Objectives: The present study was designed to estimate the influences of oral administration of aqueous extract of turmeric (Curcuma longa) in hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity induced in rats by isoniazid and rifampicin (RIF) for 4 weeks. Influences were determined through the estimation of liver and kidney functions and histopathological changes. Materials and Methods: A total of 48 male albino rats were randomly divided into six groups: Normal control, INH+RIF treated rats, Turmeric aqueous extract 100 mg/kg treated rats, Turmeric aqueous extract 100 mg/kg + INH and RIF treated rats, Turmeric aqueous extract 200 mg/kg treated rats, Turmeric aqueous extract 200 mg/kg+ INH and RIF treated rats. Turmeric aqueous extract and INH + RIF (50 mg/kg bwpo, daily) were given for 4 weeks. Liver and kidney function markers (aspartate transaminase [AST], alanine transaminase [ALT], alanine phosphatase [ALP], bilirubin, blood urea, and creatinine) were determined enzymatically. In addition, tissues of liver and kidney were quickly separated and fixed in 10% formalin and subjected to histopathological studies. Statistical analysis was carried out using t-test. Results: The aqueous extract of turmeric (at a dose of 100 and 200 mg/kg bw, p.o. daily ) showed hepato- and reno-protective effects in hepato- and reno- toxicity induced by RIF and INH in rats. Significant elevation of serum ALT, AST, ALP, total bilirubin, creatinine, urea, and total protein, due to RIF and INH treatment, were significantly decreased. The histopathological study further confirmed the biochemical results. Conclusion: Results of the present study indicated that turmeric has hepatoprotective and renoprotective action against RIF- and INH-induced hepatic and renal injury in rats.

<p><strong>Objective: </strong>The aim of the present study was to investigate the daily effect of pre and post treatment of carob aqueous extract (600 mg/kg b. wt.); on rats exposed to were exposed to water pipe smoke (10 mg/kg; 15 minutes) for 2, 4, 6 and 8 w.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Rats were divided into 6 groups; 1<sup>st</sup> group was served as a control. Rats of the 2<sup>nd</sup> group were administered amiodarone (an antiarrhythmic medication used as a model for lung toxicity) at a dose level of 30 mg/kg. The rats of 3<sup>rd</sup> and 4<sup>th</sup> groups were exposed to water pipe smoke and treated with carob extract respectively. However, the two remaining groups (5<sup>th</sup> and 6<sup>th</sup>) were the pre-and post-treatment groups with carob extract respectively.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Amiodarone and water pipe smoke induced a significant increase in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP); on the contrary, induced a significant decrease in serum total protein and albumin. In addition; serum creatinine and urea showed a significant increase; as well as; amiodarone and water pipe smoke increased the oxidative stress (malondialdehyde/glutathione; MDA/GSH) in lung tissue homogenate. While; carob extract gavage showed protective and curative effects in liver and kidney functions; in addition; it decreased MDA level and increased GSH level significantly.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Finally, we can conclude that the carob aqueous extract treatment revealed ameliorative effects on rats were exposed to water pipe smoke.</p>

Background: This study was aimed to evaluate the protective effects of a novel anti-hyperglycemic “Mcy protein” isolated from the fruits of Momordica cymbalaria in streptozotocin induced- diabetes rat model. Materials and Methods: Wild type and Streptozotocin induced diabetic male wistar albino rats were either treated with single intraperitoneal injection of 2.5 mg Mcy protein/kg body weight or acetate buffer daily for 30 days. Fasting blood glucose and, serum and tissue lipid levels were measured along with biochemical analysis for hepatic and renal function tests. Results: Mcy protein significantly reduced the fasting blood glucose and, serum as well as tissue lipid levels (p<0.05), besides normalizing the levels of liver and kidney function markers in the treated diabetic rats when compared to the diabetic controls. Our studies also showed the pancreatic islet regeneration in Mcy treated rats. Conclusion: Mcy protein can alleviate hyperlipidemia and help manage diabetes by stimulating insulin secretion without evident toxic effects on liver and kidney.

The study investigates the effects of aqueous extract of Bougainvillea spectabilis leaves on blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, lipid profile, oxidative stress, and on DNA damage, if any, as well as on liver and kidney functions in streptozotocin-induced diabetes in Wistar rats. Daily administration of the aqueous extract of B spectabilis leaves for 28 days resulted in significant reduction in hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia as evident from restoration of relevant biochemical markers following extract administration. The extract also exhibited significant antioxidant activity as evidenced from the enzymatic and nonenzymatic responses and DNA damage markers. The extract restored kidney and liver functions to normal and proved to be nontoxic. A marked improvement in the histological changes of tissues was also observed. The present study documented antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic, and antioxidative potentials of the aqueous extract of B spectabilis leaves without any toxicity in streptozotocin-treated Wistar rats.

Abstract The study was designed to clarify the hepato-renal protective effects of propolis extract against heavy metals-induced toxicity via oral administration to the males of albino rats. Lead (Pb), Nickel (Ni), Cadmium (Cd), and Antimony (Sb) are toxic heavy metals have the ability to produce reactive radicals in the biological systems causing public and animals health hazards through disrupting balances between pro-oxidant and antioxidant defense system, resulting in excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The most commonly affected organs are liver and kidney. Propolis is a natural product with different shapes and resinous substance collected by honey bees, it attenuates many diseases damage due to its anti-oxidative action and its potentiality to minimize the deleterious effects of free radicals on tissues. The concentrations of Pb, Cd, Ni and Sb as well as the activities of antioxidants endogenous enzymes including; glutathione peroxidase (Gpx), glutathione reductase (GR), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were all determined in the tissues of liver and kidney; while aspartate transaminase (ASAT), alanine transaminase (ALAT), total protein (TP), urea and createnine, were measured in the serum of experimental rats beside histopathologicl examination in the tissues of liver and kidney. The oral administration of propolis provided a significantly therapeutic role against multi-metals-induced hepato-renal toxicity with relative improving to histopathological changes because of its scavenging and chelating properties as concluded from the present investigation.

