A multivariate discriminate analysis of laboratory variables collected over a period of three to five years for 502 healthy male veterans showed that 5 variables (fasting blood glucose, blood glucose two hours following ingestion of 100 gm. of glucose, total serum protein, hemoglobin, and cholesterol esters) were changing significantly in the 222 subjects who were over 50 years of age on entry into this study. It took the combined effect of fifteen variables to predict any age change in the subgroup of 280 subjects who were 25–49 at time of entry. A further subgrouping of current cigarette smokers and those who had never smoked showed no significant difference in the laboratory data in either age cohort.

Recent studies have demonstrated thatα-Smooth Muscle actin expression in glomerular and tubulointerstitial compartments of renal tissue could represent a prognostic marker in several renal diseases. Our objective was to identify the prognostic value ofα-SM actin actin expression on the evolution of renal damage in Primary IgA nephropathy (Berger’s Disease). 43 patients followed up from 1988 to 1999 at the University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo, Brazil, was studied. Clinical-laboratory data were obtained from the medical records of the patients using a protocol containing name, race, gender, origin, profession, age at clinical presentation of the disease and personal and family history. The parameters assessed in the approach to IgA nephropathy were serum creatinine, creatinine clearance, serum albumin, total serum protein, 24 hours proteinuria, glycaemia, serum sodium, potassium, calcium and phosphorus ions, analysis of urinary sediment, serum complement profile, blood count, and renal biopsy. Morphological evaluation was performed by renal biopsy using common light and immunofluorescence microscopy. Immunohistochemical studies were performed using a murine monoclonal antibody toα-SM actin. Our data showed thatα-SM actin expression in the glomerular and tubulointerstitial compartments are not correlated with unfavorable clinical course of primary IgA nephropathy.

Abstract Background Gestational diabetes is the most common medical complication in pregnancy, and it has many side effects for the mother and the fetus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of oat bran consumption on gestational diabetes. Methods This study is a randomized clinical trial that was performed on 112 women with gestational diabetes treated with diet. Participants were randomly divided into two groups of 56. Participants in both groups were given a diet for gestational diabetes. In addition to the diet, the intervention group received 30 g of oat bran daily for 4 weeks at lunch and dinner. Tests of fasting blood glucose and two-hour postprandial (2hpp) glucose were taken from both groups: before the intervention, and 2 and 4 weeks after the start of the intervention. Data analysis was performed using SPSS statistical software (version 22) using independent t-test, as well as Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests. P values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of mean blood glucose before the intervention, while 2 and 4 weeks after the intervention, mean fasting blood glucose and two-hour postprandial (2hpp) glucose decreased significantly in the intervention group compared with the control group (P < 0.001). Conclusion Based on the results of this study, the addition of oat bran to the standard diet for pregnant women with gestational diabetes reduced fasting blood glucose and two-hour postprandial (2hpp) glucose. More detailed studies with higher sample sizes are recommended to prove the effectiveness of this valuable dietary supplement. Trial registration IRCT registration number:IRCT20191220045828N1. Abstract In study of intra-individual variation of serum constituents, we used analysis of variance to separate biological from analytical variation, the latter being estimated from results for duplicate specimens. However, the replication error term in such a model may grossly overestimate instrumental variability, especially when a significant pre-instrumental error component is present. To separate pre-instrumental and instrumental error, we used the following experimental design: Duplicate serum specimens were obtained from 88 healthy men, the blood being collected at one venipuncture and immediately divided into two portions. The duplicates were randomized and analyzed on one occasion with the "AutoChemist Multi-Channel Analyzer," and pre-instrumental variation was estimated from the results. Instrumental variation was estimated from results for three independent populations with widely different mean analyte concentrations; these samples were analyzed at the same time as the samples just mentioned. Of the 20 serum constituents assayed, sodium, potassium, iron, total lipids, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and total bilirubin showed significant pre-instrumental error components, as evidenced from significant χ2-tests comparing analytical and "duplicate sample" variation. For total serum protein, albumin, total lipids, cholesterol, and alkaline phosphatase, we found a significant difference (by paired t-test) between values for the first and second specimen.

