaction Concept from Basic Research into Solvent Manipulation of Chromatography

Previously, we have reviewed in this journal (Arakawa, T., Kita, Y., Curr. Protein Pept. Sci., 15, 608-620, 2014) the interaction of arginine with proteins and various applications of this solvent additive in the area of protein formulations and downstream processes. In this special issue, we expand the concept of protein-solvent interaction into the analysis of the effects of solvent additives on various column chromatography, including mixed-mode chromatography. Earlier in our research, we have studied the interactions of such a variety of solvent additives as sugars, salts, amino acids, polymers and organic solvents with a variety of proteins, which resulted in mechanistic understanding on their protein stabilization and precipitation effects, the latter known as Hofmeister series. While such a study was then a pure academic research, rapid development of genetic engineering technologies and resultant biotechnologies made it a valuable knowledge in fully utilizing solvent additives in manipulation of protein solution, including column chromatography.

AbstractWith the rapid development of terahertz technologies, basic research and applications of terahertz waves in biomedicine have attracted increasing attention. The rotation and vibrational energy levels of biomacromolecules fall in the energy range of terahertz waves; thus, terahertz waves might interact with biomacromolecules. Therefore, terahertz waves have been widely applied to explore features of the terahertz spectrum of biomacromolecules. However, the effects of terahertz waves on biomacromolecules are largely unexplored. Although some progress has been reported, there are still numerous technical barriers to clarifying the relation between terahertz waves and biomacromolecules and to realizing the accurate regulation of biological macromolecules by terahertz waves. Therefore, further investigations should be conducted in the future. In this paper, we reviewed terahertz waves and their biomedical research advantages, applications of terahertz waves on biomacromolecules and the effects of terahertz waves on biomacromolecules. These findings will provide novel ideas and methods for the research and application of terahertz waves in the biomedical field.

The number of data sources available for academic research on retirement economics and policy has increased rapidly in the past two decades. Data quality and comparability across studies have also improved considerably, with survey questionnaires progressively converging towards common ways of eliciting the same measurable concepts. Probability-based Internet panels have become a more accepted and recognized tool to obtain research data, allowing for fast, flexible, and cost-effective data collection compared to more traditional modes such as in-person and phone interviews. In an era of big data, academic research has also increasingly been able to access administrative records (e.g., Kostøl and Mogstad, 2014; Cesarini et al., 2016), private-sector financial records (e.g., Gelman et al., 2014), and administrative data married with surveys (Ameriks et al., 2020), to answer questions that could not be successfully tackled otherwise.

In this Special Issue, directed and supervised by Dr. Mehdi Najar, a collection of basic research articles and reviews, on the state of the art of Mesenchymal Stem/Stromal Cells (MSCs) immune biology, is presented. Among the major goals of this Special Issue is the presentation of an update about the immunomodulatory properties of MSCs and their capacity to respond to tissue microenvironment changes. MSCs hold great promise in the field of immunotherapy and regenerative medicine. Accordingly, a better understanding of MSC immune biology will improve their therapeutic value and use.

Religious topics are increasingly addressed in journalism worldwide, including newspapers, television, radio and Internet news. The high visibility of religion in society and, inseparably connected to this, the increasing reappearance of religious themes in news media have come to the attention of recent academic research as well.This special issue offers new research material on the topic but also a new design and system of organizing the field. The novel approach of this special issue is threefold: (1) it focuses specifically and only on journalistic media; (2) it discusses a variety of religious and geographical contexts through case studies; and (3) it introduces a new structure of discussing journalism and religion by analyzing the three key concepts “sacred”, “secular” and “authority” through the lens of Laclau’s (1996, pp. 36) approach to terms as empty signifiers. The articles analyze how news media ascribe meanings to these terms.

Abstract Background An important task in the interpretation of sequencing data is to highlight pathogenic genes (or detrimental variants) in the field of Mendelian diseases. It is still challenging despite the recent rapid development of genomics and bioinformatics. A typical interpretation workflow includes annotation, filtration, manual inspection and literature review. Those steps are time-consuming and error-prone in the absence of systematic support. Therefore, we developed GTX.Digest.VCF, an online DNA sequencing interpretation system, which prioritizes genes and variants for novel disease-gene relation discovery and integrates text mining results to provide literature evidence for the discovery. Its phenotype-driven ranking and biological data mining approach significantly speed up the whole interpretation process. Results The GTX.Digest.VCF system is freely available as a web portal at http://vcf.gtxlab.com for academic research. Evaluation on the DDD project dataset demonstrates an accuracy of 77% (235 out of 305 cases) for top-50 genes and an accuracy of 41.6% (127 out of 305 cases) for top-5 genes. Conclusions GTX.Digest.VCF provides an intelligent web portal for genomics data interpretation via the integration of bioinformatics tools, distributed parallel computing, biomedical text mining. It can facilitate the application of genomic analytics in clinical research and practices.

