This paper examines the role of Natural Protected Areas (NPAs) as a source of economic spillovers for mass tourism destinations in Mexico. An econometric model was used to explain the number of booked rooms in tourism destinations as a function of proximity to NPAs, controlling for destination characteristics. A conservative estimate suggests that some rooms booked by foreign visitors can be explained by proximity to NPAs. Our results open public policy options, such as a compensating mechanism from conventional tourism to fund NPAs and show that they would be economically efficient and contribute to sustainability.

Urban tourist destinations or City Break destinations are representing one of main destination products on tourist market. City Break destinations are big cities, administrative, economic and political centers of states and regions. These cities are 'open' 24 hours per day, seven days in week. Inside these tourist destination we can find different range of products (culture, entertainment, recreation, leisure, history, modern infrastructure). In these destinations season is not present and it lasts trough out the year. Promotional campaigns in City Break destinations are truing to create distinguished images in tourists mind as also as on investors, consumers and future residents. They emphasize advantages that those cities are delivering to their consumers, but often we forget that all these cities are having specific geographic landscapes. In the era of limiting of mass tourism to preserve resources for future generations and emphasizing the importance of sustainable development for tourism perspectives, the importance of specific geographic landscapes inside urban destinations for their further development as tourist destinations an their overall development is slightly neglected.

Abstract This chapter proposes an alternative model for analysing the tourism experience in nature-based tourism destinations (NBTDs): a qualitative approach that enables interpretation of the complex and hermeneutical nature of tourism experiences. The model rests on three pillars: (i) comprehension of the attributes comprising sense of place (SP); (ii) understanding the links between visitors and the sites where tourism experiences occur; and (iii) interpretation of the perceived benefits of tourism experience in NBTDs. The model was applied in two natural protected areas in Spain and Chile. The findings demonstrate that the model facilitates the identification of meanings that NBTD visitors assign to their experience and enables us to establish links between visitors, tourists and the territory.

AbstractThis article develops a conceptual framework for analyzing the role of state-level policies towards the dairy sector in the presence of farmland amenity benefits, and applies it to Connecticut. Milk supply, demand and amenity benefit functions are estimated, and three exogenously determined milk prices are considered. The empirical findings show, under each price scenario, the extent to which land is underallocated to the dairy sector if amenity benefits are ignored. Analysis of policy options reveals that a partial production cost subsidy represents the least-cost alternative for attaining the socially optimal solution for the region.

Community-Based Tourism (CBT) has become a new trend for local-based development. However, many villages have not developed this potentiality as a new commodity as a tourism-based community. For this reason, this article explains three important elements in the development of community-based tourism in the Sekapuk Village community, Gresik Regency, East Java, namely following the potential, participation, and development of Setigi tourism. This research highlights three critical issues concerning i) how the role of local communities in maximizing village potential, ii) how Community-Based Tourism practices work effectively in increasing community social awareness, and iii) how communities build new tourist destinations. The research method using observation in Setigi tourism, interviews with village leaders, managers of Tourism Awareness Group/Kelompok Sadar Wisata (Pokdarwis), local traders, and visitors. The indication of community has built Setigi tourist destinations by utilizing the potential of nature. Meanwhile, CBT is implemented in environmental conservation, tourism training, accessibility of transformation, and the development of communication systems. Setigi tourism is built based on social participation, which results in nature-based tourism destinations, the development of the Mbok Inggih kitchen, and the home industry. As a successful tourist village development, the village has achieved the icon of the Millionaire Village. Nevertheless, in the end, Setigi tourism still has limitations in optimizing the socio-cultural and socio-religious potential.

Purpose Local government has a significant role to play in securing sustainable destination development. This paper aims to identify the strengths, weaknesses and challenges of municipalities in North Cyprus as they aspire to become sustainable Cittaslow tourism destinations. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative research approach was used to observe the perceptions of municipalities as they transition to become sustainable Cittaslow tourism destinations. The data have been obtained through in-depth interviews with the mayors of the municipalities that are members of the international Cittaslow network. Findings The results of the study show how alternative forms of tourism could help to improve the local economy. Also, the reasons for challenges and weaknesses are explained by the limited economic conditions of countries, high demand for mass tourism and lack of awareness about the importance of being a Cittaslow member. Practical implications This study reflects on the critical points in relation to the destination’s management at the local level. It also provides empirical indicators for achieving sustainable tourism development in North Cyprus. Originality/value This study contributes to the tourism literature by addressing municipalities' roles in the sustainability of tourism destinations in developing countries, more specifically in North Cyprus. A review of the literature reveals that there are very few prior studies of the role of municipalities in sustainable Cittaslow tourism.