This Research was conducted to determine the effect of ethanol extract from red chilli (Capsicum annuum L)in lowering blood glucose levels of hyperglycemic male white mices. This study used 30 malewhitemices and divided into 6 groups: negative control group, the positive control group, the treatmentgroup withdosage of 200 mg / kgweight, 400 mg / kgwieght, 600 mg / kg weight and a comparison group with glibenclamide with dosage of 5 mg / kgweightadministered orally for 21 days. The level of fasting blood glucose was checked 6 days after dexamethasone induced, and after the ethanol extract of red chilies on day 7th, 14th, and 21st. The data was analyzed statistically with one –way and two-way Anova by usingSPSS16 program and proceed with the test Duncan to look the significant difference between treatments. The results showed that the ethanol extract from red chilies with a dosage of 200mg / kgweight, 400mg / kgweight, 600 mg / kgweight showed the effect in lowering blood sugar levels in male white mices hyperglycemia significantly (p <0.05). The duration ethanol extract of red chili affected blood glucose levels. The most effective duration in lowering blood glucose levels is the administration of a preparation within 21 days.

Background: Hyperlipidemia is a common risk factor for diabetes that leads to cardiovascular disease, one of the causes of death of diabetic patients. Theaimof this study was to investigate the association between HbA1c levels and serum lipids in Libyan patients withtype 2 diabetes. Material and methods: The study was conducted in 2019 on 325 patients (174 males, 151 females) with type 2 diabetes referred to a private clinical laboratory in Tripoli, Libya. Blood samples were collected for measurement of HbA1c, fasting blood glucose and serum lipid concentrations. Diabetes was defined according to the American Diabetes Association criteria.The data were analyzed using an independent t-test and Pearson’scorrelation test.Results: The ages of the patients ranged from 40 to 83 years, with a mean of 51.52 ± 14.32 years SD. No significant correlation between HbA1c and age was noted (r=0.011, p=0.063). There was a significant positive correlation betweenHbA1c level and fasting blood glucose (r =0.641, p=0.000), low-density lipoprotein (r = 0.240, p = 0.000), total cholesterol (r = 0.223, p = 0.000) and triglycerides(r=0.140,p 0.067). The correlation between HbA1c and high-density lipoprotein-C was negative but not significant (r= -0.088, p = 0.123). Conclusion: HbA1c could be used as a predictor of dyslipidemia and thus it may serve as anindicator of the development of cardiovascular disease in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract Objectives The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a 6-month nutrition intervention to improve glycemic parameters and inflammation in prediabetic PLWH on stable ART with undetectable HIV viral load. Methods A 6-month randomized, controlled nutrition intervention was conducted in prediabetic PLWH. The study participants for the intervention were recruited from the Miami Adult Studies for HIV (MASH) cohort at the FIU-Borinquen Research Clinic. Upon their consent, the participants were randomized into the intervention group or the control group. Participants randomized in the intervention group met once a month for approximately 1 hour where they received medical nutrition therapy, nutrition counseling and nutrition education; participants randomized into the control group received educational material at baseline. Blood was drawn at baseline and at 6-month to measure fasting blood glucose (FBG) and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). Results A total of 38 participants were recruited and randomized into either the intervention group (n = 20) or the control group (n = 18). We found that the FBG for the 6-month follow-up for the intervention group was significantly lower than the baseline FBG values of the same study group (paired t-test; P = 0.031). No significant difference was found in the control group between the baseline and 6-month fasting blood glucose values (P = 0.068). Moreover, no significant difference was found in pre/post C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in the intervention or control group (paired t-test; P = 0.404 and P = 0.117 respectively). There was a significant difference in CRP levels at baseline (P = 0.028) between the study groups but no difference at the 6-month follow up (Mann Whitney U test: P = 0.430). Conclusions The results from this intervention support the notion that a nutrition intervention is effective in prediabetic PLWH to lower diabetes risk by significantly lowering fasting blood glucose and may be implemented into larger scale interventions; however, no significant changes was seen in hs-CRP values between the 2 groups. Aim: Antioxidants, such as vitamin C and vitamin E, is widely used as supplements. The aim of this study is to analyze the profile of blood glucose, serum insulin, and  HOMA in active teenagers after vitamin C and vitamin E supplementation.Methods: Subjects (14-16 y.o) consisted of 12 boys and 5 girls, divided into 3 groups: control (4 boys, 2 girls), ‘moderate dose’ of vitamin C and vitamin E combination group (5 boys, 1 girls), and ‘high dose’ of vitamin C and vitamin E combination group (3 boys, 2 girls). The treatment was given for 5 days. Vitamin C and vitamin E for ‘moderate dose’ was 500mg;  200IU, and for ‘high dose’ was 1000mg; 400IU. Fasting Blood Glucose (FGB) and 1 hour BG (1hr_BG), fasting serum insulin (FSI) and 1 hour SI (1hr_SI) was collected after treatment. We also calculated the HOMA-IR and HOMA-β.Result: There was no significant difference on FBG, 1hr_BG, FSI, 1hr_SI, HOMA-IR, and HOMA-β (p≥ 0.05). However, mean FBG and 1hr_BG tended to be higher on the treatment groups. The control group had the lowest HOMA-IR and the highest HOMA-β.Conclusions: We suggest that the supplementation of vitamin C and vitamin E in active teenagers is not essential on glucose homeostasis.