The recent advances in detecting and locating damage in bridges by different kinds of non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) methods are reviewed. From the application point of view, classifications for general bridge components and their damage types are presented. The relationships between damage, bridge components, and NDT&E techniques are summarized. Many useful WEB sources of NDT&E techniques in bridge damage detection are given. It is concluded that: (1) vibration-based damage detection methods are successful to a certain extent, especially when the overall damage is significant and, low frequency vibration can identify those areas where more detailed local inspection should be concentrated; (2) robust identification techniques that are able to locate damage based on realistic measured data sets still seem a long way from reality, and, basic research is still necessary in the mean time; (3) the rapid development of computer technology and digital signal processing (DSP) techniques greatly impacts upon the conventional NDT techniques, especially in control data processing and data displaying, as well as in simulation and modeling; (4) most of the NDT&E techniques introduced in this paper have their own practical commercial systems, but the effort required for combining the theoretical, experimental and engineering achievements, is still a challenging task when establishing the relationship between the unknown quantities and the measured signal parameters and specialised instruments have shown great advantages for doing some things more effectively than general ones; (5) in bridge damage detection, a problem usually requires the application of different NDT&E techniques; two or more independent techniques are needed to enable confidence in the results.

In the last decade, artificial intelligence (AI) has undergone many important developments in China and has risen to the level of national strategy, which is closely related to the areas of research and policy promotion. The interactive relationship between the hotspots of China’s international AI research and its national-level policy keywords is the basis for further clarification and reference in academics and political circles. There has been very little research on the interaction between academic research and policy making. Understanding the relationship between the content of academic research and the content emphasized by actual operational policy will help scholars to better apply research to practice, and help decision-makers to manage effectively. Based on 3577 English publications about AI published by Chinese scholars in 2009–2018, and 262 Chinese national-level policy documents published during this period, this study carried out scientometric analysis and quantitative analysis of policy documents through the knowledge maps of AI international research hotspots in China and the co-occurrence maps of Chinese policy keywords, and conducted a comparative analysis that divided China’s AI development into three stages: the initial exploration stage, the steady rising stage, and the rapid development stage. The studies showed that in the initial exploration stage (2009–2012), research hotspots and policy keywords had a certain alienation relationship; in the steady rising stage (2013–2015), research hotspots focused more on cutting-edge technologies and policy keywords focused more on macro-guidance, and the relationship began to become close; and in the rapid development stage (2016–2018), the research hotspots and policy keywords became closely integrated, and they were mutually infiltrated and complementary, thus realizing organic integration and close connection. Through comparative analysis between international research hotspots and national-level policy keywords on AI in China from 2009 to 2018, the development of AI in China was revealed to some extent, along with the interaction between academics and politics in the past ten years, which is of great significance for the sustainable development and effective governance of China’s artificial intelligence.

Despite an increasing number of techniques that are designed to mitigate microbial contamination of food and the resulting food borne disease outbreaks, the United States and many other countries across the world continue to experience impressive numbers of such outbreaks. Microbial contamination can occur during activities that take place in the pre-harvest environment or in the processing facility post-harvest. Current treatments of food that are aimed at reducing bacterial numbers may be only partially effective because of the development of bacterial resistance, the formation of bacterial biofilms, and inactivation of the treatment compound by the food products themselves. This Special Issue will include basic research approaches that are aimed at enhancing our understanding of how contamination occurs throughout the food processing chain, as well as more immediate and applied approaches to the development and use of novel anti-microbials to combat microbes in food. Novel techniques that aim to evaluate the efficacy of novel anti-microbials are included. Overall, we present a broad spectrum of novel approaches to reduce microbial contamination on food at all stages of production.

In this article, I tried to illustrate a brief history of Buddhist Studies in the Western world and role of Mongolian Buddhism in its history and future prospects. Buddhist Studies is an independent academic discipline that pioneered by outstanding Western scholars and it covers roughly 200 years. In the modern world, Buddhist Studies has formed interdisciplinary academic research, and expands its research area with new requirements of society and newly discovered manuscripts. From the outset of the Buddhist Studies, western scholars involved with Mongolian Buddhism and manuscripts; however, unfortunately Buddhist Studies in the Mongolian context could not develop in parallel with its rapid development. In other words, Mongolian Buddhism comparatively has been slighted in the past history of Buddhist Studies. The researches by domestic scholars have been reviving after 1960. Only foreign scholars do conspicuous researches on the Mongolian Buddhism, but domestic scholars are not active on the academic research due to some reasons. First of all we should define what makes Buddhism “Mongolian”. We should describe identity of the Mongolian Buddhism, and then we able to analyze its past, present and future prospects. I assume the following five tendencies explore researches of the Mongolian Buddhism.Assimilation of Buddhism with Mongolian tradition and customs, syncretism of Buddhism and Mongolian traditional shamanism Distinctive character of Mongolian monasticism, secularity, role of Buddhism in the Mongolian society Study of ethnic Mongolian lamas as influential historical figuresResearch of Mongolian Canons and other sources in Mongolian language, and their translation Study on Tibetan and Mongolian works by Mongolian lamas in comparison with doctrinally affiliated works