A B S T R A C TEnvironment is not just a stage, but at the same time a reflection of the human (in) action during the time, understood based on the dialectic of physical-natural, socio-cultural, economic and political-institutional issues, under a trans-transverse and transdisciplinary perspective. The role of tourism’s public policies should promote development, ensuring the equitable distribution of the benefits generated by tourism among all socio-environmental actors in the tourist destinations. However, it occurs, frequently, a reductionist view of the environment as well as there is not a holistic view of tourism’s public policy, including the government agencies responsible for the management of tourism. The objective of this work is to point out some concepts of development, seeking to elucidate some relevant issues related to the subject in the context of postmodernity and propose a new concept of environment and tourism’s public policy. Searching for carrying out this objective, we consulted the main authors who dealt with the theme, and we concluded that the environment and tourism’s public policies require a complex treatment, going beyond fragmented and limited point of view. Keywords: Environment; Tourism; Public Policy

A key component towards sustainability in coastal tourist destinations is to establish monitoring and evaluation schemes in order to measure the impacts of tourism on the economy, society and the environment. Although there is a great deal of frameworks providing the methodological baseline for developing the essential monitoring schemes, the relevant literature has shown that a challenge still exists on adapting these general frameworks to the particularities of the destinations under assessment. This paper presents a framework that measures and monitors sustainability at the local level by introducing a three-tier system of indicators. The framework manages to incorporate the different types of tourism activities as well as the special characteristics of coastal tourist destinations in the Mediterranean while at the same time allows for comparisons among them. The paper emphasizes the role of local stakeholders’ engagement in the development of the monitoring framework and discusses the challenges that emerged during the process. Essentially, the paper provides an alternative way for adjusting general frameworks to allow sustainability evaluations at the local level. In this sense, five types of coastal tourism destinations have been identified as critical in the case of the Mediterranean: beach/maritime destinations, urban/cultural, cruising, recreational boating and nature/ecotourism destinations.

This chapter introduces the policy analysis in Colombia at a critical juncture in the country's history when having government officials capable of making evidence-based policy decisions is as important as ever. It evaluates the role of different levels of government, institutions of government, and actors outside of government in the development, implementation, and evaluation of public policy. It also highlights the degree to which analysis informs key substantive policy areas. The chapter details how governmental and nongovernmental institutions and actors have historically contributed to the analysis of policy options and outcomes. It describes Colombia as a country that exemplifies a particular path of development and has been able to configure a relatively developed public administration apparatus even with the presence of key institutional challenges.

Tourism in Croatia is on the turning point of its development. War devastation in Croatia negatively affected tourism. The process of restoration of Croatian tourism should not only renovate the ruined tourist facilities, but it should also overcome the disadvantages of the past development of tourism. One of the important factors of the variety and quality of tourist offer are sports-recreational activities and programmes which provide the possibility of active rest and recreation. In Croatian tourism, the sports-recreational offer has reached a certain level of development, but this offer is primarily oriented towards mass tourism. The policy of the development of Croatian tourism, which is directed towards strengthening of qualitative factors of tourist offer, expresses the need of innovating the sports-recreational offer which will be compatible with the new quality of Croatian tourism. This paper treats tourism and sport as interrelated fields, and emphasizes the factors of their interdependence. A short survey of historical interdependence of tourism and sport is also given in this paper. The role of sport in modern tourism is rather significant, because it becomes one of the essential motives for travelling to certain tourist destinations. The role of sport in tourism is manifested through numerous functions that are common to sport and tourism. These functions are: the health function, educational function, socio-political function and economic functions. Sport and recreation, apart from the fact that they enrich the tourist offer, often become the main motive for travelling to certain tourist destinations. Such trips represent a special selective type of tourism - the sports-recreational tourism. Apart from humanistic functions, sports-recreational tourism is the creator of certain economic values. The economic effects of sport in tourism are realized within tourist organizations, but also outside tourism (sporting equipment industry, building, handicraft trades, trade, etc.). This paper also gives the survey of the achieved economic effects of sport and recreation in Croatian tourism on the basis of several indicators: the number of the realized "sports room/nights", the number of users of sports-recreational services, and the achieved profit from sports-recreational services. These indicators also confirm the thesis that the sports-recreational services are an income-oriented category. The paper concludes with the evaluation of development possibilities of sports-recreational tourism in Croatia.