Subject. It is important to develop methods for the diagnosis and treatment of secondary destructive parotitis (SDP) depending on the form of the disease. A working classification of SDP is proposed. The aim of the study is to improve the diagnosis of SDP by developing a program for early detection and differential diagnosis of forms of diseases. Methodology. The basis of this work was the examination and treatment of 287 patients with various forms of destructive parotitis. Results. In 103 patients with SDP, the disease occurred as a monoabsccess and with the formation of multiple small-focal abscesses. Changes in indicators of metabolic processes, hemostasis and immunity did not exceed the limits of possible physiological fluctuations. In 62 patients with phlegmonous form of SDP, a significant decrease in total serum protein was observed (by 8%). When combined with SDP and pancreatic pathology, the level of amylase increased 3 to 4 times. Of the 122 patients with SDP 14% were dominated by alterations in the local inflammatory response and the development of general complications in the form of sepsis. There are two main states of life support systems: unstable compensation and decompensation. Conclusions. Clinical and laboratory manifestations of SDP dictate the expediency of identifying the main forms of the course of the disease which are characterized by certain clinical and laboratory data. Given the real threat of the spread of acute inflammatory process, the development of local and general complications, treatment of SDP should be performed only in a specialized maxillofacial hospital.

Type 1 Diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is associated with abnormal liver function, but the exact mechanism is unclear. Cordycepin improves hepatic metabolic pathways leading to recovery from liver damage. We investigated the effects of cordycepin in streptozotocin-induced T1DM mice via the expression of liver proteins. Twenty-four mice were divided into four equal groups: normal (N), normal mice treated with cordycepin (N+COR), diabetic mice (DM), and diabetic mice treated with cordycepin (DM+COR). Mice in each treatment group were intraperitoneally injection of cordycepin at dose 24 mg/kg for 14 consecutive days. Body weight, blood glucose, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates were measured. Liver tissue protein profiling was performed using shotgun proteomics, while protein function and protein-protein interaction were predicted using PANTHER and STITCH v.5.0 software, respectively. No significant difference was observed in fasting blood glucose levels between DM and DM+COR for all time intervals. However, a significant decrease in final body weight, food intake, and water intake in DM+COR was found. Hepatic oxaloacetate and citrate levels were significantly increased in DM+COR compared to DM. Furthermore, 11 and 36 proteins were only expressed by the N+COR and DM+COR groups, respectively. Three unique proteins in DM+COR, namely, Nfat3, Flcn, and Psma3 were correlated with the production of ATP, AMPK signaling pathway, and ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS), respectively. Interestingly, a protein detected in N+COR and DM+COR (Gli3) was linked with the insulin signaling pathway. In conclusion, cordycepin might help in preventing hepatic metabolism by regulating the expression of energy-related protein and UPS to maintain cell survival. Further work on predicting the performance of metabolic mechanisms regarding the therapeutic applications of cordycepin will be performed in future.