The overall objective of our study is to evaluate the toxicity of ethanolic extracts of Hexalobus monopetalus leaves on the liver and kidney functions of rats in its therapeutic use. Thus, an ethanolic extract of the leaves was made, then a phytochemical screening of this extract. On the one hand, acute toxicity was measured in a 14-day feeding trial in Wistar rats, and on the other hand, a histopathological study of the organs removed was performed. The phytochemical screens of the ethanolic extracts obtained showed the presence of several phytochemical groups with therapeutic activity. Acute toxicity was noted at 3000 and 5000mg / kg PC doses of rats. Histopathological study revealed hepatic pycnosis at a dose of 5000 mg / kg PC in rats. Finally, no renal damage was observed

Background Nephrotoxicity is a complication due to the effect of some toxic chemicals on kidney. Current study planned to screen the effect of Trigonella foenumaqueous seeds extracts on EDTA induced nephrotoxicity. Trigonella foenum known for its various medicinal properties is also a natural antioxidant and a free radical scavenger with no documented evidence as a nephron-protective agent. Objective To investigate the protective effects of aqueous seed extracts of Trigonella foenum. Material and Methods The present study was used 40 male albino rats (Rattus albinus) with weight of (150 ± 10) g with divided into four groups: control gp; EDTA gp (95 mg/kg); Trigonella foenum gp (500 mg/kg) and EDTA + Trigonella f oenum gp by gastric tube daily for 4 weeks. Blood urea, creatinine, GFR, creatinine clearance, MDA and GPx analyses and microscopic examination of kidney were performed. Results In the present study, Blood samples were taken from all groups and concentration of serum urea, creatinine, GFR, Creatinine clearance, MDA and GPx were determined. Histopathological observations were observed in kidney tissue. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). EDTA induced an increase in urea and creatinine as well as there was a decrease in the concentration of GFR and creatinine clearance. The level of MDA was increase while the concentration of GPx was decrease in the serum of EDTA group. The aqueous extracts of Trigonella seeds significantly prevented renal damage by normalizing increased levels of renal markers. The correction of oxidative stress biomarkers was consistent with amelioration of the histopathological changes induced by EDTA. Hence, it is suggested that ameliorative effect of aqueous extract of Trigonella foenumagainst EDTA induced nephrotoxicity. Conclusion The present data suggest that aqueous extract of Trigonella foenum exhibits reno-protective effect in EDTA induced renal damage.

The effects of administration of Curcumin and Embelin on the levels of certain trace elements and other elements of clinical significance, during experimental hepatocarcinogenesis induced by Diethylnitrosamine/ Phenobarbital (DENA/PB) was studied in Wistar strain male albino rats. The levels of calcium, potassium and sodium were determined in the serum of control and experimental groups of rats. Additionally, the levels of chromium, copper, magnesium, molybdenum and zinc were also determined in the serum, liver and kidney of these rats. Furthermore, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was also assayed in the serum of these rats. Results revealed both significant and non-significant alterations in the levels of few elements during DENA/PB-induced experimental hepatocarcinogenesis. A statistically significant increase in LDH activity was found in the serum during the cancerous condition. Pre- and co-treatment with Curcumin and Embelin was found to protect the liver against the carcinogenic effects of DENA/PB. This protection was i) due to their ability to prevent changes in the levels of elements studied and ii) by the statistically significant decrease in the activity of LDH  that increased in DENA/PB-treated rats and LDH activity in the rats given only Embelin and Curcumin indicating their non-toxic effect. Background:: Liver is one of the largest organs of the human body and the main site for intense metabolism and excretion. Liver injury or dysfunction is recognized as a serious worldwide health problem. Daphne gnidium L., medicinal plant widely distributed in Algeria and used by populations in traditional medicine in the treatment of hepatitis and other diseases. Objective:: Protective and curative effects of aqueous extract of Daphne gnidium L. leaves were investigated against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced hepatic damage in rats (Wistar Albino). Method:: This study was conducted on 32 Albino rats, which were divided into four groups; the first served as control. Group II animals were treated intraperitoneally with CCl4 solution (3ml/kg). Group III animals were treated intraperitoneally with CCl4 solutions (3ml/kg) in the first day, and given aqueous Daphne extract orally at a dose level of (300 mg/kg) daily for 7 days (curative activity test). Animals of group IV were orally administered aqueous Daphne extract at a dose level of (300 mg/kg) daily, and on the seventh day treated intraperitoneally with CCl4 solution (3ml/kg) 3 hours after the latest extract administration (preventive activity test). Results:: Our results show that CCl4 significantly increases the relative liver weight, serum values of ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, and Total bilirubin, as well as the hepatic rate of oxidative stress parameters; MDA, CAT activities, and significantly decreases hepatic GSH levels compared to the control group. These results were confirmed by liver lesions observed in histological analyses. Pre-treatment and curative treatment of dose 300 mg / kg of aqueous Daphne gnidium L. extract significantly reduced relative weight, serum levels of ALT, AST, ALP, GGT and Total bilirubin liver rate, CAT activity and increases GSH level. In addition, normal liver architecture has been restored. Conclusion:: The present study demonstrates the hepatoprotective and curative effects of aqueous extract Daphne gnidium leaves against CCl4-induced liver injury in rats by improving the antioxidant status in tissues (liver) and ameliorating the harmful effects induced by CCl4.
